Viceroy is a DIAMOND of a restaurant - if you have not tried Viceroy yet, you are missing out!!! It is not even a competition - Viceroy is the best Indian restaurant I have ever been to. I traveled to Durham from Massachusetts with 5 friends. We had heard Viceroy was incredible - but they still somehow surpassed all expectations we had! Viceroy is such a popular spot, that our party of 6 was unable to get a reservation in time. Despite not having a reservation, the owner B.J. welcomed us with warmth and hospitality, kindly making every accommodation he possibly could for us. B.J. came to serve us drinks while we waited on the sidewalk and brought extra chairs for us to sit while we waited. Within 15 minutes, B.J. seated us at a high top table inside... even bringing us complimentary pani puri! The food was top tier authentic Indian food - from the lamb lollipops as an appetizer, to the entrees of murg mykanwala, chicken korma, and anjeer kofta. The craft cocktails were equally phenomenal - the tamarind daquiri and spicy papi are must tries! But, you really cannot go wrong with anything that you order from Viceroy. Everyone in our party of 6 was blown away by Viceroy. We all cannot wait to return to Viceroy soon, and already started discussing plans to travel back from Massachusetts (...trust me, it's worth it!) We bring people here from out of town. It's an elevated place with a very cute interior. Seating can sometimes be tricky, and we opted for bar stool seating which was enough room for two of us. My friend chose this restaurant for his birthday dinner, we had a party of four. I was the only "first timer" of the group. I loved the decor/atmosphere the second I walked in the door. The host and server were both pleasant, engaging and attentive. I scoped out the menu prior to coming and as silly as it sounds I was so excited to try the garlic naan as I had very limited knowledge of the cuisine. I was a bit concerned about how spicy everything might. I had the red Thai seafood curry. It was supposed to be mild but it had some kick to it. The shrimp and mahi were good though. I also was able to have taste of the sausage roll which was decent, and also sampled the mykamwala paneer. My friends did share that the spice levels are not always consistent and I found this statement true bc the paneer was supposed to be spicy and my mild sauce was much more intense. As anticipated, I loved the garlic naan. I have to give a shout out for the sign about human trafficking in the bathroom(in both English and Spanish), sadly these are real issues that need attention in my opinion! This place is one of our staples. Pub style Indian food with lots of flavors and spice. The cocktail menu is innovative and fresh. My favorite dish is the Momo Bhel, I've never had anything like it. The staff from the host stand, server, and nice gentleman that opened the door as we left, were all genuinely invested in our experience. This place takes reservations and has a huge parking lot behind it which makes it a great place to have dinner before viewing a show at DPAC. The prices are great and the food is fantastic. The portions might be a little small for some of us more portly Americans, but it's the right size of portion for a normal eater. Perfect size if you ask me, just enough to make you full without having to deal with leftovers. But if you're used to $15 Indian cuisine that is of lower quality but double the portion so you can take some home, then you might want to go somewhere else. I wanted something with curry so I ordered the lamb mykanwala. It was perfect and full of flavor. Girlfriend ordered the lamb korma. Hers tasted great as well, I'm glad we got two different meals because they were so different yet similar. The heat scale is pretty accurate, medium is plenty hot and might be a bit hot for some folks. I also had the Thai chili naan and it was some of the best naan I've had anywhere...you must try it! To top it off I had a spicy papi drink...it was kind of small for $14 but had a lot of alcohol and was definitely spicy. Viceroy is a great gem on main Street in Durham. This is a do not miss as the atmosphere and food are absolutely amazing. My friend and I popped in on a Friday evening and it was packed. There was room at the bar so we decided to sit there. It was a great spot as we got to chat with the bartender, see all the drinks go out, and received attentive service. We were not super hungry so I decided to get the garlic Naan with the chutney sauces and my friend got the chickpea salad. Both were amazing! The Naan had tons of flavor and a nice hint of smokiness. The chickpea salad had a combo