Super friendly atmosphere. A nice stop over for a late breakfast. I asked for the egg, potato, cheese and carne asada burrito on corn tortillas (like tacos) and a side of their whole beans. It was all tasty and the beans where homemade, fresh, and pretty good! They were grilling the meat fresh outside. It was also not greasy. Prices were also reasonable and service prompt. Veronica's serves amazing Mexican food in a cozy setting with friendly happy service. This is the only Mexican restaurant I've been to that makes the chips to order, when they get to your table they are hot and super crispy! My favorite by far is the carnitas plate followed closely by the chile relleno plate. They have daily specials M-F. Love this place! read more

We went to hike Three Sisters Falls and were hungry after. Walked into Veronica's not sure what to expect and was completely surprised by our experience! Our server was friendly and brought over fresh corn chips and they were the bomb. I ordered Chile Verde and Albondigas soup as they are hard to find on menus, my hubby ordered a taco and enchilada. My wife & I have eaten here twice since moving to the Lake Cuyamaca area. This is really well made Mexican eats, just like Mamacita used to cook. The Chiles Rellenos are superb as is the Rice & Frijoles Rancheros (de la olla). I'm not much of a flour tortilla person but when an eatery offers handmade I'm all for it. They're prices are very untypically low for the Descanso, Cuyamaca, Julian areas. There are some misses on the menu and good days & bad days on the food. Overall, food is 3.5 to 4. But, heck, even though it is only 45min from San Diego, there is nothing else out here. My cheese enchiladas were cold and the cheese on the inside wasn't even thinking about melting, old el paso makes more authentic enchilada sauce, and my salad had a layer of water underneath it. I came here after hiking 3 sisters falls as it was adjacent to the closest market. I ordered the Ribs and Chicken special which was decent. Their portion size was very generous as it also included corn, fries and baked beans. They also served homemade tortilla chips, fried to order, and salsa. read more

Stopped here on a motorcycle ride recently. The place is very quaint, what you would expect for Descanso. The menu wasn't huge, but what they made was very tasty. I've seen some of the reviews knock the carne asada here, but they cook it outside on a real grill. Not many places I know do that. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, explaining some of the dishes I was unfamiliar with. They brought out complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were almost too hot to touch at first, but you can't complain about something being made fresh for you! The salsa was wonderful and clearly made there on site. Our burritos came out quickly and tasted delicious. They also have fountain drinks, with one free refill, so if you are out in the heat, know that you can get more than a little can of soda without having to pay for multiple drinks. I live in the area and while the staff is friendly and helpful the food is ok. I think the place needs a bit of a makeover or deep clean. Also a fresh salsa bar would be nice. It's good for kids because they are so helpful and don't make you feel bad for leaving a mess, and even have given chocolates to the kids and free juice.that does mean alot to me and its a local place so it's important to spend money here. But like other small towns they know there isn't a lot of competition. However it is FARbetter than the junction. But people that came in after us got a table before us and we quickly realized they all know each other. So we were put on the back burner. The food is really good. Wait times aren't the best but it's worth it for the grub. The only reason why I gave it 3 stars was the business not being open at the times it states in the window and online. I live in Julian and work in Alpine so one morning I was looking forward to grab a bite on my way to work in the morning. Beyond Dissapointed!!! Veronica's Kitchen, wow. Ok. A month ago I ordered take out, second time we have eaten there. My inlaws were up and my FIL went and picked it up. They do not eat avocado. Neither do my children. I ordered everything without it. Everything was drenched in it. Gross. They also sent a small rice instead of large, though I was charged for a large. Because everyone was starving and I ddnt want to be over upset when I spoke to them (small town) I cooked eggs and toast and waited to the next day to call. I spoke to Veronica. She apologized and said we could have the same exact messed up order for free in the future. Just call and speak with her. I called just now and she told me "You always complain about my food." (We had only eaten there once before and never complained though it was overpriced for small portions). She also said "you are welcome to eat here but stop complaining. Thank you goodbye." AND SHE HUNG UP ON ME!!!!!!!!! At NO point was I ever rude. I'm sorry, but that is NOT ok. I don't think she knew who she was talking to, but if that's how she treats her locals then screw that. Yes this is a hole in the wall. However it's pretty good considering it's in the middle of nowhere. After my hike, I was starving and needed food ASAP. This was the only option, but we're glad we stopped here. I ordered a pollo asado burrito it was okay it wasn't excellent but it was decent. For the price I expected more. The best The best part was the salsa, guacamole, both very fresh. The chile relleno was amazing my mom ordered this and it was as good or better then her food. My moms food is amazing. Her plate was huge. The kids chicken fingers were okay not bad but again my son was starving too so they tasted amazing the only thing they could've done better was probably the french fries they were little just generic and defectively meh. In Descanso for the Parade (I was in it...wife watched) at 7 am, and Veronica's opened right on time. Pozole sounded good so I ordered it. Veronica said it was made yesterday and there was no more Pata, but I ordered anyway. Pleasantly surprised when it came to my table LOADED with shredded Carnitas Pork ! The food was okay but the thing that really got me was the price. I ask for a torta without any meat since I am vegeartian. Now get this the price of a Carne Asada total at the time was 8.99$ the charged me 10.99. So they charged 2 dollars not to put meat on my torta and it is not like they put anything extra on it all it was, was at torta without meat. I mean come on I don't mind paying the same 8.99$ but charging more to just take off meat. I talked to the person and asked them why it's more money and she said that's the price and should wouldn't even listen to me or adjust the price. I think one star is being generous. Jack of all trades, master of none. This place would be better off focusing on one thing instead of doing it all. This place is a far cry from a taco shop or a Mexican restaurant. Taco Bell prepares better Mexican food. I had a bean, cheese, and rice burrito... Cost was nearly $8 and the burrito was about 1/2 the size of a taco shop burrito. The beans were dry and tasted like the ones you get from a can at the grocery store. I ordered quesadillas for my kids that were tiny, way too tiny for the $4 that they charge. My advice? Save your money and go down the hill for decent food. My husband and I thought we'd give our local restaurant another try but unfortunately we left feeling disappointed once more. I had the Pollo Asado burrito which was very tasteless and dry. The chunks of chicken although plentiful tasted as if they had been fast thawed and heated in a microwave with out seasoning. Ugh! Even loading it up with salsa didn't help. My Husband had a bean, cheese and (added) rice burrito which should have been so simple as to be hard to screw up. However, it tasted as if it came right off the Sysco truck. Very bland and canned-like. To make matters worse they have add rice on the menu for $1.00 but charged $1.50 on our bill. When asked why there was a discrepancy the waitress simply said it was an error on the menu and wasn't ready to correct it. It's not the .50 cents extra that bugs me but the attitude about it....ethically you shouldn't advertise a price and then sneak in extra charges because it's convenient for the seller. The whole menu in my opinion is overpriced for very mediocre tasting food. We will not be "trying it" again, ever. read more
