I havent been here in more than a year and they extended their restaurant and there is so much more space! We got some drinks and they were so fresh and unique. We got the fried chicken and it was good as i remembered it, jambalaya was okay, and the eggplant salad was nothing special. They hired a close up magician to walk around the restaurant and he was impressive!!
Amazing food. Amazing service. Cajun and spicy. They expanded and still the greatest Cajun food.
Vic & Al's isn't your traditional cajun restaurant. It gives more of a trendy, Austin vibe which may not be for everyone. The setup is a little different than a traditional restaurant. There are two sides--one focused on drinks and the other on food. It's not really full-service dining, as you don't order from your table. Instead, you order at the counter and they'll bring everything out to you. For my partner and I, we shared a Fried Shrimp Po Boy, the Shrimp & Grits, the Gumbo, and ended with Fried Bread Pudding. Like many reviews have stated, the dishes were definitely a bit more salty compared to the traditional Cajun flavors I know and love. Just because there's more salt does NOT mean more flavor! SERVICE: The true highlight of our experience was how friendly, welcoming and helpful everyone was. The place is also super dog-friendly, and the kind of place that's easy to hang out and relax for a bit.
My husband and I went to Dai Due for our anniversary and were a little disappointed at the lack of cocktails so we decided to check out Vic and Als for a little post dinner drink! The vibe is easy going and friendly and I love how they make most of their mixers/bitters/etc! It was fun looking at all the different labels and both bartenders were happy to talk about the various items. I had fun explaining to my husband that the big jar of cochineal on the counter were dried bugs lol!! Apparently they use it to dye their aperol- cool! I also was curious about the Szechuan amaro I saw and the bartender let me try just a teensy bit of it with the warning that it will make your tongue go numb (which it totally did! XD). The drinks were great, I got an espresso martini which was served in an adorable little jar and was super tasty, not syrupy sweet and I loved the (homemade) pecan bitters. I would love to go back and try out more of their drinks! All in all a very fun bar and great bartenders who seem to love what they do.
Man oh man where do I begin...? Of allll the times I've eaten out, I've NEVER EVER been greeted at the door AND given a tour of the restaurant simultaneously! It seemed like Ms Dani was there waiting on me! She showed me around and set my expectations on how and what to order. My best friend and I joined in on HH here and couldn't decide so we ordered one of each app on the HH menu. The gumbo was realllly good! Not a lot of okra (which being a southerner I can appreciate), the red beans and rice were delightful. The boudin balls were fried to perfection . The bean patties had a delicious sauce it came with. Everything was great but the service was even BETTER! Top notch! We will definitely be back and I highly recommend!! 20/10! Thank you Ms Dani, for EVERYTHING! You were wonderful and an absolute pleasure to work with this evening.
Fancy fish: swordfish. Wow how flavorful it is. The swordfish is perfectly cooked. Cochon de lait po boy: pork po boy. It's fresh.
My cousin loves this place so he said we had to stop in while we were visiting. It's a cute country-esque place. Looks upscale with the chandeliers and decor. We ordered off their happy hour menu - which honestly, you get a good amount of food for a rly cheap price. We ordered the $4 gumbo (a little spicy but super filling), the red beans and rice, red bean fritters (pretty good!) blackened catfish and beignets. Their purple drink cocktail was super refreshing too!
Vic & Al's delivers on what a true Cajun scratch kitchen should be. Everything is made in-house, and the daily changing menu keeps it fresh and worth revisiting. We went during happy hour (3-6pm) for half-priced appetizers and drinks, a great deal. The boudin balls were flavorful and perfectly crisp. I had the Fancy Fish (swordfish over mashed sweet potatoes with broccolini), which had deep, balanced flavors. My husband's Cajun Caesar was just as good, with moist, well-seasoned chicken. Beautiful décor, friendly staff, and food that speaks for itself. We'll be back.
