We are relatively new to Viking but have had great experiences so far. We had an in depth 1st appointment/annual visit for our puppy who was 4 months at the time. They provided a lot of helpful tips for puppies and the vet and vet techs were all so friendly and knowledgeable to work with. Fast forward a month or two and we were back when our pup cut the webbing between her toes. We were able to get in on Monday for stitches, later that week for bandage removal, and about a week later for stitches removal. They took such good care of her at each appointment. I had a terrible experience with Viking. My 3 year old dog started having issues with straining to pee and needing to pee a lot. I took her in at Viking and they asked me to catch a pee sample and did a urinalysis based on a free catch (not a culture and subject to contamination) and told me that most of the time this is caused by an infection and gave her antibiotics. This was not right since they didn't do a culture and the sample was a free catch which was probably contaminated, but randomly decided to treat her (later found that dog had stones in bladder that covered 2/3 of bladder and Viking decided to treat her with antibiotics). After I was prescribed the antibiotics I was left on my own. I would call to ask question and would not hear back for awhile and when I would hear back I felt that I would get a different answer based on the person I talked to. It appears to me that they lack training on best practices, and this can be very dangerous. After first round of antibiotics the issue didn't get better. They asked me to catch another free catch sample (not directly from bladder to ensure sterilization) and did a urinalysis and culture on this sample and gave me another dose of antibiotics for 14 days and 3 times a day. This again didn't solve the issue and it appears that the results showed an infection because the sample was probably contaminated. Same situation when I ask questions I get different answers based on who I talk to. At this point, I decided to find another place and I went to North Plains Veterinary Clinic. They did a comprehensive evaluation and first step involved catching a sterile sample and when they did that they could see that my dog had a big stone in the bladder, but no infection. They put her on a diet and the stone melted on its own and problem was solved. It took them 5 minutes to diagnose her whereas Viking had wasted me about two months throwing random antibiotics at her. Viking failed to diagnose her and this tortured me and the dog by taking two random rounds of antibiotics where they could have just looked inside the bladder to see a big stone. I thought this was unacceptable on their part and very sad because while I continued with the treatments the stone was increasing in size and was making her situation a lot worse day by day leading to other issues and lost a few months in the process where all that was needed to diagnose correctly was to take a sterile sample (so they could have seen the stone) which they should have done in any case first thing. Again, I was very disappointed and this was a torturing experience for the dog and me and probably caused her long term issues by wasting time to the point where the stone in her bladder occupied 2/3 of the bladder and can damage the bladder lining and all. Viking team-I hope you use this experience to learn from it and ensure that the diagnosis are correct before you start with random treatments since these decisions have huge consequences that can impact dog and owner for the life of the dog and should not be taken lightly. read more

I am so beyond thankful we found Viking! When I got a puppy nearly 3 years ago- we chose to go to them. And it was the best decision ever!! Even after moving, we still choose to commute over 30 minutes so our dog could continue to see them. Dr. Drennen was our main doctor for our puppies first year, and now every time we book with her, we are OVER THE MOON about it. I absolutely cannot speak highly enough of her. She is so kind, understanding and validating. She is honestly one in a million. But also, all the doctors we see there are amazing. So no matter who we get, it's an absolute treat. We have recently moved away from the Portland area and one of the biggest losses for us was leaving Viking. Over the course of the decade we were with Viking, Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Hendricks, and their teams saw all 4 of our fuzz butts, 2 of them through the end of their lives. We have never been more grateful than to have been directed there after several bad experiences elsewhere. The quality of care from start to finish for both us and our pets was top notch. We cannot recommend them highly enough. For the last 5 years we have primarily seen Dr. Hendricks. Her and her techs took the time to get to know our pets and their quirks, including working with our extremely anxious dog and over the course of that relationship earning her