My folks have lived in Mendham since 1981. With getting older, it becomes important to have some quality eats closer to home. My folks used to go into NYC two to three times a week for a good meal but no longer. So they have a handful of restaurants close to home that they visit frequently, where they are known and treated well. Verona is one of those restaurants. We gathered recently for an early Sunday supper to celebrate our son's iminent departure for his freshman year of College. Mom is currently using a wheelchair due to a fall. Easy in and out and our table had plenty of room for her to be comfortable. Lots of apps to start. Fried artichokes, fried calamari, ceasar salad, mussels fra diavolo. I had the mussels and it was properly spicy. No grit was appreciated. Good bread on the table to sop up the sauce. Everyone else enjoyed their food. I tried an artichoke and it was fried well and delicious. For main courses, my son and I ordered the same thing. Pork chops with potatoes, onions, sausage, spicy peppers. No mushrooms please. I made a mental note to ask our server not to cook the pork through. I dislike well done/medium well pork. Pork should be medium. But conversation distracted me and I forgot to ask. The chops came out very dry and difficult to cut. Thank goodness for the potatoes, onions and peppers which made the pork easier to eat. It was a beautiful plate of food though and it would have been a home run if the pork was cooked medium. My parents and wife enjoyed their meals. Verona makes my Dad Saltimbocca which is not on the menu. He really loves it. My wife and Mom had a pasta dish with duck. Unusual, very well made and tasty. Verona serves up some really good food. We'll be back soon. I'll remember to specify a cooking temp the next time. read more

Nice ambiance inside the restaurant. Good service. Food choices are good but limited. Price is high. Dessert selection is also limited. Overall an average experience. Their parking is nice and a good choice in Randolph/Chester area. They do have neighbors that have a more upgraded menu at the same price so compared to them this restaurant for the price and value is a little bit behind. read more

I had the veal portobello. It was amazing!! The atmosphere is nice but it a very small restaurant so you do need a reservation. As for the service or lack for it. Our waiter had know personality and barely spoke. He walked around the restaurant 100 times looked at our table and the others only refilled our water once ( I drink a lot of water) and it took him forever to clean off the dirty plates. Never asked if we wanted dessert he just abruptly handed us all dessert menu's. He just didn't seem to care about the people he is serving. Im a strong believer that if I'm supposed to tip you 20% of and already high priced meal, then you better give me service!! I would go back because the food is that good but I would hope to get a different server!! read more

I've eaten here once and don't plan to return. We dined here for Father's Day, Sunday dinner. Menu - fairly extensive, including daily specials. Service - It was a busy weekend with Father's Day, I'm sure. Our food came very slowly. Food - Portions were big. -- Complimentary bread. Nothing to write home about. The second loaf was warm and def much better than the first. -- Apps - the mussels were not bad, we saved some broth for bread dipping. The proscuitto melon salad was like balsamic vinag had spilled, way too much. Crabcake tasted standard. -- I got shrimp scampi. Shrimp were big and good. The linguine was supposed to be cooked in garlic oil. It tasted overcooked in water (because there was an excess of water in the bowl) with barely any taste of garlic oil melding with the noodles save for the a few pieces of garlic. -- Some other people got linguine in clams and it looked about the same regarding water-ness. Parking - surprisingly not a ton of spaces. Decor - nicely decorated, you wouldn't expect it from a random NJ strip mall. read more

