I ate inside at a booth with friends on Easter Sunday. I ordered my usual Lengua Tacos with Mexican rice & sides of salsa & sour cream. The rice was good and the lengua meat was good & succulent or semi dry / not so juicy. I probably wouldn't order lengua here again but I would definitely try other food offered. I love the great deals for lunch menu specials. I ordered two takeouts of : 1. Two tamales with beans, queso, & rice ($11.99) 2. Lunch Chimichanga ( Fried burrito with choice of beef or chicken, topped with queso, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and tomatoes. Served with a side of rice and beans - $12.00 These takeouts were full portions of food in large takeout containers - very happy . My husband scarfed down his takeout food in silence- a sign that the food was amazing. I ate the tamales with beans and rice later for a good dinner. Highly satisfied. There are always lines for bathroom . Only two stalls are available . Definitely need a larger bathroom. The decor in the restaurant were very colorful and made me smile. We were invited to join friends here for Cinco De Mayo. As you might expect, El Paso was jammed packed with people sipping brightly-colored drinks sitting in chairs along the sidewalk. Curiously, El Paso was playing music on the sidewalk, but the music was of some pop strain and definitely not Mexican. For such a hectic evening, service inside was surprisingly good. This was our third visit here. We swore we wouldn't come back after the last time here when our expensive and tiny tequila shots came in shot glasses where the bottom of the glass was halfway to the top of the glass. But hey, who were we to turn down a free Cinco De Mayo dinner? So back here we were. Somebody at our table mentioned that the El Pasos in the DMV were not all owned by a single person, that the brothers in the family had a falling out so these El Pasos have different owners now. That would explain why the El Paso next to Five Guys up on Richmond Highway has such different menus and service. Our favorite El Paso remains the location in Springfield. I went with the birria tacos. They were fat and tasty and came with a great dipping sauce. They also came with rice and beans on a separate plate. A kind of white queso fundido was ordered for the table to go with the brightly colored tortilla chips. This cheese sauce was more like gravy than a true queso fundido. I ordered 5 tacos: 2 steak street tacos, 2 surf n turf tacos, and I can't remember the 5th one but they were decent and filling. They gave us 3 complimentary chips and salsa for our party of 9, which was a nice touch. Overall, I enjoyed my meal here. Delicious food, friendly service, and lively environment...the Cooper Road location is one of my favorite spots in Alexandria. All of my many meals here have been very good...and the cheerful atmosphere and colorful decor always add to a positive dining experience. The dishes (and appetizer tortilla chips!) are generously portioned and beautifully presented. Only one time (my last visit) I wasn't impressed with my order....I wasn't too thrilled with the mixto as the shrimp and beef seemed a bit ovetcooked. My friend's tacos looked really delicious, however, and she said they were very good. I've also had excellent fajitas and enchiladas in the past. Overall we like the Cooper Road, Alexandria, location of El Paso, but we have some seriously bad experiences that lower our overall score. 1. They charge an obscene amout to change any part of the dish that you order. I made two changes, 1) excluding rice (an item that upsets my stomach), and 2) asking that my order be half chicken and half beef. I was charged $5.50 for each change. $11.00 total! My advice is read the description carefully and don't ask for any changes, or suffer sky-high costs to modify your meal. 2. Avoid any item with "steak" in it. The so-called steak is cheap meat laced with grizzle. Stick with chicken or shrimp. 3. Leave your coats in the car. They should invest in a serious kitchen exhaust fan. When you leave plan to wash your clothes, or else they will smell like fajatas for days. On the positive side, they have an extensive menu, and the service is usually very good and prompt. read more