trust. They explained everything they were doing and why. And they always stayed within the budgets we had whether it was for routine care or the many old man dog issues. I honestly can't say enough about this clinic and the team. It takes a village to raise a Great Dane and this is our village. They truly care about their clients and want the very best for them. They are honest and straight forward but always compassionate. They are helpful and very quick to reply when they know you need help. They check in on their patients and don't just send you out the door to fend for yourself, even for a simple ear infection they made sure to ask how my girl was later. When we were faced with a very scary possibility of pyometra and emergency clinics were quoting numbers I couldn't come up with quickly ($7-10 thousand dollars) I knew my only option would be to surrender her if she needed emergency surgery and pet insurance wouldn't pay out beforehand. Thankfully the Oregon Humane Society is ALSO full of angels, so they had me come in knowing my financial situation and assured me they would work hard to make sure we could afford it without surrendering her. I caught the infection early! Now we can move forward with treatment back at Viking. I'm scared to put her through surgery, but knowing how much this team loves my girl puts my mind and heart at ease, so I'm so thankful we have more time to get her treatment there. Side note: I've had more than one dog who HATES going to the veterinarian. To the point my Mastiff needed to be muzzled every time. It was an experience my entire family dreaded with him. Oregon Humane Society said they wish ALL their patients were as happy to be there as Skadi. She was frisking their entire team for cheese. Her genuine happiness to have medical treatment (even bloodwork!!) is thanks to this clinic and the hard work they have all put in to make sure it's a great experience for their patients. Thank you. Seriously. Second note: I wanted to edit this after reading some other reviews.... They actually don't have higher fees! When you break it down, the fees you pay here aren't higher because they charge more for the same stuff. You are getting more! Good example: Spay and gastropexy at this clinic for Skadi is going to run about $2000-2700 after all is said and done. Same surgery at OHS was about $1000. But I looked at the breakdown. The gastropexy cost at Viking is $200. The cost at OHS is $400. The surgery isn't what you are paying more for. It's all the extra stuff they do to MAKE SURE your pet is safe is what you pay for. The trazadone before surgery to make sure they aren't stressed out (which can cause more complications!), the testing prior to surgery to make sure she is top notch healthy for it... or to know what they need to watch for. Excellent experience from start to finish for myself and my kitten, Stevie. Scheduling the visit was super easy as was completing paperwork online. I really appreciated the follow up emails confirming my visit and letting me know the current procedure so we were both prepared for the visit. There is no better vet! We first started going to Viking Vet in 2016 when we lived just down the street. After a year, we moved to Washington and made the 1hr + drive every time! We have 4 dogs and I felt like we were there a lot, but it was 10,000% worth it! Now, we live in Seattle and trying to find a vet as good as Viking vet is impossible. Wanted to get our new kitten spayed. Have used Viking in the past for dogs and cats. Always been happy. This round, they wanted nearly 900 to spay a kitten with all the add on's. A year ago it was about half for another kitten, though that was a male and this is a female. When I called, and voiced concerns about the prices, I was told they knew they were a little more (over 4 times the current charge at my old vet in my previous home town at a very reputable large vet clinic). It's not about the money, as these are our fur babies, but seriously, was out of line. If money is no concern, and you don't mind getting gouged, here's your vet. I suggest calling around a bit, as there are other reputable vets charging much less, less arrogant, and allow more control over choices. One dose of Gabapentin was $57 for a cat under 5 pounds. I pay $58 for 100 doses of Gabapentin for a full size French Bulldog male in his twilight years. Again, way out of line. read more

