    went to try another cajon spot as I wanted to get some jambalaya.. well, at least more cajon before I leave end up ordering pretty much the same thing here, catfish courtbouillon. another catfish... i was thinking, it come with rice and there is shrimp and there is roux, might as well get the catfish and lets have a showdown... well, it wasn't even close... price wise, it is +6 ... i might have end up tipping more here as i was too lazy to change the options down. end up doing 18% tip... so it was total 34. actually more expensive here with less... less portions, no free sides, and i didnt order a beer... anyways, the food was pretty good. it has more of tomato based roux taste... not the same. the shrimp was the highlight. it was bigger and perhaps cook and seasoned separately. service was kinda weird. you order upfront and they take the food to you... should i even tip? kinda confusing...i got a cup and pour water for myself initially. then the waiter came and refill it. nevertheless, the waiter was very polite when answering my questions about the menu initially. can't give this place more than 3 stars food wise, it didn't come with free side and the portion of the fish was smaller and price was higher... triple no no ....perhaps it was a different class restaurant... don't seem like it. maybe just different real estate... if this was a 5 star dining in the westin hotel or something, then I can understand the rip off.. but I think both are same class... anyways, food is good. slight edge with the shrimp but roux per my preference, I give it to the other place. i think the portion of the fish just shocked me, as i had the same dish 2 days ago at another spot... that affected my experience here. i would say, this is most likely a college hangout, the other place would not have the same crowd.. here, you can probably see sigma chi or the tri delts come in and have a party at the bar... probably a comparison of huntington beach vs long beach... thus the difference... just a matter of location...

    Man oh man where do I begin...? Of allll the times I've eaten out, I've NEVER EVER been greeted at the door AND given a tour of the restaurant simultaneously! It seemed like Ms Dani was there waiting on me! She showed me around and set my expectations on how and what to order. My best friend and I joined in on HH here and couldn't decide so we ordered one of each app on the HH menu. The gumbo was realllly good! Not a lot of okra (which being a southerner I can appreciate), the red beans and rice were delightful. The boudin balls were fried to perfection . The bean patties had a delicious sauce it came with. Everything was great but the service was even BETTER! Top notch! We will definitely be back and I highly recommend!! 20/10! Thank you Ms Dani, for EVERYTHING! You were wonderful and an absolute pleasure to work with this evening.

    My husband and I went to Dai Due for our anniversary and were a little disappointed at the lack of cocktails so we decided to check out Vic and Als for a little post dinner drink! The vibe is easy going and friendly and I love how they make most of their mixers/bitters/etc! It was fun looking at all the different labels and both bartenders were happy to talk about the various items. I had fun explaining to my husband that the big jar of cochineal on the counter were dried bugs lol!! Apparently they use it to dye their aperol- cool! I also was curious about the Szechuan amaro I saw and the bartender let me try just a teensy bit of it with the warning that it will make your tongue go numb (which it totally did! XD). The drinks were great, I got an espresso martini which was served in an adorable little jar and was super tasty, not syrupy sweet and I loved the (homemade) pecan bitters. I would love to go back and try out more of their drinks! All in all a very fun bar and great bartenders who seem to love what they do.

    My cousin loves this place so he said we had to stop in while we were visiting. It's a cute country-esque place. Looks upscale with the chandeliers and decor. We ordered off their happy hour menu - which honestly, you get a good amount of food for a rly cheap price. We ordered the $4 gumbo (a little spicy but super filling), the red beans and rice, red bean fritters (pretty good!) blackened catfish and beignets. Their purple drink cocktail was super refreshing too!

    Vic & Al's delivers on what a true Cajun scratch kitchen should be. Everything is made in-house, and the daily changing menu keeps it fresh and worth revisiting. We went during happy hour (3-6pm) for half-priced appetizers and drinks, a great deal. The boudin balls were flavorful and perfectly crisp. I had the Fancy Fish (swordfish over mashed sweet potatoes with broccolini), which had deep, balanced flavors. My husband's Cajun Caesar was just as good, with moist, well-seasoned chicken. Beautiful décor, friendly staff, and food that speaks for itself. We'll be back.

