When we were 3/4 done with our main dish, we still didn't get our appetizer. I confirmed with a waiter that we still have one appetizer dish coming and he said yes. We finished our food and waited 5 mins, it hasn't came. I told my husband to just go pay and leave. I asked a waiter about our appetizer, he said the kitchen people just took it out from the freezer and it'd be 2 mins to have it. I asked if he's certain if it'd be 2 mins because we ordered the dish mainly to eat with our main dish. I told him to check if the kitchen ppl haven't started cooking, then I'd just cancel the order. He checked and the kitchen people forgot. This indicates waiter did not communicate and check with the kitchen staff when I first asked about it. Over the years, this has grown to become my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in all of Seattle. Huge claim, I know, but very fitting. My favorite dish to get here is the Com Tam Dac Biet - a rice dish with a variety of toppings such as grilled meat, shredded pork, fried egg, vegetables, etc. There's also a wide assortment of Com Tam's so you can choose one that comes with all of your favorites. I've had this dish a most restaurants in town that offer it, and Vietnam House does it the best. The combination of flavors really delivers the authentic taste you'd expect to get from the home country itself. They do it justice for sure! Tucked away on the other side of the Viet Wah Supermarket, Vietnam House is a nice little place to get your Vietnamese food fix. What is great about this place is that it is very central---you got your supermarket nearby, Chinatown just a few blocks down, and other good restaurants in this neighborhood. Parking is available here as well, though it can get crazy with bad Asian drivers sometimes. I had the Bun Bo Hue the first time I came here, which was pretty solid. This time I tried their special rice dish that comprised of the typical pork chop, shredded pork, raw veggies, and Vietnamese egg/omelette. The serving was just perfect, and the pork chop was essentially BONELESS, which is such a plus for me because I always just want more meat in my mouth (that's what she said) than bone. My buddy and I got the fried tofu appetizer, which was fried very cleanly (is that a word?) with minimal oil. Came out nice, hot, and prompt. I definitely recommend here over Tamarind Tree next door, which I have never been to and never plan on because 1) the place is expensive and 2) quality of the food isn't that great. read more

If you're looking for something simple, a home cooked meal kind of taste, stop by Vietnam House versus Tamarind Tree. After visiting both places multiple times, I prefer the authentic taste of Vietnam House vs the Americanized version of Tamarind Tree. Located right next to each other, Vietnam House is pretty easy to locate. Don't let the interior fool you! Even if it may feel a bit dingy/old, this place gives off a homey feeling and when you're hungry, food is all that matters ya? Some of the dishes I would recommend trying is the Bo Luc Lac with Com Chien (Fried Rice with Shaken Beef) and the tasty Banh Xeo (Viet style crepe). For the beef dish, this has always been my favorite. The beef is soft, tender and juicy while the fried rice complements the beef well. The rice itself is pretty tasty and isn't too oily like a typical fried rice dish. As for the Banh Xeo, it could be eaten as an appetizer (if sharing with someone) or it's pretty filling enough to be a meal of its own. The banh xeo is like a crispy crepe with meat and veggies inside. Simply break a piece of the crepe, wrap it up in lettuce and other veggies and dip the whole thing into the fish sauce. Add some chili into your fish sauce for an extra kick and voila! That's how you eat banh xeo. Prices here are a bit cheaper than the average and overall, the food is tasty and the wait is never too long. However, you do need to be a bit assertive when trying to catch the staff's attention for water and such, especially when the restaurant is packed. The prices seem to have gone up in past months (years?) and that's a little disappointing, but considering how good the food is, I'll still drop in if I'm in or around Chinatown. Yeah, the service isn't great. I knew what I was getting into walking in. If I wanted to pay more for service I'd go next door to Tamarind Tree. I was just craving Vietnamese street food and that's what I got. We spent less than $100 on 8 dishes that more than fed 6 of us. Bun Cha - it's a combo of grilled pork and fish cake. It's not traditional patties, but the flavor profile was right and it satisfied my craving 2x Banh Xeo - crispy thin shell and stuffed will beans, meat and shrimp. It's served on a platter full of lettuce and herbs. 2x combo plate - really good. It's really hard to mess up this dish if the pork chop is good and it was flavorful and tender, so this dish was a win to me. Bot Chien - comes served with pickled carrots and daikon instead of papayas. It's not the same, but it's still a good dish in lieu of the real stuff. Pho - meh. Banh Cuon - the wrapper was too mushy. This isn't just duck breast or a duck leg. And it's not seasoned or anything, it's just cooked well in the sense that you can really taste the duck and the meat texture is very tender and juicy. I enjoyed it but would not proclaim "best duck noodle soup in the city" We also had the grilled pork and egg roll rice plate, Vietnamese shrimp crepe and the Bun Rieu which is the crab and egg noodle soup. The grilled plate was decent but that isn't hard to get right. The shrimp crepe was decent but nothing to write home about. The crab noodle soup was disappointing..... The soup was watery and there wasn't much flavor. The egg and crab was bland... To be honest I didn't really see any