This is an East Village staple Italian restaurant. Come here for quality Italian food with great prices and service. Every dish I've had here is excellent but I especially love the gnocchi. You can't beat their wine prices! Enjoy a ounce of limoncello as a perfect ending to your meal. Everything is extremely affordable. For special treat dine outside, complete with prime people watching and the true East Village atmosphere. I definitely recommend outside dining for a fun date night. Get here early to avoid the wait. The food was ok but the service was horrific and put a damper on the whole night. We were seated for a birthday dinner that was booked in advance, and there were only 7 seats when we arrived rather than the booked 8. When we asked our waiter if we can please add a chair to the end of the table he said "he'll see if he can" and then disappeared. Already off putting but whatever. He angrily dragged over a chair and never set the 8th plate. Again annoying but we're there for a birthday (also in the reservation) so we're trying to have a good time and we push through. He was annoyed with us from the very start and anything we asked on the menu it was "no" or "I don't know". For example we asked for an espresso martini and asked if we can replace it with casamigos and he said they don't do that. Ok, fine. He didn't come up to us a single time after the food was ordered, we had to wave our hands to flag him down about 40 minutes in to ask for another drink, which again he found VERY annoying. He then made a mistake and got the birthday girl the wrong drink, and when she very nicely pointed it out he ROLLED HIS EYES AND SCOFFED. He even went as far as to argue that it was what she ordered (it wasn't. We were all there and heard her ask for something else.) At the end we asked to order dessert (again had to flag him down) and he said "ok what." And we nicely asked for dessert menus. He brought us two menus for the entire table and then disappeared again. We ended up leaving without dessert and had such a hard time finding him to ask for the check that we had to physically go up and ask someone to check us out. After which he reappeared to add his mandatory 18% tip that he did not deserve. Keep in mind this place is so small and he only was servicing like 3 tables. Half the time the other tables were also empty. So it's not like he was super swamped. My friend was really upset that she was treated so rudely on her birthday and we weren't even able to get her a birthday candle or dessert to sing her happy birthday because the guy was being so awful we decided to just leave instead. A group of 8, you didn't ask us if we want more drinks, more apps, or dessert? Not only did the restaurant lose money, but you lost tip money given that it's a percentage, and none of us will be back. Messy all around. The waiter had neck tattoos and a weird jacket on. Looked like he didn't even work there and he some angry guy they dragged in from the street or something. I came here today with my sister and close family friends. They always talk about this place and said this is their usual go to place when in the city. I loved it from the minute I seen it! Very cute brunch place! My friends and I got the eggs with Parma Prosciutto and eggs benedict, along with sangria for the table. I thought the set up with the flowers and on-the-house bread was lovely, and the dishes themselves were arranged nicely. Good deal on the sangria too ($15 for a bottle, so we each payed about $5). I think it's a great place for a date or morning with friends. I'd definitely consider coming here again sometime (perhaps in the evening this time) with my boyfriend. read more

Wow, what an amazing spot. For sure one of the best Italian restaurants in the area. Authentic Italian food with reasonable prices. It's a charming spot with friendly staff that makes you feel welcomed right away. They don't take reservations for smaller parties but if you come before 7 pm or after 9 pm you'll most likely get a table right away. The place is small and gets pretty crowded, but they have a nice bar if you have to wait for your table. The menu is fantastic! We started with the burrata with prosciutto di parma, excellent, creamy and a pretty big portion. The carpaccio tasted very good as well. Note the food comes out fast, very fast. Almost didn't have time to finish our appetizers before the main course arrived. Understandably, it's a small place with reasonable prices it's all about the turnaround. But would have liked at least a little more time between the dishes. Anyway, for the main course we had the carbonara and the fettucine momma nonna. Both absolutely delicious. We arrived on time for our reservation on a Saturday night, and were sat in the basement since the first floor seemed full. Although the basement wasn't as nice (think folding chairs and tablecloths covering up some piles in the corner), we didn't mind since we were there for the food. Understandably, it was a busy night and it took a while for the waitress to take our order, which is to be expected. But our order was served in piecemeal with long intervals of waiting in between (first the wine glasses, eventually the wine bottle, etc). My request for oil/vinegar for the bread was very rudely received (even though there was oil on everyone else's table) - I think the waitress assumed we were tourists which wasn't the case at all. The 3rd and final time the waitress came over was to tell us a large group was coming in and we had to relocate our table, to which we unanimously replied "NO". She blinked in disbelief and when we simply asked for the check she argued with us. We felt as though we were 2nd rate customers - barely had any attention from her and were treated rudely. The least they could've done was to offer us a coffee for the inconvenience of moving. Honestly, if the waitress were a bit nicer we wouldn't have had a problem with switching tables, but that was the final straw. I am personally embarrassed by this situation, as I'd been raving about VDP to my friends and was excited for them to bring them here. All my prior experiences here have been amazing so this was a huge disappointment. read more

