We were looking forward to our visit to Via Volcán to get a caffeine fix after having lunch in the area, and we decided to stop by. Unfortunately, whoever the individual was on shift today was just a total piss poor person - she seemed to have an issue with our party, as she automatically assumed we just came there to 'squat' without ordering anything (if you have been to this place before, there isn't much seating and this isn't where you'd want to sit for a bit anyway); when I called her out and stated that I already knew our party's orders, she backtracked. She then continued to make a snide comment on the number of drinks we were ordering - what's with the passive aggressiveness? I didn't know that there was some rule that each person was required to order something. Like, are you okay? I just had a bad feeling about all of this, and we should have just walked out instead of giving our money to support this business - to add to it all, the coffees that we did receive (latte with soy milk, and the mocha) were just poorly made and not strong at all; they were both watered down and bitter at the same time... come on! UGH, the regret, but it was a choice. Shame on you, Via Volcán! You might want to heavily reconsider who you employ and train them better - this individual is really hurting your business! They were my first experience with a "micro roaster" on March 11, 2023. I met the owner on my first visit. I apologize I don't remember his name, but he did explain why his shop is special. They roast coffee beans that come from their farm in Panama. I remember being very impressed by how easy it was to converse with the gentleman about his passion for his business. Fast forward to September 19, 2024 and the Old Town Alexandria Coffee Trail. There was no way I was going to miss out on a cortado from Via Volcan if I were in the area; so I had to add them to the trail. They once again created a masterful cortado. On this day I spoke to a friendly young lady who brought out two different coffees for me to try along with my cortado; their medium roast Caturra and their Geisha. I very much enjoyed both coffees, but the Geisha stood out to me because of its floral aromas. The shop is small and probably cannot accommodate a large party, but you and a friend could easily enjoy a meetup while sipping on Via Volcan's delicious coffee. They are truly a single origin specialty coffee shop so if you enjoy the flavor of coffee I highly recommend this place. I also want to add their cortado is the cheapest in the area! This place is very simple: they offer you a damn good cup of coffee, nothing more, nothing less. This place is not large and does not have a food menu or much space to sit, so this is really somewhere to go when you are looking to stop and grab a coffee on your way from point A to point B. The drink menu is small, containing basics like pour over, cappuccino and latte. But what it lacks in frills it makes up for in quality. As other reviews have noted, they serve single origin coffee from their own farm in Panama and they allow the coffee underlying their espresso drinks to be the star. You can buy beans to take home, of course. There are two blends - 1) a high quality work horse medium roast that is used to make the majority of the cafe drinks, which are priced to similar drinks in the area, and 2) a premium light roast geisha that is only available in beans to take home or as pourover and is available at a higher price point. When I went, I wanted a cappuccino, which was made with the medium roast, and it was excellent. I have long lamented the shrinking ability of area coffee places to serve a real cappuccino, and here I received one that was not only proportioned correctly, but clearly displayed the quality and flavor of the underlying coffee blend. The flavor was balanced and gently sweet on its own, so I didn't have to add sugar. In fact, it's pretty rare that I finish the whole cup when I buy to-go coffees, but this one I drank to the bottom. Many chain coffee places scorch their beans and the coffee carries that burnt flavor - Starbucks and Compass come to mind - resulting in an unpleasantly detracting taste that this coffee blessedly lacked. As a result, it was smooth and extremely drinkable. It was definitely one of the best underlying coffee blends I have had in a while, made up into a correctly proportioned espresso drink, and I am now eager to go back and try the Geisha pourover. read more

Listen, if you're a real coffee snob and you're tired of seeing specialty lattes hog up the menus of coffee shops, you need to check out Via Volcan. You step inside and there's not a place to sit. There's only one table for the sugar/cream. It's neat and minimalistic, but not the place to go if you want to get work done or catch up with a friend. The menu? Pretty simple with a few options like pour over, drip, americano, cappuccino, and etc. There's no room for flavored lattes here and is truly a coffee snob's dream. The owner also owns his own coffee farm in Panama and he's been growing coffee beans for over 20 years. Currently, Via Volcan is selling two roasts - Panama Caturra (a medium roast) and Panama Geisha (a fruity & floral light roast). Geisha coffee is expensive and a luxury coffee, but worth a try if you want to treat yourself! For $7.75, you get a nice cup of 12 oz. Chemex pour over that is extremely fruity and bold, yet relatively low acidity. It's one of my favorite light roasts of all time. My friend and I both got a Geisha pour over and we both really enjoyed it. The pour over was extremely clean - definitely drink it when it cools down a bit to get more of the flavor profile. Also, it is a bit more diluted in the beginning, but you taste more of the notes as you get closer to the bottom of the cup. I like that you can get the Caturra as a pour over as well for a lower price. I'm definitely trying this the next time I come back. Ended up copping an 8 oz. bag of Geisha coffee for $24. It's expensive, but at least there will be something to look forward to when I wake up in the morning. read more

