If I could give them 10 stars I would. My experience here today November 22, 2024 makes me question every NEGATIVE review left about this practice. I am 54 years old. My cat is 18 years 8 months old and my last cat made it to 20 years 9 months. I am very diligent about my pet's healthcare and I know a bad Vet when I see one. You can't tell me this man Dr. Holden doesn't LOVE animals and doesn't LOVE his job. We just moved to this area in July 2024. Today was our first experience and he made my wife and I feel like we were his favorite clients. We had a warm welcome when we came in. Our cat's appointment started on time (not that it really makes a difference for me because I understand things happen.). Dr. Holden was very patient, friendly and thorough with his exam. He explained in detail and PLAIN ENGLISH of what he was doing and what he was looking for. He made us feel good and confident about his abilities. That means the world to us. You know in your heart when you come across a health care professional that takes their job seriously. He takes his job and responsibilities seriously. If you're looking for glitz, glamour, LED Lighting, 90 inch screen TV's with surround sound then this practice is not for you. If you want a dedicated health care professional with decades of experience to tend to your loved one then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this practice. read more

The vet is professional, however the receptionist is not professional at all. Even the first visit had to wait for hours due to emergency, as a former vet assistant which i can understand. However, for the second visit. I call on Jan 11 around 10am to schedule an appointment for my kitty second vaccine. They said they are fully book till next Friday (1/22). So I made an appointment at 3:40pm that day. When I arrived they said they do not have any record of the appointment and there is nothing she can do today, other then reschedule it to next week. I have to take a day off for the appointment and the receptionist didn't even apologize for her mistake!! read more

I came here right after adopting my bunny (Meadow) who had a pretty mild eye infection and had been at the shelter for a while because of it. I wanted to get it checked out ASAP to make sure it wasn't anything urgent. I was a little worried about bringing her to a generic vet for the issue but the closest exotic pet vet was an hour away from me and booked out pretty far, so I thought I'd try it out. The vet was AMAZING and very knowledgeable. He was incredibly kind to me and Meadow and talked me through everything he was going to do. Meadow's pretty shy and jumpy but she seemed to really be at ease with him. She ended up thankfully just having some bad conjunctivitis that has gone away within a month of our visit with some consistent antibiotics just like the doc said. Nothing too major and the pricing was definitely fair. I brought meadow in a tiny carrier I got when I adopted her, and the staff went above and beyond and sent me home with a much larger more comfortable crate for Meadow. His care for animals and passion for his job was really evident. On the outside it definitely doesn't look like much but the quality of care was pretty amazing. I'm new to this (first time dog owner). My puppy is only 3 months old. It was time for his 2nd shots and after calling around to several clinics, Severn Square had the best prices. I was sceptic at first because so many other vets had better reviews but this clinic is 5 min from my house so I decided to give them a try. They have a friendly staff, the clinic is clean but somewhat outdated, and the vet was patient with me and answered all my questions. My dog did get wound up during the examination and made it hard for the assistant to hold him down. I didn't like how impatient the doctor got with her before calling for a second set of hands. It made me uncomfortable because I could tell she was embarrassed. But, overall I was pleased with the service I received and feel that my "puppy son" was in good hands! read more

Dr. Holden was so amazing today!! I brought my sweet dwarf hamster in on an emergency and he was so personable and honest with me. He really did everything he possibly could to help my fur baby and words will never express my gratitude, if I would've tried taking her anywhere else everyone would've just told me to leave. There are some great things about this office. Mainly, the staff and vet do care alot about pets and are very genuine and caring with everything they do. That being said, I am a little peeved with the way the vet runs things cost-wise. As someone with a few pets, I've been to other vets and this vet particularly is very cost focused. While i understand that in an ideal world, pets would get every possible test and work up to make sure their safe and healthy, I really dont have an extra $300 to shell out every time I bring my dog in. This vet always "recommends" extra tests/vaccines and its a constant back and forth with them about what is actually necessary to complete. I brought one of my dogs into get neutered and he wanted to do a physical, vaccinations, and was trying to sell me all these tests. I do care alot about my pets health, but as long as their required vaccinations are complete, they are neutered and healthy, im not too concerned about my happy, energetic puppy having major health problems at this point in his life. Overall, The care is top notch here, but I dont like the consumer treatment. Please be up front about requirements vs. "extras" and explain them fully. Don't just expect me to be concerned and swipe my card for a couple hundred. read more

Such sweet people! Dr. Holden is so sincere about his work. He took the time to talk to me about EXACTLY what my dog needed regarding treatment and what my options were. Asked if I had questions, etc. I liked how straight forward he was. The office is clean and the receptionist and nurses were very sweet. I only have one dog now (not two) :( BUT I will take my other dog here for future visits. I need a doctor who is thorough and straight to the point like DR. Holden. read more