Vic & Al's is in my top 3 favorite restaurants in Austin. I cannot recommend this place enough especially after their renovation cause ever since then, I feel that eating there is an even better experience. Adorned with very kitschy and atmsopheric interior decor (my favorite are the inexplicable chairs on the walls), the restaurant is a great vibe. They also got their seating process down to a science. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted and given your table number. Before going to your table, you can get an amazing craft cocktail at the bar. I am a huge fan of the sabine pass which is their cucumber cocktail and it is perfection. Then you order your food at the register and their rotating menu is something to behold. For this specific trip, we got the crawfish jambalaya, blackened catfish on rice, and the interesting eggplant parmesean. All were hits, not a single miss. This place knows how to do seasoning as any bite you take, you're hit with an explosive array of herbs and spices that give you the kick you need to keep biting and savor every taste. So lucky to live down the street from here and one of my absolute favorite dinner spots in the city.
I was in the neighborhood and then realized that we were within a half mile of good ol' Vic and Al's. It was a nice day so I grabbed my brother and we walked over for some lunch. The gumbo was as amazing as ever. Just perfect. And their beet salad was a refreshing side dish. This was my first time here during the daylight. And while I prefer the evening experience, the food and service was just as good. The music is different every time we visit but always good. Today's tracks had a 60's hippie vibe but without the usual cliche artists and songs we've all heard before. We enjoyed that. I took a photo of our food and sent it to my wife and said, "Guess where we are?" She recognized their famous gumbo and knew immediately :-)
I came to Vic and Al's for a late lunch, and at first glance the menu didn't seem to offer many vegetarian options besides piecing together a few sides. Luckily, my sister discovered that you can customize a vegetarian po'boy, and hers looked amazing--I wish I had known that was an option beforehand! Since I didn't, I ended up sharing sides with my dad, and doing it family-style turned out to be a great idea. We ordered the oyster mushroom salad, bean fritters, and the beet and goat cheese salad. My sister also got a side of beans and rice. The fritters were the standout--three per serving and surprisingly substantial, with great flavor. I enjoyed almost everything except the oyster mushroom salad; the dressing was a bit too heavy and drenched the whole dish. Service was solid as well. We were sitting on the patio where the sun was blasting directly at us, but someone quickly came out to lower the blinds, which made a huge difference and was much appreciated. Overall, a tasty spot--especially if you're willing to get creative with the vegetarian options or share a spread of sides.
went to try another cajon spot as I wanted to get some jambalaya.. well, at least more cajon before I leave end up ordering pretty much the same thing here, catfish courtbouillon. another catfish... i was thinking, it come with rice and there is shrimp and there is roux, might as well get the catfish and lets have a showdown... well, it wasn't even close... price wise, it is +6 ... i might have end up tipping more here as i was too lazy to change the options down. end up doing 18% tip... so it was total 34. actually more expensive here with less... less portions, no free sides, and i didnt order a beer... anyways, the food was pretty good. it has more of tomato based roux taste... not the same. the shrimp was the highlight. it was bigger and perhaps cook and seasoned separately. service was kinda weird. you order upfront and they take the food to you... should i even tip? kinda confusing...i got a cup and pour water for myself initially. then the waiter came and refill it. nevertheless, the waiter was very polite when answering my questions about the menu initially. can't give this place more than 3 stars food wise, it didn't come with free side and the portion of the fish was smaller and price was higher... triple no no ....perhaps it was a different class restaurant... don't seem like it. maybe just different real estate... if this was a 5 star dining in the westin hotel or something, then I can understand the rip off.. but I think both are same class... anyways, food is good. slight edge with the shrimp but roux per my preference, I give it to the other place. i think the portion of the fish just shocked me, as i had the same dish 2 days ago at another spot... that affected my experience here. i would say, this is most likely a college hangout, the other place would not have the same crowd.. here, you can probably see sigma chi or the tri delts come in and have a party at the bar... probably a comparison of huntington beach vs long beach... thus the difference... just a matter of location...
