This review is based on the carne molida con tajadas that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a classic Honduran dish and was delicious. I was honestly not expecting much because many salvadorean/Honduran places I've eaten around the DMV serve okay food but not really great. This right here hit the spot!! I noticed that they also serve Mexican and even Peruvian dishes as well but I can't speak on those items.. I've yet to find a place that can make all dishes from various countries really great so I'm curious to try. My kids ordered the chicken flautas which were good too. This is something you really can't mess up though. They are served with "crema" instead of sour cream which is essentially the same thing but some people might not be accustomed to it. Consistency is different, slightly runny and has an off-white cream color. I love it with refried beans. The place is pretty big and is also a bakery as the name implies.. In the back of restaurant there is a playroom for kids which I thought was pretty cool. The bathroom was also pretty clean. I'm definitely coming back. read more

This place is okay, nothing to write home about. I went with my mother and she had the Sopa de Mondongo it was just okay . We both didn't like the fact that they served everything in disposable Styrofoam plates and the utensils were plastic, I mean come on ! You going to be charging "sit down prices at your restaurant and serve all your food in Styrofoam "? WTF? That really turned me off . Service was subpar by the waitress too. Never got refills on drinks and no extra napkins, she would disappear 20 minutes at a time. Stopped by for coffee and pastry with my colleague before work. I need to start that pastries do taste good and they seem fresh. Coffee was cold and it was only 9 AM. My biggest grievance is with your staff. Customer service needs to improve. Your staff doesn't know the prices, has no idea the ingredients of various pastries. Their pan dulce is Central American style (as best I could tell) so their concha's (my fav) were a little different than what I'm used to but still very good, and most importantly, fresh. I haven't had it this good since I left Manassas. Living in Manassas, and fairly close to Manassas Park, I got a lot of exposure to these kinds of restaurants. The ones that serve you Latin American cuisine, and a lot of pan dulce. I love pan dulce. For those that don't know, that's "sweet bread" in Spanish, moreover baked goods, not just bread. That also includes pastries, cookies, cakes, and the like. The cuisine is your Latin American fare, and it is really good as well. I got myself a Bistec a lo Pobre (Poor Man's Steak). This is a fairly common dish in South America. It is basically a grilled steak, with eggs, plaintains, french fries (ay dios mio!) and rice. This dish also included a side salad. In essence, you get a lot of a really good price, and this is no exception. Plus it was really good. Once I came in though and I saw the glass case of baked goods, I was immediately hooked. I spent $26 on stuff when I least expected it. Maria Luisa cake? Done. Apple turnover? Got it. Two cookies with raspberry and mango filling? Purchased. I even got a vanilla muffin (the only downside of the order). The cashier, who was terrific (once again, speak the native language and you'll get better treatment), recommended the next time I come, to get some Tres Leches cake and flan. You bet your butt that's what I'm doing! They even make their own drinks in-house, and they were awesome too. I brought back some desserts for my co-workers and they were hooked on the smell of my lunch and the sweets. When you have amazing customer service, and great food, for a great price (the baked goods were a bargain), you are going to want to come back. I can't wait. read more

I rarely complain about a business. but I feel like I had to give this place a review. Before you consider visiting this location let me warn you. They're over charging people! PLEASE confirm that the prices on the menu are correct with your server before ordering. I order "Bistek a lo pobre" The menu we got at the table showed it cost $16.50 or so. I got charged $24.99 for it. When I asked our server about it she said "oh we just changed to the new menu and prices have increased." As a server she could of said that in the beginning but unfortunately she didn't. She did provide great service! She was very sweet and that's why I'm giving a 3 star rating. Please don't get me wrong I don't mind paying $25 or $50 for a plate of food but giving your client a surprise charge of more than $2 for a plate is crazy to me! Called in advance at 7:20pm for an order of pupusas. Usually it takes 20 minutes for an order to be ready so I didn't arrive until then to pick up the food. I paid for the food and kept being told food is coming. I did not receive the food until 8:10pm. 50 minutes since I called. It seems they started to make the order when I arrived to pay. What is the point of calling in advance? For courtesy of inconvenience, I asked if I can have more tomato sauce and instead they asked the cook if the sauce was enough for my total order and said they couldn't give me more. Went to Veronica's bakery today in Springfield. Very neat and clean inside and we were seated immediately. The server was pleasant and took our orders. The food came out after a short time but it was evident it was freshly made. My friend and I both ordered meat and cheese papusas, my friend ordered a tamale and I ordered yucca in addition to the pupusas. The pupusas were some of the best I have had in the area. Good size, plenty of filler and cooked just right. Just the right amount of cabbage and thin tomato sauce to go with them. Very good. About halfway through eating my pupusa the yucca came out. Golden brown, hot, fried to perfection. I finished by pupusas and dug into the yucca, delicious! Good food and service what more can you ask for? read more