I was able to make a same day appointment with Dr. Holden at Severn Square Veterinary Hospital and I appreciate them getting me in on short notice. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and great with our dog Roxy. Dr. Holden was very thorough and didn't try to up sell me on anything. I have read a few other posts regarding the use of leather gloves by the staff. They used them on my dog, but it's purely to protect themselves if a dog would bite. Additionally, they were very gentle when examining our dog. I will be taking her back for a teeth cleaning. I would recommend Severn Square Veterinary Hospital without reservation! read more

I will NEVER EVER take my dog back to Dr. Holden at Severn Square Veterinarian Hospital. When I was thinking about adopting a puppy from a private breeder in Annapolis back in August 2017, I took the pup to Dr. Holden to get a well-puppy check-up before executing the sale/adoption. This was my first experience ever dealing with Dr. Holden. During the examination, I thought he was a little rough and matter-of-fact with the tiny pooch, causing him to scream out in pain several times (particularly when examining his ears). In an effort to assuage my obvious concern, Dr. Holden dismissively explained that the pup was being overly dramatic and wasn't experiencing any real pain. I reluctantly accepted his explanation, but was still bothered by the overall experience. After he completed his testing and examination, Dr. Holden gave the pup a clean bill of health, so on his word, I ended up adopting him. About a month later, I enrolled my pup in the doggy health care plan at Banfield Hospital located inside the Petsmart at Arundel Mills. My little guy was examined and cared for by Dr. Emily Fitzgibbons (excellent vet). I noted during her comprehensive examination that she was very kind, compassionate and gentle with my pup and he never once cried out in pain (even when she examined his ears). Also during her exam, Dr. Fitzgibbons immediately diagnosed my pup with having Luxating Patellae in both knees (a potentially costly & painfully debilitating condition). Heartbroken at hearing this news, I recontacted Dr. Holden to find out how he could have missed such an easily diagnoseable condition. He offered to re-examine my little boy for free. During his second examination, Dr. Holden was once again excessively rough with my pup. So much so, that this time, my pup screeched out in pain and bit Dr. Holden on the hand, drawing blood. I was aghast with shock and horror as I had never ever seen even one iota of aggression in my pup before or since that moment. This time around, Dr. Holden spotted the Luxating Patellae and candidly admitted that he missed this diagnosis the first time around. He apologized profusely to me, attributing the oversight to human error and the tiny size of my pup. While understandable, his explanation and apology was of no consolation to me, as I was now in possession of a potentially gimpy dog which I had paid a lot of money for, all on the basis of his professional medical opinion. But the story doesn't end there. The very next day after Dr. Holden's examination, my little guy suddenly became very sick and went into renal failure. He was gravely ill for about 2-months. I took him to a number of veterinarian facilities around the area for testing and treatment. At one point, doctors were talking about euthanasia but I held out, hoping and praying for the best. Thank God, because my little guy's condition improved; but he will always have kidney issues to deal with. So, after visiting several veterinarians, experiencing multiple hospital stays, undergoing a litany of tests/procedures and spending a couple thousand dollars, I still don't know what caused my dog to lapse into this illness/condition. For all I know, it could have been yet another congenital defect that went undiagnosed by Dr. Holden. Now I don't blame Dr. Holden for my pup's condition. But I do feel that he failed me on several fronts, given that I had paid him good money to examine my pup to gain an overall impression of his health before I committed to buying/adopting him. While I absolutely adore my little boy, I never thought I would end up having to care for a special needs pup. Like I said previously, I will NEVER EVER go back to Dr. Holden. I think his medicine and his practice is antiquated, ineffectual and outdated and I think he was excessively brutal with my puppy. P.S. I have since seen a few other negative reviews about Dr. Holden on the internet. I only wish I had done my research before going to him. read more