The aesthetic is great and as soon as you walk in it smells amazing, which immediately gets you excited for the food. You start a tab when you enter and order at the counter, which is easy and pretty smooth. I got the lunch combo plus the chicken and beignets. For the lunch combo, I chose the half po boy and gumbo. Both were flavorful and seasoned really well. Not too salty, not bland, just solid and comforting. The gumbo especially felt well balanced and satisfying for a lunch portion. The chicken and beignets were pretty great overall. The beignets were definitely the highlight and easily the best part of that dish. Soft, fluffy, and really enjoyable. The chicken was fine but not as memorable. There might have been a bit too much sauce, which made both the chicken and the beignets a little soggy at times. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, which added to the experience.

Really really wanted to like this place after reading the 5 star ratings, but it missed the mark for me. As a Southeast TX native, I'm always on the hunt for some Cajun food in Austin to taste like home. I was confused on what this restaurant wants to be. The prices, interior decor, and over garnished dishes suggests a desire to be a more upscale restaurant. However, the odd ordering set-up, the paper dishes, self-serve water, and complete inattention from waitstaff felt almost like a food truck experience. I think I just wasn't sure what to expect. For the food, I got the blackened catfish on a bed of rice. My boyfriend tried the chicken thighs with rice as well (although he had ordered it on a poboy) - he loved the dish. For me, I felt that the sauce completely overpowered the dish. I could hardly taste the fish on its own merit. Whenever I did get a bite of just rice and black-eyes peas, it was bland without the sauce. A pretty meh dish that didn't feel very Cajun inspired besides the catfish. For the boudin, the flavor was nice, but it was unlike any boudin I've ever had. I'm used to seeing the rice and meat inside, but this was all blended up. Again, the sauce was overpowering. Overall, I can understand why many people are happy to try this place, and it definitely does offer something unique to Austin! Just maybe wasn't for me. read more

Stumbled upon this place across street after being told it was an hour wait for food at Patrizi's. Bang! What a hidden gem! Each dish we ordered surpassed expectations and there was absolutely no wait for 2 on a busy Thursday night. We ordered the beet salad and gumbo as starters. Both were delish and will be picked again in the future. For mains, we got the Blackened Catfish and Cochon de Lait, both over greens. I like how they let you customize your base (bread, rice, or salad) so you can go low carb and healthier if you wanted to. The Cochon dish goes into my pantheon of all-time best things I ever ate. Sooo good, I'd go back for that dish alone. The portion sizes were also huge and my gf and I had to get 2 to-go boxes. Two appetizers and one entree would have been sufficient for the two of us. We weren't in the mood to drink that day but the drink menu also looked appetizing and extremely reasonable in price (7-10 dollars per cocktail). Where can you even find this in Austin anymore? I debated whether to even write this review to keep one of Austin's best secrets under wraps. read more
Stumbled on to this place a few months ago and boy howdy am I glad that I did! First off, the ambience is incredible. One of the warmest, and elegantest places I've been to in a while. To date, I've been 3-4 times, and each time has only gotten better and better. They use fresh, seasonal ingredients so their menu is always changing. You'd think this would result in high prices but I think they are lower than you'd expect. Staff is incredible and they make delicious, creative cocktail. Great date spot. read more
this place gave off really cozy and homey vibes! when you walk in there's a giant wall of spices which was pretty cool to see! there were also a bunch of pretty chandeliers hanging over the tables. they have a pretty limited menu so we were able to try a good chunk of the menu. everything we tried was yummy and had lots of great flavors! my fav would have to be the soft fried potatoes. they were soft, crispy, and buttery! there was indoor and outdoor seating but we decided to sit inside since it was literally 100° out. the restaurant was dog-friendly so milo was chilling underneath the table. they were also really sweet and brought out a water bowl for him. what we got: - cochon de lait (slow roasted pork) po'boy sandwich - blackened catfish over sassafras rice - fried chicken thighs over sassafras rice - soft fried potatoes - gumbo read more
