Restaurant was 3/4 full, which was a good first Impression.Water glasses were filled along with silverware brought out by Mai.Kevin took our orders of a Vietnamese ham & pork sandwiches Hoisin & Sriracha sauces offered & mixed together were a perfect combination to the sandwiches. Kevin & Mai work as a good team, providing excellent customer service & doing a great job insuring all customers are happy! Their menu provides many good options for all taste. The Bahn mi sandwiches were perfectly toasted & filled with quality veggies & meat. The order of French Fries came out temperate Hot & not salted, accompanied with catsup in a glass plate.The Lunch was perfect for what we wanted & look forward to trying other dishes! This is my husband and I's go to for pho. It's the broth for me! We both get their chicken pho and it hits the spot every single time. We also love their chicken curry udon and grilled chicken vermicelli. Drool! They have quite a large menu with unique items I haven't seen at other Vietnamese restaurants. Restaurant is clean and cozy. The staff is always so friendly and kind. Great customer service! Even our picky son enjoys the fried fish balls and grilled chicken rice plate with sunny side up egg. I need to go back to try more dishes and be more complete with my review. I ordered a Spicy Beef Soup that was so delicious and a fried chicken plate to share with my son and his wife at home. I was the only one that liked the spice in the soup. It was very tasty and the chicken wasn't what I was hoping for but it was ok. Husband got shaken beef plate and he said it was ok. Found Viet Chubby Boy from looking up a good Vietnamese place to go to. I was pass this place from time to time but never knew it was there... let alone all the eating places in that plaza. So many to choose from! From the outside it doesn't look like much, but when you go in it's a cute homey feeling with a cleanliness atmosphere. It's a very small place with less than 10 tables, but when we went about 6pm on a Friday it wasn't crowded. I really wanted a vermicelli bowl with tofu & spring rolls but upon looking at the menu, they didn't have that combo. So I asked the lady if they were able to do that & she was very nice and had them make it for me. The tofu was really spicy but so flavorful! The noodles are the thicker ones which I don't mind but I do usually like the thinner ones. The bowl is very hearty and filling. My friend got the pork & spring roll vermicelli bowl and also ordered the steamed egg. They forgot about the egg but the lady was very apologetic. It comes with the fish dipping sauce and she asked if we wanted more. I was tempted to get their fresh lilikoi drink but held back since we were going to get boba after. A hidden gem in Kalihi with great Vietnamese options! If you are ever nearby I would recommend stopping by! Located in a strip mall with some other popular eateries like Guieb, this place is hidden but always pops up on my yelp when I'm searching in the area. I've been here twice and had great dishes both times! First time I tried the lemongrass tofu bun (noodles) with a side of spring rolls. Loved how much flavor the tofu had and the noodles were super filling! Spring rolls are a bit on the pricey side for a side order, but so is everything these days. During my second visit, I tried their pho which comes topped with a variety of meats and of course comes with the normal veggie toppings. The broth is SO good - very flavorful and has a lot of depth. It looks a bit light but it has so much flavor! The portion size is very generous and was enough for two meals for me. Although the area is not the nicest, during lunch its often crowded and you won't have to worry. The restaurant is clean inside and the owners are very nice. During lunch, food comes fast and both times I've been there almost all of the tables filled up as we were eating. read more

Anyway, we were second to be seated. Menus and water were served. While waiting to order, another couple sat on the table next to us. A few minutes after they got their order taken. I looked at my wife, and both of us started shaking our heads. We did place our order as the restaurant filled up. I ordered the Beef Pho, and she ordered the spring rolls. The Pho had a very flavorful soup broth. The other ingredients were on par with other Pho shops. The spring rolls came four to an order, but cut in half, leaving you eight pieces. 8-10-22 We came cuz hubs saw this restaurant's write up in today's Crave newspaper insert. There are 7 dine in tables and one was occupied when we entered. Saw two people picking up phone orders and 2 people ordering at the counter. Sweet female employee who is a co- owner with her friend was working the front taking orders, refilling water and bringing out our food. I have been a Vietnamese food lover for quite some time but today I was really craving some. I ordered takeout and got a Banh mi sandwich and the beef pho and a Vietnamese coffee to drink. I asked them to make the coffee more on the sweeter side and when I got to try it it was PERFECT, they even asked me if it was sweet enough or if I wanted it sweeter. My sandwich was BOMB and I decided to eat there since they gave us ice water when we were waiting. The service was so good and my sandwich was so good I ordered another sandwich to go Lol. This was a good find because of the: *free parking, *10 percent off for the opening month of July, And *FREE Thai Tea with check in on the Yelp app! At 5pm, we had our choice of tables. Location was the former space of Old Saimin House. Food was just okay for me. The vermicelli noodles seemed rather soft like it was overcooked. This place kept popping up on Yelp and I needed to be in the general area, so I stopped in for a quick dinner. I used the free Thai iced tea offer--the tea was well flavored, pretty much as expected, although it could have used a little less cream (it was a little too pale an orange). The shaken beef was pretty good. The beef pieces had a little more fat than I consider ideal, but most of the chunks were fine. The sauce was very good, a nice mix of salty and sweet and a little bit spicy, with plenty of onions and peppers that weren't over cooked and we're still crispy. The parking lot was full but there was plenty of street parking just outside the lot. I wish the menu had a little more variety--maybe it's sparse because the place is new. For example, they only had one option for beef pho, a combination pho, and I don't necessarily want all three forms of beef in my pho, so I feel like I can't get pho here. But if you like combination beef pho (rare steak, brisket, and meatballs) then you're in luck! read more

