Was around the area for work and my wife wanted me to get her pho for lunch. This was the closest place, but the menu looked great. Wife said the pho was surprisingly good. Went back later that week to get their fried chicken plates with fish sauce, spicy, and shoyu. All was good an similar tastes, but different depending what you like. Wife surprisingly got the spicy sardine soup which she said was good. Will probably be back later to try their shaken beef, mapo tofu, and French dip. read more

Walked in on a Wednesday at 530. Hole in the wall with about 4 tables and no other customers there. The seafood pho was onolicious! Excellent broth. Pork meatloaf banh mi filled with scrumptious pickles. I didn't get dessert but my company loved the ice cream with roasted peanuts and condensed milk. Reasonable prices. Fast friendly service. I work and live near by. I LOVE their veggie pho. I am vegetarian but rest of my family is not so I am happy to find somewhere where we can all enjoy something. Came on a Saturday night and didn't have to wait at all for a table. We got our food quick which was great cause we were hungry. We started with the open faced sliders which had lots of cheese and ground beef on a taro bun. Definitely something different from our normal spring rolls app and worth giving a try. For my main I got the spicy beef soup which had the perfect amount of spicy flavor. It came with beef slices and Vietnamese ham. The noodles were vermicelli noodles but really chewy and bouncy which I enjoyed. My first time trying it and I would get it again, although I would like to try their combination pho. Fairly new spot in Kalihi and it did not disappoint! We stumbled upon this place on a random Monday evening and it wasn't too busy, so we got a table right away. Not sure if the weather added to it, but it felt very cozy and inviting! We ordered the chubby sliders as an appetizer. They are open faced sliders with some ground meat and a lot of cheese on sweet (taro, I think?) bread, topped with fried garlic and an umami drizzle. We also shared the oxtail soup, which you can get with rice or pho noodles--we opted for pho. This was very different from other pho restaurants as it had carrots and cabbage inside, but it worked and I really liked it! The oxtail was tender and fall off the bone. We will definitely be back! This was a stop we made on our way from the airport to our hotel. What a stroke of great luck! The food is simply AMAZING! The owners were so attentive and made sure everything was up to our satisfaction; I never saw the end of my water glass. Saw a bunch of reviews for this place so we had to try it. The restaurant has okay atmosphere, but after all, it is Kalihi. Parking is a bit of a challenge as this place share parking with other restaurants, and two bars near by. The rice and spring roll bowl was good, with a generous amount of spring roll. The BBQ pork was also very tasty and was not overly salty as some other places prepare it. The key here is to remember that broiling the meat concentrates the salt, so over salting to begin with is not good. Pho broth was also very tasty, light, and not over-powered by star anise. Restaurant wasn't busy at all so I was seated and served really quickly. The service was great. Another contender for my favorite summer roll on island too! My vermicelli bowl with spring rolls was yummy and my Thai tea was delicious! There were lots of pictures on their tv of meals that weren't available on the menu they gave me but I was told their new menu started the next day. I never tried this place because the name didn't pique my interest. After hearing such good reviews here, I decided to give it a try. I am so glad that I did! It is so clean and the male owner there is a class act! Great service and he is clearly a genuinely nice person! The pho broth here is really tasty and clean tasting. One of the best we've had. The papaya salad is top notch! Probably the best papaya salad I've ever had! Their spring rolls are really tasty. They don't give much, but everything is so neat and clean! I've also tried their roast beef sandwich and it was really good too! The lemongrass chicken is different from what I'm used to, so its hard to compare it. It ain't bad, but not what I'm used to. Landed and was in need of some Asian comfort food. Found this place and 10 minutes within Honolulu airport. Got in around 2pm with parking in the front and a table ready to be seated. It's a hole in the wall type shop but food and drinks were great! Only downfall is location is not in the best area. As mentioned in another review, there is a homeless man walking around and we encountered the same thing. He was in his underwear and kicked the front walking by. Seems harmless as he didn't come inside but can be an unexpected and frightening experience. But the owners were very nice and apologetic and try to ensure he stayed away. read more

We had been told by a friend that Viet Chubby Boy was a must eat spot, so when we needed lunch after running errands we decided to stop in. We were greeted immediately upon entry of this little restaurant and offered a seat at any available table. Since it was 2pm, it wasn't crowded so we had our choice of seats. The menu included pictures of some of the dishes, and included great descriptions of each item. The restaurant was quiet and cozy and our food came out quickly. The fried corn was something I'd never had before, wasn't overly spicy, and had good flavors. The broth on the oxtail pho was clear and nice, not heavy or greasy at all. My new go to pho in Kalihi. Located next to Diners. Viet Chubby has a nice and clean, well lit restaurant. There's not much seats but the food makes up for it. A must try if you're craving a Bahn-Mi is the French Dip! The sandwhich is amazing with so much flavor. It's a nice sized portion too. Comes with a dipping soup which I believe to be Pho broth! The spring and summer rolls are also great tasing. My wife thinks the spring rolls are on of the best she's ever had. The main star dish is the Pho. We had the combination Pho. The broth is a little sweet compared to other Vietnamese restaurants we go to. I like it a lot actually. They give a generous portion of meat and noodles. Serive is excellent too. Being not such a nig establishment caters to customers more intimately. Parking can be a pain depending on how the other restaurants are in that complex. Street parking is always an option. Highly recommend giving Viet Chubby Boy a try - you won't be disappointed. I had the Pho, Pork Bahn Mi, and Spring rolls. The Pho came with the usual. The broth is clean and flavorful without being overbearing and everything is reasonably priced. It came with plenty of the usual sauces, herbs, bean sprouts, lime, etc., but it also came with a garlic chili oil that adds another level of dimension to the broth that I