I brought our newly acquired Akita in for a visit with surgery who decided we should run tests to rule out cancer since Buddy had a torn ACL and a couple large lumps on his body. (We acquired him due to my daughter's father in law passing away suddenly). We found out he does have cancer in his arm we were referred to oncology who was able to do a biopsy that same day but then said Buddy needed to stay overnight due to it was the latter part of the day and Buddy was still groggy. I was really hoping for an answer today on the grade of the cancer since last time we had an answer in 2 days although they said it can take 10 or more. We are two days away from 7 days so hopefully the call will come soon. We have spent in excess of $5k in less than two weeks there so I am hoping Buddy's cancer stage is a priority. We really were not prepared for Buddy to spend the night as it was not even mentioned to us when they said they could do the biopsy same day but we want what is best for Buddy. The pending results will guide us whether to do radiation so we can do his TPLO or just make him comfortable until we have to make a difficult decision. read more

Our little pup woke up on Tuesday morning to our girl in pain, and we knew we had to take her somewhere and quick. When we got to VEG they took her and started examining her while checking us in to make sure that she was getting the care she needed. One she was stable they asked us questions about what happened so they can treat her. After examining her, they gave her meds and helped us figure out next steps which ended up being going to a neurologist at an emergency hospital nearby. They called ahead and provided all the info so when we got there we were able to check in and get her to where she needed to be without all the stress of the paperwork. Dogtor Ting Ting and the techs were super friendly and made sure that we were okay and that our girl was okay at any given point while we waited for results and answers. We feel so comforted knowing that they were nearby and at the ready should anything happen. read more

We brought our almost 20-year-old cat to this emergency hospital during one of the most painful moments a pet parent can face. From the start, we clearly explained his extensive medical history, including chronic kidney disease and thyroid issues. Given his condition, we expected a focused, compassionate, and medically appropriate approach. Instead, we were encouraged to pursue numerous unnecessary tests before even checking his kidney function, which should have been an immediate priority given his history. When the lab results finally came back showing values more than 10 times the normal limit--so extreme they had to be run twice to obtain a result--we were still being pushed toward IV fluids costing $3,000-$5,000, with almost no discussion of realistic prognosis. Shockingly, euthanasia was barely mentioned, and only after significant time had passed. As healthcare providers ourselves, we were deeply disturbed and confused by this approach. The prognosis was clearly grave. Encouraging aggressive and extremely expensive interventions under those circumstances felt less like compassionate medicine and more like taking advantage of grieving pet owners in an incredibly vulnerable moment. I cannot imagine putting a family through prolonged suffering--both emotional and financial--when the outcome is already so poor. The only reason this is not a one-star review is because the vet techs were kind, patient, and compassionate, and they respectfully allowed us the time we needed to say goodbye to our beloved cat. For that, we are truly grateful. However, based on our experience, I would strongly caution other pet owners to be prepared to ask hard questions and advocate for themselves during emotionally overwhelming situations. No one should feel pushed into costly treatments without a clear, honest discussion of prognosis and all end-of-life options. read more

They helped us through the difficult decision to let him go over the Rainbow Bridge, and answered all our questions and concerns. I've now been here twice in the past handful of months. For context: I've worked in the medical field for over a decade. This place is disgusting. They don't understand basic medical practices, safety and hygiene. This place will guaranteed have many dogs walking out of here with infections. My first trip - vomit and blood were all over the floor from the front door to the main desk when I arrived. Only 1 dog was being treated with 3 people working, I let them know of the vomit/blood and no one cleaned it up in my hour and half there. My dog was treated in the waiting area seat, not a table and during that, the needle slipped out, my dogs blood squirted on me and the floor and I was given a gauze to clean it up. They didn't attempt to clean it in the proper ways. Total cost ~$1000! 2nd trip - my wife took our dog. They again attempted to treat her on the waiting room floor simply on a towel. Our dog had an open wound on her paw and was bleeding on the towel and floor. My wife didn't accept treatment on the floor (thankfully) so she got a table. All items used to clean up our dogs bloody paw sat on the table for over 30 minutes unattended and not disposed of properly. Total cost ~400 This place is a walking infection waiting to happen. I will be shocked if more dogs don't come out of this place with dangerous infections even for simple procedures. Whoever manages this facility needs to train their employees on proper medical procedures and have more strict policies in place that their employees must follow. Only reason for 2 stars is the employees were all nice people. Nothing bad to say about how they interacted with us. They are just clearly not all trained properly and this facility is not run like a proper veterinary/medical facility. read more