We tried this place on a whim because it was close to home and open late. it's small and unassuming with reasonable seating. The place was really clean and the staff were very friendly and attentive. It did not take long to order after we were directed to our seats as we were entering the restaurant. Our food was delivered quite quickly. The staff provided plates and an extra bowl for sharing along with our utensils which included both forks and chopsticks which I thought was considerate. The bun bo hue was tasty and maybe a little saltier than I was expecting. The slices of brisket were pretty sizable and plentiful. The steamed pork were also nicely portioned and incredibly tasty. I did miss not having beef balls or tendon in the soup which I usually find in most versions. The portions more than made up for it! The soup was reasonably spicy and I only added one slice of jalapeño to up the kick slightly. My husband ordered his standard spring roll. These guys were incredibly crispy and tasty! The sauce was one of the best that I have enjoyed and we have had a lot of spring roll orders over the last 20 years together. It came with 8 rolls that were quickly enjoyed by the spouse and I got to snag one to enjoy as well. Although we didn't order it, it was a pleasant surprise to see french fries on the menu which is an option for the shaken beef entree. The have a sides menu at the back of the menu book that included not just extras for your plate but also a soup made of pho broth and beef ball. Next visits, I would like to try their French Dip and a vermicelli plate with grilled pork and spring rolls. I think the husband may try the shaken beef with fries. The Chubby Boy Salad looks interesting as well. Its refreshing to find a vietnamese restaurant that has the standard fare and a new take on familiar entrees. They also had a variety of dessert options to round off your meal: Although we didn't get anything, another customer ordered it for their table. Stopped by pretty late on Saturday night and luckily they were still open! We landed in Honolulu and were just looking for a decent food spot before going to our hotel. I ordered the sliders, which were deliciously smoky with a hint of sweetness thanks to the sauce. I also ordered the vegetable pho. It was chock full of veggies, which I really appreciated. There was enough for 2 portions for me, or maybe a large portion for an especially hungry customer. The service was great! The pho was so good I didn't have the mindset to take pictures. Ordered the combo pho. Broth was light yet flavorful. The service was also very nice and the young man and his mother? Both were attentive and friendly. The vegetables that accompany the pho were generous and fresh. I always like extra lime in my pho and they gave extra without even having to ask. Clean tables and pleasant ambiance. Only drawback is no restroom, or at least a sign that says no public restroom. But I didn't ask to use it so possibly means just for customers? Either way, worth it for the pho. One of the dilemmas I had was I wanted to order so much more. I was in need of a quick Pho Pick Me Up. I started to troll Yelp and was intrigued by this places name, Viet Chubby Boy". I just knew I had to try this spot. Establishment is rather average, seats around 20 people comfortably. I've observed a lot of what seemed to be regulars. This one regular stated how they "craved this place". To me that's a win right from the start. Ordered the Summer Roll right off the bat. These roll are hard to compete with. Just the perfect balance of shrimp, mint, and mixed vegetables. The peanut sauce they serve with it seems to be hand made or at least if it's bought isn't like any other place. On to the Main Dish. The reason I came to this place to be gone with, the Beef Pho Combination. The soup base is definitely not like the rest. It has a sweet note to the soup. Packed with flavor. The dish wasn't as full with me ants and tendons like other places. I ended up grabbing a snack from 7-11 down the road. I will be returning to try their other popular dishes. I have been wanting to come here ever since I first laid eyes upon the Viet Chubby Boy. The visage of the chubby boy called me. Finally walking into the restaurant, it actually appears like less of a hole-in-the-wall on the interior than on its exterior. I ordered the Beef Noodle Soup and the Vietnamese Coffee. I thought that the soup had a sufficient amount of meat in it and wouldn't have even been skeptical of the amount of other reviews had not mentioned that the meat servings tend to be sparse here. The soup came with a good amount of leaves and bean sprouts to add to it, and it could feed two people. The Vietnamese coffee was a pleasant surprise as well, turning out to be a sort of coffee slushee. Price-wise, I wouldn't call this place cheap, but it's also not expensive. The name of the restaurant did throw us off at first and made us question whether we really wanted to eat here. Glad we looked past the name of the restaurant because the food was yummy. If you have to choose between spring rolls and summer rolls I would recommend the spring rolls. I usually like summer rolls, but after trying both, the spring rolls are much tastier than the summer rolls. The peanut sauce for the summer rolls was different. It was not the traditional tasting peanut sauce I'm used to so I just used the dipping sauce from the spring rolls and it was good. Combination beef pho was very filling and they allowed me to substitute some of the meats that I didn't like such as the tripe. Owners are friendly and service was fine. Friendly staff with casual dinning atmosphere. They offer many fusion dishes, so I wanted their oxtail soup for cold, weather. The oxtail is different since there is many veggies from what I am used to (I usually get cilantro, herbs). The broth is very light with large oxtails and can easily share with another person.