I tried to place an order of bread in this store. I called ahead of time to order and pay and they said they couldn't take me order ahead of time. Then, I explained that I had my sick 4 month old baby in the car. If they could help me because I didn't wanted to take her out because it was ice raining. They said, they couldnt help me either. I was calm and still parked and stepped out to place the order. When, I got to the counter , the lady on the phone who just hang up with me was right at the ordering table. And that is how I came to be lunching at Veronica's today. Located on the backside of Springfield Plaza (near the rear door to Hard Times), I would probably never have happened upon this place if I hadn't been running an errand next door. My first blush having handed over $9.90 for the Flauta platter and a bottle of water was 'Um a tad pricey'. (There isn't a price to be seen anywhere in the place for anything so you'll have to ask if you want to know any.) But when my piled plate came and I began to tuck in, after one bite of chicken flauta it was 'Holy cow! That's tasty. Going to have to come here and try some other stuff.' Not often one bite of food at a new place will do that to me. My platter consisted of 3 crispy chicken flautas, rice, a little refried beans, pico de gallo, and a salad. After having to stare at the pastry case the entire time I ate, I couldn't resist and went back up to the counter to get a deliciously flaky palmier to have on the way home. I went to my buddy's house in Springfield and without looking on yelp, we went out searching for food. No, we didn't get food at Veronica's Bakery, but the horrible Flame Kabob place next door...yuck. More on that in another review. Anyway, after eating some "Afghan food." I quote that because it was very mediocre (straight-from-the-can) Afghan food, we saw this little bakery next door. It was pretty much filled with only Hispanics...possibly Salvadoreans or Mexicans (that's just a guess," which was good because it's a bakery with different types of Hispanic food. Anyway, the lady behind the counter was super nice explaining what all the different desserts were since we weren't familiar with them. In the end, we got this nice little three milk cake (I forget the Spanish words for it), but it was delicious and reasonably priced. I can!e in here today because I was so curious about what it was all about. I had driven by here dozens of times, and I wasn't quite sure if it was a diner or a bakery type of place. It turned out to be a restaurant that caters mostly to the Hispanic community. To is was great for me, because my wife is from Mexico, and I am well-accustomed to the Latin flavor! Since I was just ordering for myself tonight, I decided to go for the carne asada with tajadas. Translated it is beef steak with green banana slices. There were a few people seated and already enjoying their meals, and I was able to find a comfortable spot by the window. It took them about five minutes to prepare the food, and it was well worth the wait. The beef steak was moist and savory, and it was cooked perfectly. The banana slices were something new to me, but the tasted very sweet. I liked the food very much. read more

I picked up a whole premade tres leches cake and was really nervous about all the bad reviews and how fresh this cake would be since I was taking it to an event celebrating the Latine/Hispanic culture. I instantly regretted going here when I walked in but it was convenient and luckily they had a few premade cakes available. First, this place looks dingy... and the staff just stares at you like they're annoyed when you walk in but doesn't say a thing even when you say hi first. The glass shelves are all dirty making the baked goods look unappealing. I asked for the smaller tres leches cake and it was put in a dirty white bakery box. By dirty, I mean the top of the box had some brown spots on it. The person at the counter checked me out but immediately the lady boxing my cake spoke to them and the price was changed to a higher cost. There are no prices on the cakes so I have no clue if they charged me more than the usual or if the cashier did originally ring up the wrong price. It wasn't cheap, and I could've paid the same price at a high end bakery. Anyways, the cake was thankfully beautifully made on the outside and the inside and it was delicious. Everyone said it was really good and moist. I was really afraid it would be dry and old. I am giving 3 stars for the cake itself... not any more than that because I will never go back here again even if it turned out to be a really good cake. I came here because I was craving a tres leches cake only to be disappointed by the service and the food. When I walked in, it took a while for someone to greet me. And the lady that did greet me, seemed liked she did not want to work that day. So not only did I order a tres leches cake, I also ordered an horchata at the last minute. For $3 bucks, patrons get a generous square/slice of cake (enough for two) topped with a maraschino cherry. This place is safe for me. When I make tres leches, I eat the whole cake. Having always been curious about tres leches cake, I was excited to try it at Veronica's after reading my fellow Yelpers' reviews about it. We decided to also grab some dinner while we were at it. It's a small place but we had no problems finding a seat after we placed our order. My grilled chicken plate (which comes with a little salad, beans, rice, and some picked veggies) was delicious. The chicken was nicely grilled (a touch tough though) and I even enjoyed the beans although they were slightly too salty as it cooled. The hubster ordered the mixed fajita plate, which came with a few fresh tortillas. The fajita mix was in a tomato-y sauce, which was different than other places we've had fajitas, but they were also pretty good. The star of the dinner was the cake though - a light dusting of cinnamon on top, a small pool of the various milks as it sat out while I finished my dinner, and one happy lady. Will I be back for the food? Yes. Will I be back for the cake? Hell yes. read more