This is the best vet I have ever had for my pets! I have been taking my cat there for years and I took my two rabbits in today and Dr. Holden was excellent! He really makes sure to take him time with your pet and explain to you everything that he is doing while he is doing it. He also makes sure to ask all the right questions and will not allow you to leave the office unsatisfied! The staff is also very friendly and attentive. I called to make the appointment for the same day and they made sure to squeeze us in! If you live in the area you will my be disappointed with the service you get at this small and personal clinic. 10+ years' experience with Dr. Holden and his amazing staff across two dogs, one very small and one very large. Can't say enough good things about Severn Square. When we relocated to Maryland from California in 2004, we initially started with a vet on recommendation from someone on Ft. Meade. This vet struggled to deal with our 9-year-old​ Jack Russell's skin issues, which had been exacerbated by the change in coast and climate. After going through months of this vet guessing incorrectly as to cause and treatment--charging us heavily along the way--we took our little guy to Dr. Holden a few months later on recommendation from a coworker whose dogs were seen there. Dr. Holden got our boy's symptoms and itching/pain under management​ immediately​ and made a referral to a dermatology specialist in Catonsville (Dr. Buerger, also excellent), who addressed the root cause. All manner of issues presented in our aging dog over the next seven years, from deafness​ to blindness, and eventually the combination edema/tumor in his head that led us to put him down at age 16. Dr. Holden's bedside manner during those last years was always great, always full of information and education. That bedside manner was especially important at the end when he guided us through a difficult process, helping us make our own, informed decision when the time was right, versus recommending euthanasia. We waited a few years before getting another dog, this time a female Bullmastiff, the polar opposite of our JRT in every way. As a condition of sale, the breeder made us book initially with a 'holistic' vet, and we chose one who is thankfully no longer in business. I won't run this entire school of thought/practice into the ground, but in this vet's case, my skepticism was well founded, and after a thankfully minor injury was treated very poorly, we somewhat sheepishly called Dr. Holden again when our girl was around 6 months old. That was roughly five years ago, and she's been through a few issues of her own, a couple requiring a ​referral, but always with Dr. Holden as our GP and first point of contact. His professionalism and respect for our time have always been apparent, he and his staff always show lots of love to our giant girl, and I've never felt anything but confidence that Severn Square VH would do the right thing by her, or our Jack Russell before her. Had we not relocated cross country again earlier this year, Dr. Holden and his team would still be seeing us regularly. I can't begin to thank them enough for the care provided to our dogs​ but hope this review goes a little way as an attempt at gratitude. Choosing a vet is certainly difficult, but I'd caution anyone against making a decision based on anecdotal perspectives of singular incidents, let alone an aggregate 'star' rating. My perspective is also limited of course, but over many dozens of visits with two dogs over a 15-year span, we had nothing but overwhelmingly positive experiences at Severn Square, and I hope they continue to serve the community for many years. Just moved here a few months back and decided to take my TWO cats here for their annual exam. The exam took two hours and only ONE of my cats got examined. The veterinarian is very friendly and so is the staff, but I do not recommend this place. They use huge leather gloves that smell of urine to handle the animals because they're DEATHLY afraid of getting scratched or bitten. The cat that wasn't examined gets very angry, and yes, makes a lot of noise, but not so much that any of the other veterinarians we've seen couldn't handle her. When I put her on the table and was situating her she started to fuss and instead of letting me handle my cat that I've raised for 6 years now, all 3 people started yelling at me to let her go. I've never seen a veterinary team so scared of an animal before. They were so afraid I got bitten that they were going to call the ambulance! I hadn't even gotten scratched until I tried to close her kennel and she was so petrified after that she took a swipe and left a DOT of blood right above my thumb. The vet literally took me in the back to treat my "wound" like there was an incision about to be made and then went on for 20 minutes about how he suggests to get my cats vaccinated for "the cat scratch disease", just in case! Then goes on to tell me that I need to bring my cat in later and put her in a fishtank-like enclosure where they will put her under ANESTHESIA to receive her annual exam! Now, a week later, I get a call notifying me that a report was made to Anne arundel county claiming I was TREATED for a scratch! Someone will now have to visit my house to see that my cat has no neurological signs of rabies....even though she's an indoor cat and has updated rabies shots!!!! This is so absurd! I've never been so displeased in my life. I wasn't going to rant about this places service until I recieved that call. read more

If you love your animals for the love of God do not take them here !!! We have gone through a literal nightmare with these people. The vet here is terrified of cats. He freaked out that our cat didn't want to be in a strange office with a pansy veterinarian who is terrified of a small, harmless animal. He barely looked at the cat and didnt want to handle her because she is feisty about vet visits. Animals can sense fear and veterinarians should really be aware of that if they have an education or just general common sense. The vet barely even looked at our pet before diagnosing that our cat has rabies !!!!!! Our cat stays in doors all day and does not go outside. He told us we need to take our pet back and that my wife needs to be treated for a small scratch at a hospital !! We said we would never take our pet back there so he called animal control on us !!!! The animal control guy showed up to our house and took one look at our cat and was like like what is he talking about ? She walked up to him and was playful and the animal control person just laughed. Rabies ?!?!? This guy needs to get his head examined. This guy needs to get his vet license revoked. Never take your pets here ever, ever, ever. Worst experience ever. read more

Dr. Holden and his staff have been great with our dog. They are military friendly and have a lot of experience with military personnel and their pets (overseas travel requirements, etc.). Dr. Holden has a heart for what he does and I felt the prices were very reasonable. He's patient and gives a lot of valuable advice. read more