of flavors that were salty, savory, and sweet. I love that it had a lot of onions and it was super satisfying. I would've eaten all of it by myself, but I tried my best to remember I was sharing. I would come back for one of their curries, which are reasonably priced and smelled heavenly! I dined with my boss while in town for work and absolutely loved everything about the experience. The restaurant's vibe is chic and trendy while being upscale with a comfortable, casual feel. We ordered the cauliflower appetizer (I don't remember the name, but you'll know when you see it/the staff will know if you ask for it) and it couldn't have been better. I'm a vegan so you don't have to take my word for it when I say that it had a "meaty" texture, but it was certainly far better than what you'd typically expect from a cauliflower based dish (my boss also said it was meaty and he's an omnivore). I had the Chana masala with a medium spice level for my main course, and it was perfection. The basmati rice it was served with was perfectly cooked and fluffy and paired perfectly with the dish. Oh, they have a great selections of wines as well. I went with an orange wine that was described as a bit funky. It was fabulous and paired very well with the food. Was craving something spicy and opted for the lamb korma that came in a spicy creamy sauce. It came with a nice serving of basmati rice but I opted to get the garlic naan on top of that. The korma itself was quite spicy and super flavorful which I loved. The garlic naan was a must get and added to the flavor because of all the garlic that's actually on it! The lamb itself was super tender and broke off my fork really easily. The only thing I had a negative experience was that I was seated at the bar near the kitchen so literally every 5 seconds, someone would yell "corner!" so the other staff knew they were coming around. We made a quick trip from Raleigh to try Viceroy on a summer Saturday night, and the experience was on the money. The quirky pub-style ambience wasn't what I was expecting for a primarily Indian restaurant, but I dug it. Great crowd full of smiling faces and people enjoying each other's company. I showed up for my 830 reservation only to learn it was actually an 8pm reservation, and I got it wrong. They worked with me and took us to a table graciously, I guess we lucked out We grabbed drinks and a few small plates to start. Gotta get at least one naan with both chutneys. Papaya salad was fresh and bright. Egg rolls were a touch expensive for what they were, but tasty nonetheless. I grabbed the lamb Kashmiri and my wife grabbed the chicken corma (I think). Both were fantastic, and were served as generous portions that were enough for leftovers. Service was great throughout, our waiter was happy to walk us through the options or help us make a decision. Being a bit of an Indian cuisine snob, I had low expectations, i.e. the usual american indian dishes with tinned sauces- flavored but lacking the aromatic complexity of fresh ground, fried, or roasted spices. But... the two dishes I had were well beyond that. A chickpea Chaat 'appetizer' with pungent onion, tomatoes, cilantro and other spices was a winner-- I wish I could reproduce this at home. The roasted eggplant entree, ground and chopped, but not as fine as, say, a baba ganoush, was excellent. It was spooned adjacent to and over some excellent rice. More food than I needed, yet no traces of eggplant were left behind. Spices set at medium to high (once assured that 'high' was an allegedly Delhi 'high' (which can mean 'bring personal fire extinguisher). A good meal, with a clean lager. Prices? They charge $20 if the reservation is missed/cancelled. The chicken Hariyali was my favorite. It was fall-off-the bone and very tender. The waitress was very friendly. The price is a bit steep, about $40 per person. They automatically charge gratuity if you are a group of 5 or more. The ambiance is dark and mysterious. The Viceroy is a fine place for some delicious curries. The curries are definitely way more overpriced compared to many curry places in town. But the flavors are just soooo delicious. Every curry that I've tried, I've loved. Overall, they are a bit salty but whatever curry mix they put in each dish is magical and I will take the higher salt content for it. The garlic naan, although a bit thin and oily, are still tasty. And I am madly in love with their mango lassi. Whenever we try a non-curry item, like this Gobi Sukka, we are never left impressed. Not that it was bad, but that it want particularly good and I wouldn't order it again. Overall, come for the curries and mango lassi.
