I've not been to Villa Europa in 30 years. I learned recently that they are having some economic difficulties, and I wanted to visit. My late maternal Grandmother took several of us there when she closed on her home many years ago and I remember a very pleasant experience. The spot is stuck time and represents the glory days of South Augusta. It still smells and looks the same. We started with the Bavarian Fritters. They were so scrumptious. I love the apple sauce with which they are served. I had the pork schnitzel with Spätzle for my entree. It was delicious. They have outdoor dining and a large dining room. Our service was great and we had an excellent turnaround time on our food and orders. I took a slice of German Chocolate Cake home. Parking is free and ample. Come support this longstanding Augusta institution that has been around for 50 years. I'd recommend some updates from an infrastructure standpoint on their end to really improve the experience but otherwise we had a great experience. read more

I am revisiting my review of this iconic Augusta restaurant. We visited on a Wednesday evening and there were only a few folks there although our wonderful server told us it had been busier earlier. This restaurant has been here for 40 years and I fear she is on her last legs. Villa Europe is like a grand dame of yesterday in a shabby mink and run down heels. The wallpaper is torn her and there, the carpet is a bit worn and things just look old yet it is still cozy and somehow elegant. My daughter lamented that they "don't make restaurants like this anymore". Our waited predicted that the place would most like close by June. He said the building is too costly to maintain. It's a shame because this is our go to for German cuisine after having some negative experiences at the other German restaurant in the area. We did notice that they are no longer selling alcohol but fo offer some alternative options. As we always do we had German fare although Italian and American are offered. My daughter chose the braised pork with a mushroom cream sauce served with spaetzle and german potato salad. She declared it very tender and tasty. I had my perennial favorite Jaeger schnitzel with brown mushroom gravy and roasted red potatoes. I also had a nice side salad with excellent blue cheese dressing. Mom got the sampler platter with home fries and had to carry half home with her. Over all everything tasted great and the service was top notch. I hope to make it back before the doors close for ever. Community staples seem to suffer the disease of be unable to exhibit change or update their presence to be able to cater to their community. It seems that Villa Europa suffers from that because it is a legacy establishment. Looking on Yelp, the pictures are deceiving because the exterior looks like it just opened and new looking but upon arrival, it's looking dilapidated. Upon entry, it's dark, dated, and looks very kitschy. Considering it's owned by the original owner, the food is definitely dated and is in desperate need of an update. The ceiling tiles are on their last leg, a paint job is needed, the tables and seats all need an overhaul. The whole place needs an update. For Germanic cuisine, I don't know what Augusta offers, but there needs to an update because either everything was too sour or too salty. I had the Sauerkraten with Spaezal and the flavor was both too sour and salty. The meat was marinated but it wasn't tender. This was like eating a leather sole. A salty sour leather sole. The spaezal didn't help as it was bland. Mixing the spaezel with the marinade didn't help as now it just offered a different texture but the flavor was still salty and sour. My mom had the Zigeunerschnitzel which was a better option that I should've gotten as it was more balanced in flavor but that's not saying much as it was still salty. The only highly was the side salad and it was just a generic house salad which should say a whole lot. All in all, it seems the owner who is in her 80s seems to be losing her sense of taste or memory and everything just seems to be extra salty or sour which is unfortunate because German food is so far and few in between and it's a shame that the area this place is based out of is also running down. If they had an update in their flavors and their interior, it would bring in many more people into the place to bring many more to their joint and enjoy Germanic food! read more