They took good care of my husky (Asia) when I needed it. She died in August of 2016 but I just finally saw the card (and the clay footprint thing to remember my dog by) and it was heartfelt. We are on a treatment plan and he is getting better finally! Very attentive to the pets needs and boundaries making sure not to stress them out. They are very prompt at getting back to me with test results, answers to my questions, asking questions of their own to check on my animals, and make sure medications are doing what we were hoping and adjusting if not. There are good for taking your money, as stated by one of their own 'clerks' as we finished up our initial visit, specifically after asking if there was anything more we needed to put on the radar in caring for a new cat, they said "oh sure we can come up with many ways to take your money" I'll never forget it. This will be my second review on this place and the first was cleverly removed by their objection. Make no mistake: This vets pricing FAR EXCEEDS any competitor in the area. Are they worth it ? I dunno.. but I can say this: When the new vet contacted them to ask which treatments or vaccines our pet was given - they said NOTHING. They passed no files, and said they hadn't vaccinated my pet at all.. luckily we found the written notes on a paper folded from them during that time. She had been given blood tests and one vaccination. We were quoted $850 for standard basic spaying and vaccination procedures that cost us no more then $180 at a local competitor. read more

Just amazing! My rescue dog (who was feral) has major issues with vets. I've been to several vets with her. I tried drugs muzzle training. It was just getting worse for us both. They just performed a dental on my dog and removed 6 teeth. She wasn't happy however she survived. We set up 3 more happy visits to make sure she doesn't associate the dental with her future visits. The staff at Viking are very friendly, and clearly love animals. Our Cat has been twice now, and has been treated very well. However, I was concerned by the procedure of vaccination consent on our most recent visit. I was informed of the minor and major side effects of our Cat's vaccination after he was vaccinated, which upset me. I think it's very important to discuss this with the vet or technician prior to the vaccination, otherwise owners and pets will likely believe that there are no complications, and owners will have not been informed of recommended post-vaccination care. Additionally, this methodology leaves Viking open to legal issues should complex side effects occur, since clients like myself weren't informed and able to provide accurate and responsible consent beforehand. read more

I've been taking CoCo my bulldog to this practice for about three years. We moved her specifically to this clinic because they understand this bread extensively. They also fully understood my concerns with her IMHA condition and were supportive of always reaching out to her specialist to devise medication plans that would not impact her immune compromised system. Did not find our experience was "fear free" at all for my rescue dog with high anxiety. It was actually worse than the last vet I took him to and they weren't even "free free certified". These people do not understand high anxiety dogs, only normal dogs with vet anxiety. So take that "fear free" with a grain of salt. Then come to find out they "don't work with" places like chewy to help you get your dog's medicine AND don't even sell it themselves. Ridiculous. We will not be returning again. I've been going here over a year and won't be back. They've shuffled me around to different vets for each visit. Those vets didn't seem to have any grasp of my dogs medical history and have always seemed more concerned with charging me for services rather than my boxer's needs. For example: I came in because my dog had a lump on her chest which I was clear about from the moment I booked the appointment. When the vet came in, she proceeded to tell me my dog should be on heart worm and flea meds. If she had read my dogs medical history and prescription history, she would have seen that she is already on these things. When she didn't get me to pony up money for these, she said I should consider dental work. I reminded her that I was here for a lump on the chest. She proceeded to push dental work on me, saying that they could remove the lump during dental anaestisia. I told her I would like to know if the lump is cancerous first and asked to do a biopsy, I had to practically beg her to do her job. My latest recent horrible experience was in diagnosing a heart murmur. Long story short, they pushed for all these tests to be done, were very disorganized and unclear about what was needed. Then I went to the cardiologist who told be those tests were unnecessary and that the vet didn't even send the results over to the cardiologist in time to be analyzed anyway. I had a long talk with the owner about my frustrations and she was understanding, but I will not go back. I really don't feel this place cares about animals as they should, they are there to make money. Also, they are disorganized and cannot be trusted. read more

