I've never thought of food as clean looking. You can tell by looking at it that the chef cares about what he serves. He's an artist, not a cook. It tastes as good as it looks. A couple of ladies came in looking for a buffet while we were waiting for our food. They glanced over the one page menu and left, saying they weren't hungry after all. Originally, I went her once a week during covid and the food was excellent. I can genuinely say that everything was up to par and it was honestly my favorite restaurant in Harrisonburg (only place I'd go). Then, things went downhill as students left the area for summer. I stayed a few extra days after classes ended and I can honestly say that there was a steep decline in the quality of food. My issue with giving a poor review is that the number of positive experiences outweigh the negatives. However, I don't believe the meat was as fresh as it used to be during the school year compared to the summer. My friends and I left with upset stomachs multiple times and the meat honestly didn't taste right. Since I have given them so much business, I believe it's only fair to give them a fair review. I was looking for something light but filling for dinner and was glad to have found Vietopia. The service is quiet but good. The restaurant was clean and tidy. The food was great. I ordered the grilled pork summer rolls, vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and spring rolls, and a vietnamese iced coffee. The summer rolls were huge!! Chill little place if you're craving your viet fix but not a taster if you're really looking to satisfy your taste buds. The vermicelli dishes are all pretty good but the noodle to other food ratio is off. Wayyyy too many noodles with just a little lettuce and sprouts sprinkled on the side. The chicken is actually very very good, as is the shrimp. They roast whole chickens and then cut them into smaller pieces instead of cutting then roasting, so it gives the chicken a really tender texture. Everything's made very fresh, very fast, and is all very well presented. They also have sesame balls and pork buns for only a buck or two in addition to bubble tea if you just want a little snack. While in the area, we had a hankering for some Vietnamese so we went here! While it's not the best Vietnamese place we have ever been, it was pretty solid, good Vietnamese food. It's still better than many places I've been to in Northern Virginia, but at the same time doesn't quite measure up to the best Vietnamese places I've eaten at. I ordered their pho with everything! The noodles were not over cooked, which is usually the first thing I notice. Many, many pho places allow the noodles to sit in a bowl too long before the broth is poured into the bowl and this makes the noodles stick to each over and essentially over cook. Not the case here at Vietopia. Happily the noodles were well done. My one complaint about the soup was the broths lack of flavor. Maybe it was a bad day. But still this wouldn't steer me away from ordering the same pho again - it's just something that I noticed. The wings were really tasty! They were just very small but other than that quite delicious. The cha gio was fine! My husband ordered the bun, which he loved! We returned the next day, and he ordered the same thing. I ordered the rice with pork. Usually, i choose the pork chop but because this wasn't available, I ordered the only pork on the menu. It was just a tad bit salty but still good. The bubble tea was very good. I could tell that the tapioca balls were very fresh. Not all tapioca are created equal! Overall I'd rate this place a 3.9. Not sure why this place got such great reviews other than being really inexpensive. Came here as I was passing through and looking for a quick relatively healthy bite to eat. Vietnamese fit the bill so we stopped into the unassuming, low key location in a shopping center next to the Food Lion. The decor was unpretentious with a dozen or so tables against the walls and in the middle of the space. The bathrooms were relatively clean though nothing fancy. Almost got stuck in the bathroom because of a a broken lock haha Anyways, we ordered a variety of things ranging from the lunch special consisting of fried rice and chicken, a banh mi, the beef stew, and beef pho. Im admittedly a little picky when it comes to Vietnamese since there are some killer options in NYC where I live. But even so, the food fell pretty short here. The good part is that nothing on the menu is over $10 so you wont drop a bundle in filling up here The banh mi came out first and while the chicken was alright the bread was very lacking since it was kind of like a toasted white roll, rather than the crunchy french bread I expected. Moving on to the beef stew I was again disappointed. Rather than a stew filled with flavorful basil and veggies, it was more like a pho with some carrots.... Clear broth, a few chunks of low quality beef that ended up being overcooked, and some beef tendon which Im not a fan of anyways. Had to pull half of it out because it was mostly gristle. The portion size was decent but again, mostly broth not noodles. And the broth wasnt all that flavorful either. Though I didnt try it, the lunch special ($7) was pretty gristly and looked kind of meh. Overall definitely not a place i would come back to. i realize this is not NYC or vietnam but even so at lease make a banh mi with french bread and have stew that is stew, not pho!