So sad... Enjoyed this place 15 years ago while stationed at Eisenhower. Was excited to see that it was still around while visiting here after all those years... Place was extremely run down, bathrooms disgusting and mold and growing various surfaces . Stayed only because it was a bit of a reunion and didn't want to rock the boat... Yes, We have been here numerous times. This time we decided to try a couple of different things to eat. We made reservations as always. I would HIGHLY make recommendations. They were busier than I remembered. I received a very nice email from Villa Europa thanking us for our upcoming reservation. Nice touch. "We know you have a ton of choices when it comes to eating out,and we're so happy you picked us. Your friends at Villa Europa." We both had the Escargot Bourguignonne. The baguettes were soft and I got three. My husband got one. So easy fix there. We both got the dinner salads. Fresh and cold. Plates were cold and nice touch! My husband then got the French onion soup (delicious) and a side order of white Bratwurst for us to share. I tried the Villa Mixed Basket with fried mushrooms, fried poppers and fried cheese. I substituted the pepper poppers for mushrooms. Again a wonderful dinner at this restaurant. The ONLY reason - ONLY reason I give it a 4 is because occasionally a worker would come running through the restaurant, saying (almost yelling), "We are behind folks". He did this numerous times and I found it inappropriate and distracting. We thought they were behind in the kitchen. It wasn't until he came through and said "awe are holding our own" and the finally "We won, GA won!" Please this is just wrong to do in a restaurant like this. If a customer wants to know, they can either look on their phones or ask the person to quietly let them know. That took a romantic dinner with my husband away. We always have a great meal here. The menu has changed a lot. It is much smaller with fewer options but all the classics are still available. A must have is the German salad with marinated green beans, cucumbers and German potato salad. We started with the Bavarian fritters which have sauerkraut and sausage with a tasty mustard dipping sauce. We sampled the chicken Parmesan (crispy and juicy), the veal Parmesan (expertly pounded thin and tender), and the spaghetti with meat sauce (rich and super meaty). The drinks were well made. I came here with my family on a quiet Sunday night for dinner. It wasn't very busy so we had great service from the hostess, waitress, and bartender. This restaurant serves German, Italian, and American options. My party stuck with mostly German options as that seemed to be this restaurant's forte. We picked most of the special items. I personally got the schnitzel caprese which I am guessing was an attempt at German/ Italian fusion. I didn't really get any hint of the Italian but the schnitzel was good and the fries were awesome! The duck was ordered out of curiosity and turned out to be really good. The only qualm I had was the crab stuffed mushrooms. I felt like the crab tasted too fishy like it might have been kind of old. This was my first time here and we came as a group for lunch. I called the day before to reserve a table. The inside was cute and looked like you stepped through into Germany when you walked through the door. The bread they serve when you sit down was delicious! They give you a dark eye and a white bread and it's hot when it comes out. I was a little underwhelmed by the menu. I didn't see a lot of the dishes I thought I would. I ordered a mixed German salad. This place is awesome!!! We just moved here from a big city and we're a little dismayed with all the cookie cutter, strip mall restaurants. But this place...! It has so much old school character. Do yourself a favor and ask to sit in the bar area. You couldn't fake this level of charm if you tried. We've had the pretzels, schnitzel, prime rib, and a few other things. I was recommended to visit this place by one of my patients, and he raved about the chicken cordon bleu, which unfortunately, I don't eat, but my partner Jeff did try it and felt it was a bit dry. I will say the portion for that dish was quite substantial, and if you were going to satisfy your protein requirement, that would be the dish. They had some starter bread that was decent, and we also had some escargo, which I did enjoy as it was fully covered in a garlic butter. I liked that the dishes came with sides (green beans, a bit bland) and choice of soup (potato, cream of asparagus, or some meat dumpling soup) or salad either tossed or german. I chose to do the cream of asparagus, which was fine. For my main course, I got the salmon and shrimp veloute, which I thought was ok. The salmon was a tad dry, which means they are consistent, but the shrimp was decently cooked. The veloute sauce helped the dryness a tad. Service was standard, I think they didn't overly take too much time nor were they too pushy. It is located in a very strange part of the street, so the building is odd looking from the outside, but the inside is a bit moody and cozy with many rooms. I think they have the makings of a great local restaurant. However, I may have come on a day they were busy, and the food fell short on the quality I expect when I eat out. I might try it again if someone else suggests it, but I don't think I will voluntarily go without incentive. read more

We had our office Christmas dinner here. This restaurant is much more spacious and than it appears and accommodates parties well. The interior was quite dated though. The potato soup was some of the best I've ever had, appetizers were great and it was a pleasant surprise that they have a full bar I had the chicken parmigiana and overall, I thought it was just okay. I am 36 years old and have been eating here for as long as I can remember. Some of my earliest memories are in this restraunt.. For me its all about the escargot.. by far the best I've ever had in my life and I try them any time I see them on a menu. I also love the schnitzel, some times I get the pork and sometimes I get the veal.. although I must say I think the pork is better. I would love to give 5 stars but the dingyness of the interior just won't allow it. The building is definitely old and tired.. the back room is even missing the carpet now.. the same murals I remember from 30 years ago and so on. First impressions are important and the exterior and parking lot of Villa Europa need attention--some landscaping and a coat of paint. The good news is that the food was very good and overcame the negative first impression created by the exterior. The asparagus soup was and the homemade breads were great. I was very happy to find a Gypsie schnitzel on the menu. The wine list contains some gems at very reasonable prices. If you like German or Austrian food, you need to try Villa Europa. read more

My server was very helpful in describing the styles and preparations of the dishes. And recommended what were top dishes ordered. All dishes were nicely ample portions , fresh tasting and delicious. I noticed my table ate literally everything, I myself had to get a dog bag for the main entree I was so full...and didn't want to stuff. Had the escargot and onion soup combo. Delicious. Snails were tender and perfect cup of oniony broth with crostini and lovely melted cheese. Had the jagerschnitzel. Breaded fried pork with brown mushroom sauce. Also, ordered the German potato salad warm. Delish. I could do this dish again. However, I would love to try the fried pork loin and combine with the white sauce and housemade spatzel. ( remind me to add mushrooms) I just love that Everthing I ate and tried my friends' dish tonight were perfectly seasoned and full of flavor that I don't NEED to add salt. Me and a friend came here after church about 2 weeks ago I believe and decided to give this place a try as well since he's never been here before and I've always wanted to try this place out myself. It didn't take us long to get a seat, but it did for our food. We estimated it took them about 20 minutes to bring our food to our table. In his words. a bit dsyfunctional and it wasn't that busy at all so it shouldn't have taken that long at all. But overall, we enjoyed it. He had the panschnitzel and I had the chicken rice soup with the lasagna. Lovely place just needs to work on service a bit. read more
