I actually had a great experience at this small and cozy place in east Village today. Wandering with my friend to get some coffee and dessert and finding that most of the Yelp recommended ones were either closed or had gone out of business, we stumbled upon this place on a pleasant Sunday evening. i was immediately drawn by the warm atmosphere this place had, waiters hustling and pleasant in their approach and a crowd that seems to be enjoying the place. We sat close to the bar, and my friend immediately recognized a famous French designer named "Jean Pierre" or something at the bar, dressed all in black with short white hair. After confirming on his I-phone that yes indeed it was him, we finally got to our Latte's and Tiramisu's. I am proposing an IPhone app similar to "Shazaam' that can Tag celebrities and confirm their identities!! The service was great, drew a very decent group of patrons, and the music was very good too. Not sure how this place is still in business As someone that has been in the restaurant business for over 10 years, this place seems to go out of their way to defy everything that a successful restaurant should do first and foremost, MANAGEMENT DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE DINING EXPERIENCE OR EVEN SOCIAL MEDIA. The odds of management even replying to a one star review are slim to none, When we had dinner there last week, management was openly yelling at their servers, fighting with each other in front of their customers, and after receiving 2 entrees that were both under-cooked and telling management , their response was simply, "did they re-heat it for you - if so, then everything is fine". Also told them that the bathroom toilets werent flushing (i dont want to describe what was left in there) and there was no toilet paper (inexcusable for any restaurant) and management didnt even apologize or seem surprised As several Yelpers have mentioned, the downstairs is both dark, dirty and dingy, so even if there is a 15 minute wait upstairs, by all means, IF YOU DO WANT TO EAT THERE, wait for an upstairs table, but my advice is to simply go to any one of the great hundred plus restaurants within 2 blocks of the place. The food is OK for an Italian restaurant (we tried ordering Veal Parmigiana and the server said "THIS ISNT AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT") , but the service is terrible and prices are a bit on the pricey side for what you receive, and you need to bring all cash The East Village is a gem for finding small, cute restaurants with great food, there is NO REASON TO VISIT THIS PLACE, I am happy to recommend at least 3 other Italian restaurant within 3 blocks of here and countless other places in the same area, where you can have a far better dining experience for the same price or less, that accepts credit cards and are far cleaner with better service read more

I first heard about this restaurant after seen them On fox 5 news New York w my girls Rosanna and Laurie. On a cold New York Friday November 21,2019 I was craving a authentic pasta, upon walking in could tell who the owner is, he was Yelling whistling and on FaceTime and with only 2 tables in the whole restaurant. Ok maybe it's part of the charm. I had the carbonara pasta and when I asked the server for water or fresh Parmesan she looked at me as if I was a bother. Upon leaving and paying CASH ONLY I left a gracious tip! After waving goodbye to owner and trying to say thank you he looked at me as if I was a homeless man Off the street who had asked to use the bathroom. This place has been around forever and they seem to have plenty of steady clientele so I guess they're not too worried about a few disgruntled customers. There's not much to complain about, but as far as Italian food and service goes I've definitely had better. The bread that comes with the table is really the tip off. It's grilled which means they take bread that's past it's prime and warm it up to make it softer. Didn't help. The pasta dishes were ok but pretty small portions for an Italian restaurant. When we asked about the happy hour specials that are advertised on Yelp we were told that the happy hour only applies to the bar area. Really? Who gets a pitcher of sangria (which is one of the specials) to share at the bar? Wouldn't it be much more comfortable at a table? Lastly, it took forever to get a waiter to come over. We were at the restaurant for hours mostly because we were either waiting to get a menu, get a specials menu, order or wait for the bill. I was forced to come over here after sitting down outside at Mocha next door on the corner. I got to Mocha at 10:20 PM on a Monday, and was a bit disappointed that their kitchen was already closed. Blessing in disguise. We moved over to Della Pace around 11 PM. The inside was PACKED since there was live music. I