    Vic & Al's is in my top 3 favorite restaurants in Austin. I cannot recommend this place enough especially after their renovation cause ever since then, I feel that eating there is an even better experience. Adorned with very kitschy and atmsopheric interior decor (my favorite are the inexplicable chairs on the walls), the restaurant is a great vibe. They also got their seating process down to a science. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted and given your table number. Before going to your table, you can get an amazing craft cocktail at the bar. I am a huge fan of the sabine pass which is their cucumber cocktail and it is perfection. Then you order your food at the register and their rotating menu is something to behold. For this specific trip, we got the crawfish jambalaya, blackened catfish on rice, and the interesting eggplant parmesean. All were hits, not a single miss. This place knows how to do seasoning as any bite you take, you're hit with an explosive array of herbs and spices that give you the kick you need to keep biting and savor every taste. So lucky to live down the street from here and one of my absolute favorite dinner spots in the city.

    I was in the neighborhood and then realized that we were within a half mile of good ol' Vic and Al's. It was a nice day so I grabbed my brother and we walked over for some lunch. The gumbo was as amazing as ever. Just perfect. And their beet salad was a refreshing side dish. This was my first time here during the daylight. And while I prefer the evening experience, the food and service was just as good. The music is different every time we visit but always good. Today's tracks had a 60's hippie vibe but without the usual cliche artists and songs we've all heard before. We enjoyed that. I took a photo of our food and sent it to my wife and said, "Guess where we are?" She recognized their famous gumbo and knew immediately :-)

    I had a great time trying Vic & Al's! Food was SEASONED and all the food we bought was equally as good as the other. I got the breakfast hash topped with an egg and bits of sausage, potatoes, bell peppers, corn and a sauce that was full of flavor. The others at the table got the blackened fish and chicken on beignets. Each enjoying them! We had a table of 6 and the service was excellent too. Staff recommended one tab and was able to split at the end which was great. Space is cozy too! Lots of seasonings on the walls and gave dining hall vibes with the picnic type tables. Highly recommend this place. It definitely gives cozy brunch vibes. I encourage you to grab an entree and a side or an extra entree to share.

    The aesthetic is great and as soon as you walk in it smells amazing, which immediately gets you excited for the food. You start a tab when you enter and order at the counter, which is easy and pretty smooth. I got the lunch combo plus the chicken and beignets. For the lunch combo, I chose the half po boy and gumbo. Both were flavorful and seasoned really well. Not too salty, not bland, just solid and comforting. The gumbo especially felt well balanced and satisfying for a lunch portion. The chicken and beignets were pretty great overall. The beignets were definitely the highlight and easily the best part of that dish. Soft, fluffy, and really enjoyable. The chicken was fine but not as memorable. There might have been a bit too much sauce, which made both the chicken and the beignets a little soggy at times. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, which added to the experience.

    We did not see an option to make a reservation and just showed up around 1 pm on a Saturday for brunch. The food was absolutely amazing. Our group ordered the red beans and rice, collard greens Benedict, sweet potato chorizo hash, salad, and gumbo. Every dish was incredibly tasty, fresh, and well prepared. No misses at all, and it is the kind of food you keep talking about after you leave. A few things to note about the experience. We were asked to put a card down immediately, which felt a little uncomfortable, especially for a group of six, and you get assigned a table, but there's no table service. Ordering is also a bit confusing since you have to go to two separate areas for food and drinks. We were not given an itemized receipt, which made splitting the bill pretty difficult. The atmosphere was super cute, cozy and inviting, and the decor was beautiful. There's seating in the front and back, though if you sit in the front you'll hear more of the noise from people coming/going, cars on the street, and some bursts of cold air. Parking is also something to be aware of. Do not park in the nearby lots unless they are clearly marked for Vic & Al's, as towing seems common (we saw people standing outside on the corner asking if "our cars got towed like theirs"). There is free street parking on some of the surrounding roads. We parked on Walnut Street and walked about 5-10 minutes. Overall, the food alone makes this place worth visiting, but the ordering, payment process, and parking situation could definitely be clearer.

