What a fabulous place to get to, that is still open and that is willing to feed you with smiles to complement great food after a show. My beloved & myself rolled in at the witching hour, when most people want to get the heck out of dodge, after being on their feet for a shift or double. But these folks were willing to serve, and what they served hit the tasty-buds on all marks. Especially Doug, who was homespun-honest & proud of sharing his favorites from the menu, and at a standpoint of a good reason to even work there. He was scrumptious - bonus! Or then food is just that good too! Late night (not quite Soho with your chums but one is willing to reflect) patience-hospitality coupled with any flavor of heat that you're willing to challenge yourself with heat (1 to 5) at 10:00 in the evening after a good show...by all means go! This place is great! They've done an excellent job of integrating a modern take on Indian. The food is delicious and they have a lot of interesting non-traditional menu items that still resemble traditional flavors. The cauliflower was excellent!!! My favorite Indian food place in Durham. The samosas with chaat are a great appetizer. The murg mykanwala and garlic naan = ideal combo. The lamb korma was good as well. Great for a date or casual meet-up with friends. If you think you're tough but actually a liiittle bit of a wimp like me, I'd pick one spice level down from what you'd originally intended. Went tonight with a close friend for the first time. Really liked the bar selection and ambiance. Service was very good. Restaurant gets a-little loud so be aware if it's an important convo you are planning to have during dinner. Not the best place for kids either - tables are close together and menu I wouldn't think is most kid friendly. Now for the part you are waiting for: We had the sausage and cauliflower small plates - cauliflower was good. Sausage was ok. Entree were wings (very good) and the seafood red curry (was bland). We had planned to go to Cheeni because it came highly recommended, but it was closed. We were very pleased to stumble upon this place instead. We had vegetable samoas, garlic naan, a pumpkin curry, and a chicken tika Marsala (their name for it is slightly different). They hit my spice level just right. Everything tasted fresh, fragrant, and flavorful. Texture was excellent. Ambiance was lovely with some nice cocktail options including non-alcoholic. There's impressive depth of flavor hiding at this British Indian restaurant downtown - and if you're a spice nut, look no further, as they have a couple of secret higher spice levels than are listed on the menu, and will be happy to give you a bowl of hot sauce to see if you're worthy. I wasn't (and never claimed to be) but my partner happily gasped and huffed his way through the whole bowl. I LOVED the fried cauliflower appetizer - I'm also a sucker for whole fried leaves, eaten like potato chips. If I had an air fryer I'd probably just use it to fry basil and make bags of healthy 'chips'. The anjeer kofta were not my jam - they were too sweet for an entree in my opinion, but you can't argue with the fact that they were at least creative, filled with seedy figs and creamy paneer. Someone recommended their saag to me, and that person was right. I got it with lamb, which was generously added, tender, and very gamey. But honestly the saag would have stood on its own. Often a nothing kind of dish at a buffet that can taste like creamed spinach, this was clearly on another level, with obvious mustard greens and strong spices. read more

Yummy! Never had British Indian food so wanted to give this place a try. Best way to arrive is via street parking or finding a parking deck then walking. We came on a weekend night so it seemed like only those with reservations got a seat. We were fortunate a couple seats were open at the bar. We got a couple cocktails and some small plates to share. We didn't give the curries a chance because we were intimidated by the prices, since we felt we could get just as delicious and more affordable curries at other mom and pop establishments. That's a preconceived notion but upon learning people really like them, I'll give them a shot in the future. We ordered the most unique servings of pani puri(looked like special shot glasses), sausage rolls, samosa chaat, and samosas. They were all tasty in their own way. The pani puri was fun to shot but I felt like the pastry ball contained more air than stuffing. The samosa chaat was our favorite due to the vibrant flavors and different textures. The atmosphere was very much a cocktail-bar, dimly lit atmosphere, very different from other Indian establishments I frequent. Viceroy was absolutely delicious!! My fiancée and I came here after getting engaged and had a wonderful meal. The garlic naan was uniquely thin, but super tasty. The cocktails we ordered were Spicy Babi and the Mumbai Mule. We got the butter chicken and saag paneer. We ordered the paneer in mild and butter chicken medium. If you enjoy spice then the medium is perfect, be warned the spicy is very hot. Would recommend! We left completely full and the portion sizes were perfect. read more