had no issue getting a table outside, but within minutes crowds more people came by. A for atmosphere. The server was a young Italian guy, and extremely obliging. He recommended the lasagna, which was good, though nothing that blew my mind. Similar on the bread. After coming back here a second time, I can see how this place might be a 4-star place, given that it's open late, and the other entrees may be better. It feels very authentically Italian, not that I've ever been to Italy. Dessert was also okay (apple strudel). There was an apple seed in it, which I thought was cool -- guess it was made pretty fresh. But if Entenmann's is better, then I consider it just mediocre. Overall, this is a great place to come and hang out, inside or out. Good vibe. Very Euro crowd. I heard everything but English: Italian, French, and Portuguese. It's great when you are in the mood for a nice glass of white wine and a tasty pasta dish. This lovely atmospheric restaurant located in the East Village is just perfect for it. Service is very friendly, the welcoming barman offered us a couple of wine tasting before we settled for our choice. You can't go wrong with he Pino Grigio. Ok so I LOVE this place. Italian is my fave food anyway but when you manage to find an authentic Italian restaurant then you know it's going to be good. This is my second time eating here and luckily for us it's on our street so perfect excuse to pop down for a bite to eat. The bruschetta is to die for and the pasta dishes are simple and comforting. Came into a not too crowded scene, looked like there were a decent amount of open tables. We were told the only option at the moment would be to sit and eat at the bar. We expressed that we're not interested in that, then the gentleman tells us just wait one second. My girlfriend and I stand there probably for around five minutes before they clean the empty table off and have us sit. The tables are very cramped and I felt like I was having dinner with the couple next to us. The food also was pretty bland. It wasn't bad, but it was just boring. Nothing to it. My girlfriend and I both felt the same. As for the service that was definitely below average. The waitress never checked back to see if we needed anything, no refill on drinks, and we were done eating probably close to 10 minutes before she came over and we were able to ask for the check. I feel like I haven't been to many places in the US that do that. We tried the sampler bruchette (3 different ones) and I highly recommend the one with seared tuna, avocado,and mustard. For the meal, I had the Rigatoni Del Pirata, which was really good. The portion looked a bit small, but it was actually very filling since it was pretty heavy. The only thing I was iffy about was that the health rating is a B (not that it changed the fact that the food was very good). 3.5 Stars, like the average says. The restaurant is very dark. We also sat in the darkest, hottest corner. I couldn't see a thing. Why didn't they give us a candle? The waitress was also spotty, it took quite a while to get the check and to get change. The seared tuna bruschette with mustard and avocado was delicious though. The tuna was probably not that fresh, but it was the combination of the three flavors that made this gigantic piece of bruschetta taste good. (It was a 4 inch piece of bread topped with tuna and avocado.) The avocado was fresh, creamy, and cut nicely. The mustard definitely had some wasabi in it and made the dish more interesting. The bread was thin and well-toasted. It was crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. I would come back here just for this appetizer. ( 3 for $6.95) There is also a mix of 3 option, choose 3 bruschettes from the menu, but it costs slightly more (3 for $8.95). I got the rigatoni as an entree. It was baked with mushrooms and sausage. It also had the most cheese I have ever seen in a bowl. It wasn't bad, but I am not a fan of melted cheese, and I didn't know that the cheese monster would be sitting in this dish. I can't comment on this dish, other than if you really like cream and cheese, get it. Overall, a nice night, but way too hot and dark. It does have promise; I would come back for the seared tuna and to try a tomato-based pasta. read more

