My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to eat around the Louvre and discovered this affordable place! We entered and conversed in French at first, but the waiter asked if we spoke English, and he switched languages for us. Most of the staff speaks English, which is convenient for those traveling, but I'm sure if you would also like to practice your French, this would also be a great place to do it. Our waiter explained the meat and fish of the day to us, and my boyfriend ended up getting the fish of the day (I couldn't remember what filet fish, but it came with a tartar sauce with celery along with mashed potatoes). I got the Beef Ribeye Steak with Fries since I wanted to try steak frites in Paris. I also ordered a 15cl glass of Pouilly Fumé. The meal came with a sliced baguette on the side as well. The food was delicious! And the wine complimented the meal very well with its strong aftertaste. The taste of the steak wasn't too strong, but it really brought out the flavor of the roasted thyme. The waiters constantly checked up on us throughout the meal, and also asked us what brings us here to Paris. The inside was overwhelmingly smoky because their steak frites is with thyme that is burnt... which does not add to the dish. Our steak was overdone and under-seasoned (no seasoning other than burnt thyme), the duck confit was a bit dry and over cooked. The entire meal was underwhelming. I finally took an L in Paris. After eating excellent food and getting excellent service throughout Paris, my wife and I stumbled on what seems to be a racist restaurant. I thought it was unusual that all the Asians were herded into the back corner of the restaurant where it was extremely hot and stuffy. But what's the point of opening the windows, you're just inhaling 2nd hand smoke. It's Paris though, EVERYONE smokes. cest la vie... You know something is wrong when you've ordered your food, and the table that was seated 20 minutes after you, orders AND gets their food first. It's ok though, they're busy, kind of, so let's give them some slack. Another 15 minutes pass. Ok, it's so hot I'm starting to lose my appetite. The waiter's spidey sense must be tingling because the moment my wife and I toy with the idea of asking about the food or just cancelling the order, the waiter grabs the food from the kitchen. The universe heard us! Actually... I wish it didn't. First off, steak frites can be made terribly wrong. Come here if you want to experience awe. Yes, I was in awe, about how awful it tasted. The most common French cuts of beef are the entrecôte, rib steak. This was chewy, full of tendon and flavorless, aside from the overwhelming taste of rosemary. Subpar frites considering I had better at a street vendor just earlier at lunch. The thing is, I didn't want to be rude so I didn't complain, but I also only ate half of my meal because I'm a firm believer of not wasting food. This time I just couldn't do it. I guess they took offense though. Because from that point on, it was apparent they didn't want to give any service anymore. I've never had a harder time trying to get the bill. And when we did, the young man who apparently was the manager or owner's son took his time with the bill. He walk around, chatted with people, set a table with utensils when the restaurant was less than a 3rd full. I've never seen anyone so happy doing busy work. Oh crap, we need change? Yup, another 15 minutes wasted while the restaurant continued to empty and the "manager" chatted with the bartender who was cleaning cups. You know what though, we still left a tip.. but here's a tip for everyone else. Come here if you like disappointment. I knew Paris had to have bad food (and service). FINALLY FOUND IT!! Do yourself a favor. Walk 5 minutes and go to Cafe Blanc. We had a 2nd meal there. The service was AMAZING and sooo friendly, plus the food was good. It really was night and day. Oh, I won't even get started with the poor excuse of a foie gras salad my wife ordered. YMMV, but others have had subpar ratings on the steak frites also. We wandered in here after spending a few hours at the Louvre for dinner. They have mocktails (although, I don't think the French understand what mocktails are). I had the cracker which really just a straight up juice smoothie. We shared the French onion soup which really hit the spot after walking around on a December day - not greasy, not too much cheese and I have a soft spot for soggy bread and soup. Duck confit was the star of the night. The skin was extra crispy. The duck was well seasoned and well paired with the potatoes that were heavenly drenched in duck fat. I'm glad there was a small side of greens but I could have done without the dressing. Beef ribeye with fries came out sizzling and exciting but was a bit tough to chew and on the dry side. My husband took me here for dinner. This is a busy restaurant with short line ups that quickly accumulate and dissipate at the door. The service is average, the waiters have to many tables to serve and forget to bring bread or water. They needed to be reminded in order for this to happen. The main course was alright, nothing outstandingly different. Fried duck is their speciality, you get one small thigh piece with fries and salad. My husband had this and thought it was great, although a larger portion is duck would have been better. I had ordered the Salmon Tar- tar as the seafood option, which on the menu has a grilled option. I was pretty excited about this, so I had clarified with the waiter if they could cook it all the way through. My other option was to get the vegetarian burger instead. They informed me that