Great friends Tracey and Guille told us about how good this Salvadoran place is, and trusting Guille's heritage and taste, my wife and I ventured to this local eatery to find out for ourselves. We stopped in recently to find that they have a nice selection of Salvadoran dulces (sweets) and baked goods as well as an elaborate selection of Salvadoran eats! With a clean and well kept store front, attentive staff and fairly prompt food prep time, we were considerably impressed with the offerings we tried. My wife had the Lomo Saltado, consisting of typically seasoned and marinated beef chunks with fries, and white rice, which was very, very tasty, fresh and well presented... and I had the Lomo a lo Pobre (poor man's beef meal), which consisted of a very tender thinly sliced flame-grilled flank steak, fries, white rice, chopped lettuce and 2 fried eggs, and flanked by two tender fried sweet plantains! Amazingly they offer pretty substantial portions on their dishes - making the their use of disposable dishes awkward and the plastic flatware flimsy while trying to cut into both pupusas and steak! That being the only major drawback we found, I guess this is one way they keep their prices low, both meals were under $10 each, Wow and Terrific! Although their pupusas are good, they're not the best in the area, but after the meals we enjoyed, all said and done, it is well worth the visit. We'll definitely be occasional patrons. read more

Hmm, I don't really want to give this place two stars, but three seems a tad too nice. I've been here more than once, and my visits were inconsistent on the good things, and consistent on the bad things. It really is too bad. You can definitely tell that this place is not your typical westernized restaurant; the wait is quite long to get your food, even if there is no line. While that is not a plus in my book, it makes me think that some items may be made fresh. But it could also mean that the cooks are just plain slow and have no concept of waiting customers. There is also a definite preference for those who may be regulars or who can speak Spanish fluently. It's not like non-Spanish speakers are treated badly, but they aren't treated with the same level of friendliness that others are. It's also hard to judge when some food items are ready for your taking. For example, one time I went for a takeout order, and I wasn't notified that my food had been sitting on the counter for 10 minutes. Communication and the process need to improve. Secondly, you could order tamales which are on the counter next to the register, but you won't be handed them unless you remind the girl that you actually ordered them. By the way, these chicken tamales, while they have a good flavor, are lukewarm. Pretty disappointing. The pechuga (chicken) was decent - it was a huge portion of meat and rice, with corn tortillas, and a small portion each of beans, salad, and pickled onions. I typically don't eat a lot, so this entree was way too large for me (too much rice mainly). Now on to the very popular tres leches cake - one time, it was pretty much the best I've ever had! Another time, it was dry and unsatisfying. Inconsistency = not desirable. On the other hand, ask for the horchata (rice drink) and the plantain empanada; they are delicious! Random - the place is very large on the inside. Numerous tables with dark finishings make it modern and clean. Parking can be tight, but there are several spots in the lot. Lastly, lack of a clear menu in person and online is annoying, but prices are great. Bottom line: if you have time to spend and are looking for a meat-heavy dish (that isn't Asian or Middle Eastern), Veronica's may be able to help. read more

Veronica's is next to the backdoor of Hard Times Springfield. The cafe had large plate windows overlooking the parking lot and street. The crowd was mostly moderate and of Latin decent. The tables were clean and the service was quick. The food.......... was really fresh. I ordered the steak flantas platter, 3 pupusas beef, and one tres letcha. The flantas were perfect, the steak grilled to perfection. The accompanying salad was unbelievable with a creamy dressing. The red cabbage salad had a nice hint of spice.