crab. This is your typical hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurant (my favorite kind). Remember, if it doesn't have the word "Pho" in the name of the restaurant, you probably shouldn't order it. Yelp said their bun bo hue was good so that's what I got. It was good, tasty, and had every component of what it should be. A little bit spicier and it would have been perfect. Overall, this Vietnamese noodle house is pretty good, however there are a couple of things that could have been a little bit better, such as speed of customer service. Parking can be a pain even though it shares a parking lot with a bunch of other businesses. Be careful with other cars parking too close to you. The restaurant size is small, the walkways tight and crowded, so you have to come early to get a spot. If you have a table by the door, it can get pretty cold because of the draft and the door being opened/closed constantly. In terms of food, you know that when most of the customers are Vietnamese, the eats are going to be pretty good. I generally love BBH (Bun Bo Hue) because of it's spicy noodles and broth, but I felt Vietnam House's BBH lacked complex flavoring, was not spicy at all, and was more one note in terms of flavor. I've definitely had better at other restaurants, so it was a bit of a disappointment when I tried it here at Vietnam House. However the noodles with duck were yummy (nom nom). One great sign was that its mostly asian people dining in, which means its got the good good. I've visited this place a few times and it's always been consistently great! You're going to get the choppy quick "rude" typical asian service, but its very well worth it. The portion sizes are generous for the price. The menu is quite extensive and out of all the times i've explored something new, I've been satisfied. Sometimes, I would even see neighboring tables with amazing looking dishes and I've asked to order what they got a few times. The broken rice plates and the soups are fantastic, specifically the duck noodle soup. I HIGHLY recommend getting that. When we left there was a wait list and a line out the door. That's how you know a place is delicious. My parents ordered the vermicelli with bamboo and duck and the broken rice with pork chop and pork thread. Both of these dishes were flavorful and my parents finished it so quickly I only got one bit. I ordered pho because I was looking for something soup base. Pho has always been my go to and this place did not disappoint, It was good. The busboy was funny throughout our lunch. My sister was wearing a nice purse and he kept asking her to move it because he states, "please move your purse, I don't want to damage it.... My family dine at this restaurant for years and just recently, they started having the audacity to demand and forcing tips in our faces. Tipping is voluntarily based on food quality and service satisfaction, not mandated by law. This restaurant doesn't have waiters dedicated to serving particular tables like fancy restaurants such as Cheesecake Factory, etc. the workers at this restaurant only bring the food and leave you alone the entire time, so what is the tip for? We waited for over 30 minutes and eventually had to come up to the front to ask them to take our orders, the food we ordered tasted awful and made us feel sick afterwards, and they never gave us napkins or water, what kind of service is that? If the restaurant owners need more money to pay their workers a living wage, then they should include that price into the bill and not ask for more money. For them to say tips isn't include in the bill just tells customers that the owners are never satisfied even if they included tips into the total because they'll always ask for tips on top of the bill total. Restaurant owners should never open their mouth to demand tips because that will make customers feel guilty, like they're criminals who didn't pay their bill total, it puts customers in an uncomfortable situation and never want to come back, it's rude and unprofessional. This restaurant doesn't deserve our patronage, they deserve no stars. I ordered on the website 2 orders of Pho with steak and beef brisket. They tied the bag tight and said the order was correct. Once I return to my job after picking up the food , we opened the container. Wow I called the store informed Tran both my orders were incorrect we paid for both Steak and Brisket so Tran ask us to drive all the way back 3 mike to pick up just the Brisket. She refused to deliver it. Mind you we told her we were at work and could not leave again. She said I will have the manager call you on Monday no manager was present. 2 minutes later the manager called said only option is for us to drive back today to pick up brisket or wait till Monday and do not eat the food today, bring the food back on Monday and she will fix fresh plate. We ask for a refund and for them to come pick it up. She said no no delivery service. Look at there website they offer delivery. However she was not apologetic, did not care that they made the mistake and hung up the phone on us after we asked again to just come pick up their food and give us a refund . I will never go to this restaurant again. Board of health should be aware they are asking for food that they messed up on to be brought back to their restaurant to be recycle the food. However, after we got our food (which kind of took awhile), one of my friends didn't get their dish. We notified a waiter and they said they'll work on it. 10 mins later and everyones' almost done with their food AND THE ORDER STILL DIDN'T ARRIVE. We notify the front desk to see what's going on... it's literally just a rice dish. Wait a little more and decide to just cancel it because it was probably never going to come... The food itself