they could cook the salmon all the way through..... well it was truly Salmon Tar-tar, raw as it could be. I really think the staff here are so busy to pay attention to any special requests. Note to self: next time stick with the vegetarian burger Lastly the washroom situation is nasty. Bummed at myself for not ordering how I should have here-I came on Sunday and thankfully they are open (note: a LOT of places are closed on Sundays in Paris). They offer a fun, reasonably priced brunch but instead I went for the fish of the day. It was tasty, but when I saw the oj, coffee, and salad with scrambled eggs the people next to me got...I regretted not being a little more bold. Okay, three check-ins in three days may seem a bit much, but when you're in Paris and have found the real thing you keep going back! This quaint little restaurant has all we were looking for in a eatery...good food, good drink, and a friendly, helpful, English-speaking manager who spent time with us each time we arrived. Inside seating is warm and welcoming, but to get the full experience opt for the sidewalk seating. As we left tonight the manager (who looks a bit like James Franco) sought us out and made sure to shake our hands and say Au revoir since we leave for London tomorrow. Enough about the ambiance, the food is amazing! Tonight I had escargot for the first time in my life and I will definitely have it again. Steak was my choice for an entree and my wife had duck confite...both excellent choices! The wine was chosen with care (a selection from Provence) and the creme brûlée for dessert was an excellent complement for the meal. But as I said, whether the food or ambiance was good was secondary to the fact that the staff was phenomenal. My Parisian friend wanted to take me here for authentic French food and because it was an affordable brasserie. And to be honest, the food wasn't all too memorable. I had better French food else where in Paris. I ordered a roasted chicken with mashed potatoes. The chicken was ok. I don't think it was flavored too strongly, but I don't remember it being dry. Like, I said...not too memorable. Also shared the fromage for dessert. I was expecting a harder type of cheese, but what they gave us was the consistency of yogurt it tasted like yogurt too. Ok..but a little weird. What I do remember was how tightly packed this place was. It is very popular among locals as well as tourists. But the three of us were squeezed into a little corner and to get out of our seats, we literally had to push our table around like puzzle because we were packed in so tightly. After a tumultuous week around Paris, we needed a victory - so we chose Bistrot Victoires for dinner one fine evening in May. They astutely sussed out that we were American pretty quickly - they handed us English menus and seemed to encourage us to sit up front by the bar instead of in the back which appeared to be filled with more French speaking clientele. Which is fine - honestly, this was the least rude treatment we received in Paris. Plus, the bartender from Poland was good for a chat. While service was a little slow, the food was delicious and the drinks were exceptional. Nice spot, nice ambiance - definitely counted it as a victory for our trip! read more

My mom and I made the journey out here for their famous crème brûlée...fantasies of sweet, vanilla-scented cream underneath a crispy, sugary shell of caramelized sugar helped us endure the long, muggy Métro trip. We got there around 3pm, walked in, and requested a table for two. The gentleman behind the bar turned to his female co-worker, who took one look at us and said "non". So he turned to me and said they were closed. Despite the fact that the restaurant was still quite busy and packed with very happy-looking patrons. Mom observed that there were no Asian customers inside and guessed that was why we weren't welcome, but I'd rather not believe it. Just ate here, had duck confit served with a small portion of salad and Pommes de Terre Sarladaise (potatoes sauteed in duck fat). Duck was juicy, a tiny bit on the chewy side (maybe overcooked a tad) but still delicious and for 10 euros, couldn't expect better. Had a glass of Cotes du Rhone which was 3 euros, mediocre but not bad, especially for the price. Bottle of water and basket of bread on the table to start, bread went well with an appetizer of terrine de canard (duck terrine). For a late night meal within walking distance of the Louve and the Opera House, this cozy bistro should be on your list. For those that do not know French, they do have an English menu. Poached Egg in a Bourguignon Sauce - The eggs were cooked with just a right amount of runny yolk (which I love) . The eggs were in a lake of savory bourguignon sauce. there was no need to add salt nor pepper as this was seasoned well. Soupe aux Oignons (French Onion Soup) - Hot onion soup is common, however, this soup was freshly made ass it did not taste stale nor from a box. Topped with broiled cheese that was wonderfully melty, the play on texture was evident. Make sure to have plenty of bread to soak up every drop of soup before you move onto your next course. Tartine Mr. Seguin - two sliced of bread toasted with several melted cheeses on top and a side salad. As the amount of cheese was heavy (not a bad thing nor a complaint), anything other than fresh greens would have been overkill so the chef's choice for salad was a brilliant one. Duck Confit - Mixed feelings for this dish. The duck was delicious where you can taste the meat with a touch of seasoning without being tough nor gamey. However, though delicious, you can tell this was cooked previously and reheated. I did keep in mind that any confit dish requires hours of cook time and in no way will a restaurant be expected to cook one same day as the guest would be waiting for 3 hours. When I am in Paris, I could easily find myself back here so a light meal after a day of walking and sightseeing. read more

