The pho was so good I didn't have the mindset to take pictures. Ordered the combo pho. Broth was light yet flavorful. The service was also very nice and the young man and his mother? Both were attentive and friendly. The vegetables that accompany the pho were generous and fresh. I always like extra lime in my pho and they gave extra without even having to ask. Clean tables and pleasant ambiance. Only drawback is no restroom, or at least a sign that says no public restroom. But I didn't ask to use it so possibly means just for customers? Either way, worth it for the pho. One of the dilemmas I had was I wanted to order so much more. I was in need of a quick Pho Pick Me Up. I started to troll Yelp and was intrigued by this places name, Viet Chubby Boy". I just knew I had to try this spot. Establishment is rather average, seats around 20 people comfortably. I've observed a lot of what seemed to be regulars. This one regular stated how they "craved this place". To me that's a win right from the start. Ordered the Summer Roll right off the bat. These roll are hard to compete with. Just the perfect balance of shrimp, mint, and mixed vegetables. The peanut sauce they serve with it seems to be hand made or at least if it's bought isn't like any other place. On to the Main Dish. The reason I came to this place to be gone with, the Beef Pho Combination. The soup base is definitely not like the rest. It has a sweet note to the soup. Packed with flavor. The dish wasn't as full with me ants and tendons like other places. I ended up grabbing a snack from 7-11 down the road. I will be returning to try their other popular dishes. The name of the restaurant did throw us off at first and made us question whether we really wanted to eat here. Glad we looked past the name of the restaurant because the food was yummy. If you have to choose between spring rolls and summer rolls I would recommend the spring rolls. I usually like summer rolls, but after trying both, the spring rolls are much tastier than the summer rolls. The peanut sauce for the summer rolls was different. It was not the traditional tasting peanut sauce I'm used to so I just used the dipping sauce from the spring rolls and it was good. Combination beef pho was very filling and they allowed me to substitute some of the meats that I didn't like such as the tripe. Owners are friendly and service was fine. I have been wanting to come here ever since I first laid eyes upon the Viet Chubby Boy. The visage of the chubby boy called me. Finally walking into the restaurant, it actually appears like less of a hole-in-the-wall on the interior than on its exterior. I ordered the Beef Noodle Soup and the Vietnamese Coffee. I thought that the soup had a sufficient amount of meat in it and wouldn't have even been skeptical of the amount of other reviews had not mentioned that the meat servings tend to be sparse here. The soup came with a good amount of leaves and bean sprouts to add to it, and it could feed two people. The Vietnamese coffee was a pleasant surprise as well, turning out to be a sort of coffee slushee. Price-wise, I wouldn't call this place cheap, but it's also not expensive. Walked in on a Wednesday at 530. Hole in the wall with about 4 tables and no other customers there. The seafood pho was onolicious! Excellent broth. Pork meatloaf banh mi filled with scrumptious pickles. I didn't get dessert but my company loved the ice cream with roasted peanuts and condensed milk. Reasonable prices. Fast friendly service. Came on a Saturday night and didn't have to wait at all for a table. We got our food quick which was great cause we were hungry. We started with the open faced sliders which had lots of cheese and ground beef on a taro bun. Definitely something different from our normal spring rolls app and worth giving a try. For my main I got the spicy beef soup which had the perfect amount of spicy flavor. It came with beef slices and Vietnamese ham. The noodles were vermicelli noodles but really chewy and bouncy which I enjoyed. My first time trying it and I would get it again, although I would like to try their combination pho. We were in the area so I called ahead for our party of 7. It wasn't busy, but this place is tiny! Half of us arrived early and ordered appetizers. We ordered soon after we arrived. Was around the area for work and my wife wanted me to get her pho for lunch. This was the closest place, but the menu looked great. Wife said the pho was surprisingly good. Went back later that week to get their fried chicken plates with fish sauce, spicy, and shoyu. All was good an similar tastes, but different depending what you like. Fairly new spot in Kalihi and it did not disappoint! We stumbled upon this place on a random Monday evening and it wasn't too busy, so we got a table right away. Not sure if the weather added to it, but it felt very cozy and inviting! We ordered the chubby sliders as an appetizer. They are open faced sliders with some ground meat and a lot of cheese on sweet (taro, I think?) bread, topped with fried garlic and an umami drizzle. We also shared the oxtail soup, which you can get with rice or pho noodles--we opted for pho. This was very different from other pho restaurants as it had carrots and cabbage inside, but it worked and I really liked it! The oxtail was tender and fall off the bone. We will definitely be back! Food & service always on point! Cashier asked how we were doing when we arrived , which doesn't happen too often especially with younger people. And when you order takeout, they're kind enough to open the door for you when