Amazing sandwiches.!!! my husband had the club and German potato salad I had the corn beef on rye and the cucumber salad ....... My husband said his was so good. He ate the whole thing in one setting. I was fortunate enough to bring half of mine home for dinner because there's no way I would've been able to eat all that.!!! his potato salad was good and I'm gonna say my cucumbers were OK.... (I compare all cucumber salads to my grandma's so nothing ever matches hers ) the service was awesome. You ordered it the counter and they'll bring it out to your table.!!!!! the interior needs some work, but it is a super old building and I think they need to restock their candy supply, but I'm still giving them a five because of the food!!!!!!! read more

The food speaks for itself. Fresh, homemade sandwiches and sides. No doubt, worth the trip. What impressed me was the long wait in line to order our lunch as a very energetic gentleman welcomed everyone as they came in, apologizing for the wait and not once losing his cool. Between orders he refilled the ice tea pitchers and encouraging people help themselves while waiting. We sat at a table enjoying the ambiance when the same gentleman brought us our food. Hildebrandt's is an iconic sandwich shop in Augusta. Over 145 years of sandwiches and they got those right! I had the Corned beef Rueban and hubby the Italian on sourdough. The Rueben was really tasty, it could do with a bit more meat. The flavors were some of the best I've had and these are my go to sandwiches. Hubby's sandwich tasted great too ( of course we share!) bread was soft and not overpowering. I added Zapp's jalepeno chips but I wish I chose the German potato salad. Hubs had it and it was warm and yummy, bits of corned beef, perfect potatoes in a light non mayo like dressing with caramelized onions. Lose a 5 star for just for the lack of upkeep inside. It was sad to see bolted on cardboard instead of dry wall around the windows. The food is great, please give the place some TLC. Good interactions with the staff. read more

I tried to call to place a Togo order and phone must not have been working, so I drove there to place my order, currently standing outside at 11:20 because the door is locked. This the second time this has happened It's supposed to open at 11 and my lunch break is 30 minutes so I guess I don't get to eat lunch today. Came here on the recommendation of my neighbor & this place is very much a hidden gem! There is a large parking lot across the street from the building, and it's free. I loved reading about the history on this place & the family that still owns it. We got 2 sandwiches, 2 cream soda's and a bag of chips. Everything was tasty & we ended up getting another can of cream soda's because of how good it was! It is open seating. Staff was so friendly. Tip: small hours of operation. Located in the downtown east side next to a museum. Hildebrandt's are open with limited hours. I recommend checking their hours before visiting. I recommend trying out their unique bottle drinks, I still even have the metal water bottle I purchased, which I really like the unique packaging. I recommend their Reuben, but I had several of their sandwiches and I have yet to find a bad one in the bunch. The location reminds me of an old deli where people would shop to find all their household needs. The family has been running the deli and is a Augusta staple. I hadn't been to this establishment in over 10 years and I was shocked to see Mrs.Hildebrandt is still working at her restaurant. They used to have the best sandwiches! I decided to stop by for lunch, the line was a bit long, but it was moving along fairly quickly. I love sweet heat type of meals so I opted for the Sweet Heat Louis (I surprised myself because I don't like pastrami). There was a bit of a wait, but I know the quality is there, so I didn't mind. I waited until I made it home to eat because I had to go back to work. I took a bite without the sauce and the meat was tender, the pastrami taste was there as well, but I didn't want to not eat it. The wait time heart my soul. They are severely understaffed but by golly was that the best Reuben Sandwich I've ever had. The macaroni salad and sweet tea was also delicious. Update: Went here here again next day, and I must say it's not a once in a blue moon wait time. This time I was the first one in line to order when i walked in. There were only about 4 or 5 people in the restaurant and some were eating already. This was just after opening time...and I waited at the cash for TWENTY minutes being seen 4 times and not having my order taken that I just left. They are seriously understaffed. The worker here is literally the cashier, the waiter, the cleaner, the tea refiller, the kitchen helper, etc. The sandwich I had yesterday was amazing but unless you have an hour to kill waiting to get ordered and receive your food...going here is pointless. I did not grow up with an exposure to authentic German food. Sure I had the rock hard pretzel slowly rotating around on the gas station counter and I had sauerkraut on my hotdogs (but it was from a jar/can). But no brats or schnitzel or even kasekuchen. I began to sample various dishes and seek out establishments, as I moved around, serving "the good stuff." And then I came to Augusta. It was here I heard about a deli downtown that has been in business since 1879. That alone had my attention. But I heard their Reuben was the best around. Now I had to visit. This place has a simple layout; walk in the door marked Entrance and you are automatically in line. Along the wall you'll see local wares such as hot mustard, honey, cutting boards and hats. The menu remains constant, but desserts change daily. Drink options include quality ginger ale, sodas, and lemonade (no beer-maybe one day). And the team, they are the best you'll find. Luanne has been at the helm for many years and she's not quitting any time soon. She will remember your name after one visit and stop by your table to make sure the order is up to your liking. If you're lucky, a train will roll by. It's the only reminder you're still downtown while inside. Photos on the way date back decades and decor is literally antiques available for purchase. I tried to go here for lunch today(6/4/2024). It was 11:17 and they claim to open at 11:00. We saw some people inside who appeared to be ordering at the counter. We tried to open both doors but they were locked. I called them and immediately got a recording that reiterated their hours...open at 11:00. We knocked on the window only to have the people inside (customers and employees) look at us and look away. It wasn't just weird it was rude and unprofessional. How do I begin to describe this place? First of all don't walk in looking for a typical restaurant setting. It feels more like entering a book store or antique shop. Once inside, walk straight to the counter below the Hildebrandt sign. I recommend the Reuben Pastrami sandwich with German potato salad and a Ginger ale. The potato salad had bits of onion, and bacon. The Pastrami sandwich had sauerkraut, mustard and pastrami on rye toast. None of the ingredients overwhelmed the others. Instead they came together to form a delicious meal. The ginger ale was the finishing touch. This is a perfect place to come with friends or with a good book. Had lunch here on a Saturday with the fam after the Augusta farmers market. Pros: tasty food, plenty of seating, friendly service, and 10% off with a Yelp Check in! Delicious German potato salad. Cons: portion sizes were on the small side. I was starving and ordered the pork chop sandwich. The sandwich had a small thin piece of pork chop. They do say on the menu that they don't want you to fill up on bread and to order extra meat if you want a lot. I recommend ordering the extra. This is not a fast food joint. That is a very, very good thing. So please do not expect fast food turn around times. I had a rueben on rye bread with a homemade hot mustard made by a local octogenarian. The hot mustard kicked the taste of my rueben up at least 2 notches. I was wondering where the spicy hot taste was coming from until I saw the label on the mustard jar while paying. I bought a pint size jar for home. The Italian sandwich was also excellent. There is no sane reason to eat at fast food joints when there is a place nearby with sandwiches this good at such low prices. Show them some love, eat here. You can make up a sandwich also. An aside: At 11:15AM on the Friday we were on 6th St and a freight train (not a trolley) comes down the middle of it; whistles blowing.