haven't found elsewhere. Whereas other places' chili oils are spicy, this isn't about heat but rather flavor. Highly recommend a try and to just dump the chili oil into the broth. The bahn mi and spring rolls were delicious as well. The bread was crispy and the sandwich was packed full but still compact enough to eat comfortably. My mom ended up saving half of the sandwich for later as it was large enough for two full servings. The restaurant is located next to some other highly recommended places so parking may be iffy immediately in front of the restaurant itself, but there's plenty of parking near the side roads as well. I always see this place when I'm waiting for my food at Diners. Well, I finally decided to try it and I was so happy! I ordered the summer rolls and the lemon grass chicken with vermicelli. The summer rolls were fresh and made to order so the wrapper was nice and soft. The lemon grass chicken with vermicelli was also so delicious! The chicken wasn't your typical lemon grass chicken, it was shredded which made the flavor so much stronger. I was very pleased with the amount of food and the price. Parking is plentiful. We tried this place for lunch today. Located in the parking lot diners drive inn and guieb and han yang Korean also by the Japanese restaurant Kikuya. They took over the place Saimin House. I had the spring rolls and my husband had their beef pho. We were 2nd customers to sit and looking at their menu then a young couple came in sat by us and when the server came back to the tables she took the couple their order now you think they come to us No way. She took that other couple that came and sat down after us their order. I was keeping my cool. Then a family came and sat down. I said if that server takes their order, I'll be fuming and would have say something but no she took our order right after that. The spring rolls was ok but to me kinda if garlicky. You know me and garlic I like food just a little of garlic and not choke tasting. The beef pho was lots of noodles and the broth was good my husband said. I had bookmarked this place after seeing it as a hot new business on Yelp! My sister was able to get us a few plates to try as a to go order. The chicken wings looked great but upon further inspection, still had some of its feathers stems attached. The chicken was also very chewy. I was also disappointed when I found the exact same thing in my vermicelli with lemon grass chicken plate. I had two bites of chicken and couldn't stomach anymore. The chicken texture was a rubbery tough, almost like it could have been a rooster off the street. While the flavor was good, I was so put off by that texture.Thankfully I could salvage the noodles and vegetables. The sauce that came with the noodles was fishy, but lacked the salty tang that comes with that type of sauce. I would venture to guess they water it down. The spring rolls were crunchy and helped add some salt to my vermicelli dish (but that dish does not come with them). My husband enjoyed his pork sandwich but missed the mayo (possible they toasted it away) because that really makes a bah mi moist. The best thing was the Thai tea, but that also was pleasant and didn't have any depth to it. I am not sure if this was a sourcing issue or if they just use not normal quality chicken. Parking is the worst here the stalls are so tight and if it's lunch time it's usually busy and might not even have parking. Probably best to go before the lunch rush. We got the Pho Combo, Pho French Dip, and summer roll. The Pho broth was delicious, the meats were average but what was disappointing were the noodles. The noodles were hard and I wish it was a bit softer and with a bit of chewiness to it. If they replaced their noodles this would be one of my top places to get pho because they did great with their broth. The flavor of the pho French dip was really good as well. This place had recently opened up, taking the old spot of the old saimin shop that's been there for decades. I ordered the pho combination and the spring rolls. The spring was freshly made, and the Pho was outstanding!!! The broth had a deep beef bone flavoring, like It was boiling the beef shank bone with good stuff in the middle of it melted I. To the soup. It also had a slight sweetness that blended well with the broth. Usually I dint drink the soup if the pho, but this time I drank more of the soup. The meats I slide was also good too. Being such a small shop, service was on point, and felt like eating at friendly neighbors house, that server one of the best Pho soup you could imagine. I believe this store just open at the begging of July, and they are offering a 10% discount on your bill here. Viet Chubby Boy is a Vietnamese restaurant in the Kalihi-Palama area that just opened. The soft opening menu is small, but it had a good variety of appetizers, banh mi, and rice plates. I ordered spring rolls, beef pho combo, and the shaken beef. The wait time for food was long, it took 30 minutes for the spring rolls. The spring rolls tasted really good because they probably came straight to the table from the fryer. It was hot and crispy. After finishing the spring rolls, the entrees took another 20 minutes. The pho broth wasn't steaming hot, but the portion was big, and the broth smelled authentic. Their pho combo had rare beef, brisket, beef balls, and tripe. They gave a generous amount of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapeno on the side. The shaken beef was prepared and seasoned different from other Vietnamese restaurants. It was served on a sizzling platter, but it wasn't sizzling because there was no sauce on the bottom. The waiter didn't ask me if I wanted rice or french fries with the dish, so the default was french fries. The crinkle cut fries were crispy just the way I like it so I was okay without rice. The shaken beef needed more flavor and some salt and black pepper would have helped. The meat was cut into bite size cubes and was tender. I got the 15% off the bill because it was soft opening. The 3 items came out to about $50 with tip included. I split the bill with a friend so $25 per person for dinner is a good deal. I'd give them a few weeks to work on the kitchen, food cook time and staffing. I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some of the other items on that soft opening menu. If you are craving Vietnamese food and you're in this area, this place is worth checking out. Just make sure you're not in a rush to get your food. They had people picking up take-out so that might be a better option with a shorter wait time. I would suggest calling to confirm your takeout order is going to be ready before driving there. If there are too many dine in customers, it would back up the kitchen. They are in the same complex as Upscale Hawaii. There is ample parking in front of the restaurant and within the complex.