Today we took my mother out for a family dinner to celebrate her 80th birthday. We had 25 people in our party and not a single person had a complaint about anything that was served. I'm a huge fan of Italian food, and I was searching for nearby restaurants to add to my rotation. So I fired up yelp and checked out some of the reviews and decided to visit Verona Restaurant since it was 4.5 stars. I invited my two relatives who were just visiting me that week to come and join me. I had some fairly high expectations, especially because of the reviews. The place is really nice. It has a bright, spacious interior with big tables, and it also has some tables outside, with lots of flowers and plants all around. It was Wednesday, around 3 p.m. and all the tables outside were taken, because it was a beautiful day, so we sat inside. Staff was nice to us, they offered us some bread and poured our wine. The good thing is, they have prix fixe menu, which means you get an appetizer, entree and desert, all for $24. We all took the same thing: eggplant rollatini, chicken francaise, which was recommended by the waiter, and tiramisu for dessert. After a little while of filling ourselves up with bread butter and olive oil, our appetizers came to the table. Eggplant rollatini was with ricotta, spinach and mozzarella with marinara. You really can't go wrong with melted cheese and marinara sauce. Chicken francaise was served with a lemon white wine sauce. The portion was really big and I couldn't finish it, chicken wasn't dry like most places, but rather quite tender actually, and I liked the sauce, but it would be better if there was more of it on the chicken. Our dessert, tiramisu, was lovely, homemade, and goes great with a cup of coffee. It was a perfect finish of our lunch. I think the price of $24 per person for this food is more than fair. Verona is a beautiful little restaurant in a terrible location. If you were to scope it out as you were driving by, it'd seem like a dumpy little Who Cares? pizza joint in a plaza with an unimaginative Subway and dry cleaners. But oh, come in! Come in! The fiancée and I have been meaning to get to Verona for awhile now and last night, we finally did. We arrived around 5:30 (we're not that old but we act like a couple of retired fogies when it comes to mid-week dinners). When we walked in, we quickly noted we were the only people there, literally. No customers, no waiters, no server, no nothin'. I guess 5:30 on a Tuesday isn't exactly rush hour for dinner here. After a couple minutes, someone came out and brought us to our table. Well, they all were ours technically because it was a ghost town. Another reviewer said that the lighting is bright. If it used to be, it's not anymore. It's set low and romantic now. And they play hip old music like Frank Sinatra baby, yeah! Love it. The tables, plates, and wine glasses are all stylish and classy. The waiter opened our wine for us (it's BYOB) and brought us some incredibly warm bread with olive oil. Hooray for a place that understands the importance of the bread! We had a very nice meal. We weren't expecting to go out to eat. It was a spur of the moment type thing. We weren't expecting a night of elegance and great food, but that's where we wound up. After the bread, the fiancée enjoyed a Caesar salad with thin strips of parmesan while I sipped at a mushroom soup. The soup bowl was wide but not deep and garnished with some flaky green. It was as good looking as it was tasty. Her meal - a penne vodka dish that was not the best she'd ever had but no complaints whatsoever. My meal - chicken rollotini which is stuffed with spinach, prosciutto, fontina cheese and served in a brown sauce with mushrooms. Loved it. I wanted to eat it all but it's a big plate so I had it boxed up and guess what I'm having for dinner tonight? Our shared desserts were the tiramisu and three, wee cute cannolis. I thought both desserts were very good and the presentation was also nice with some black and red sauce adorning each plate. About halfway through our meal, a few other people started to show up. I imagine Verona gets much busier on the weekends. I hope so anyway because they really deserve more attention. read more

After many very good meals at Verona, I had a different type of experience about two weeks ago. The mussels were plump and of good quality, but the sauce was a bit bland. Surprisingly, that trend continued during the main courses. My chicken parmigiana was heavily coated and the chicken was a bit tough. The seafood pasta special sauce was watery and lacking any kind of seasoning. Pasta itself was OK (Verona's specialty) but not as good as during prior visits. It was a nice, warm Saturday night in the spring. Even at prime time, the outdoor seating was half full and tables were available inside, which is unusual on Saturday at 7:30 PM. I wonder if there is a new chef? Might the smaller than usual crowd be reflective of a kitchen downgrade, or was this just a "bad night". Will definitely give Verona another chance, but my antennae are up. read more

There is a lot to like about this place. First off the atmosphere on the patio is wonderful for al fresco dining. Nice music plays and the flowers are lovely. It's easy to overlook the traffic on Sussex Turnpike. The food is wonderful. We love the poached pear salad and all the entrees are wonderful. read more

We usually stop at the other Italian restaurant close by here , but I had seen the reviews, and figured let's give it a try , so my wife and I stopped in. The young lady at the podium said, "hello, two?".. very nicely updated dining room, clean with white tablecloths..we were seated and the waiter came over, said hello and handed us menus. Another waiter brought bread. First waiter returned and filled water glasses. Waiter returned a few minutes later and asked if we were ready. No suggestive selling or friendly banter. Took our order and left. Food came out and my chicken parm was one small piece with minimum veg.. Wife's pappardelle portion was good, and she said it was ok. My chicken parm flavor was ok also, but it was definitely on the smaller portion side. I get it, byob, no liquor license, so they need to make it on the dinners. I would prefer to pay more and get a larger portion. Dessert menu was offered, but we declined. Paid and tip 20%,as always. Disappointed and won't return. Much better overall Italian dining a stone's throw away. read more