I have found a new vet that is changing me $250 for everything. No extra or hidden charges. I honestly don't know how this place stays in business. I took her word for it and took her in again for more vaccines and no one ever said anything about her eyes. It's been months and now another of my cat has eye issues. I drove here from Portland proper because I couldn't get in anywhere else quickly and the Veterinarians were scaring me...she had a splinter and they told me to get her into an emergency vet, stat! WELL, coming from Nebraska, we don't go to urgent care unless we lose a limb...my dog's a different story. I do what is recommended with her but I still wanted a vet with great reviews. The drive to Beaverton wasn't that bad, it took about fifteen minutes. They have a parking lot with a lot of cool businesses and the Vet (Hope) and the Vet tech were amazing. My pup fell in love with them and her knees usually knock at the whiff of a vet hospital. I thought it was cute that they gave her tiny pieces of cheese (high interest, much higher than the dry bone snacks that she sniffs and leaves at Vet centers) and they gave her a toy from a toy box (let her choose) AND they gave a free sample of heart guard. Also, Kansas didn't even have a splinter...she had a blister that burst because she plays hard. The bill was so reasonable and one other thing that really impressed me (apart from all of the love) was that they got down on the floor with her and used fresh towels as the examination space, they took her temperature-but not her least favorite way (the bum) and they were all about making sure doggies love it and feel comfortable. As I was leaving another dog came in with a big 'ol grin and her owner told me this is one of her favorite places to visit. I can definitely see why. read more

We have been taking ourFrench bulldogs and our cat there without problem and thought the care was higher priced but great! we recently got a new kitten and took her in for a well visit everything was fine. I have gotten three contradicting prices to get her spayed. This includes the bloodwork, ekg etc, that they won't do the surgery without,which some of it seems like up selling an overkill because at the end of the day if something goes wrong it's still coming out of our pocket. This feels like they are not letting us make an informed decision for our pets care.The final price that they quoted me was $890 to spay a kitten. I found this to be outrageous and when I mentioned that her littermate was spayed by frontier veterinarian in Hillsboro for half the price they suggested I go elsewhere. I guess they don't need customers with multiple pets who have already spent several thousand with them. I am just floored! I don't know how many of you out there can afford $890 to spay your kitten. I asked to speak to the owner of the clinic or the clinical manager and was told that they are both conveniently out of town at a convention. We have waited months for this appointment only to get this price surprise two weeks before hand. I do believe in getting my animals quality care but this seems ridiculous! If anyone is interested I have retained the emails. I have asked that all of our records be forward to us as we cannot afford these prices or to be treated this way! I was blown away by the care & attention my dogs received. The waiting room & exam room was clean & good sized. Also loved that the "check-in" sheets were laminated & you wrote with dry erase markers. How wonderfully green is that? Record info, type it up, wipe the sheet & reuse for next patient. The vet spent the entire exam sitting on the floor- loving on & getting to know my dogs. And WAITED for them to be comfortable with her! You don't go to the vet because it's oh so fun, it usually means your beloved pet isn't feeling well. Viking vet is a bit different for me, I'll just drop by to see the adoptive kitties they house, or to ask a question to the amazing staff (or just bug them because they're so adorably amazing). Dr.Rosie doesn't just have the most calming effect on my animals but on me too She's wonderful, not just with animals that need medical care but also when it's time for them to leave earth. Dr. Tran will love on your kittens, and she knows her stuff (I can't believe how calmly and swiftly she go them examined which meant less stressful kitties!). Dr. Brock, I can tell you that this woman works miracles ! My friend takes her pup to see dr. Brock for physical therapy and whatnot, Omg ! his improvement is amazing! Not only did he lose the weight he needed to lose, he looks years younger (I kid you not, he's jumping running etc). The techs and receptionist; they're amazing !!! The receptionists always wear a smile ! They'll help you with any question, they'll love on your pets as much as the vets and techs. The techs, what can you say about the techs, they are so full of compassion, they love and care for your animal as if it's their own, they're heroes in my book ! The care they took with our dogs, Bianco and Niko was really above and beyond. We met Viking under unfortunate circumstances because both of our dogs had to be put down within a week of each other. Bianco was a lab and lived 18 wonderful years. Niko, a mastiff, great dane mix was 15. Both of them lived a great life and having Viking take great care during our difficult time was very comforting.