They brew black coffee, cappuccino, espresso, americano and iced coffee. They have a few sugar and milk options but ask the owner for what you want before he goes in the back to brew it. I had a $4.25 cappuccino with half and half, sugar and cinnamon and it was perfect. There's a small table to lean on as you wait for your coffee. On it is hand sanitizer to help keep you safe. In the back are two kinds of beans to buy including geisha coffee, one of the world's most coveted coffee. If you love coffee, run to this place. It's among the best in the D.C. area. read more

I was recently in old town Alexandria, leaving an appointment and was looking to try a new coffee shop when I stumbled upon Via Volcan. I immediately hopped on Yelp and saw that they had amazing reviews so I figured I would give them a try! Like many people have said, there isn't a lot of room in there to sit down or work, but I was optimistic of the coffee would be amazing as all the other reviewers had said. Immediately when I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly barista who talked through the menu with me and helped me decide what was the best option for me. I truly appreciated how kind she was and that she took the time to discuss the menu with me and tell me a little bit more about VV and what types of coffees that they brew. Although I wound up getting something similar to what I always do (a vanilla, oat milk, latte), she made me really excited to come back and try a drink that I believe has both coffee and either sparkling or tonic water in it? Overall, I had an incredible experience visiting VV on a weekday morning and I look forward to coming back and trying some more of their coffees. We found out that they have Geisha coffee, so my wife and I came here twice to try it. What is Geisha coffee (aka Gesha coffee)? Its origin date back to the 1930s. It was found to be growing in the mountainous southwestern town of Geisha, Ethiopia. It's from there that it made its way to Panama. Compared to other coffee beans, it has a more diverse and flavorful profile, which makes it desirable. Panama geisha coffee beans are comparatively expensive because they require very specific cultivation conditions and are extremely demanding to both grow and harvest. The first time we visited, the store was closing early because the owner needed to leave. So, we got a caturra coffee, which was one of their brewed coffees. It was a medium roast with a medium body and acidity. It had notes of chocolate and citrus with some bitterness. Milk and sugar helped tame the bitterness. This goes on our list of least favorite. On the second visit, we had time to look around the shop. There are 2 floors to the shop. The 2nd floor has plenty of seating and a bathroom for customers to use. We ordered a cup of Geisha coffee. It comes as a pour-over only, so that takes time to make. It was mild, sweet, and light-bodied with no bitterness. It had citrus and honey melon notes. A great tasting coffee! Is it worth $64.00 for one pound of beans? That's for you to decide. I added a touch of sugar to counter the citrus. That made it just right for me. We were helped by a friendly and polite woman. She was knowledgeable and answered all questions with a cheerful smile. You gotta love that, even if you're grumpy! The dining areas and bathroom were clean. The ambiance was relaxed and decorated with warm tones and simple homestyle furniture. They sell fresh ground and whole bean coffee, hot coffee drinks, hot chocolate, and cold coffee drinks. They have 3 types of syrups available: vanilla, caramel, and cane sugar. Everything is posted in my photo of their menu. This shop opened in December 2020. They harvest and roast coffee beans from their family coffee farm located on the highland slopes of Volcán Barú which is in the Chiriqui Province of Panama. The name of this store comes from a road (Via Volcán) in Panama that leads to the family farm. This is a family owned business that sells only single origin coffees that they make from start to finish. That is something that few coffee shops can claim. So nice to find this local little coffee house. Via Volcan serves coffee from beans grown on their family farm in Panama and roasted in house. They feature medium and light roasts that can be prepared or purchased by the bag. I ordered a latte with oat milk and it was so smooth! The location on west street is right across from the UPS store so my hope is that there will be lots of traffic to keep this place thriving far into the future. I attended a talk at our local library by the owner of Via Volcan where we tasted the coffee. Having experienced coffee in many places around the world I thought I knew something but learned a lot from the lecture and the coffee was excellent. They also have something called Geisha which is quite expensive, but I do plan on tasting it soon. Only complaint is that they open late and only use disposable cups. If I pay $8 for a cup of coffee (that's the Geisha) I want it in a ceramic or china cup. I would love to sit and enjoy a first cup at the cafe but for now I'm brewing it at home. read more