One of my friends swears by Via Della Pace, choosing it as her favorite Italian restaurant and top selection for birthday dinners. My first experience here, however, was for her recently annual celebration. The dining room appeared very small and cramped when glanced at through the street level facade, but I was thrilled to discover a larger basement area beneath it, which happened to cater to large party sizes like her group of 15. In fact, there were several substantial tables downstairs that were all completely packed. I had arrived to the event a bit late, so I was forced to grab a seat all the way down at one of the far ends of the rectangular table. I picked up my assigned glass and poured myself some of the ripe, fruit-filled red sangria from a nearby pitcher. It was time to get this party started! Sadly, the brew was more like a fruit punch than a mature cocktail. The wine had been diluted with massive amounts of sugar. I quickly helped myself to a slice of the delicious doughy Italian bread in order to soak up the sweetness that was overtaking my taste buds. Soon a large platter or Italian meats and cheeses was delivered to the table. I did not sample the meats, but I found the mushy mozzarella extremely bland. My Grilled Shrimp Salad was very tasty, though. The large bowl of fresh greens was topped with substantial chunks of orange, sweet fennel, tomatoes, olives, and perfectly cooked warm shrimp. It was light and delicious. The benefits of Via Della Pace were the affordable prices, massive portions, and ability to cater to large groups. What a reasonably priced romantic spot. Have been here twice and if you're not too famished I'd recommend sharing the sampler of three (seared tuna, salmon piece and prosciutto di parma are my top recommendations) and one main course with one dining companion. On warmer nights, the outside seats will remind you of grotty Roman streets. There's one outdoor spot that is elevated and secluded from everyone else and albeit small table its quite the quirky ambiance. I came here with two friends in June. We walked around St. Marks for some time looking for a place to eat but couldn't decide on where to go. we were close to losing hope when we took a small detour and my friend spotted Via Della Pace. The place looks really nice from outside, there is just something appealing about it and warm. There are tables outside but they would comfortably fit two people but probably not more. We were greeted by the Italian owner on the restaurant's steps, who proceeded to flirt with my friend. An interesting welcome indeed. The inside of the restaurant is somewhat dark, but if you are lucky enough to get a table facing the outside you get a beautiful view of the street as well as some natural sun light. I ordered the "Spaghetti Al Filetto Di Pomodoro. It was ok, but it wasn't too great, my one friend ordered the "Salamone E Asparagi" and her thoughts were pretty similar. However, the drinks my friends got (I wish I could remember what they were) were unbelievably tasty, so I definitely recommend looking at the drinks menu. The service at this place was really bad. It took forever to get our food, we barely got any service at all through out the meal and we basically had to hunt the waiter down in order to get our check. The beautiful place and environment are a big plus, but the really bad service and the not so memorable food bring it down to 3.5 stars. edit: I changed it to 3 stars, I realized that besides the decor and the drinks, there wasnt much I enjoyed about this place that had to do with the establishment itself, the fact that I enjoyed my company is what made me give it 4 stars (or 3.5) at the beginning. read more

I came here with a good friend one day, and with a larger group the following weekend. Both times in the early afternoon on a weekend, and both times it wasn't crowded at all. The dishes are generously portioned and the special lunch for $16 is well worth it. I had the Rigatoni al Bruchio, the potato leek soup and the chocolate cake. Came here for a late Saturday night drink and dinner with friends. The places is small and intimate and I really like the vibe. The staff is extremely friendly and my party was seated right away. My friends had Italian beers while I enjoyed 2 glasses of Barbera. Their wine and beer list is pretty decent and not super overpriced like at many restaurants. For food, I had the chicken marsala like dish which had nice flavors and the portion size was perfect. My friends had the rigatone al brucio which also had nice flavors, but I could definitely tell the pasta was not fresh homemade pasta but from the box. We had a great time at Via Della Pace and Giovanni, the manager, made us feels at home right away. To open the appetite, we started with some negroni and a few appetizers (Beef Carpaccio and Parmigiana di Melanzane). The carpaccio was fresh and thinly sliced with a side of rucola and shaved parmigiano - it literally melted in your mouth. The second appetizer, Parmigiana di Melanzane), was rich and full of flavor and of course, it is hard to compete with a well-made eggplant parmigiana. For mains, we had rigatoni pirate (baked ziti with crumbled sausage), lobster ravioli and tagliatelle al ragù di mamma-nonna munda. All choices were fantastic, full of flavor and in my humble opinion, very authentic - I cannot wait to go next to try their other dishes. For dessert we had tiramisu which was very fluffy and creamy, just as it should be, and to end the night we had a glass of Limoncello. Go visit them and you will not regret it. read more

