I'm not vegan, but I love plant based food and love an all vegan establishment even more. I had friends from out of state who are vegan come to visit so I knew I had to try it with them. I love the aesthetic and the mid century diner vibes. Food was delicious but the service was weird. First, I ordered a Mac and cheese cup for my toddler. Then I ordered myself the tblta with a salad as my side. I asked the server the dressing options and he said "ketchup, ranch". I just got ranch. My friend ordered same thing but with a different side." All of us (3 adults, 2 kids) had our food come out at different times. My toddler received a bowl of Mac and cheese instead of a cup, and I just received my salad. I never received my received even when my friend received hers. I mentioned this to server and he said he "didn't catch" me ordering that. Thankfully it came out rather quickly but it was awkward since everyone at the table had their meal. We also had a 20% off deal through Yelp and the server almost seemed to question it. I would definitely return because the food was great, and I'm giving the server the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was new, or maybe even having an off day. read more

Excellent vegan diner! I've visited a couple times and got the Bombtastic Biscuits and Gravy twice. Potatoes and the gravy are soo soo flavorful and delicious. Prices are a bit steep for breakfast but the portions are pretty big, and it's also just the time we're living in I guess. Do yourself a favor and pass on the tiramisu. Soggy and not worth the money! Otherwise, the ambiance is really great: very old-timey and charming. I'd visit again if I lived in the area. read more

We were really excited to visit this place after stumbling upon their website while we were staying in the neighborhood... alas, the best thing about this place is how nice the menu looks online. The options seemed appetizing and they were offering various options but I should have walked out of the place before ordering when I noticed this old restaurant was empty during dinner time. The food was mediocre and our two orders that were supposed to come with fries had ridiculously small amount of fries (my wife's order literally had 4 tiny fries) as if the cook forgot to put in two orders in the fryer and divided the order poorly in our two plates). I probably would have been a little more forgiving if the food wasn't priced so high and if the place was somewhat more inviting but there didn't seem to be any redeeming quality to the place including the attitude of the person working at the cashier who seemed to hate the place even more than I did.... Portland has so many good options that there's no need to waste money on this place. read more

So glad I found this place on my recent road trip! I haven't had the diner experience since going vegan and didn't even know I missed it until I came here! Serendipitous that I found it on a road trip as road trips and diners just go together. I had the chikun fried stake with mashed potatoes and broccoli. It was all amazing and had lots of flavor, not that over fried taste. The broccoli was prepared to perfection and the mashed potatoes weren't just mashed potatoes! They were like stuffed and grilled and so tasty!! My mom had the Reuben and said she enjoyed it thoroughly. We were nervous about feeling sleepy and stuffed on the drive home after a big heavy meal but were pleasantly surprised that we never felt weighted down or sleepy! Just satisfied! The diner ambiance was cute and inviting. And again the perfect experience for a road trip. The service was exceptional as well! Our server was very nice, inviting and informative. Amazing experience for our first stop in Portland for the day! We had an amazing time from the minute we walked in being welcomed by Anabelle, to finishing the delicious comfort food that reminded us of when we could eat whatever we wanted at diners! Getting to have yummy food, with broccoli (which I was particularly ecstatic about! lol) and enjoying that diner vibe was nostalgic and a great time. This place has been on my list of restaurants to try since it opened and I was excited to finally check it out. I'll start with the good stuff. The vibe and decor of the diner is super cool, like you've been transported in time. The servers were great, super friendly and pleasant. My boyfriend had the La Mesa and seemed to enjoy it. I thought the tofu scramble and potatoes that came with my meal were pretty tasty. The not so great: the maple syrup and hot sauce were both watery and the syrup didn't taste like maple at all. The pancakes had a weird texture, kind of tough and almost doughy? The veggie sausage fell apart, had a super strange mouth feel, and didn't taste like much. I probably could have looked past all of the that until I found not one but two separate hairs in my food. Didn't feel like eating anything else after that discovery. Kind of bummed because I was really hoping to love this place and it has a ton of potential, but they miss the mark in a few different areas. read more

Vertical Diner had so much promise, yet fell far short of delivering a satisfying dining experience. Perhaps I shouldn't have put much faith in a place with the initials VD... I should've heeded my fellow Yelper Natalie N's less than glowing review that mentions items being hit or miss here and that VD was maybe working out the opening period kinks. That was over two years ago! Plenty of time for them to iron things out and perfect their menu. We pulled up right when they opened at noon. That should've been my first clue. What place that specializes in serving breakfast all day doesn't open until noon? We had strange vibes upon entering but really wanted to embrace this anachronistic trip to a bygone era. This place dubbed "Gold Room" really is pure gold. It's like walking into any cookie cutter diner from the 70's flipped on it's head 180 and turned Vegan. Original popcorn ceiling? Check. Pleather seats? Check. All original gold colored fixtures? Check, check check! I was nervous of the cleanliness of this place but was hoping for the best. I'm sure there's grease from the 70's in the kitchen to match the dust bunnies in the dining area. With that, I still held out hope that they could deliver a satisfying meal. We settled on the Breakfast Burrito, Bombastic Biscuit, and a Bloody Mary that wasn't on the menu. i order a breakfast burrito most everywhere I go and make a pretty mean one at home. This one was huge alright, but it was mostly just bland. It felt like I was endlessly sawing through the oversized, stiff wheat tortilla. The scramble was mushy with minimal flavor. The sausage was good but not much of it. It came with breakfast potatoes on the side that while seasoned with the kitchen sink, weren't fully cooked through. Some pieces were hard and cold. The quickly oxidizing "guacamole" should've been hidden on the inside instead of plopped on the side like ice cream. So many great breakfast burritos in town, this one was a bit of a letdown. The Bloody Mary was middle of the road for me. Not bad, could've used more spice and booze. Again, like burritos for breakfast, I'm very judgmental of my Bloodies as it's one of my favorite and easiest things to make at home. At $7 it's not terrible for what you get though. That Breakfast Burrito was still better than the Bombastic Biscuit. The mushy scramble was here on the side again and cold to the touch. The same undercooked potatoes were on the side, but my lovely wife wasn't able to eat them due to being overly spicy for her. The biscuit itself was hard and tough to cut through despite being smothered in a delicious gravy. The seemingly homemade sausage patty on top was pretty good though. With an edible biscuit, this part might've been decent but you can't forgive most of the plate being difficult to eat. I mean, I usually eat my wife's leftovers but couldn't really bring myself to get the rest of it boxed up to go knowing full well that I wouldn't eat it. Not with so many other places in town to eat. I forgot to check-in on Yelp until after we paid but even the 20% off wouldn't have made this meal any more palatable. A guy walked in not knowing this place was Vegan. He ended up leaving without ordering anything. I was thinking "what a pussy for not even giving it a try. Imagine being afraid of plants." Then after trying everything, I'm kind of glad he didn't stick around. He would've thought this is what Vegan food tastes like and never try it anywhere else again. I've heard this diner came over from Salt Lake City. Unfortunately, PDX ain't SLC. You might be able to get away with serving mediocre or even subpar Vegan food to folks not accustomed to the finer things in life but not here. Fortunately, it's PDX and if this place can't deliver, another Vegan restaurant will step in to fill the void. Perhaps not here at this unique spot, but maybe elsewhere in this wonderful city. read more