We stopped in here on a Friday night after a show at the public theater and being quoted a two hour wait at a place across the street. We were warmly greeted and seated almost immediately. The space had a warm welcoming feel to it and that was echoed by the staff. The food came incredibly quickly. I might argue that it could have been paced better. The food itself was delicious. This is definitely a must go to restaurant. It was a regular Saturday in the city with my family. My boyfriends family suggested this place because they are regulars at this restaurant. I am soo happy I decided to go. The store front is gorgeous and the restaurant and small and cozy. The staff was extremely friendly and out going. The waiter was very patient with our party of 6 and our questions (he even took some pictures for us). We all ordered the lunch special which is $16.00 , you get one appetizer a pasta for the main dish and a choice of espresso for your lunch. It was big portions and fresh. I love that they cook the rigatoni al dente. The food was just amazing! I left there full and happy I decided to stay for our lunch outing rather than going somewhere back by me. As a vegetarian, there aren't a ton of options and the options they have are lacking in flavor. The gnocchi was good. A bit slow on the service side and hard to read the small menu font, but the food was so tasteful and very authentic. I'm a fan. Cozy, authentic, affordable. Stepped in for dinner with hubby and his brother during a rainy night. Greeted warmly by a bubbly, Italian speaking young lady and then blessed with three yummy antipasti starters shortly after. Id like to point out how most people working here are actual Italians, not the Long Island, Staten Island 'Italian'. That's something to think about if you're looking for the standard American pasta with red sauce and have a "ew whats carpaccio" attitude. We went big on the starters, ordering two bruschetta combinations (the Romana and Emiliana). The Romana came with tomatoes and basil --basic, wholesome and excellent with a litttttttle bit more salt. The Emiliana was salty, meaty and delicious. I mean...prosciutto and parmesan, come on. If that wasn't enough, we also went in on their eggplant parmesan (my first time trying this dish) and I really liked it. Earthy eggplant, cheesy, and that sauce was chunky and wonderful. The portions are satisfying but they don't ruin your appetite. As an entree, we ordered the Rigatoni de Pirata (sausage rigatoni with parmesan) and the Pollo alla Boscaiola (chicken breast in a mushroom sauce served with mashed potatoes and french green beans). The rigatoni was pretty good, it was the chicken that lacked a punch. Good -- not impressive -- but that's okay. $80 for three. I'd say that's decent considering we had 3 starters and 3 entrees. I would definitely return and it has now been added to my list of comfy food spots! read more

Even when I don't exactly enjoy the food, I always eat my fill. This was one of the rare instances that I left dinner hungry. The salad was terrible. Well, the spinach was spinach, and the hearts of palm were fine. However, the smoked mozzarella, well, I WISH it had been tasteless. The eggplant was repulsive: I put a large piece of it in my mouth, and immediately tried to chew and swallow as fast as possible to get it away from my tastebuds, as I was genuinely frightened that I was going to vomit. If I was a less civilized man, I would've spit it on the floor. For an entree, I ordered the Fettucini Mama Mumba (or some such nonsense): fettucini bolognese, with pork ribs and sausage. It was even labeled "signature dish." Doesn't that sound good? How could it be bad? The pasta had clumped together as if it was overcooked, sat out for some time, then was reheated and had the sauce dumped on top. The meat sauce tasted...old, frankly. Like old, unseasoned meat was dumped into a sauce that was watery and inferior to Prego. If that wasn't enough, I was saddened by the pork ribs and sausage. Seriously. I have never in my LIFE left sausage on a plate. Even when it's bad, it's edible. I took one bite, and was so turned off that I couldn't finish it. I was incredulous. I can buy sausage at the supermarket, let it sit past it's expiration date, cook it in a pan and it will still be thirty to forty times better than this sausage. I cannot even imagine what they did to make it so awful. My date said, "Know what's good about this meal?" "Nothing?" I responded. She paused, clearly having had another answer in mind. "Yeah, I guess that's right." If I was to admit that the meal was not a complete failure, I would say that the only redeeming qualities were: 1. The Umbra bruschetta, topped with pancetta and goat cheese. Pretty much impossible to screw up. 2. The busboy who kept my water refilled, as I was forced to drink incessantly to wash the taste of the food from my mouth. 3. I now have an even greater appreciation for the number of delicious Italian spots throughout the neighborhood. Perhaps this was some sort of perfect storm of an off night for Via Della Pace, and there is some explanation for all of this...but I will not be back to find out. read more

