This place definitely operates as a one hit wonder for me in terms of food. I invariably order (and thoroughly enjoy) the flame wok tofu vermicelli without fail. Not only is it extremely tasty in its own right, every bite of tofu is a moment I sincerely cherish, but it's also noteworthy in the unique way they cook the tofu. The tofu is fried and caramelized in a sweet, yet savory coating, which, paired with the vermicelli and all the vegetables, allows you to decide how much sweetness you want with each bite. The service here is also extremely top notch, they're always extremely friendly and food and requests are fulfilled with the blink of an eye! My main reservation about this place, and the reason I couldn't in good faith give it 5 stars is that most bites I've tried from the dishes of friends or loved ones have been underwelming to say the least. That paired with the fact that the prices trend a bit high (even though the portion sizes are more than fair) makes me hesitant to recommend this place if you aren't planning on ordering the flame wok tofu vermicelli. read more

It's been years since I last stepped foot in Vietopia (#1). There are still lots of memories for my initial experiences here in Houston. It seems not much has changed: The food is still very sweet, the menu is still super Americanized, the place is still incredibly spacious, and I'm still giving it three stars. There isn't a lot of Viet anything going on in West U, so the many years that they've been able to operate in this space has hopefully been fruitful. The high ceilings, large tables, fun Asian decor pieces are such a vibe. I also like the big bar with the TVs in the back, the big booths, and the general ambiance of this place. It's clear the menu is attributed to the local crowd, as there's almost zero Vietnamese and lots of descriptions of common dishes. It's also written in such a casual way where in the beverage section there's a blurb that says "ice cream additional charge yummy" and random smiley faces =) in the text. There's even a section of the menu thats is called "Just Try It Something Different" which got a good laugh out of my group and I. Overall, the dishes are pricey but the variety is definitely there. My items were across the board: I ordered their stir fried beef thin noodles aka pho xao ($20), Vietnamese crepe aka banh xeo ($18), tomato fried rice (#2), a large soft shell crab ($29), egg rolls ($12), a Vietnamese iced coffee aka caphe sua da and the wok flaming beef aka bo luc lac ($26). The Vietnamese iced coffee was fire. It was velvety with a nearly chocolate like consistency and was full of sugary, condensed milk. Other than that everything was kind of disappointing. The flaming beef was overcooked and caked in an overly sweet sauce, the soft shell crab was decent, and the mussels didn't seem fresh. The egg rolls were solid, but not $3 each solid and the banh xeo was falling apart. Despite the disappointments with the food, the service from Nam was excellent. He was patient with the group and offered suggestions throughout the meal. Polite and professional is the best way to describe his service, which was very much appreciated. They charge an automatic 20% on large groups and there is a take-out fee applied as well. The parking is plentiful. I'm not sure if I'd be quick to return. I came here with some co-workers because they were saying this place had good lunch specials. When we arrived, they were pretty busy for lunch service and gave us a fairly big table for 3 people. I ordered the noodle with grilled chicken and fish sauce. We also ordered some eggrolls to share around the table! Everything was fairly delicious, but the chicken was very dry and there was way too much noodles in the bowl compared to the chicken portion. I picked Flame wok beef vermicelli out of their lunch menu as my server said "it's good, not spicy at all". I love spicy food so he said "I will ask to make it a little spicy for you" He brought me some Vietnamese pickle jalapeños with crunch, vinegar/lime flavor went so well with the buttery garlic sweet flavor of the flame wok beef. It was excellent. What impressed me most was their hospitality. I was greeted with a smile as I entered and the server came promptly to say Hi. He was both knowledgeable of their food and super friendly. He was not annoyed by me asking questions or seeking recommendations off their menu. This made my dinning experience so much better. Found 3 Dead Flies in My Soup -- Staff Tried to Gaslight Me I came here yesterday and ordered the glass noodle soup. Halfway through my meal, I noticed three dead flies--fully intact, legs extended--sitting on the cabbage. Absolutely disgusting. I was horrified knowing I likely ate some of it without realizing. I showed the bowl to a male server. He looked at it, admitted these are flies, and took the soup away. But a few minutes later, he came back claiming they were just "black dots" on the vegetables--not flies. That's straight-up gaslighting. I told him I clearly saw they were flies. His response? "WHATEVER." Then he walked off, completely unbothered. That kind of response tells me this isn't a rare mistake--this might be routine. If the staff is comfortable serving dead flies and brushing it off in front of customers, I can only imagine what's going on in the kitchen. This is a serious health code violation. On top of that, the customer service was insulting--easily a NEGATIVE 10/10 experience. I won't be returning, and I suggest you think twice before eating here. read more

There's a great restaurant that's right in the upper Kirby Greenway Plaza area. The service is friendly and attentive. I find the flavors to be fresh and delicious. I enjoy going there over the lunch hour. There is a lot of parking however, you might have to park a little bit further down from the restaurant entrance. Parking lot in front and sometimes the Whataburger on the East side I can get very full. They do have some lunch specials she might want to take those out and over. I found the service be pretty fast if you wanted to be a quick meal. Also, you can add more spices to make a more heated experience. This is a decent place to stop by for some quick Viet food! I was in the mood for pho so my bf and I came here for lunch. We got the cà phê sữa đá (Vietnamese iced coffee), gỏi cuốn bò nướng (grilled beef spring roll), phở bò tái (beef pho) and my bf got a beef rice dish (forgot which one it was). The service was fast and efficient and like a lot of viet restaurants it gives some off a family-oriented setting. Overall, the spring rolls were yummy and I loved the pho broth it was delicious on its own. The beef meatballs were weird though, the texture and flavor was off for me so I won't get it in my pho next time. The coffee was much stronger/bitter than what I'm used to which caught me off guard but I enjoyed it still. I was with a large group of friends for the Dragon Dance dinner, and we had so much fun. The performers were amazing! Different groups of dragons along with other characters moved throughout the restaurant and interacted with all of the patrons. What an amazing show. As for the dinner itself, service was frenzied and slow, but it was a crazy busy night. The servers were very friendly and worked hard to keep up with the full house. This was my first time since they moved from Buffalo Speedway to the Southwest Freeway location. I miss the old location, with its high ceilings and beautiful decor. The new location is smaller. I ordered the lychee ice tea half sweet. They use syrups so I would recommend half sweet to start and you can always add more sweetness. The food is the same quality which is the most important part. We ordered the Vietnamese Crispy Egg Rolls - deep fried pork and shrimp egg rolls served with fresh vegetables. I ordered the lunch special L35. Bò Lúc Lắc - flaming beef chunks w/onions, scallions, garlic served w/salad and it comes with an appetizer of Soft Spring Roll - chicken and shrimp vermicelli, bean sprouts rolled in rice paper served with peanut sauce. Bò Lúc Lắc was a little over cooked on the smaller pieces but understandable since not all the "chunks" were the same size. Regardless, delicious as always. Service was great. Attentive.
