I'm thrilled Denton finally has a fresh,fast and delicious place to stop in for pho and yummy "viet-bites". I first went to Viet Bites the week that they opened and have been a few times since. Every time it met my expectations. You can call in orders to-go and they're ready in 5-10 minutes for pick up, which is a godsend after a grueling morning of college lectures when you require sustenance and you need it quick. One of the owners was working on the first day that I went and he was nice enough to make an off the menu suggestion, grilled chicken kimchi spring rolls! And they were awesome!! There's a build-your-own option for spring rolls so you can actually order this if you want. I would highly recommend it because its spicy, fresh and all around delicious. The beef pho was very good as well. On another visit I tried the grilled lemongrass pork bahn me and it was top notch. Fresh and crisp veggies and served on an equally fresh roll. The only thing I think that would have me coming in more often is if they offered some warm plated noodle dishes besides vermicelli. Some creative dishes with the lovely sauces they offer. Moving on, Personally, I've never stayed for dessert while out for vietnamese noms, but Viet Bites has a couple of unexpected options to keep you at the table. The coconut waffle is green...and served in the shape of Texas! It's delicious so don't doubt it and try it out. The creme Brulee on the menu is unexpected but done well. FINALLY, a Vietnamese restaurant in Denton. I was pretty excited! But it had fell a bit short of my expectations. Cons: - Waiter sat us down at a table near the brown curtains, and we could distinctly smell waste products coming from the restrooms. Not a pleasant smell. Try not to sit near the brown curtains. - Ordered food; food came out pretty fast, but they gave me the wrong dressing. - Rice plates' portions were SMALL for the price, compare to other viet restaurants in DFW. There were not enough meat and it didn't come with soup, like most typical Vietnamese restaurants do. - Meat didn't taste like the grilled meat most Vietnamese restaurants offer - it was pretty bland. (We ordered grilled pork and chicken.) - Hours were pretty short; 11 AM - 8:30 PM?! I eat at 9 PM for dinner usually. Pros: - Veggies were REALLY fresh. I loved it! - Place was cute; owner was attentive and nice. - Banh mi was pretty good; I have had better, but it was good. I was disappointed because I thought Denton would finally have a legit Vietnamese restaurant so I don't have to drive all the way to Carrolton/Plano to eat!! I thought I can finally save gas, but guess not. :-( The rice portions were too small for the price, and the meat didn't offer enough flavor. The banh mi was great though. I will be back, however - I can't wait to try the desserts! I hope their bubble tea is good too. Okay so I went for lunch today to try the pho and boba. Their thai tea boba cost me $3.50 and is BAD. They use fresh brewed herbal tea in their boba, which is nice to know but not very nice to DRINK when there are a LOT of herb grinds floating in your boba that are really unpleasant because you can feel them in your teeth and throat after each sip. Its like they straight up didn't filter at all. On top of the nasty herb grinds, the thai tea itself was waaaay watered down. I was offered to have another drink made. I asked for a taro smoothie. Good GOD was it sweet. It was just.....I mean I know most boba places use powders for flavoring, but the flavor was off the charts artificial. Like imagine 2/3 taro flavoring powder and 1/3 crushed ice. SUPER nasty. Ended up throwing it away because ugh it was so gross... Now for the pho. Cost me around $8. It wasnt BAD, but I was pretty surprised to be served pho without green onions on top. That was a first. The broth could've used some green onions because it was a little flavorless and was too oily. Pho broth is supposed to be "cleaner" than that. My total was about $13 and boy did I feel ripped off. $13 for nasty boba and oily pho? Screw that, man. Never ordering either of these things again. I love the original Viet Bites on Elm Street. Despite the service being incredibly slow over there, we were always pleased with our food. This new location on Fry is borderline horrible. I've been there twice now because I work on campus, and both times my meat was gray and withered. I don't know what the heck they are doing over there. My bowl was also incredibly flavorless that could NOT be fixed with an extra ginger citrus sauce. We ordererd a fried egg both times (an extra $1.5, and both times it was forgotten so they had to bring it out 10 minutes later. The only saving grace of the whole meal was the iced coffee with boba. I really home they get their game plan together, b/c the food is not worth going back for. It sucks because the space is really cool and walkable. Please get higher quality meat! read more