Really great find! I came here with a friend after getting scared off by several restaurants nearby with insane wait times (it was 7:30pm on a friday so our own fault). We wondered over to Via Della Pace and were seated within 5 minutes without reservations. The seating is really tight but the atmosphere makes up for it. Very authentic, warm, and celebratory atmosphere. Note that it is cash only. My friend and I both enjoyed a glass of wine (waiter was super helpful with selection) and the Gnocchi alla gorgonzola. The staff initially were confused and believed we wanted to share one serving of the pasta. When only one plate arrived and we had to wait for a second to be made, they were extremely gracious and gave us limoncello on the house. The gnocchi was delicious and the portion generous. Cozy little Italian place in East Village! We made a reservation for 5 and did not have to wait long for a table. The service was a bit slow (or maybe it's more laid back/chill and being a New Yorker, we're not used to it) but the staff was very nice. The food was great and delicious. The portions were generous so with appetizer and entree, some of us couldn't finish our food. The desserts were great. We ordered the Panna Cotta, Tiramisu and vanilla ice cream. Adorable cute place. Has a nice vibe to it. Definitely a nice place to take a date. Staff was nice. The place did feel a little bit cramped though (at least where i was sitting). Had Brunch here and it was delicious. The Eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked and went well with the Canadian Bacon. The Bruschetta with Parmesan and Prosciutto with Tomato was excellent. The tomatoes were especially good, real fresh. Pancakes were good as well. For a small plate, i left really full which is a plus. Came here with a large group of 10 for a friend's reunion. When you walk in, you definitely feel the charm and coziness of the place, but after a while, you start to feel like the restaurant stuffed a bit too many tables...feels cramped as there is little to no space between you and the person behind you at another table. We ordered some appetizers to share - the burrata was really good (comes with prosciutto and salad/tomatoes), and we also got some of their bruschette's. These were huge portions so would definitely be good to get a couple of different ones and share. The free bread that comes with the table is also good - warm/crispy! For my main, I shared two items. One of them was the fettuccine momma-nonna munda (tomato meat sauce with sausage and pork ribs). I thought this was pretty tasty, seems to be one of their signature items as it's specially boxed on the menu. Sauce was on the slightly sweeter side but I didn't mind it much. Unfortunately the meal all went downhill when the 2nd entree came; worst part was unfortunately the service. Our waitress was not very helpful when they seem to have gotten our order wrong. We ordered the tuna and when she asked how we wanted it cooked, we said medium rare. When the dish came, the tuna was completely white, bland, and inedible, AKA WELL DONE. We tell the waitress about it and she kind of shrugs it off and says the kitchen said that's how it was meant to be and walked away (kinda like "hey, it's not my problem"), even though we all looked very confused and frustrated. I then proceeded to walk up to the front to ask another waiter about it who obviously didn't seem like he had time to talk to me...so he waved me off and told me to talk to the manager. After talking to them, they still insisted that that was what was ordered, and apparently they had heard MEDIUM WELL instead of MEDIUM RARE. I told them it was inedible and not what we ordered and finally they made a new one for us. If you come here, definitely stick to the pastas! Cool that they have live music though! read more

This was our second visit. We arrived 5 minutes prior to the couple we were dining with and 8 minutes prior to our reservation time. The server we greeted us told us which table we would have once our entire party arrived. 5 minutes later we were told by the owner that we would have a table closer to the door. He was the owner and that was our table. After attempting to dispute I gave in and then he let let us have our table. He wasn't going to let a woman tell him how to run his business! My "grilled octopus " appetizer was boiled and nauseating. Although I left every piece of octopus on the plate no one asked me how my appetizer was. The service was very slow throughout. No one asking how our food was. They added an automatic 20% tip to a 4 person table which is ridiculous. Never again. Avoid this place. read more
