Not authentic German food. I had the Rahmsnitzel and spätzle. It was bland even after the ton of salt and pepper I added. The spätzle was OBVIOUSLY from a frozen package. I could see clearly into the kitchen as they cooked all the other prepackaged, previously frozen food ( meatballs) as well. German salad was yuck and the cottage pie which is described as "shepherds pie like," was reminiscing of baked Dinty Moore Beef Stew. Positive, the bottles German beer was good. read more

Years ago, this place was the "best kept secret in town" and was pleasant on every occasion. However, I Was very disappointed tonight. We had the Weinerschnitzel and it tasted like it came out of a prepackaged box from Sams. Veal is supposed to be tender, but this was very tough. That was this time, Last time, my husband ordered baked sweet potato and it came out as hard as a baseball. Yes, I've experienced MUCH better. Decor has not changed in decades and has gone past campy to frankly tragic. Let's face it we can forgive a lot including decor choices if the food is excellent or at least good. Sadly I found it has slipped from mediocre to barely edible. The chef and I am using the term only to indicate the person In charge of what leaves the kitchen, must have no idea of what GOOD GERMAN food taste like. Let's start with what I sampled Fried mushroom appetizer deep fried straight from food service freezer bag into the deep fryer served with a horseradish based rather tasteless dipping sauce. Apparently seasoning anything is beyond their scope of abilities. The two little loaves of bread were somewhat amusing in appearance one white and the other supposedly a dark eye ? Soft, tasteless and certainly not German. Hello what happened to the crust ? While I ordered of the Italian menu section, I did request the German style salad trio. This consisted of a canned green bean salad that again had no salt or pepper added, so essentially beans and a splash of vinegar. Sliced beets ( never had those in Germany ) and a cucumber salad with a sour cream dressing. Now I happen to really like cucumbers but this was just a runny, eatery mess. The cucumbers were not drained, no onions, too little herbs if any, no salt no pepper. The chicken Scallopini was ok, the chicken filet looked a anemic but at least the lemon butter sauce added some flavor. Vegetables were half raw and I like my veggies al dente. I've eaten in other German restaurants in what was supposed to be "German" towns. Villa Europa beats them all. I was surprised not to be greeted immediately at the front counter (Robert Irvine would freak!), but we were directed to a neat booth in a cozy dining area and immediately met our waiter who promised to take "excellent care" of us. He did! He coached us through our selections, suggesting more than I knew I could eat, and delivered our drinks and our appetizer pronto. He gave excellent, spot-on descriptions of everything, promising satisfaction of our palates, and he was so right. Then we topped it off with the most incredible Black Forest Cake. Then we met one of the owners and enjoyed an excellent visit--who suggested two other family-owned restaurants nearby. We'll be back! read more

I should have turned around when I saw Maggi gravy mix powders and fondor (mostly msg) seasoning for sale at the entrance (my mom would have turned around, for sure). This restaurant is around for a long time, and when I first went there in 1999, it was great. This is a far cry from what it used to be. First off, it's past Christmas, so you take the tree down. As a native German, I value beer. My beer arrived without a crown, not even a hint of a crown, served in a juice glass. I had a German salad, with green beans (from the can), beets (from the can) and a cucumber salad that tasted like nothing. It's so easy to make a good tasting cucumber salad. The Jaegerschnitzel was way too thick with a caked on batter. The gravy was either from a can or package, with sliced mushrooms from a can. The house potatoes had no taste to them whatsoever. I'm not so sure how they stay in business. I had the worst aftertaste in my mouth and even next morning I still felt crappy. I flew into Augusta last Wednesday night to purchase a car and drive it back home the next morning. My flight arrived later than expected and we managed to make it to Villa Europa around 9:15 p.m, 45 minutes before their posted closing hours. I always hate to show up near closing time; my time in the restaurant business left me with a distaste for making employees stay late, especially when you are one of the only people in the establishment. Despite my somewhat late arrival I can honestly say that I have never had better service or been treated with more kindness in any restaurant in my life. The young gentleman working the bar and waiting on us, Tony, truly provided the best service of any waiter I've ever had. His recommendations on both the food and various German beers were spot on, the fritters (a hush puppy like mixture of sauerkraut, breading and homemade sausage, fried and served with a wonderful apple mustard) and the Spaten Optimator he suggested were simply to die for. In a world where truly passionate servers are a rarity, Tony is a credit to his profession. After the Spaten I switched to Tucher Kristall (once again at Tony's recommendation), which may well have been the best beer I've had in my life (I include virtually every draft beer of note in Munich in that assessment). The Greek salad was incredible, very fresh with delicious, tangy dressing and just the right amount of feta. For a main course I had the Jagerschnitzel, which was absolutely the best I have ever had stateside. Don't miss the home fries as a side item, they're classic German style pan fried potatoes that, in my opinion, are much better than french fries as they soak up the delicious mushroom sauce that tops the Jagerschnitzel in a way that french fries can not. I was too full to eat my dessert there (the portions are very generous) but took home a piece of German chocolate cake that was perfect in every way: silky smooth, very rich chocolate with delicious coconut frosting and pecans. I absolutely cannot say enough good about this establishment, it makes me want to uproot my real estate career and move to Augusta! If you are in town and enjoy real, authentic German food (the menu is quite diverse and features some American classics as well as a selection of Italian food that piqued my interest) this is most definitely a "can't miss" restaurant. The worst chicken parm I have ever been served. Dry and burnt and covered with sauce and cheese to try to mask the taste. Awful. A waste of my good hard earned money. Beware. I should have known by how run down the place looks but I saw a lot of cars there and decided to take a chance. Bad choice on my part. read more
