so i love their food and the vibe of their shops but a month ago I ordered 2 sandwiches via carry-out from the Montgomery St location -- after which I drove to my friends house with both which we were going to have for lunch and the order was TOTALLY WRONG. I should have checked but i didn't. The lady who brought my sandwich from the back also had 5 other orders/bags. Clearly, this is sloppy work. I couldn't even eat one of the sandwiches b/c it wasn't on GF bread. But here's the rub -- I called a couple hours later to talk to someone about this and no one called me back. We're long-time customers (15 years and counting) of St. Elmo's. The coffee drinks are our favorite, as are many of their baked goods. The challenge we have recently encountered may very well change our patronage. On a recent day with very little available outdoor space, our family was hoping to sit at an outside table. Unfortunately there was a woman sitting and chain smoking at one of the tables, next to the table we were hoping to sit at. We inquired inside about St. Elmo's rules for smoking on the patio and expressed our disappointment that this was happening. Several other patrons expressed disappointment over this as well. We received nothing but the Gen Z stare, with no real response and absolutely no action taken. For reference to management, this took place on July 20 around 4 pm. The young staff seemed much more interested in goofing off with each other than serving customers. At one point there were bizarre moaning sounds coming from the back. Customers were confused and uncomfortable. I hope St. Elmo's posts signs stating the patio is non-smoking and councils the appropriate staff. This is a family-central cafe. 99% of customers don't want to suffer from second-hand smoke in order to get a latte. There are places nearby where this won't be an issue. read more

I'm surprised the rating is as low as it is for this lovely cafe. I used to come to this very same cafe over 20 years, right out of college and making zero money and trying to survive. I loved the community vibe and the cozy atmosphere. I'm back to DC, over 20 years later. It feels different than what I remember but maybe my memory isn't as good! But I still enjoyed it. I came back recently with my partner and kids around the holidays. I loved that they had a gingerbread making activity. My kids were sort of into it, but honestly I was pretty much the person most into it! We sat on the couch and it was so relaxing to have my coffee and cocktail all at once (cocktails were special for the night). We also ordered food. I got the 4 cheese grilled cheese, tomato soup, meatball sandwich and chocolate chip cookies. The meatball sandwich was out of this world. Definitely would get this again. The grilled cheese and tomato soup were just okay. The coffee was great as were the other drinks. Service was perfectly fine and they were okay with us taking extra time to wrap up after they closed. I ordered a cold brew nitro that means cold brew that is fortified with nitrogen gas. I was served something that looked like it had some kind of dissolved gas in it with ice cubes. I can accept a cold brew with ice cubes, but not a cold brew nitro please train your staff, not to put ice cubes in cold brew nitro. Ice cubes melt it takes away from the culinary experience of the nitro not that the nitro was actually strong to begin with. The coffee flavor was nice and mild as it was explained to me. read more

I stopped in after my dental appointment to treat myself ... unfortunately this was a let down. When I arrived around 9:45am it was pretty busy with most tables occupied but plenty of chairs at the bar. There only one person in the line ahead of me ordering but I had plenty of time to peruse and make some choices. There was a wide variety of wine, pastries, an all day breakfast and lunch menu, patio and indoor seating so honestly it felt like something for everyone. After some discussion with the cashier, I learned the lavender homemade syrup was out and the strawberry wasn't recommended for coffee beverages (bummer). I settled for a blackberry iced latte half sweet and ordered the bacon and Brie croissant. The latte came out pretty quick but didn't have enough ice and honestly just tasted like an oat latte. The bacon and Brie took a little while like almost 10 minutes and they packed it to go ... no big deal except once I unwrapped it the croissant was slightly too toasted and the bacon was well burnt and the Brie may have been too because it was hard to bite into . I was disappointed in my choice and selecting this as my treat to myself. I can't say I would come back here if I was in the area but perhaps others will give it a try because it was pretty busy. read more

yay for small business coffee shops! Up until recently, I've only ordered iced coffee, but the last trip I had about 2 hours to kill so I got a coffee and a breakfast sandwich (followed by a lunch sandwich for later) I had a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel. The bagel had a nice texture and the sandwich was good. For a later lunch to go, I got the Oxford, which is like a caprese sandwich. It was plenty filling. They have a lot of good sandwiches so I'd like to go back and try others. read more