This place should be declared an international treasure! What a find! A stone's throw from the Louvre, wonderfully casual and unimposing, there is no reason to forego what will no doubt be a delightful and reasonably priced meal for anywhere nearby. Its casual atmosphere and simple style of cooking is a great introduction to French food. There is no pressure to dress well or know the first thing about French food since it's not a ritzy place. Casual, buzzing and very romantic in spite of its unassuming nature. It was a weekday evening when I visited but the place was heaving. Luckily there was no wait for a table for two but some diners behind us were not so lucky. The crowd seemed to be a mix of tourists and locals with a slight bias towards English speaking tourists but the menu was offered first in French and then in English. There is no diference between the two menus, no secret orders only available on the French menu despite it having a noticeably longer list of items. This is because the liqeurs/liquors and aperitifs are only written on the French menu. The food and wine itself is the same on both. Not much into starters, I dove in head first with a duck confit and my wife went for a steak & frites after being mesmerised by the smell of smoking thyme (the garnish for their steaks.) Armed with a glass of Macon each our server's recommendation) we both ended up having plate envy and spent the entire meal stealing each other's food. My duck was cooked perfectly as was her steak and the accompanying frites and potatoes were delicious too. For dessert my wife opted for a cafe gourmand (a coffee with a selection of mini desserts) and I ordered the spiced prunes. Both were excellent but I have to say that spiced prunes were really something to remember my entire trip by. After a heroic struggle to finish off our desserts, we were surprised to discover that the bill only came to EUR39.80. Astonishing value for what I regard as one of the best meals I've ever had. No fuss, no haughty attitude and no pomp and circumstance, just really simple cooking with friendly service at a great price. read more

Every time I drop in Paris this is a must for me to visit just as much as I have to take a walk in the Royal Palace Garden's or in Le Marais for me is part of the "parisien" experience. Just a walk around palais-royal you can find this little french bistro with huge mirrors and old wood decor. My recommendation is to grab the "confit du canard" and either the chocolate cake or crème brûlée to finish a perfect meal here. Weekdays you will find all local people, stoping for lunch from work. Thanks to the other yelpers - we found this place - a cool little place tucked away in a (relatively) quiet corner of Paris - Bistrot Victoires was a perfect low key dinner spot. There is NO WAY we'd run across this one without help from other reviewers as.... well... we have no business with the bank of France...., and there aint much else around this place to be honest. We enjoyed a cheese dish with tasty brie, another few creamy soft cheeses, and decent bread. The popular main courses here (beef with thyme, roast chicken, and duck) are excellent bets here. The chicken meat is wonderfully moist, served with mashed potatoes in a flavorful gravy. Duck is pretty much the same story - a thigh that comes with perhaps a bit more skin and less meat than the chicken - but still very flavorful. This guy is served with sliced fried potatoes - a nice way to have a "non"french fry... umm... ..... french fry.... The beef with thyme... when you order this, the whole restaurant will eventually know it - as the place is filled with the smell of seared meat... (droooool). Desserts are pretty good here - creme brulee is... good. Ice cream is... good. The rum icecream with pastry was the standout and recommendation for dessert here - that icecream will be hard to forget - nice and rich creamy flavor.... I wish i could just have a bowl of that! Defenitely a safe bet dinner here. There wasn't any wait for our table, service was pretty good, cool laid back atmosphere, not too loud, nor too busy. Frankly I was a little disappointed after reading all the raving reviews. The place didn't live up to the hype. The decor was nice enough and the staff helpful but the food didn't live up to much. Ordered an "entrecote" or steak and it was a subpar piece of meat. My girlfriend ordered a salad and it was really cheap looking and tasting. I won't go back and I think unless money is your absolute priority there is no reason you should go there either. read more

My wife and I have been going to this place regularly during our yearly (or so) trips to Paris for quite a while now. Two years ago, it was mentioned in the Frugal Traveler's story on Paris, but that does not seem to have affected the place (fortunately). It's a very "original" French bistrot, with a simple, classic menu. Salmon tartare is outstanding, as is the Salade Oceanique (though, bring an appetite for lots of seafood for that one). I don't eat steak, but the people I have taken there who do absolutely love it. Start with a kir, order some wine, get some food, have dessert, and stay all night. It's kid-friendly, which is a new requirement for us on trips abroad. I live this place and will continue to go whenever I'm in Paris. read more