100% recommend. About a month ago our puppy fell very ill and was extremely lethargic, vomiting, coughing and lungs sounded full of fluid, fever, and diarrhea. We honestly thought we were going to lose her. They took her overnight because the first hospital we took her too could only keep her until they closed (Premier Veterinary Services which I also recommend!). The doctors were amazing and nursed her back to health. They have options if you want to spend the night with your dog (pull out couch in a room to sleep on). The nurses and doctors there really care about the animals. During the hardest time they helped our Nova. We deeply thank everyone who helped our girl get better! My sweet girl Peanut cracked a back toenail on ice while outside. It was more than I could handle first aid. She wiggles and squirmed too much. Within 45 seconds of being inside there was one person (Stephanie) getting to the bottom of the visit. She was such a sweet woman who you could tell really loves animals. Then after telling the story once, I figured I'd have to repeat it to 2-3 more people before I had a doctor look at her foot. The whole time I was explaining I didn't know but Dr. Greg Chernok was quietly listening to me. He sat down next to me. Peanut was examined and babied right there in my arms. Talk about "bedside manner", this vet calmed me down and made me sure we came to the correct place. Stephanie, Nikki, and Dr Chernok swiftly had her cracked nail removed, bandaged, and disinfected. We ended up with a cone on her head, a belly full of kitty food, and a big club foot bandage. Got her home with some pain medication and she slept through the night. I would for sure come here again if I had to, not that anyone wants a trip to the 24 hour vet. If you do have a need for a veterinarian please call VEG on Lake Cook and McHenry. I have mixed feelings about VEG. We brought our dog there and he was very sick, near death. He was a very large breed dog and we needed help to bring him in. No one moved with any sense of urgency. We arrived around 8am and it was an hour before our dog received any intervention beyond the assessment. They don't do anything beyond the initial assessment without securing payment. At that time, the vet told us that our dog would need about $1900 in tests for her to be able to diagnose what was wrong and know how to treat him. I told her that we couldn't afford that amount and asked if there was another way she could make a diagnosis, she told us no and that our dog could recover but she wasn't sure. We felt like we had no choice but to pay. By noon the tests still had not been done. I had to keep asking about them and about the results, too. The results would not be back for another 2 hours, so we went home because we were exhausted. The vet called with the results and it wasn't good news. Then she told us that our dog would need to stay at VEG for at least 4 more days at a cost of $2500-$3000 per day. I told her that we absolutely cannot afford it and that we do be coming to take him home later that evening, she told me that EUTHANASIA would be our best option. I was shocked! It was as if she was saying if you can't afford to pay our fee to keep your dog here, then you should just put your 8 yr old dog down. Our dog ended up dying an hour later. But when I went to do the paperwork for cremation, noticed that they have Care Credit. No one told us about it, or offered that to us as an option. I spoke with the medical director, who was very nice and compassionate, who apologized. It would have changed our decision on the course of treatment had we known about that option. They tried to make up for it by giving us the most expensive cremation option gratis. But then no one called to notify us that the ashes were ready for pickup- for 10 days after they were ready! Then I was supposed to meet with the office manager so she could explain to me how this happened and she didn't even show up to the meeting that she scheduled! They just did not care about us! I will not take another pet there. It is a corporate chain and they take advantage of pet owners who are vulnerable. They also charge exorbitant fees compared to other emergency vet clinics. read more

The staff created a perfect space for him to Passover in a private family room with so much support. A 13 and 10 yr old were cared for wonderfully before, during, and after the death process. Wasn't a big fan was there for 3 hours, took them forever to run the tests, they asked me if my pup had worm meds I said yes but they were due for a refill and they said they could do that. Called back today they never ran the blood test for that so now I have to pay another vet for that. Mentioned she had trouble breathing and they did nothing to address it. Brought her home and she's still wheezing a bit. Wished they would have done more than give me a probiotic and some other dust to sprinkle on her food. An antibiotic fixed it last time with a different vet. Looks like I'll be avoiding this place. Never in my life have I paid $1400 for the same tests to be ran at a different vet. read more