I'm not really a fan. Went here to try pho for the very first time and I was utterly disappointed. I didn't know what good pho was supposed to taste like, but I for sure knew that it wasn't supposed to taste like oily water. That was the first and last time I had that dish at viet bites. Their bahn mi's are decent! A little over priced (around $6 when the standard price is about $3.50), but I'd still pay with no complaints to have one for lunch. I get the chicken bahn mi with avocado and then splash some fish sauce on dat hoe. soooo good~ The spring rolls are good as well. There are some sanitary issues going on. The workers do not use gloves to prepare the spring rolls (gross). I've witnessed them. So beware of that. To be on the safe side, watch them make the spring rolls. So I've been there twice. First the menu is hard to understand, and they don't have all the dishes I would expect from a Vietnamese Restaurant. I ordered Pho both of the time, the broth was light, I can't say it tastes good, it has so little meat in it and they were sliced very thin, and only very little vegetables come with it. I love beansprout, but there are only 2 to 3 oz. Two more things, on my last visit, they didn't bring me my drink(just water), even when the food arrives, I still haven't got my water, I reminded the waiter once, still no water, I eventually asked another waitress for water. ASKED THREE TIMES for my water And they have very strange opening hours, closes 8:30 at night ? and closed Sunday. To sum it up. We've been waiting for the place to open...finally got a place to go for noodles and pho. (Yes, they have bahn mi too, but the sammies didn't look good enough to break our addiction to another locale's version.) Overall, Viet Bites is off to a pretty good start. I found the food to be not quite authentic and not quite Americanized. It was a good blend. The fish sauce in the noodle bowl wasn't as pungent as I've had elsewhere and I needed to add lime to the dish, but I enjoyed the food. The issues we had and saw were expected, given the recent opening. They take orders at the table, but they might have done better to let us order and give us a number for the table. I know some people dislike that, but then you know what to do if you want to order more. So, four stars because there were hiccups. First, go early rather than late. We sat down before things got busy, around 6ish, so we were helped quickly and received our food quickly. A couple nearby came in 15 minutes later, got their drinks, and never heard from a server again. They left, a bit disgruntled. (After watching everything, I would suggest that if you don't get waited on quickly, go to the front and place your order. The staff was quick at collecting the take-out orders, but the waitresses didn't seem to know who was assigned to which tables.) That being said, the staff learned from the couple's departure. The staff pow-wowed and started checking on the tables more regularly. On our dishes, almost everything was right. They left out the kimchi out of one of the noodle bowls. I would have asked for some, but our waitress never came back to the table after delivering the food. Last, I agreed with the sentiment that the meat was a bit light. It was good, but 33 to 50% more would have been better. All that being said, they're doing well for a newly opened place. I think things will smooth out. Absolutely revolting. The Pho is disgusting - tastes like diluted MSG and rotten meat. Speaking of which, I got only four pieces of flank beef, and one was nothing more than gristle. The rest were hardly more appetizing, as they were somehow both dehydrated AND grossly fatty. I love pho so very much and I gave this place every chance to shine like five stars to me, but I feel like I have to pull the uno after so many customer service gaffes. I should have stopped after the incident where the server told me the credit card machine was down and if I'd like him to write down my card info to charge when the machine was up. I said no and that I would pay cash. After walking inside, lo and behold my card info was already written down and I had to request quite tersely to get them to hand that over. The two times since that, the wrong size came out in addition to taking too long for my taste. My final Bite consisted of waiting in the lobby at a table for more than 10 minutes with no other customers while the two servers just did other stuff and didn't even make eye contact or offer to eventually be with us. They did get our order in just before I was going to walk and I quite regret it. The food was tasty, but paying more than ten dollars for soup was outrageous (plus tip!!). The servers knew we had been there since their first week and didn't even act