was pretty good and cheap, but the fact that they ruined a meal (and possibly his day) for my friend just speaks to how bad the service here is, as mentioned by multiple other reviews. They don't seem to care for customer service and acknowledging problems that they caused. If you can look pass the bad service, I'd recommend coming if you have a small party where it's near impossible to mess up your order, but if you have a larger party I'd look elsewhere. It was my first time ever having deep fried been curd & shrimp on sugar cane and both were really tasty! (Don't ask why I've never had it before since I'm vietnamese lol). Meet was marinated deliciously & fish sauce completed the meal however I wish they served a side of soup like most vietnamese restaurants do when you order a combo rice plate. That would have sealed the deal and would have made the whole entree perfect. Not sure if it's really worth $11.95 in my opinion though.. Service was meh, but I came in with no high expectations.. however they weren't that busy and they never brought the extra lime my friend asked for when he got his pho in the beginning lol. Even if the food is great it doesn't make up for the disorganization, inattentiveness, and lack of or I should say no service. We flagged down someone to get seated. We flagged someone down to order. We flagged someone down for extra sides. After flagging someone down they still forgot our sides. The food is good; not better than anywhere else, but the environment sucks. The food does not make up for the poor service and you are better off next door at the Tamarind Tree where you can get better food and a better more calm environment. This location is always tough given the many shops condensed in a small footprint. Parking can be tough to find as well. I seldom give 5 stars but I really like this place. Food is good and reminds me of all the Vietnamese food I grew up eating. I always come here when I'm on the west side. My go to dish is t#49 the grilled pork chops with broken rice, fish cake, and shrimp cake. The grilled pork chops are tasty. Who would've thought that a grilled sunny side up egg mixed in with my rice would be so delicious. Sometimes we go for the pho or the grilled pork vermicelli salad. The soups are flavorful and meats are delicious. I don't come here for the service as other folks are right that the service is spotty. If you catch them on a good day they are nice and quick otherwise it's slow and not so great. Parking is a pain as it's limited but be patient and you should be able to find parking after a few minutes wait. The décor is plain and simple, nothing fancy. The chairs and tables don't match but who cares. Price is starting to go up a little bit and then I can't say it's cheap anymore. read more

My friend has been wanting to take me here all summer, telling me it's her favorite Vietnamese restaurant. I can see why! This place is serving very comfortable and homey dishes for very affordable prices. The restaurant is styled in what almost reminds me of a home dining room, which I love. I got the pork and shrimp spring rolls, and the bun mang vit, or duck noodle soup. The spring rolls were pretty good. The shrimp and pork was brought along with very refreshing herbal flavors. It was honestly a little bit overwhelming, and the flavor of the meats were kind of lost. The sauce really made the rolls, however, and was definitely the star. I really enjoyed the duck noodle soup! Contrary to what the name suggests, the duck is served separately. For the price, I got more duck than I expected, as they give you a whole side dish of it, pretty much. The duck was tender and the sauce served with it gave a great tang and sweetness to it. The noodle soup was also very nice. The broth is very light, and I saw it as a blank canvas to do whatever you want with. Having a spoonful of noodles and broth and adding some of the duck sauce to it was definitely the best thing to do, in my opinion. This is definitely a noodle soup that I think is getting overlooked that more people should try! I was full from the dish, but not bloated because of how light it was, which I highly appreciate. I came here for lunch with 2 friends around 11 AM on a Saturday in October 2017. It was pretty chilly out so I wanted something warm and comforting. One of my friends is Vietnamese and recommended this place, saying it was more authentic than the Vietnamese place next door. The restaurant was reasonably busy but we were seated immediately. Service wasn't terribly friendly, but it wasn't bad either. My friend communicated with the wait staff and ordered everything in Vietnamese, but they could all speak English too. Several minutes after we ordered our mains, my friend decided we should also order a "Vietnamese pancake," so he flagged down a waitress to do so. Our food came out pretty quickly. Two of us got a seafood pho, while my Vietnamese friend got a spicy beef noodle soup. For the 2 phos, they gave us 1 plate of sprouts and fixings, but it was enough to split between the 2 of us. The seafood pho was tasty but I think I prefer them with meat, since it's heartier--I'm still glad I at least tried the seafood though. The portions were generous; I was able to finish my noodles but not the broth. My impression was that my Vietnamese friend had wanted the Vietnamese pancake as an appetizer, but since we ordered it late, it wasn't surprising that it came after we'd finished off our main dishes. The pancake was crispy and had a generous amount of filling, but was pretty messy to eat and a bit greasy for my taste. I'm glad I tried it, although I probably wouldn't jump to order it again. It was pretty large, and enough to split between 3 people. The meal was pretty affordable; at $13.48 for my portion of the bill (split