I just wanted to say while Viceroy has a good menu & amazing food, they really really shine in their specials. We were lucky enough to try Vada Pav & Paneer 65 from Viceroy as a special over half a year later we are still craving it. My husband happily states he would buy it every day if he could get it so if you ever see those things on special I HIGHLY recommend you check it out. We've had these dishes all over the world and it was hands down the best. We used to live in a place with several very authentic Indian food restaurants and after moving to the Triangle we were really sad at the lack good Indian food here till we found Viceroy. I don't over exaggerate by saying when we got home and had our first bites (it was takeout) we quite literally started jumping with joy, just like our tastebuds! They also had an amazing beyond meat naan special once that was absolutely amazing. I can't stress enough how much vegetarians appreciate when the menu isn't always so meat & seafood heavy and actual thought goes into vegetarian friendly dishes so this really stood out to me. Food is delicious! First time at a sit down Indian restaurant was pretty overwhelming but the waitress was really nice. I went with a group of friends and we got the gobi sukka appetizer (battered cauliflower), london mixed grill, paneer, and garlic naan . The lamb was to DIE for, we got a lot of chicken with the mixed grill which was good but I wish there was more than 1 lamb piece. Cauliflower was good and so was the naan. Personally I don't love paneer but my friend really enjoyed her meal. One complaint I did have- the hostess rudely came up to us at the end of the meal asking when we were leaving because we were no longer eating. Uh....Our payment/checks were evidently on the table waiting to be rung up....granted that part did take a while but nothing we can do and not our fault it hasn't gotten picked up yet. I recently ate at the Viceroy with my husband and some friends. The ambiance is very cool- awesome wallpaper, lots of gorgeous wood, and a very cozy vibe (we were visiting on a cold night, so it seemed especially nice). Our server was very friendly and attentive. The food came quickly. Parking is exactly how you would expect for downtown Durham- we parked in a free lot several blocks away and enjoyed our brisk walk over. As far as food, they start you off with these little multi-colored rice crackers. Cute and tasty. They have "small plates" and entrees. I opted for two small plates so I could try more items. My Bollywood Poutine was rosemary-spiced truffle fries topped with mumbai-spiced chicken, fresh peas and Parmesan. It was delicious and also felt very decadent. The Platano Chaat wasn't quite what I expected- more hard plantain chips than kale and avocado dressing, but it just wasn't for me. We got garlic naan that was also to die for. My husband got the London Mix Grill which was large chunks of spiced meat, and I really enjoyed what I had of his, too. I like how they ask you how spicy you want things, on a scale of 1-6. The people at our table who got a level 3 spicy said they wouldn't have gone any hotter than that- but that's so subjective. The food all came at the same time and we all really enjoyed it. The portions were huge- we actually commented that we all wished the portions were half the size and the prices half as much. We all brought home massive amounts of food in doggie bags. :) I like how this is an Indian restaurant, but they are aiming for a British Pub feel so they have a lot of fusion elements. The British Pub has arrived in Durham. I have spent a significant portion of my career in England, and consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of this type of establishment. I'm also originally from India so I relish the food of my ancestors, however bastardized if may become as it traverses across continents and cultures. So imagine my surprise and delight when after arriving in Durham late on a Wednesday night, jet lagged and hungry, I stumbled upon The Viceroy within seconds of hitting Main Street. A British pub specializing in Indian cuisine - I could not have asked for anything more! They were about to close so I grabbed a stool at the bar. Perusing the menu, the jeera wings caught my eye. Roasted cumin-infused wings sautéed with peppers, onions and baby carrots said the description. "What spice level do you want?" the full-bearded young bartender asked when I ordered them. "We