St.Elmo's is my favorite coffee shop in the area. They consistently provide great coffee and good food for a fair price. Today I tried the special breakfast burrito ($6.99) and the Alexandria burrito ($7.99). Both were fantastic and came out piping hot. The ingredients were very fresh and good quality. This shop is fairly busy but I'm never waiting long for coffee/food. There's also plenty of seating (indoor and outdoor). I got a little nervous when I saw them making my drink because they used a powder mix for the mocha. But it didn't have a powdery taste even though they don't use a sauce or syrup and was surprisingly delicious! Many people bike or walk here and bring their dogs. I was honestly disappointed in the lack of care. This spot has so much potential in the area they're located. I stopped by on a Friday afternoon to enjoy the warm weather outdoors and the tables outside had a visible layer of pollen. They hadn't been wiped down in a while! I noticed that a lot of cyclists, dog owners, neighbors were passing by and they do have a lot of outdoor seating. I ordered an espresso martini because I thought that the freshly brewed espresso and the bar with so many options would result in a delicious espresso martini but I was so disappointed. The espresso martini was pretty pricey and tasted like left over coffee. I will say that they have a variety of options to choose from from cbd drinks to beer but it was a huge miss for me sadly. read more

I think they were more than a little harried or strained on the Saturday when my husband took me here for a carry away breakfast. The cashiers were taking orders quickly and the baristas were pulling shots at a good clip, but orders were still falling through the cracks at times. Our two deeeeeliiiicious sandwiches and vegan Morning Glory muffin came out individually and some minutes apart while we waited at a distance with other patrons around the cafe's edges. I had to ask for my small, black coffee after more minutes when the simple drip never appeared. I've been a barista, so I know how rush hours can be. The food was scrumptious and the black coffee, once it cooled, was smooth. My breakfast croissant sandwich was lush with egg, cheese, and turkey sausage and not too greasy. I could have opted for a bagel or English breakfast binder and different or no meat. The sandwich of the day was perfect for my husband's buffalo chicken fancy. While I didn't give it a swirl to mix, the mocha wasn't too sweet to start, but I think they syrup settled as I took a while to drink it. One thing that was particularly nice was how rich the drink was. Cheese danish was also great. It's a big space with plenty of comfortable indoor seating and, more important, plenty of outlets for your computer needs. I enjoyed ending my workday here - it's certainly more spacious than most Starbucks. The staff was friendly as well. I also appreciated that they had boxes out to collect food for a local charity. Alas, I was not wowed by the offerings. I ordered a peppermint mocha that was wholly too light on both the peppermint and the chocolate. It honestly tasted more like a latte than a true sweet treat. I also ordered the turkey chili. Although it looked fantastic, the flavor just wasn't there. I've come here about four times now and it's just a great neighborhood coffee / baked goods coffee place. I recall coming here when they had live music playing in the evening pre-covid and it was just a pleasant experience. The first time I came here I was working from my laptop and listening to the live music play. The second time I came here was after a doggy playdate that was held near Potomac yards. My friends brought their dogs and we were able to sit on the patio. The beauty of this place is that they have dog bowls that you can fill with water for your pets. The third time, I rode a bike here from Shirlington to meet a friend for coffee. We ate outside and just started talking about life and covid and what it's been like and our plans for the future. I recall drinking a cafe Americano and having an apple cider donut which is so delicious. The fourth time I came here, my friend and I biked from her home explored Old Town for an hour and a half I needed a great stop to energize. This time, I think I just had a coffee and a banana which was so good after biking all that time. We use the capital share bikes and there is a station right across the street from here. So, it's perfect for anyone that doesn't have a bike and would want to rent a bike to this place and get their workout in especially during good weather. I highly recommend this local coffee shop for just grabbing something quick, enjoying the outdoor seating area and if you have dogs that's a plus because they can sit with you which is amazing. read more