Our beloved family dog of almost 15 years suddenly showed signs that his body was breaking down on a Monday in August. Our regular veterinarian's office was closing, and so I called VEG in Buffalo Grove. They took such wonderful care of our dog and our family from the first phone call until the end. We were grateful that our boy had a peaceful, painless, and dignified passing in the compassionate care room. He was surrounded by family and a few kind and gentle VEG Vet and associates. A week after his passing we received a sympathy card with 6 different personal hand-written messages from the fine people who work at VEG. We were very touched by the gesture. read more

I would recommend this ER vet in a heartbeat. We came in at 1AM because our 10 year old special needs English Bull Terrier ate a literal bag FULL of chocolate coins and candy, wrappers and all. We rushed him over and the vet and techs were all calm and compassionate from the start. We felt more at ease right away (which is saying something in a medical emergency!). We ended up staying there until 6 AM, where he went through 4 rounds of (very colorful) emesis, throwing up whole coins and wrappers like some kind of nightmare leprechaun dog who ate the pot of gold, as well as xrays, subcutaneous fluids, and charcoal to absorb any leftover toxins. Through it all, the techs or vet sat with him during these bouts, handling him (and us) gently and respectfully. They were all willing to answer my many questions throughout the night. The vet (super nice guy) explained any remaining risks and exactly what to watch for in the next few days, just in case. Our sweet angel boy is home and doing just fine, thankfully. Most expensive dog dessert ever haha, but honestly for all that they did, I think the pricing was fair, especially at an Emergency vet. Also, having the privilege of sitting there for hours and seeing how they interacted with all the other patients and boarded animals, I saw genuine care and concern for each creature that came in. Hopefully we never need to see them again, but if we ever do have another emergency, this will be where we go. P.S. I will spare you, dear reader, and not attach a photo to this review. But I will say our dog felt like somewhat of a celebrity based on his beautiful Jackson Pollock-esque colorful works of art. read more

I don't write reviews often, but this place is so awesome and if your pet needs emergency care, this is where you want them to be. We brought our dog in for some serious tummy problems in the middle of the night and had to bring her back a few hours later after her symptoms worsened- both times the staff was incredible and attended to us almost immediately. They put us at ease and got right to work to make our pup feel better. She ended up having to stay for 24 hours and they made sure to give us updates the entire time. We brought our dog in since his vomit became pink tinged after a couple episodes. We were seated in the waiting room area to be check by the team. The team had taken vitals on our dog and the doctor proceeded to just palpate his belly. She offered us to do an xray to check for blockage or give some type of shot for diagnostics which we opted out to as he was not presenting any other symptoms. The whole visit was probably 15-20 minutes at most. I think it's absurd to have charged us $200 for all that when we left with no legit diagnosis. I also had wished they were transparent at the very beginning about how much the visit was going to be. read more

Would give more stars if I could!!! This morning on our morning walk, my dog got stung by a bee in her right rear paw and began limping. Of course this happened before our vet was open and being worried about an allergic reaction, I brought her to VEG in Buffalo Grove. I was met at the door and brought right in. The girl checking me in was so sweet and empathetic. The tech that took my pup's vitals was so gentle and compassionate. I only had to wait about 10 minutes before the vet on duty came over and looked at my baby. She listened to her heart and breathing, checked out her face and gums for swelling and assured me she would be fine. She advised me to give her Benadryl for a few days and keep an eye on her. When I asked her how to pay the bill, she told me not to worry about it & to have a good day. I almost cried. I was so touched by the kindness and compassion by everyone there and knowing they are nearby for any emergencies is so comforting. Keep up the great work VEG!!!! read more

Highly ethical people here. Our cat bolted out the door, got skunked and looked like someone who was just pepper sprayed: drooling, red watery eyes, the whole bit. My wife freaked out insisting on taking him to the vet even though it was 8PM. They calmly told us there really wasn't anything they could do and didn't want to charge us for a visit when he really only needed a good bath. Let me start off by saying the receptionists and vet techs were absolutely AMAZING. My review is based solely on the vet we were dealing with, Dr. Jailyn Hernandez. Her attitude and overall demeanor was awful. No compassion whatsoever. She was pushing for eye removal surgery for our 15 year old, very frail dog. Anytime I asked for a price estimate or asked how much something would be, she acted so inconvenienced and constantly rolled her eyes. I understand she is there to make money, but have some empathy. Upon looking up her license, she's a very new vet. I'd recommend giving her some training on customer service and how to be a decent human being. read more

