The perfect place for a gumbo craving!! I love their gumbo, it's truly the best and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. SO many hearty dishes, all done so well - I'd recommend the catfish, slow roasted pig, the house salad (perfect dressing + the corn makes it so delicious), and the potatoes are the perfect amount of cheesy and garlicy. We were lucky to have crawfish etouffee a recent evening, and I loved being able to compare that with the gumbo - two distinct flavors, both done perfectly, with a combo feast of sides and dishes to complement! I'll definitely be adding it to my takeout from here. FYI the parking lot is tiny, but there's tons of street parking closeby. I would not recommend parking in the Haymaker lot, but perhaps someone can confirm The only thing that I think could use some improvement is their dining-in service - it's a slightly confusing mix of vague wait times when calling in, counter service for drinks while waiting to be seated at a table, counter service for ordering main courses, and slight table service when you can grab someone as they come by. It's in my collection for a while and finally got a chance to try it out. We were first asked to go inside at the counter and the staff would introduce us the menu, containing proteins and carbs and you can choose whichever combination you want, we also had a side to share. The blackened fish was really delish, but what surprised me was that I was totally obsessed with their salad! It came with all sorts of veggies that were fresh and crispy, and some beans, the sauce integrated the textures so well that you'll not feel bored just eating the salad itself. The slow cooked pork was a little bit tangy and it's really good. The side was quite Cajun style. I like it overall! The outdoor environment was also nice! This review is drafted off the basis of a visit when the place was in soft opening mode but I'm giving this place some great props and deeming it seriously promising off the strength of the delicious Gumbo, which was the best I've had outside Louisiana and one of the best things I ate on my most recent week long sojourn in Austin. There weren't many menu items to choose from but I'm sure glad they had that on offer. Cocktails were strong and reasonably priced as well, nice very Austin interior was pleasant though the places positioning in the strip mall location makes it hard to see from the street. I hope this doesn't present problems for the place because I would really like to have access to that gumbo in the future when down in Austin as well as sample the rest of the kitchens offerings once it gets open for real. read more

Holy wow. This place is fantastic. What a hidden gem; literally, since there's no large outward facing sign and it's in the back behind dai due. I'll just start w/ the staff - ridiculously friendly and they treat you like friends/family. Also crazy helpful - basically just tell them what you like and have them pick out everything for you. Now onto the food. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations. From the photos alone, I thought this was the kind of place that prioritized their drinks and decor over the food. Man I was wrong in all the right ways. The food is fantastic. A great modern play on creole and in a way that doesn't make you feel like you need to pass out afterwards. Everything we got was fantastic. Most definitely get their gumbo and the potato hash. I also can't say enough about their house salad. I am NOT a salad kind of guy but man, it was crazy good. Can't wait to go back and try new things. Their menu is very small but that doesn't matter. I'll happily have the same things again. You definitely definitely need to try this place out. I can't believe my good fortune in finding this place. I've never reviewed it because I don't write Yelp reviews, but I just had to write something negative about another business in another city and needed to balance my karma so I chose my favorite place I've discovered in the past year. Without a question that's Vic and Al's. They are a treasure and I feel so fortunate that I live so close to them. The first night I wandered in I took so long staring at the drink menu that the bartender finally asked if I wanted him to pick something and make it delicious. He knocked it clear out of the park - who knew that carrot juice and mezcal were made for each other? The gumbo is perfection. Everything I've ever tried here has been perfection. Warning: Review from a Louisiana boy. I had a wonderful experience here. Food is packed with flavor and is delicious. I had the couchon de lait po boy, gumbo, red beans & rice and boudin. I would eat them all over and over and over again. Gumbo is thick, has a dark roux, is very meaty and just the right amount of spice. It has a nice Texas twist to it with smoked mushrooms that really elevate the dish. Red beans& rice also had a slight twist that really works well. Boudin is packed with flavor and not gamey or greasy as some others. The couchon de lait was rich and tender with so much flavor, I could not make it better with anything else. Bread was soft. I really enjoyed their food, but their drinks is what really caught my attention. Lucky to get to review this place as a first-time diner-to-go. I came upon Vic & Al's by reference of Michelle C and Keri B. Also, they get an extra star just to start for rescuing me from an unfortunate series of events for a prepared full-course birthday dinner with another provider. While it wasn't totally a "4th-and-99" situation, being able to use them as a last minute refuge helped when the other plans fell apart. They are definitely open for take out and outside dining and will do curbside upon request. It's unclear if they are open for inside dining at this time. I chose to do take-out with pickup at the door. Entrees and sides here are very limited and primarily seafood-centric with a Cajun bent, so I'd advise checking the online menu before going. Luckily, this was just what I happened to be looking for. I went for the blacked catfish and my co-diner went with the crawfish etouffee. One of the things that struck me was that how they managed to pull off "plating" in a rectangular, plastic box. Presentation is part of the savoring experience, and I have to say that, not only did the meals survive the 15+ mile trip to Pflugerville intact, they were a delight to behold. The food itself was very tasty. We both went without sides since the entrees themselves contained rice, and my host prepared appetizers and dessert. I have to say the blackened catfish was delicious. It's easy to say that about anything blacked usually, but I have had a blackened disaster or two in my lifetime, so I know the difference. Google will drive you here, but they're kind of tucked away on the side of the building with no discernable signage. If you see Haymakers and the large parking lot next to it, Vic and Al's face that lot. Parking in the back was tight because it's shared space with Dai Due next door, but parking in the front was far more open since those businesses were closed for the day and evening. Based on the total experience, I'd be happy to be back here for to-go anytime or dine-in when conditions are safer. read more

This place was a pleasant surprise. Didn't like the parking area because it was pretty small and rocky but we came here for brunch on a weekday so it wasn't busy. Very friendly service and the inside was really cute. My friend ordered the breakfast hash which she enjoyed and I ordered the blackened catfish po'boy with a side of beet salad. I loved my po'boy! It's a bit confusing when you first walk in but they quickly greet you and make your experience personal. It usually looks packed but the wait is always minimal. Ordered takeout a few weeks ago for birthday a few weeks back. The breakdown for stars is as follows: + atmosphere and responsiveness for phone order + half of the food was delicious (jambalaya, fish, and gumbo) - beignets were the toughest and beyond chewiest I've ever eaten - red beans didn't have great flavor - teeny tiny parking lot -biggest negative was that I ordered two drinks to-go. The parking lot was full so I couldn't go through the order to double check. I thought it was in pouches like pics on here showed just stuffed in the bag. Nope. No drinks. I called and they promptly refunded the drinks + tax. However, I'm still out $4 tip (20% on whole order) on two drinks never received.