We haven't gone in person to eat at the restaurant but did order to go. It was the best food I've had around this area yet. I had the Chicken Capri, it was awesome. My husband had chicken parm w spagetti. He raved about it, and their marinara/sauce is delicous. The prices were competitive and well worth the excellent dinner and desert. Really great Italian restaurant in a small strip mall that you might not try unless recommended. There must be a lot of recommendations, however, because my wife and I had a relatively early 6 PM reservation on a Saturday evening and the place was already quite full. There is a great variety of the usual Italian fare on the menu. My wife had the chicken Verona which was really good, with a tasty brandy sauce, and I had the fettucine Bolognese which was also excellent. The portions are large so be prepared to take some food home. I see they have a price fixe menu Sundays through Thursdays but I cannot imagine eating all of what they give you for what is now $27. We will definitely be back to this great new spot we tried based on a friend's recommendation. read more

Man, what a hidden gem this place is. I originally lived in Morristown and while their was no shortage of Italian restaurants, they were all lacking in quality. Was recommended Verona by a family friend a few years ago and have been a regular ever since. Can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but the Rigatoni Verona, Mussels, Veal Sorrentino (or Parm), and Chicken Verona are all my main go to's. This place is as consistent as it gets and has a lovely atmosphere. Oh, and their dessert is top notch/homemade too. We've introduced plenty of friends and family to Verona over the years and it's became a favorite of theirs as well. Highly recommend. read more

Have gone to this restaurant since 2011 when it first opened and the food and service has always been excellent. For years my husband & I would have dinner sometimes two or three days a week! We would take our closet friends and family to our "favorite restaurant." That ended tonight when the salmon I had was just so salty I could not eat it. When I brought this to the attention of the owner, his reaction was "it was my fault for not sending the food back" rather than admitting that maybe they did a poor job in preparing the food!! This is not how a restaurant with a good reputation should react to a loyal customer of 10 years. Will think twice before recommending or eating in this restaurant again. read more

Like so many other reviewers, I was highly impressed with Verona Restaurant. Everything was top notch- the ambiance, service, and food. We will definitely return. And holy crap, one of the best traditional house salads I've ever had. Since everyone is pretty much on board with how wonderful this restaurant is, I'll nitpick just a bit just to provide some constructive criticism. (Not that they're asking for it) Menu- specials were somewhat limited. Saw like 2 apps, and 2 entrees. Perhaps if the waiter spent the time to sell us on something, we may have went that route. Would have liked too have seen a little more variety in their non-pasta dishes overall. Perhaps a little more creativity too. Calamari- perfectly cooked with delicious red sauce. Where's the tentacles though? Maybe throw in some hot peppers or offer a buffalo or sweet chili sauce alternative. Speaking of red sauce. I ordered the veal parmigiana. The pasta was cooked perfectly and tasted home-made. But it was SMOTHERED in tomato sauce. I would have liked to taste the pasta. Deserts- same as the specials. Have the waiter bring out a tray or describe them vs just tossing a stained menu on the table. We took a pass and went someplace else for an after-dinner drink instead. Like I said though, overall a tremendous local BYOB Italian restaurant. It has the feel of a really fancy place, but wasn't insanely expensive. The food here is absolutely incredible. There isn't a single thing they got wrong or could even improve on the food quality end. We got fra diavlo mussels for appetizer and chicken parm for dinner (and their homemade chocolate ice cream). The reason I have to give 3 stars is the management/service. They had ONE actual waiter that took orders and did most everything and then two bussers to move plates and refill waters. It took 20 minutes for the one waiter to take our order and then we waited 30 minutes just to get the check. We couldn't even find a single worker on the floor by 8:45 to flag down to bring the bill because they were already busy finishing up in the kitchen. The food is extremely expensive which is why they must shape up the service. If it was a cheaper, family style restaurant then I would understand. But if you charge 20-30 bucks a plate you better be hiring adequate service too. Definitely going back there again, I just hope for a faster experience read more

My wife was not aware where I was taking her. When I pulled up, she said, this was her favorite restaurant. We had a Surprise Birthday Meal for my wifes 65th last Sat with our Family of 15. Food was a 10, service was a 10 , Atmosphere 10, Owners a 10, easy to plan a special party. Our family who is out of the area, raved about the food and celebration.
