It's really hard to find a mechanic that you can trust. I found one in Vic's. Having moved to LO two years ago, I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a trustworthy mechanic. I've taken my Explorer and Outback to Mike for oil changes and other issues. Mike did some brake work on my Ford and shortly after that I had Discount Tire swap out my regular tires for my traction tires. Almost immediately, there was a scraping sound coming from under the car. Discount Tire "looked" at it and determined that nothing was wrong. The sound continued. I took it to Mike. He immediately troubleshot the problem and fixed it. He wouldn't let me pay. This is the sign of a trustworthy mechanic; someone who can charge you through the nose when given the opportunity...but instead they see it as an opportunity to do the right thing and keep you coming back. Called on a Thursday, described repair I needed, a gentleman named Mike said he'd look up a few things and call back. He did not. Waited 5 days, called again, Mike asked if I had gotten other quotes and what they were, and then said, yeah, they're all going to be like that. I asked if he wanted to quote the job, and he said no, it's more expensive to do the job than the value of the car. As a consumer, I am aware of this, the car is special to me, and I am going to have it done somewhere. I asked again if he wanted to quote it and he said no, if this were my car, I would call someone else!!! I tried twice to give them the business and this was based on a referral from a local friend. I'm a friendly person, nice phone voice, not demanding, trying to feed the local economy. I am still floored by this way of doing business. After Mike told me to go elsewhere...he literally hung up on me. No joke. Really uncalled for unkindness. I have zero idea whether they do good work or not and I will never know. read more

In November, while I was in Lake Oswego for business, I discovered a leak in my car. I called Vic's and they repaired my car immediately (within 2 hours) so I could make the drive home to Seattle and charged me a reasonable rate. I live in Portland now and took my car to a mechanic in Sellwood yesterday who misdiagnosed my problem, suggested repairs I didn't need, and treated me lousy while doing it. So, this morning I decided to return to Vic's. Once again the service was phenomenal. They diagnosed the problem, provided me with an estimate, and repaired it at a reasonable price. I couldn't ask for better service. It's so difficult for a consumer to find a mechanic you can trust to do a reliably good job while providing excellent customer service. I normally take my car to a friend's shop in Gresham. However, the fuel pump in my car decided to fail, making it impossible to take it that far. After calling a few places, and checking Yelp, we settled on Vic's, which is about a mile from our house. I was nervous because I always hear horror stories about how car mechanics take advantage of women. This was not true st all with Vic's. They were honest & were the same price as my friend's shop would have charged. They got the work done on time, and were very kind in every conversation I had with them. In the future, I would have no problem going there again. It was as delightful of an experience as you could have when dealing with a bummer of a situation. I highly recommend them! read more

Don't listen to the fake 5 star reviews. I went their awhile back to fix something on my bar that was rattling while i was driving. They said they could fix it and they fixed something completely different and i was left paying for 2 parts of the car to be fixed. Careful taking your car in. "Something else" will be wrong with your car and they'll fix it so you get charged more. Will never take here again. family and friends have had problems with this place too. read more

Came to Vics auto shop early afternoon, they were not busy. Mike was sitting down and looked like he was falling asleep. Needed a diagnostic as I just had one and wanted a 2nd opinion. Mike was not friendly at all (condescending)... and quoted $100 for a diagnostic and bring the car next day. I had called months before and was told $60 for diagnostics. Not all diagnostics take 1 hour. This was simple and poor customer service. No thank you. "Save on Tire Pros" on 72nd in Tigard, diagnosed it in 5-10 minutes and did not charge for that. Not a trust worthy mechanic. I called with a very specific question. I know what needs to be done to my rig so I was able to tell him exactly what I wanted. He refused to give me a price. All I wanted to know was if I could fix it this paycheck or next. I'm sorry but anyone that wont give you a price for a specific task is not some one I will ever due business with. I received such great customer service and quick, straight-forward auto services that I felt compelled to review them even though I mainly just review restaurants. So I needed the bulb for one of my signal lights changed. I called at 4:05 pm and they told me what needed to be done with my car. They asked if I could get in before 430pm since many people pick up their cars after this. Since I live 5 minutes away I went right away. They changed my light bulb and charged me only the cost of the bulb $3!!! (Seriously?! That's it?! No service cost?) I was out of there by 4:25pm. The lady at the front desk was the one I spoke with on the phone and she was quite nice. Overall, this is a great no-fuss place. My car was missing, hesitating, idling high and I couldn't diagnose the problem myself. Not knowing any better, I dropped my car off service here because I could walk home. The job was a comedy of errors and overcharging and it would take me far too long to give all the gory details here. Let me just say that if these guys can't tell you right away, up front, what is wrong with your car, take it somewhere else. My job should have cost a couple hundred but was nearly a thousand bucks as they threw part after part at my car, hoping something would stick. What finally stuck was my impression that these guys are only good at hooking a computer to a car and doing what the computer says to do. Good old-fashioned "I'll figure it out for you" doesn't live here. With the exception of the loaner car they provided, this was a miserable experience and I will never return to this outfit. I've been disappointed twice by this mechanic. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt because they seem like really nice people, but I won't be coming back. The issue is that twice I've taken my car in with explicit instructions in writing that they needed to give me a call and offer a quote before performing the work. Twice they have gone ahead with the work without my permission and charged me whatever it costs for work that may or may not have been necessary. In one case, they went forward with their solution when it was a "fix" that had been done recently. Totally unnecessary and ineffectual. Communication is not their strong suit and, frankly, I feel taken advantage of. read more