We stopped by here last week for a couple drinks! It's a pretty small place tucked away with minimal parking. We got a couple seats at the bar (fits about 8 people) and had a very friendly bartender! The hurricane was my favorite. We also tried the orange drink which I found a bit too spicy lol. The vibes and decor inside are pretty cool. You walk in and immediately know this place is going to exceed all expectations! The staff was so friendly, Ben walked up and greeted us made sure we understood the ordering process and made some recommendations. We ordered and started our tab then went and met Rob at the Bar. BEST COCKTAIL IVE EVER HAD! No exaggeration, it was perfect for me. Then the food came after I thought the place could not get better. Food for perfectly seasoned, had amazing flavor and you could taste the love and care that went into every dish. We are only here the weekend, but we may go back to try the other dishes! Vic and Al's was amazing! Austin has lacked some quality Cajun spots so glad we have some more spots to fill in the gap. Enjoyed the system or ordering drinks and food at the front and grabbing a table. Casual, yet very nice and aesthetically pleasing inside. The food came out very quickly and service from the employees was very attentive. The chicken thighs over sassafras rice maybe some of the best fried chicken I've ever had and I've never said that living in austin. Boneless and fried to perfect, seasoned perfectly with all the Cajun goodness we need. We also dove into the shrimp poboy and gumbo, enjoyed both very much. Can't wait to come back! read more

This place has my entire heart. Everything about this place is phenomenal -- the service, interior, and THE FLAVOR in each dish. Just wow. I don't think any place in Austin has left me so impressed in a while. I will be raving about this place to all my friends!!!! I'm not a huge sucker for Cajun food but the catfish, rice, salad, pork, and gumbo were all seasoned so beautifully that my boyfriend and I had cleaned the plates in a matter of like 10 minutes. Their gumbo was one of the best I've ever had, even after many visits to Louisiana. Definitely get their sweet tea too! It has the perfect hint of lemon and is so refreshing (even if it's a bit pricey). Will be coming back very soon to try more dishes! Such a hidden gem read more
Such a lovely little Cajun restaurant! The wait is long on a Friday night, but you grab a drink from the indoor bar and sit at the makeshift outdoor bar as you wait. It's a great setup - we definitely enjoyed it. The farm-to-table concept is visible and we could taste the freshness in our food. The decor is also super cute - in addition to the beautiful bar, overall decor is a farmhouse with chandeliers in it. Super cute! The drinks are absolutely delicious! We shared some beets and they were awesome. The fried red bean patties were delicious - everything on the plate was pretty good. The rice and purée and bean salad were flavorful. The tilapia plate was identical and the fish was cooked well. However, we did feel like everything was just TOO salty. The jambalaya in particular was absolutely too salty that it was inedible. What a shame! Instead of letting the flavors of the ingredients shine, they were smothered with salt. read more
Great Cajun scratch Kitchen tucked behind a series of restaurants close to I-35. Small and super cute interior with a contrast of French provencial chandeliers, picnic benches and spice jar wall with interesting ceilings. Service at first counter was great. Friendly and starts the tab. Next stop bar - you're in good hands here. Very knowledgeable to help decide just which elixir will be best. They add to your tab and keep it open. Food- The boudin balls were very tasty. I normally like them spicier but the freshness of the batter and spicy sauce worked well. They were out of the blackened catfish on the greens so subbed crawfish on greens which was a chopped delicious salad! Husband had gumbo and would've preferred it to be spicier but again it was so fresh. His old-fashioned was tiny but strong and my Orange Drink which was agave tequila with spice infused ginger, carrot and orange juice was soooooo good. Had to have another one. The first once was spicier which i oreferred but overall great food experience. Seemed like a younger crowd than I us and had some limited outdoor seating. I can't wait to bring my bestie here. Love this place. Love is put into every dish. Came with my pupper cause I promised her a dog park party. One of the owners greeted me and I asked him a question about their sassafras rice, he gave me the recipe! Even the tea has herbs in it. Per usual, a wonderful dining experience with knowledgeable and welcoming staff and a consistently good menu. New items included the daily special: a boudin breakfast sandwich. I'm not particularly a fan of boudin but I especially enjoyed it in a sandwich packed with flavor! I also tried the bread pudding which caught me by surprise when it came out in three round deep fried dough balls? Personally, I would've preferred a classic bread pudding but the twist was nice and offered more crunch / a better texture profile. I'll be back read more