your hands are full. We ordered the beef pho combo, vermicelli with spring rolls & bbq pork and pho French dip sandwich. Saw a bunch of reviews for this place so we had to try it. The restaurant has okay atmosphere, but after all, it is Kalihi. Parking is a bit of a challenge as this place share parking with other restaurants, and two bars near by. The rice and spring roll bowl was good, with a generous amount of spring roll. The BBQ pork was also very tasty and was not overly salty as some other places prepare it. The key here is to remember that broiling the meat concentrates the salt, so over salting to begin with is not good. Pho broth was also very tasty, light, and not over-powered by star anise. My vermicelli bowl with spring rolls was yummy and my Thai tea was delicious! There were lots of pictures on their tv of meals that weren't available on the menu they gave me but I was told their new menu started the next day. It is so clean and the male owner there is a class act! Great service and he is clearly a genuinely nice person! The pho broth here is really tasty and clean tasting. One of the best we've had. The papaya salad is top notch! Probably the best papaya salad I've ever had! Their spring rolls are really tasty. They don't give much, but everything is so neat and clean! I've also tried their roast beef sandwich and it was really good too! The lemongrass chicken is different from what I'm used to, so its hard to compare it. It ain't bad, but not what I'm used to. Landed and was in need of some Asian comfort food. Found this place and 10 minutes within Honolulu airport. Got in around 2pm with parking in the front and a table ready to be seated. It's a hole in the wall type shop but food and drinks were great! Only downfall is location is not in the best area. As mentioned in another review, there is a homeless man walking around and we encountered the same thing. He was in his underwear and kicked the front walking by. Seems harmless as he didn't come inside but can be an unexpected and frightening experience. But the owners were very nice and apologetic and try to ensure he stayed away. read more

We had been told by a friend that Viet Chubby Boy was a must eat spot, so when we needed lunch after running errands we decided to stop in. We were greeted immediately upon entry of this little restaurant and offered a seat at any available table. Since it was 2pm, it wasn't crowded so we had our choice of seats. The menu included pictures of some of the dishes, and included great descriptions of each item. The restaurant was quiet and cozy and our food came out quickly. The fried corn was something I'd never had before, wasn't overly spicy, and had good flavors. The broth on the oxtail pho was clear and nice, not heavy or greasy at all. AMAZING! Its a little hole in the wall and doesnt look great on the outside, but the inside is super warm, clean, and inviting. The dining area is a good size and filled with the aroma of their cooking. We had the seafood pho, wonton noodle soup, and beef combination pho. For appetizers we had summer and spring rolls. The summer rolls were fresh and made to order so the wrapper was nice and soft. The lemon grass chicken with vermicelli was also so delicious! The chicken wasn't your typical lemon grass chicken, it was shredded which made the flavor so much stronger. I was very pleased with the amount of food and the price. Parking is plentiful. We tried this place for lunch today. Located in the parking lot diners drive inn and guieb and han yang Korean also by the Japanese restaurant Kikuya. They took over the place Saimin House. I had the spring rolls and my husband had their beef pho. We were 2nd customers to sit and looking at their menu then a young couple came in sat by us and when the server came back to the tables she took the couple their order now you think they come to us No way. She took that other couple that came and sat down after us their order. I was keeping my cool. Then a family came and sat down. I said if that server takes their order, I'll be fuming and would have say something but no she took our order right after that. The spring rolls was ok but to me kinda if garlicky. You know me and garlic I like food just a little of garlic and not choke tasting. The beef pho was lots of noodles and the broth was good my husband said. I had bookmarked this place after seeing it as a hot new business on Yelp! My sister was able to get us a few plates to try as a to go order. The chicken wings looked great but upon further inspection, still had some of its feathers stems attached. The chicken was also very chewy. I was also disappointed when I found the exact same thing in my vermicelli with lemon grass chicken plate. I had two bites of chicken and couldn't stomach anymore. The chicken texture was a rubbery tough, almost like it could have been a rooster off the street. While the flavor was good, I was so put off by that texture.Thankfully I could salvage the noodles and vegetables. The sauce that came with the noodles was fishy, but lacked the salty tang that comes with that type of sauce. I would venture to guess they water it down. The spring rolls were crunchy and helped add some salt to my vermicelli dish (but that dish does not come with them). My husband enjoyed his pork sandwich but missed the mayo (possible they toasted it away) because that really makes a bah mi moist. The best thing was the Thai tea, but that also was pleasant and didn't have any depth to it. I am not sure if this was a sourcing issue or if they just use not normal quality chicken.