I was very pleased with the service I received at Vic's Auto Center. I brought my limping van in, and they were able to diagnose the issues and make the repairs at the exact cost they quoted me. My car was ready the next day, and when I picked it up, it had been washed, and the interior had been vacuumed. It drove and sounded like new again. Worked with these guys since about 2004, my 1997 Jetta and 2001 Impala currently. I don't even have the words. Mike is adorable, kind, professional and trustworthy. He kept my Jetta running for 4 yrs longer than it should. Instead of continuing to work on it he plainly said, "there's nothing else that can be fixed" I moved back to Oregon in 2013, from NC, my Impala had a long list of issues. The front desk lady was so kind to me. My tires were bald, I literally had to flee NC from an abusive relationship. She was astonished I made to Oregon with the shape my car was in. They are step by step getting things in order. I recently took my Impala to another mechanic to have a new catalytic converter installed. Vic's don't provide that service. Check engine light still on, $1687 in the hole and still can't get through deq. Now I need a PCM??? 600-800 bucks maybe...I call Vic's, tell Mike what's going on and he sets me straight. This place ripped my grandfather off and tried to rip me off, i own a 1960 impala told them i need a rebuild because of the blow by and they told me to throw away my old original engine for a 5 thousand dollar one that only costs 2500 to rebuild... im very unhappy and if you want work done to old cars go to happy valley. This place is full off crooks and cheats who just break your car to get more money, i had a tune up and instead they plugged my carburetor, i could go on with what they did wrong but its to much. Point being this place is not for old cars or people who know nothing of cars. read more

Do NOT take your Subaru here! My family has been taking their cars to Vic's for years, I stopped taking my nissan there after I was treated poorly a few years ago (their "women know nothing about cars" mentality sickens me). However my sister drives a legacy gt wagon and she blew the turbo in December. My parents took it to Vic's. The work cost over $3,000, expensive but understandable since they installed a brand new turbo from Subaru among other things because the car wasn't properly maintained. I should mention that a more powerful aftermarket turbo would have cost around $400 but I guess they don't know how to buy parts. I have been driving the vehicle for a month and I knew something wasn't right. Long story short I took it to my buddy's subaru shop and he quickly found the problem, they secured the new turbo inlet with a ZIP TIE. We smoke tested it and the hose was leaking a disturbing amount, the system wasn't pressurized, and the turbo wasn't able to function correctly and as a result my gas mileage was awful and the car made a horrible noise. For over $3,000 of work I would have hoped they'd secure a hose correctly with the proper clamp instead of taking a shortcut and saving themselves 25 minutes of labor. The laziness and level of disrespect they demonstrated for this vehicle and us as customers is appalling. read more

I take my Saab in to them for service. It has become more of a challenge to repair this car since GM stopped selling them but their work has always been good and reliable. It is a good little car with very low mileage so hard to give up on it. What recently happened was above and beyond what anyone should expect of a service center. I had a failure of one of my taillight assemblies. I special ordered the part and when it arrived a piece was broken out of it. They installed it so I had a working turn signal and charged me nothing. I re-ordered the part from another company, took the car back in today and they swapped it out for me and still refused to charge me a nickle! I don't know what to say as thank you feels inadequate. I believe you will want to stay away from this service unless you do not know what you are doing. They seem to want to fix anything and everything regardless if it makes sense.