like anything was amiss. So I am done. Being mistreated so many times will lead me elsewhere. Went here for the first time yesterday (2/12/13). I'll get this out of the way, I'm Viet so I've had real Viet food. Looking at the menu, this place at com (rice), buon, pho, and banh mi for Viet foods, and quite a bit of dessert options. Had the VB sample appetizers to try a little bit of everything and it was pretty good for the price. Two of the spring rolls, eggrolls, and cheese wontons (not Viet, but I guess to appeal to normal people) and rice chips. I had the buon thit nuong (vermicelli noodles w/ pork) here and it was fairly good for the size. Veggies were fresh, but overall taste was a bit bland. After the meal I had the mango bubble tea (with boba) and they use real mango, which makes this place bubble tea worth it! At the end, we ordered the fried bananas, but it took over 15 minutes to make so we ended up not getting it and leaving; however, because of this, one of the cooks/owner comped us our meal, which made the overall experience worthwhile. While this place is still new, working out the food-preparation times will make this place a very good Vietnamese place in Denton. read more

I don't know to much about Vietnamese food besides the standard fare of Bahn Mi and Pho. However I do know fresh tasting quality food, and Viet Bites delivers every time. Never a disappointing meal. The Bahn Mi with the lemongrass pork is so flavorful. All the add ons, cilantro, Pickled carrot etc... Is always super fresh. Also fantastic spring rolls, again fresh and light but still flavorful when dipped in one of there 3 sauces. The peanut sauce is personal favorite but the fish sauce is very good as well. Lastly, the avocado bubble tea has slowly grown on me. My wife always order it and the last time we ate here I ended up drinking about half of it. My only down side is service can seem a bit understaffed at times. But the staff is always very friendly and apologetic for wait time. Take away: Again I go back to the word fresh. Sadly, I have to give this place 2 stars. To start off with, the cafe sudah was horrible.. not so sure why, but it was extremely watered down and just didn't taste right at all. The pho was, like everyone says, really bland. Had to add sriracha and some other type of sauce to give it any flavor at all. Honestly, the only reason I gave it two stars was for the eggrolls. The food doesn't taste bad, but don't come here looking for authentic Vietnamese. The flavors are ok and the amount of meat is ridiculously small. It has a very kind and helpful staff, so there's that. I had the pho with beef rare steak and beef broth. I didn't get very many noodles and only 4 thin pieces of beef. The broth was ok, but nothing special. My boyfriend ordered chicken and rice. He got a large since he wanted a lot of chicken but it seems that with the size change, you'll get more rice, not more meat. He agreed that while the food didn't taste bad, it was still disappointing. If you've got a huge craving for Vietnamese food while in Denton, go ahead and try it out as it's the only Vietnamese restaurant in there. Otherwise, this is a place you won't really miss. read more

Ate there a week after they opened on a Friday night. Later in the week, picked up a to-go order. Food was great both times. They are still working out the kinks being a new restaurant but nothing to complain about. They are located in a small location that was once Tom and Joe's. Since then, it's been several other restaurants that haven't been successful. They have totally remodeled and the space is now bright and modern. The dining area is small but they have utilized all the interior space. Once the weather warms up, there will be plenty of room with their outdoor seating area. We ordered the sampler appetizer which consisted of spring rolls, egg rolls, crab rangoon and shrimp chips. Three sauces were served along with the appetizer. The sampler appetizer was excellent. The spring rolls were generously filled with shrimp. The crab rangoon were delicious and the egg rolls were crispy but not greasy. Definitely recommend the appetizer. I ordered the pho with flank steak and my husband ordered a vermicelli bowl with beef. I thought my pho was great. Lots of vegetables and steak. Condiments were generous as well. I had to ask for more lime and a large spoon but they were incredibly busy and not a big deal. They were also catering an event for the Thin Line Film festival that night so they did a great job considering they were spread thin. Husband thought his dish was tasty but he felt like the portion size was a bit small. Picked up a couple of bahn mi sandwiches. We picked up a shrimp and beef bahn mi and they were pretty good. For $4.50 and a side of shrimp chips, you can't beat it for lunch. Once they get their