Excited and drawn in by the reviews mentioning the breakfast buffet, This Veteran Stopped in for breakfast today. As we walked in, we observed one table with 8 fellas exchanging war stories. The rest of the restaurant was empty. As for the buffet, the only thing present was a tray of biscuits and a tray of sausage gravy. No sign of any servers. Sunday lunch buffet here is what I LIVE for. You can't go wrong with their southern buffet: greens, baked Mac and Cheese, cornbread, ribs, fried chicken, candied yams.... and for dessert - peach cobbler and banana pudding! Their regular lunch specials are good too. Lots of amazing burger options, soup, sandwiches. They do catering for large parties and events as well. What I love about this place is that a portion of the proceeds from the restaurant go to a transition home for homeless veterans. What an awesome cause. This is a great hidden gem. The food is delicious and the service is top notch. I went here for a private event for a scholarship banquet that they hosted. The food was really good and their demeanor was so wonderful. I had turkey sausage, eggs, biscuits and grits. Each one was seasoned wonderfully. I also love their story of supporting veterans. They have veterans work there and they really give them a chance to reintegrate after service. I will definitely be back. read more

Will come back for the home cooking. Went on a Wednesday and it is all you can eat buffet day. We did get that however I was a little shocked when the bill came it was 15 a person... I know it's all day however we were there for lunch and the waitress didn't tell us the price when she asked if we wanted a menu or buffet. Guess it was a little my fault for not asking but didn't think it was going to be that high and also it didn't include a drink. I will be back... But will look at the prices first. read more

I really hate to do this because I really support their cause and I wanted so much to like this place. We went for lunch and ordered open faced beef and soup. We were seated right away with menus. There were only four tables being served at the time, that's including us. Service was so slow. It took twenty minutes just for the server to take our order. The soup sat in the window for ten minutes and was cold and gross by the time it arrived. I was really looking forward to the mashed potatoes...they were green and also gross as well as the beef. The only thing that was eatable was the crust of the bread. I feel it was extremely over priced for the food and service we received. The breakfast buffet is Awesome, if you like bacon, your in for a treat, yum yum. The owner is real nice as well as host. I heard from grapevine thier brunches are very good, I've had dinner here as well, everything was good. Next I'm going to try to make a brunch. read more

I just moved to town and had a buddy visiting. We didn't have too much time for breakfast so we found this diamond in the rough right down the road from my place. We heard about this restaurant and what it's about and just had to try it. I think that the concept and the hearts of the owners are in the right place. I ordered the burger with fries. The fact that they left off the pickles and didn't bring the promised coleslaw were minor issues. The burger and waffle fries were very delicious. My wife had the blueberry pancakes and they were outstanding. I wouldn't say the service was bad, however, I would say our server was very inexperienced. read more

I can only echo what so many have said before me. How can such a wonderful concept go so terribly wrong? Service is horribly slow, and our food was cold when delivered to our table. The food on the breakfast buffet when we tried it on our second visit was also cold. Complaints about food temperature were met with blank stares. We will not try again. read more

Was driving by this place and saw the sign, decided to try it out. The food was good, but the menu is very limited. It seems to cater to southern type cuisine. The service was good, the young lady was very polite and efficient. It is nice that some of the proceeds go to help veterans. The signage for the place is not easily seen unless you are looking at the place. I would recommend they advertise with bigger signs and hit up the local VFWs, American Legions, etc. read more

I always try to eat at non chain places just to support locals and get better food. A lot of times at the big chains the care just isn't there. Well we scored big here. The restaurant was opened up recently to honor veterans, done by a Marines family. The cuisine is comfort food cafe. They have just about every southern food you could want, and a buffet on Wednesdays and Sunday. I had a burger that was in the top 5 of my life. Juicy without being greasy, I got it with raw onion on it that was a nice thick slab. If you think about having a well cooked burger at an outdoor charcoal grill barbecue this is it. We also had waffle fries and they were crisp and not soggy like most I've had. The profits from the restaurant go to support a veterans group in Gary. If you're a vet, help your brothers out and stop in. I'm ex Air Force, this gets 4 Semper Fly's from me! read more

Man, I WANTED to like this place. I support small businesses & one that aids Vets? This is a place I want to go to. We walked in and were directed to seat ourselves & sometime would be with us soon. So we sat. 3 other tales came in and were told the same thing within the next 20 minutes. The girl came around and passed out menus to the new tables except ours. I had to ask for one. Hubby ordered chicken & waffles & I ordered a burger. I watched my husband's chicken sit in the window for almost 10 minutes while other orders were completed. When we got the food it was lukewarm. His chicken had the wing tips left on it and his fingers were tacky from the grease. My burger was unseasoned and almost raw in the middle. Even our drinks were bad. Flat Pepsi & weird tasting lemonade. We will not be back. read more

I applaud the idea because my husband is a vet...but, after being seated it was 15 minutes before we got a cup of coffee and another 20 before our order was taken and it wasn't crowded. The young man made no apologies. My husband ordered breakfast which he enjoyed, I ordered the buffet. The food was good but cold, I believe the steam table wasn't working, so I had only one plate, I asked if I could take the small amount on my plate home & was told no, & I still tipped, but I won't be back...sorry read more

My wife and I went to the Vets Cafe and Grill for dinner last night. We both had a burger and waffle fries, regular and sweet potato. The burger was a build your own with a choice of toppings. I had jalapenos, raw onion and mushrooms with Swiss cheese. We both were very pleased. We will definitely go back! read more

I decided to check out this place for the first time after reading a lot of great reviews recently on Facebook. My great uncle is a veteran himself so he had a great time chatting with our server and owner about the history of this place. The food may be priced a little high, but you have to realize that proceeds generated by the restaurant are used to assist homeless veterans which makes it all worth it. Not to mention the AMOUNT of delicious food they give you! We really enjoyed ourselves and LOVED the food- especially the catfish.