Thank God this is not the only restaurant in the city. If current management continues with such treatment to customers, they will lose major revenue. No one wants to be treated like a second class citizen. It is sad I have to write this review. I have been coming here since the 90's but it was mostly with Caucasian friends. But all my sour experiences here have been when I was with my African American friends and the first few times, I totally disregarded it but not this last time. Ok in a world of Italian restaurants - and c'mon lets face it - that is what NYC is - this place needs to get a game face on. So, i did not order pasta, spaghetti, an entree even - just an app and sangria. However I tasted lobster ravioli - a litte red brick should I call it. It's been 2 years since I studied abroad in Rome and I say that I still suffer from what can be medically termed as Roma-nostalgia. One of the friends I met abroad moved to NYC this past summer and it's been almost 2 years since we last saw each other. Via Della Pace was the PERFECT backdrop to our reunion. The ambiance is SO much more Roman style than a lot of the Italian places you'd find in NYC: tiny yet cozy, packed like sardines yet intimate. They even have Italian movies play on the TV over their bar area! The servers, as well, have that "La Dolce Vita" attitude I'd been craving since I left the Eternal City. Food wise, my friend and I each ordered pasta dishes: she went for the Rigatoni del Pirata while I went for the Gnocchi alla Gorgonzola. My friend's rigatoni, on first bite, seemed ordinary until you started chewing and your tongue meets that delicious sausage chunk hiding between the layers of melted cheese and sauce. The portion may look small, but trust me, it was enough to make my friend full after eating only half of it. The gnocchi though...OH MARONE! Decadent and savory, I couldn't get enough of it. The addition of the chopped walnuts and the perfectly cooked radicchio also made me hit a foodie euphoria! For dessert, we went for the Panna Cotta, which was also delicious. I especially loved the thick texture of it (though it was reminiscent of Spanish flan). At such reasonable prices, you really can't go wrong with VDP. Great food and great atmosphere. VDP is a great-food version of the stereotypical crowded italian bistro. Tables are tight but the food is great value, especially given the price. The waiters are on top of things and I don't remember ever asking for a refill on water. We had a 3-type bruschetta sampler, definitely some innovative combinations here. The bruschetta with shrimp and avocado was certainly notable, so if you're getting an appetizer, I recommend it. I had one of the special dishes, spaghetti with white wine sauce and seafood, all rolled up and cooked in tinfoil. They serve it right in the tinfoil on your plate. I can't say I've ever had this before, but I was really impressed with how well the flavor seeped into the pasta with this technique. Also, they have great wine specials, and we had a solid bottle of Syrah for $34. Total bill for 2 people with tip and wine was $105. Not too shabby. read more

Our group met here for dinner on a Saturday around 6. We had reservations but they wouldn't sit everyone until the whole party was there. While I understand, it would have been an easier way to get the wine flowing. The restaurant is small. Not necessarily cozy, at times it felt cramped. We were told to scoot our chairs in more so the waitstaff could walk back and forth to other tables. It took awhile to get bread and have our orders taken. The waiter was nice and friendly, but appeared to be busy even though there weren't many other seated tables. I ordered the gnocchi with asparagus and shrimp. It took a while for the food to come out, and I had to ask for more bread. The bread was a French baguette sliced and toasted and a Panini maker. It was good, but we were also very hungry. When the food came out, the portion sizes were typical, not too large. For $17, I expected a little bit more shrimp. They had cut up maybe 3 Shrimp for the whole dish. It had a stronger fish smell, and small pieces of chopped asparagus. The sauce was light and good, but the gnocchi didn't taste fresh. Everyone else thought the dishes were okay, but nothing was very memorable other than the company. After waiting for awhile and finding the waiter to request the bill, it came and was cash only. It is always convenient that these restaurants that do not take credit cards always have an ATM by the bathroom... Overall an okay restaurant, but I don't think I will be returning soon. read more