routines and procedures they will be awesome. Don't let that delay your visit because the food is delicious. I had just started college life here in Denton. I discovered this place when one of my friend went to buy Pho there. So I had always wanted to go back there to try the pho noodle soups when I had time. Being on fry street it was really convenient to go. So when I got tried of the cafeteria food on campus I'll go to fry street and get take out from Viet Bites. It's one of the best Pho Noodle Soups I had since coming to Denton. One day I decide to introduce my boyfriend to this little place of Pho Noodle Soup Heaven ( at least according to me) it was a instant hit. We both loved it. We would always take it to go, so there was little of the ingredient that came in each small bag along with the soup and noodles. We would alway want more. One time I had the idea of eating in the shop instead of carrying it back to the dorm, in the shop we can get as much of the bean sprout or jalapeños and cilantro as we want. There was also new sauces that were available in the store that wasn't available when we got take out. There was Chinese snacks that was available in the store. Tho we never bought them before they were good. I know 'cause they were snacks that were familiar to me. From then on whenever we had the chance or had a Pho carving we would go eat there. Tiny Place with big bold flavors! I enjoyed the tiny bite sized pork egg rolls.... Although they only serve 3... Which leaves fighting over the 3rd one a bit hostile! I ordered the Pho w/ chicken! They have tons of appetizers and the noodle bowls, pho, and rice plates are all great. Their new curry noodle bowl is my favorite thing I've tried there. Though I went to school in Denton, I didn't spend too much time exploring the area until recently when I started at a new company. Fellow co-worker and myself were craving pho and another co-worker mentioned Viet Bites. First, the place a bit hard to find for us newbies (not used to streets sneaking up on us). Parking wasn't the best but we've come to find this is common in Denton. After being seated, we ordered apps. Crab Rangoon- not bad, definitely have had better. Sampler Platter- the peanut sauce for the shrimp rolls were meh (something different), but I did enjoy them. The egg rolls were pretty plain. Honestly I enjoyed the shrimp chips more than anything else on the plate. Tofu Fries- Probably the best looking/smelling dish as an app. Both co-workers enjoyed it. However, the whole reason to come to a Viet restaurant was for pho. Sadly this place disappointed. The broth (we both got beef) was super oily and had no flavor depth. We had to put a whole ton of sriracha and build some flavor. Definitely not my favorite pho. Also, the meat option is pretty limited. I like mine with rare steak, flank, tripe and tendon. We also had pretty slow service. The place wasn't packed on a Wednesday afternoon for a lunch rush, but it still took us about 20 minutes to get a check. We weren't a big group- only 4. I stopped in with a friend of my daughters, who is attending UNT. The restaurant is tiny. The wait staff all appeared Asian, which lends an atmosphere of credibility. Restaurant was ok clean, needed to be dusted out in some corners if you follow my drift. But not unacceptable. The food was cheap, which is nice. The bowl of pho with thin sliced steak was average and nice, I've had many and this wasn't the best, but got the job done. Also had spring rolls, which were tasty. One of my favorite restaurants! The restaurant itself is very small but has a great patio. Patio is small as well, but has a nice feel to it. The staff is always extremely friendly and helpful. They are usually busy but always do a great job checking on you and getting whatever you need Now for the food! We always start out with the tofu fries. By far the best tofu I have had. The are fried and seasoned perfectly. They are the perfect thickness for eating tofu and come with quite a few. When I become sad that my tofu fries plate has become empty, out comes a very large banh mi sandwich. The bread is always fresh and delicious. I get the lemongrass tofu and it is so good. Watch out for their jalapeños though because they will bite you back. The kimchi is delicious and goes perfectly with the sandwich. They also bring you chips with the sandwich. This is definitely one of my favorite little places to eat. It is great every time! Some day I will actually try the pho, but their sandwiches are so good it's hard to try anything else. read more

