    Thai Chili Naan

We ventured out to Durham tonight to try out another Indian restaurant, Viceroy. We were a little let down by the last Indian restaurant we tried in Durham, so we were curious to see how this would go. Spoiler alert: there was no let down here. The decor inside was fun - colorful, patterned wallpaper with black & white pictures and mirrors, all inside gold frames. The vibes were fun. Service was great as well - our server was lovely and had wonderful suggestions. Food came out in a fast-paced but timely manner. We started with the Gobi Sukka - After my first bite of a large fried cauliflower piece, I thought it could use a little more seasoning (salt) and spice. But once I got more bites with the peppers & curry leaves, the flavors built up. The coating and fry on the cauliflower was superbly crunchy. For the main course, we split the Lamb Peri Peri Boti (medium level spice) and the Chicken Vindaloo (spicy level soice), which a side of thai chili naan. The lamb was my favorite bite of the night - incredibly tender, salted just on the edge of being over salted but not (which is perfection to me), and incredible spice profile. The chicken vindaloo was tangy and perfectly spicy, with the spice lingering on the back end. Lastly, the naan was crispy, buttery, and slightly spicy - the perfect vessel for sopping up all the delicious sauces from our meat courses. We're very glad that we found an Indian restaurant in Durham that we love. We will certainly be back.

This restaurant has some of the best food I have ever tasted!! I rave about the lamb chop lollipops to any and everyone that will listen. The service is immaculate!! 10/10!

This is absolutely some of the best Indian food in durham. Everything from the drinks to the appetizers and entree was delicious. Highly recommend the cauliflower as well as the tamarind drinks- they are truly unique in flavor but so delicious! Will definitely be back

Amazing food! I still can't stop thinking about it. Everything from the food, to service was amazing! Staff are so attentive. Make sure you make reservations in advance. I absolutely loved the decor and it can also be a very cute and cozy date place. We ordered garlic naan, turmeric mango lassi , paneer plate and so much more! I will definitely be back to checkout other things on their menu!

Viceroy is an absolute gem for Indian cuisine in Durham! There's a lot of competition for the best Indian restaurant in this city, but for me, Viceroy wins time and time again hands down. The decor is simple but effective, imagine a British-style pub with plenty of wooden accents but with an Indian flair. The space is comfy and approachable without doing too much. What I also enjoy about Viceroy is the service. Quick and efficient, you never have to wait too long for your meal. Plus the servers are all extremely friendly and make you feel right at home. Now on to the food! When I say that Viceroy has some of the BEST Indian food I have EVER enjoyed, it's not an understatement. I'm originally from NYC and have been spoiled by amazing Indian food, and Viceroy can hold their own with any NYC restaurant. Everything is DELICIOUS but the standouts for me are: The Naan, both the plain and garlic varieties, are incredibly tasty, soft, and fluffy The Mykanwala curry is so rich and flavorful in a well-spiced, creamy tomato and onion sauce- I always get mine medium spicy with chicken! The Curried Shepherds Pie is the kind of dish you don't expect to find on an Indian menu that delivers a delicious punch of flavor. It's what you would expect from a shepherd's pie but with the unexpected twist of Indian flavors and spices- a must try! The Smoked Daal Bukhara is also another standout curry dish with lucious smoked black lentils in a flavorful sauce that you can choose your favorite protein to accompany. This dish has a very unique taste that is sure to please Besides the amazing food dishes, the cocktails here should also not be missed! My favorite drink on the menu is the Kali Mirch, an amazing concoction of black pepper infused vodka, fresh strawberry syrup garnished with a lemon salt rim- SO GOOD. And lastly, if the warm butter toffee cake is on the menu just get it. Honestly, there are few words to describe how amazing this cake is, the perfect amount of sweetness and served warm.

This is the kind of place where you'd want reservations on the busier nights, but I managed to grab bar seating. The vibe was modern, and the menu offered options that were recognizable, yet distinctive. Notably, ordering some dumplings served in Indo-Chinese style with tangy sauce and fried noodles was a good way to pass the time until my entree arrived, and I was pleased to have gotten a ginger-based non-alcoholic beverage. The main course was a lentil curry which looked a lot like the butter-based Dal Makhani one often finds but was in fact stewed in coconut and was vegan as well as having a rich mix of smoky, spicy flavors. I will say that it was a noisy place and the bathroom was a bit of a mess, but the food is most of what I rate and it lived up to expectations.

In a landscape full of good Indian food, Viceroy steps up to the challenge of elevating a meal to a truly exceptional experience. Everything from the elegant decor to knowledgeable servers added to the experience before the food even came to the table; and when it did, I was pleasantly surprised by both familiar and new flavors, all exceptional. I especially enjoyed the vegetarian kofta with fig - and those who know me would know that a vegetarian item hardly ever receives such high praise from my carnivorous palate. I would absolutely come back just to have that single curry again. It's not just curries either - their small plates and tandoor items all go above and beyond, demonstrating the true breadth of their culinary capabilities. This is a must try for anyone looking for an Indian spot that goes above and beyond.

The vibe here is trendy but still comfy as a pub. The food arrived quickly and full of flavor. There wasn't a single miss from drinks to appetizers to main course!

Viceroy is one of the Durham restaurants I will come back to without fail whenever I visit after living in the area for four years! Highly recommend a reservation in advance - the place is always packed and for good reason: top quality Indian food with the unique colonial era influence reflected in both the menu choices and interior design. After multiple visits across the years, my family's favorites are the palak chaat, hariyali chicken, smoked daal, and garlic naan. Don't miss out on this one while in Durham!! Pro tip: park in the lot behind the restaurant!

Even though I don't eat hot food, the presentation was wonderful. We were treated well. We were the minority in the restaurant and we didn't feel that not once.

Does this restaurant have outdoor seating?

When I was there last time (two months ago), they had like three seating spaces outdoor-- may have changed bc weather!

What dishes are Vegan on your menu?

They have several vegan dishes--I haven't exhausted them all, and I've been three times. They're marked on the menu. The cauliflower, the fruit pooris, some curries, etc are all fantastic.

The wine list is broad and thoughtfully curated, with options that feel approachable whether you're a casual wine drinker or someone looking to try something new. The sommeliers were welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping us find something we loved. The space itself is adorable, with eclectic décor and cozy lighting that makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile. It's a great spot for conversation and a relaxed evening with friends. The only downside is that the space is fairly small, and I would have loved to see one or two more lower seating options for small groups rather than mostly high tops. That board was so good--I can't stop thinking about it. The toasted baguette slices with truffle salami and mustard? Unreal. It was the perfect little snack to share. We also had the citrus lavender crème brûlée, which was surprisingly delicious. I don't usually go for crème brûlée, but this one was light, not overly sweet, and just had a really nice flavor. I've also tried their shepherd's pie before and loved it--wish it was still on the menu! The vibe inside is moody and cozy, and they've got a cute outdoor patio too. Overall, such a great spot.