    I came to Vic and Al's for a late lunch, and at first glance the menu didn't seem to offer many vegetarian options besides piecing together a few sides. Luckily, my sister discovered that you can customize a vegetarian po'boy, and hers looked amazing--I wish I had known that was an option beforehand! Since I didn't, I ended up sharing sides with my dad, and doing it family-style turned out to be a great idea. We ordered the oyster mushroom salad, bean fritters, and the beet and goat cheese salad. My sister also got a side of beans and rice. The fritters were the standout--three per serving and surprisingly substantial, with great flavor. I enjoyed almost everything except the oyster mushroom salad; the dressing was a bit too heavy and drenched the whole dish. Service was solid as well. We were sitting on the patio where the sun was blasting directly at us, but someone quickly came out to lower the blinds, which made a huge difference and was much appreciated. Overall, a tasty spot--especially if you're willing to get creative with the vegetarian options or share a spread of sides.

    Vic & Al's is consistently delicious! This is my second time in since their expansion and I always love the experience. My fiancé and I had a friend in town visiting and we immediately took him here. He loved it! We ordered a poboy, mushrooms on salad, ribs (new item on the menu - SO GOOD!), beans, and gumbo. We also ordered a half order of the beignets. Everything was absolutely incredible. We found a parking spot in the free lot out back, but in the past, we have parked in the neighborhood since the lot fills up quick. Highly recommend to all who live in or visit Austin!

A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.

I had to remember to save room for dessert because the cheesecake here is amazing! I had the chocolate and cranberry cheesecake, which is worth every bite. The service is also excellent. They know they're closing but that did not stop them from taking care of our group like we were family. Our group enjoyed every bit of the experience. I hope to make it back again. This place has too many good memories and we will miss every bit of it. Get some merch!

We then ordered the deviled eggs and shishito peppers, and the red fish and short ribs for entree. A lady brought us the drinks, and the deviled eggs. Our server swung by and then disappeared. We thought the shishito peppers were on their way. We waited for what seemed like a really long time and still no shishito peppers. We also noticed that each table had a carafe of water except ours. We were just given water once, and then our server never bothered to fill the water up. Anyway, we kept waiting since there was no sign of the server. At this point, we felt he might have forgotten the second appetizer and we just did not want it, but he was nowhere to be found. A man (not our server) brought out our entrees. We then told him that we had been waiting for our second appetizer and would just want to cancel it. We asked if we could get the biscuits instead. He brought out the biscuits within a few minutes. Now this is where it really annoyed us. Had our server just come over and said he had forgotten our shishito peppers, it would have been okay. Human. What he tried was act smart and dropped by saying the shishito peppers would be out to which we said that we didn't want an appetizer after an entree and had cancelled it. I almost felt like he was treating us as if he thought we don't really dine out or whatever and he could just make fools of us. This really didn't sit right with me. We asked him for water and he filled it up left. The food was above average. The short ribs were good but my red fish had been hammered! The biscuits were good. The deviled eggs were good as well. Anyway, we finished our meal, and got the check, paid, and were waiting to finish our drinks. The receipt was on our table. Also, note, it was not a particularly busy day with several empty tables. What our server did next was absolutely unacceptable. I think he wanted to see if we had tipped him after his awful service. We did, but not 20% as we always do because of the soddy job he did, not to mention his attitude. We paid 15% which I think was more than what he deserved now. Out of nowhere, and mind you,after being absent for long periods before, he just came by, grabbed the paid up bill from our table to our shock, while we were still sitting and talking, looked at the bill, turned towards us, and muttered something angry under his breath and walked away. I have never seen this level of entitlement and bad behavior. We left right away. We had been really looking forward to this meal but I would not want to go back. The food was good, but not great, and I would not want to put up with such obnoxious behavior as a paying customer.

The sauce was extremely rich, making it difficult to enjoy or finish the meal. That said, the restaurant itself is adorable, and our waiter was fantastic. The service and atmosphere were both great. While this breakfast wasn't a hit for me, I'll still return and stick with favorites like the fried green tomatoes and taquito salad, which were excellent during my previous visit.