High expectations, High amount of disappointment. I generally like to find the best in local restaurants but it was a little difficult here. I started off entering the quaint little establishment and enjoyed the atmosphere, very casual. The first thing I ordered was the Vietnamese Coffee. The Coffee is the number one reason I will come back to try again. It's nice that they allow you to hold on to the strainer and such until the perfect amount is up to your discretion. They also sell the cute and little house supply for relatively cheap. Next, I ordered the egg rolls and the Pho' get about the meat. It's generally almost impossible to mess up egg rolls so I won't touch on that, but the pho was why I have a low rating. It's said you can judge pho by it's broth..but if that was the case I would prefer a less bland and tasteless soup, and on top of that less than a 15 minute wait for it. This place is awesome. Very cute interior, and the food is great. My husband and I tried the chicken pho and the chicken vermicelli noodle bowl. Both were fantastic, very fresh and full flavored. I also tried the Vietnamese iced coffee, which was great. ( I mean, who doesn't like coffee with condensed milk in it?) This is a new place, it soft launched on 2/1/13, but I hope it does well. Service was quick, despite the newness and our food came out fairly promptly. We were there for an hour, and the place stayed fairly full, with a good mix of students and older folks coming in for lunch. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. We saw a lot of different entrees come out and it seemed like everybody enjoyed what they got. We will be back. Probably before next week is over. The broth in the beef pho is obscenely good. The kid size pho is still huge, but stripped down to just meat, noodles, and broth. Which is the only way my kiddo will eat it, anyway. The spring rolls are stuffed with shrimp and pork and delicious. The shrimp chips were a little stale, but that is the extent of my complaints. Pro: The food here is good. My fave dishes at Viet Bites: grilled pork with vermicilli (bun thit nuong), grilled pork sandwich (banh mi), and pho. Cons: The service can be slow at times, and they are often crowded on the weekends. I made a reservation for a large group. I expected a pretty awesome meal going into it, so maybe my expectations were a bit too high, but take this for what it is. The Pho itself was really good, I got the Rare Steak and the broth had a ton of flavor. However, there was not too much meat at all, so that was a bit disappointing. My gf got the Chicken Pho and she enjoyed hers as well. We also got the sampler for an appetizer, and everything was good, minus one of the traditional rolls, which the noodles were overcooked so the whole roll was a bit too "mushy". The food itself was not the issue I had with Viet Bites. The time it took for the food to get to the table was way too long. It took roughly 20min for the appetizer to come out, and a bit longer for the actual Pho. My GF and I sampled the appetizers last night. Started with Crab Rangoon's: loved them, the Sweet & Sour sauce with chilies was fantastic, Calamari: Cooked to perfection, tender with a light crust. Could have used a lemon sauce of some type. Tacos w/shrimp: I especially liked this appetizer. Could be a meal in itself. A tasty sirachi sauce dressed the dish...nummy nummy. Fried Jalapeños: don't leave without trying them. I used the sweet & sour sauce with them. Light crispy and ohhh so spicy! I had Jasmine tea that never found the bottom of the glass. Our waiter was very attentive and knew the answers to all of our questions. This was my second visit to this little gem of a restaurant and I will be taking my friends to visit with me next time. I never thought I could like Vietnamese food until Viet Bites brought amazing Vietnamese food to Denton. This is a favorite lunch and dinner spot for me, and snacks too. They can make basically anything on their menu gluten free, and are careful about cross contamination. I LOVE the spring rolls with GF peanut sauce. It's to die for. I also love their Pho, and it's good there or to go, and good for cold nights at home. I love their rice plates, especially the grilled shrimp. If you're a fan of shrimp- their shrimp is amazing! Staff is always friendly, drive thru is easy, ordering is easy, and if you choose to dine-in the porch is a great place on a nice day. They grow their own herbs outside, and use these in their meals. When I was a kid this building was "Tom and Jo's Cafe", a long standing Denton cafe with a retro feel. After Tom and Jo's closed this building went thru several changes before becoming Viet bites. I'm so glad a great restaurant finally came in to stay. If you haven't tried it yet, and are skeptical to Vietnamese food, give it a try. I typically like all kinds of food but was 50/50 about trying this- and now 3 years later I eat it almost once a week! The only thing I'm not a fan of is the traditional Vietnamese fish sauce used on many plates, so I sub GF peanut sauce or a GF soy and shallot sauce. read more