This is a gem tucked away on Manor in South Austin. Follow the sign on the back of the golf cart to this amazing place. When you walk in you are greeted with shelves filled with jars of all kinds. It reminded me of a western show walking into a general store. But that is where the likeness ends. The menu is simple. Pick your protein, pick your side. They have a good bar and ample seating both inside and out. We went for lunch. I had the blackened catfish on a house salad. It was perfect. The fish was flaky, the seasoning had enough kick to let you know it was there without dominating everything. If you like Kombucha definitely get the Seasonal Scrub. I'm definitely adding this to my list of must come back to places. read more
This was our last meal in Austin! What an amazing treat we had!!! A little hard to find at night for visitors to Austin, but it's so worth it! We figured it out and had the most amazing experience! We loved the Devore, we were greeted by an amazing host, Greer, and he was so kind and helpful. You walk up and order, the bar is to the left and you walk up and order. You sit either inside or out, we sat inside and enjoyed an amazing dinner. I had the beet salad and it was incredible but I LOVE beets! For my entrée I had the blackened catfish as a sandwich. I like that all entrees you get a choice on how it's served, sandwich, over rice or as a salad. My party had all 3 options. The bread was a big roll and I wanted the bread even though I don't eat much bread but I just ate the insides and it was yummy! I tried the chicken thighs too and wow what flavor! The rice option was also amazing and I loved that it had black eye peas in it along with the spices and sauce. Incredible. We also had a side of red beans and rice which was a little spicy but good. Came here on a Sundays morning and we were the first and only customer there. This place was somewhat hidden as it is behind dai due and Lolas donut. There was plenty of parking in the parking lot out back so that was a plus. The menu was pretty limited and you order up front. Since we were the only ones there, we got to seat ourselves. I got the blackened catfish on collard greens with a boudin and old fashioned. The old fashioned with the house made corn syrup was quite good. The catfish was delicious as were the boudin. There wasn't much service as the server just brought out our food and we get the water ourselves. I would've given this place 5 stars if they had a no tipping policy like other self serve restaurants. Overall the food was good and decently priced. Vic & Al's is a hidden gem in Austin. Tucked away in the back, it isn't the easiest to find but add to its charm. Although I was expecting a wait when I went, my friend and I did not have to wait at all. Immediately entering we were greeted by very welcoming staff who walked us through everything since it was our first time here. For food I got the blackened catfish which was delicious and tender. On the side I got the corn dog, which was not my favorite. The outside breading of the corn dog was soft, whereas I prefer a crunch on the exterior. I will likely not be getting the corn dog again. For my drink, I got the hurricane which was quick made right in front of me and was fantastic. The ordering process was not like the usual restaurant experience. They keep an open tab and track everything you order - and I was extremely impressed when it came time to split the tab. They had kept perfect track of exactly what we had each ordered making it super easy. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Vic & Al's -'d I can't wait to come back with more friends! read more
Wow. This was delicious. My husband ordered the pulled pork. It was flavorful with lots of meat. The bread was crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside. Great portion. The red beans and rice were outstanding. They honestly could have been a small meal by themselves. I ordered the day's special: pork ribs. They vanished. I could taste rosemary and a hint of sweetness in the bbq sauce. Sooo good. The outdoor seating is comfortable and inviting. Perfect for spring weather! Glad to have this spot to add to my go-to's! Woahhhh this place is great! Not only does the ambiance drag you down to Louisiana, but the smell hits you right as you enter. The walls are covered in exotic, yet local ingredients almost like a visual appetizer. If you don't have a mask, the kind hostess will have one for you. Ordering takes place at the counter for both food and drinks. If you're too early for their daily dinner special, you choose 1 of 4 entrees to either be over rice, in a Po'boy, or over a salad. We went with the blackened catfish and roasted pork. Both proteins were fantastic. The bed of rice was served dirty with black eyed peas