I wanted to give praise to Veterinary Emergency Group animal pet hospital on Lake Cook and 83. We had an absolutely incredible experience with our fur baby. The care for our pup was top notch. Our lab/pittie mix, Chloe, had been unwell for a few days and finally at 3am Sunday morning, I brought her to VEG. She was just not herself- very weak, not eating and vomiting. Their emergency room is 'open concept', meaning you see all the pets coming in and out and can see their ailments, etc. I didn't love that since we ended up seeing an old dog in cardiac arrest. He needed CPR and sadly they couldn't save him. It was devastating. But I understand how beneficial this concept is. This enables people to be by their pets side every step of the way... instead of the pet being swooped into a back room where you don't have contact with them. The vet came over to us after I witnessed this and apologized and said that unfortunately with an open concept ER we don't always see things we want to. I asked to be moved with my pup to a private room, which was no problem at all! They ran several tests on my pup in order to come to a correct diagnosis. They had to take blood several times throughout our stay and got on the floor with Chloe, played with her, comforted her, etc. they even mentioned that the chair pulled out into a bed and I could go to sleep if I wanted. Additionally they said if she had to stay in the ER as an inpatient, that I could stay too for the duration of her stay whether it be a day or two or longer. Finally at 9am Sunday morning, after running several tests, she was given a diagnosis. They kept her all day Sunday with a discharge of Monday morning to ensure she could get the care she needed to be safe at home. Additionally they reached out to our vets office and gave them a full rundown of her diagnosis and care plan. At VEG, we were assigned to two different, incredible doctors (one on the night shift and one on the day shift), and about 5 nurses who oversaw Chloe's care. They called, emailed, and texted throughout her short stay when we couldn't be there with her. They took time to explain the autoimmune disease that she was diagnosed with and told me to call with any questions, etc, even after being discharged. We went back late Monday evening after I noticed our pup still wasn't eating. They welcomed us with open arms, gave her an anti-nausea med and lots of cuddles and we were on our way. She is back to normal now and I'm so thankful that we brought her there. Our care was phenomenal. I would highly recommend them! We have two fur babies and if I need their services again, I would go back in a heartbeat. THANK YOU VEG! read more

I brought my 1 year old French bulldog in severe pain. We waited over an hour and a half for a doctors assistance as she said making screaming sounds panting and was obviously uncomfortable. There were other dogs ahead of us that were all stable. The two doctors that I seen in the office, mostly sat there typing on their computers. The Vet tech seemed a little upset because no one was evaluating my dog. Finally she's seen her for about a total of five minutes. If I was lucky to let me know she had a back injury and needed to go home and have rest with a pain injection. They didn't even put her in a room that evaluated her at my feet. After $350 I was sent home to bring my dog into veterinary specialty medicine in Bannockburn where my dog had emergency spinal surgery. The professionalism at veg was horrible. I shouldn't even have been charged for such terrible services. I recommend nobody ever goes there and will make sure that I tell everyone I know of my experience Pet owner beware. There are so many emergency medical facilities for animals. Please take advantage of them. Hopefully this one goes out of business. read more

I've never been to a vet so welcoming and inviting. I can't say enough good things about this place. I rushed my dog Maggie in and the staff immediately welcomed her with open arms. They took such great care of her, and made sure we were informed of everything they were doing. Everyone was so kind and helpful, really made a scary situation much easier. Was wondering if this location was open yet this evening after my dog ate something she shouldn't have, and we made it there on their first day open! Everybody at the front desk, all the veterinary nurses, and the veterinarian herself, Dr. Leiah Carney were all so excellent and compassionate, and I was so thankful my dog was in their care. They were super quick and informative, and I found them to be pretty reasonably priced considering it's an emergency veterinary facility. Although I hope my dog stays out of trouble and we don't have to go back anytime soon, it's such a relief to know such a good facility is in the area. Our 14 1/2-year-old mix breed began to have severe breathing issues on Sunday evening. I called ahead to notify them that we were on our way.