The ambience of Thai restaurant is I perfect and sets the tone well for a Mexican restaurant. The menu is plentiful and will literally have you looking at it for a decent amount of time because everything looks so good. Also not only is the menu expansive but this is one of the few restaurants where almost everything has a picture to show what it is. I ordered soup and I know you are probably like soup at a Mexican restaurant out of everything but when I say it was amazing and taste homemade like my grandmother made it. Our waiters name was David and he says he just started but I couldn't tell. He was so energetic and knowledgeable of the menu and stayed on top of us making sure our order was correct and ensuring anything we needed was handled promptly. Additionally we enjoyed a carne asada with shrimp and the steak was cooked perfectly and not to mention well seasoned. We definitely will be returning soon! Tried the Jose Barria burrito ( shredded beef, bean rice) , husband got the taco special 3 tacos (2 chicken 1beef) with rice n beans. We had a very enjoyable lunch here. We started with the complimentary chips and salsa which was good, but not amazing. The salsa should be a bit more chunky as they have it really thin. You get two baskets of chips and salsa and then you pay for refills, so if you're just coming here for drinks and chips, be forewarned. The flauta appetizer was really good. We got the chicken and steak and while the steak was good, I would order just chicken flautas next time for the sake of having such good flavor. The super quesadilla was nice and full with cheese and steak. The rice was good for a generic Spanish rice and the beans were thinned well, but not the best I ever had. Never assume. El Paso is a local chain of 4 restaurants. After having a great dinner at their Springfield restaurant, I made a lunch date with my wife at this location because we assumed the food was just as good. The Springfield restaurant is better if you want moist meat. The best recipes in the world couldn't help 3 of these dishes. A recipe is only as good as the cook. We tried the following 6 dishes. 1) Diana's Queso Loco A blend of four Mexican cheeses and steak. Topped with pico de gallo and jalapeños. Served with chips. A flavorful combination of savory ground beef and cheeses with the slightly spicy pico de gallo made this one the the best queso we've tried. If you want hot, eat the jalapeños. 2) Sopa de Pollo The soup had chicken and rice. It was garnished with diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, avocado, cheese, and colorful tortilla strips. The white chicken meat was incredibly dry and flavorless. It made me wonder how long it had been sitting in the broth. The broth was in need of more chicken flavor and seasoning. The rest of the ingredients were good. They helped make the soup taste better. 3) Burrito El Toro Shredded chicken or beef, rice, cheese, black beans, and refried beans topped with verde sauce and sour cream. We picked beef. It was dry and weak in flavor. It wasn't noticeable when everything was mixed together. Overall, the dish was slightly spicy and tangy with a nice balance of sweet and salty. It was quite tasty except for the dry beef. It ruined the savoriness. 4) Burrito El Pepe Carnitas, black beans, rice, and cheese topped with queso and pico de gallo. The pork was drier than the beef in the Burrito El Toro. Since there was a lot of pork, the dish was dry overall. The queso and the rest of the ingredients made it flavorful, so this burrito can be very savory if the pork was cooked right. 5) Their Flan was a homemade Mexican custard with caramel syrup topping. It was smooth and sweet with a vanilla flavor custard and a simple caramel syrup. A richer flavor in the syrup would help. They should add milk and butter to their syrup. The flavor of sweetened condensed milk was missing in the custard. Overall, this was good, not great. 6) The Churros had 4 pieces of deep-fried pastry sticks filled with caramel syrup and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. They were topped with caramel and chocolate syrup. The predominant flavors were cinnamon and simple caramel with a background of chocolate syrup and fried churro. The chocolate syrup had a flavor similar to Hershey's. The caramel syrup was the same as the one used on their flan. It was inside and outside the churro. It made the inside a little mushy. It'd be better if they were filled with a rich caramel. Despite that, the dessert was flavorful and moderately sweet. We enjoyed it. Our server, Alexis, was helpful, attentive, responsive, and polite. His timing was excellent. I couldn't ask for more. The dining room and restrooms were clean. They have 3 dining rooms decorated in colorful Mexican motif. A dated style but still charming. Their modest size cantina had 3 tables and 12 chairs. We were disappointed by the dry meats, but the food is more flavorful than many other Mexican restaurants around the DC area. I am giving a 4-star rating because the service was great, the atmosphere was inviting, and the flavor of the food was well above average except for a few fixable flaws.