I ordered the josquin Phoenix burger on a gluten-free bun with a Cali style patty and a side of mashed potatoes. The sandwich was crave worthy. I will be back for that in the future. I LOVE Vertical Diner! It's so great to have a vegan place in SW! My entire family loves eating here--and that's tough considering my high schooler is not a big fan of eating out... we always enjoy our food--I love the Mile High Cobb and the biscuits in particular... and I've enjoyed the boozy root beer float on my last two birthdays! Today we had such a great server--she was on top of it and friendly and super fast, too. One of the reasons my son likes it so much is that it feels like you're stepping back in time--or into a scene from a movie! It's got that classic 50's diner vibe that is just great. Aside from that, we had a problem a while back when someone tried to send a gift card to us but lost it somehow... when I wrote an email, the owner (in Salt Lake City!) personally called me and got it straightened out--how is that for epic customer service?? Been here a couple times and never had remarkable experiences. Our last experience (albeit a few months ago) we got the jackfruit tacos and while I am not a regular consumer of jackfruit, it tasted like straight vinegar, super salty and possibly spoiled, we actually couldn't finish them (this is very uncommon when it comes to us and tacos!), and the service was rough as well. We were the only patrons in the restaurant but struggled to get water refills. Transparently, I'm not vegan, so perhaps my standards are skewed, but wouldn't recommend the jackfruit tacos. read more

I had an iced Spiced Chai (the alcoholic drink) and my friend had the spiked Root Beer Float. Both drinks were phenomenal. I ordered the stroganoff but it was very similar to just penne pasta with white sauce and mushrooms. Was hoping for a more decadent sauce like non-vegan stroganoff is. I am not a vegan, but my daughter is. Vertical is the best vegan restaurant I have been to in Portland and that is saying a lot. My daughters brought me there for Fathers Day brunch, and other than the "bacun", which is basically tofu strips fried with seasoning, I would not have known I was eating vegan. Most excellent, highly recommended, especially for a mixed group. The carnivores in your group won't even notice. On Fathers Day, the servers were overwhelmed as to be expected, but they were consistently on top of things, and everyone was happy. Unlike some vegan restaurants I've been to, it did not have a dive-bar feeling, nor a bougie feeling. It felt like any other family restaurant. Although I've had better experiences here in the past, my most recent experience was extremely disappointing. I ordered extra sauce, and they charged me $1 for it. When I got the meal home, the extra sauce was missing. I called them, and they said I could drive back and get more sauce, but I told them that my schedule was completely booked for at least several days, and I asked them to refund the dollar. They said they would have to reach out to their manager and get back to me. Well surprise, surprise, they never got back to me, and the dollar was not refunded. I can't believe they're forcing me to do a chargeback over $1, and I can't imagine their credit card processor will be happy about this, but it's a matter of principle. If they could just add an extra dollar to every check and no one said anything because "it's just a dollar," they would quickly be skimming hundreds and thousands of dollars of fraudulent profit. If they don't have the ability to issue refunds, they should have checked the order better before giving it to me. read more

My boyfriend's aunt recommended this cute vegan diner to us and we loved it! The place is large and cozy, comfy booths and traditional diner style but with a vegan twist. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, she gave us great recommendations for what to get! The food came out fast and was so delicious! I loved the pancake stack, it came with gravy and vegetables and I added tempeh bacon inside for more heartiness. The burger was delicious, spicy and savory with a delicious secret sauce and jalapeño kick! The mac and cheese was average, I've had better ones and worse ones but it was super fun to try and nut free! Decent size menu with an array of things to choose from, including breakfast all-day. Very much in the American diner style of foods, befitting of its name and retro diner location. The food was excellent. Tasty and more than enough. The side salad was larger than expected. They make their own salad dressings and ketchup; that certainly deserves some credit. Flipping fantastic vegan noms. I was excited to see Vertical came to town a few years ago after trying them out in Salt Lake City. I'm glad they're in Portland now to feed the vegan masses. The taco salad with mesquite jackfruit was tasty and we really liked the tiger tenders. The Mesa is a delicious veganized skillet and I'm a big fan of their mushroom gravy on the bombastic biscuit with tempeh bacun.