and left you feeling satiated. The green onion, parsley, and pickled onion garnishes helped to cut through the savory flavors of the meats. I could probably bathe in whatever that Cajun mayo sauce is that they use to top everything. The sides are fine. The potatoes and beets weren't bad, but didn't excite as much as the boudin! Oh man. You must get the boudin. The chicken liver gives it a wonderful texture and umami flavor. It's fried perfectly to have a crunchy outside with smooth inside. Combined with that spicy sauce... yeah I'll take a double. It's smoother in texture than what you might expect but it's my favorite thing on the menu. Don't forget your drinks! The bartenders are experts in their craft. I've been on an Aperol craze lately and asked the bartender for a "paper plane". He had never made one before, but instantly went to work crafting a fantastic one! I then asked for their favorite drink and received the Roffignac. The ingredients change based on the season, but this was a wonderfully refreshing and herbaceous drink that I think everyone should try. This Cajun-Southern fusion restaurant on the east side of Austin is an amazing gem. The food is always cooked to perfection and is full of flavor. The fried chicken thigh is so crispy and delicious. Ordering it on a bed of salad greens is my favorite go-to but, anything on their menu is amazing. You can't go wrong with the fried boudin either. Order yourself an entree and split some sides with friends, as you'll want a taste of everything. Additionally, the staff is super friendly and helpful every time I have been here. The bartenders all describe the drinks well and make sure you get something that you like. They also have a great happy hour deal on cocktails. The atmosphere is dramatic and cool, with eclectic paintings hanging in the bathroom and fine drapery inside the restaurant. I highly recommend Vic and Al's if you haven't tried it yet. 10/10 will return! read more

I tried their catfish over rice and the flavors were amazing. I also liked their idea of a rotating menu as I've never seen something like that done before. We went during their brunch hour, and they were so kind to alter a dish if requested. Great hospitality and service here, and they even had a shelf of games we could play. Lots of outdoor seating and the ambiance makes for the perfect daytime brunch/lunch spot if you want some well seasoned soul food! read more

Small counter service limited menu creole influenced spot. Service is very friendly. Gumbo is tasty but not traditional. Nice chunks of chicken but no seafood amd the color is not quite dark or thin enough. The rice is a standout as it is nutty and great texture but the bowl comes already mixed with rice instead of the soup poured over a ball of steamed rice so the customer can adjust the rice as they see fit . And then there is the bowl...gumbo just cannot be eaten in a paper bowl with a regular spoon (appreciated the real spoon tho). The feel of the metal spoon scraping the paper bowl is like biting down on a wood popsicle stick! Not good. The beet salad was fresh and tangy with dollops of creamy goat cheese. Fix the disposable bowls and expand the menu a tad and tbis place could be great. read more

Y'all. COME ON. It doesn't get any better than this place in Austin. It's really fine food at affordable prices and the people who work there are always welcoming. I can't recommend this spot enough. The perfect place for a gumbo craving!! I love their gumbo, it's truly the best and makes my mouth water just thinking about it. SO many hearty dishes, all done so well - I'd recommend the catfish, slow roasted pig, the house salad (perfect dressing + the corn makes it so delicious), and the potatoes are the perfect amount of cheesy and garlicy. We were lucky to have crawfish etouffee a recent evening, and I loved being able to compare that with the gumbo - two distinct flavors, both done perfectly, with a combo feast of sides and dishes to complement! I'll definitely be adding it to my takeout from here. FYI the parking lot is tiny, but there's tons of street parking closeby. I would not recommend parking in the Haymaker lot, but perhaps someone can confirm The only thing that I think could use some improvement is their dining-in service - it's a slightly confusing mix of vague wait times when calling in, counter service for drinks while waiting to be seated at a table, counter service for ordering main courses, and slight table service when you can grab someone as they come by. Not bad in that it would ruin the experience, just a tad confusing and could use a few pointers from staff. Thank you team, for making this a great dinner experience any day of the week! read more

No. We've never had a problem getting a table! With the recent expansion there is plenty of seating available!
What time(s) do they offer beignets? When I was there they were out.