evenly between 3 people, no drinks or desserts), I left the restaurant stuffed and satisfied. This is a solid spot and one of the best for Vietnamese Food. Vietnam House is very deserving of 5 stars just for the tasty nom nom food. Thank you to my older sister for taking me here. It is my go to spot for now on, since TT is going down hill. Hole in the wall but the more reason the food is going to be delicious. I would recommend the Bun Bo Hue ($5.50 - 5.95) or any of the broken steam rice dishes ($5.75 - 7.25). You can't go wrong since everything here is delicious. Can I just say the parking lot is a nightmare? People don't know how to drive and the parking spaces are ridiculously tight. The restaurant was busy with MOST all Asian diners. Okay, ALL Asian diners (slight fib on the most part). I'm confident to say this a true hole in the wall. Don't expect 5 star service because that's not why people go eat at Vietnam House. You want good cheap eats & want to be in and out? This is the place for you. Bonus: they even take plastic. Wait for a table, sit, order & wait for food to arrive. They will bring tea & water. If you want more. Ask. Otherwise they won't automatically refill your water for you. When you're ready to pay, go up to the cashier. Otherwise you'll be waiting forever. Food is good. Authentic, but I have to say too heavily salted for my pallet. I really like the chicken feet salad, but again could use less salt. What kind of dishes can you order? Here is a super strong choice for tasty Vietnamese. Authentic soups such as their Vietnamese Congee' (chao long), Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef soup), Bun Rieu (crab noodle soup) and their broken rice dishes are better than most in Chinatown. I prefer Tamarind Tree next door but when I have to make an alternate choice due to the wait, I just come here! Service is cool and the peeps are friendly! OKAY! Forget what I said earlier about how delicious their damn BBH was. Because when I came in today to try their bun rieu.... with egg noodles... I got the rudest look stare from their server. Not only that, when I was done, nobody offered to take my bowl, give me water, or give me my bill. When I was here before, they gave me my bill and I paid. This time, I waited for over 20 minutes, with constant glances at them to show them I was done. Nothing! Not even to check on me. I'm so annoyed thinking about it because as I walk up to pay, he tells me the total. The sign CLEARLY says that they take debit/credit. There's no sign that says the don't, or that there will be an extra charge. He tells me they can't take debit. WTF? Then I scramble for cash and am unfortunately a few cents shy. He says, "Okay, We'll just take your debit." uhmmm wtf is going? I tell him I've used debit here twice and he says he knows, but there might be some hidden fee/charge on your account. Are you kidding me? Typically, businesses, including crappy asian ones are really really helpful in warning you if you're going to be charged. I'm annoyed at the fact that he gave me such a difficult time, and his service sucked. I don't care how good your BBH was, I will NOT come back. The bun rieu was good, but not as good as Tamarind Tree. The egg noodles were a bit stiff, the broth didn't have shrimp like I normally like, and it didn't taste as rich as TT. TT definitely knows how to cater to your needs, appreciate your business, and treat you like they give a damn. I don't care if Vietname House was once a tasty, delicious, and comforting restaurant, I for once would like to be treated with respect as a once loyal customer. Because of this inconvenience, I will never be returning. Trust me, I can find pretty good BBH & Bun Rieu next door, or a few blocks away. I'm sure they don't care either as they just ignored me. SMH. Yes, I am downgrading them to 2 stars. Their food is not good enough to make me want to come back even if I was desperate. NASTY DIRTY PLACE!!! COCKROACH ALERT!!! NO STAR!!! I regret ever recommending this place to my family and friends! I usually go here with my family, because of their soup selection. A few cousins recommended the place to me as an alternative to going to Tamarind Tree, which remains on my personal list of restaurants not worth revisiting. Located adjacent to Tamarind Tree behind the Viet Wah market, Vietnam House serves a mixture of authentic Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. Even before entering, my mind was already set on a large steaming bowl of Bun Bo Hue and it took a lot of convincing from my cousin to trust his judgment and order a dish not on the menu; satay beef with rice noodles. Pictures do the dish little justice, but the beef was tender and the satay broth exhibited a strong chili oil and satay flavor which seemed to absorb into each piece of meat. In addition, the rice noodles within the dish were cooked to perfection. Honestly, it is a simple dish that does not require a lot of large descriptive words to validate its taste. To put it simply, this is a traditional Vietnamese dish cooked in an authentic manner that is rarely seen nowadays even in the International District. So, if you are adventurous, ask for the satay beef with rice noodles that are not on the menu and ask for rice noodles instead of egg noodles. Following the suggestions above will instantly make any new restaurant patron an instant addict of Vietnamese cuisine. The establishment is definitely worth trying, but tables fill up quickly apparently even on weekdays. Also, the restaurant is known primarily for its rice and noodle dishes, but there were quite a few precautionary tales in regards to ordering the beef noodle soup dishes, Pho, because there are so many other places in the area to order the dish that are better and cheaper. read more