go from 1 to 6, which is what I usually get." I stared at him - he had a mischievous twinkle in his eye. "3 please" I smiled at him. "Good Choice!" he grinned back. The wings were delicious! Tender meat, infused with cumin (jeera in Hindi) and burn-your-chest-hair-off spicy! At a level 3! I was glad I decided not to play chicken with the bartender. After my meal, I sipped on water and wandered around a bit, checking out the decor (spot on), and photographs of leaders from the British Raj and the Indian independence movement a century ago. Wow. Top tier service and food. Went on a very busy Friday night, wait wasn't too bad, about an hour. Once we got to like 45mins/hr the manager/owner I'm not sure who said we could come inside and stand at a mini table area and order a cocktail and appetizer. So we got some naan to share and a cocktail. After about 15mins or so we were escorted to our seats and the service was fast and the food was very good. I wish I had taken some pictures but I had the Saag, I had it vegetarian style and it was 5/5. My boyfriend and I went here for date night and had a great experience. The hosts/servers were extremely quick and friendly, and the decor is beautiful. The atmosphere was cozy, but not claustrophobic; we were seated near another couple in a small space, yet it felt like our own private corner. The food was incredible - we especially enjoyed the cauliflower appetizer. Though the food was delicious, I will say we ordered our plates medium-spicy, but it just tasted mild to us. This experience seems to conflict with other reviews, so I recommend asking the server about spice levels to make sure you get what you want. The flavors were definitely there though. Ordered Gobi Sukka, London MixedGrill, Dal Bukhara, garlic naan. The cauliflower app was delicious, London mixed grill was alright (lamb was great, chicken was over-seasoned/ salty and shrimp did not taste fresh), dal was tasty. i like viceroy. the food is delish and the service is friendly. i HATE that they charge 15% on all take out orders, but it is what it is. i have no idea what the money is going towards, and that 15% amounted to $5 on my latest order. 15% to make the food and bring it to the front counter where i pick it up...? i ordered the murg mykanwala ($21) because it's the closest you can get to tikka masala and that's about the extent of my indian food exposure. it's good. asked for medium level spicy and i probably need to get hotter next time as it didn't really taste hot. also got the veggi samosas (2 in each order for $10) -- they are amazing! samosas in general are super delicious, and this was no exception. i'll be back for sure next time i'm in the durham area... but i still hate that 15% take out fee. read more

I cannot go to Durham without making a stop at The Viceroy. My stomach nor my psyche will allow it. I honestly believe it to be the best Indian food in the state of North Carolina. Food plus the service, are always impeccable. Side note: During the height of the pandemic, they did everything possible to keep staff and guests safe. They even shut down when staff members became ill, sharing the news and being transparent on social media. I was a fan long before the pandemic and will continue to be a loyalist after. Slowly inching back with contactless pickup, then reservation only indoor seating, contact tracing with temperature checks and such--I personally appreciated the care and pivoting during that crucial time. Another great reason to visit: It's one of the only good restaurants open downtown on Mondays. You're guaranteed a fantastic meal and experience. The atmosphere gives a nod to British colonial but with deep tried-and-true subcontinent vibes. The bar is gorgeous and full with craft-inspired cocktails and local beer on draft and in cans (or poured in a glass, if you're feeling fancy). Get the Jeera wings. I love, love, love spice but the mild spice here is about the equivalent of medium or hot anywhere else. They don't insult their guests' knowledge of spice by pandering to milder palates and I sincerely appreciate that too. Other favorites of mine: gobi sukka (cauliflower), anything lamb, London mixed grill is perfect for sharing or hoarding all to yourself, naan and the gulab jamon--it's actually sweetened with rose water and pistachio and not just simple syrup and cheap vanilla like other places. If dining in, you and your party are given 90 minutes to dine so don't be alarmed if you feel as if you're being rushed or your server is brusque. The atmosphere was really neat- looks like a typical pub but with old school printed wallpaper and portraits of famous Indians! We snagged a table on Sunday night with no reservation or waiting, but it was a full house! We decided to order a little bit of both worlds to enjoy it all.
