I took my family for the first time to Mexico City. Friends had recommended Villa Maria because it was upscale, but not to the point you would not take the kids, and provides an ample menu for all tastes. The restaurant did not disappoint. The food was appealing to the eyes and the taste buds. Service is superb. Waiters were there at all times, even if you stood up and your napkin needed to be refolded. The restaurant is well decorated, with minor stereotypical Mexican flare, and gorgeous plates and glasses for every dish and drink. When we went (twice) they had live music. Here's the deal: I've been here a million times. Not because I'm a particular fan, but because it's a tourist trap and I have a lot of friends and co-workers who come to Mexico City regularly enough where I find myself here at least once a month. What they're famous for: the margaritas. They're enormous. And for about $130 pesos you can't beat the price. That said, they're made to taste like American margaritas (with sour mix and not natural lime juice like most authentic Mexican restaurants in Mexico would serve). Inevitably, I end up ordering one, but always have to ask either for a second shot of tequila or mezcal or a whole lot of ice so it's not so sweet. The food is just okay. I usually get the pavo en mole negro (turkey in black mole), but there are far better restaurants to get authentic Mexican cuisine. That said, if you find yourself here it's likely for the margaritas and the ambiance, which is a lot of fun thanks to the endless array of quotes on the wall, and the mariachis, who will serenade your table. read more

My cousin and I decided to try this restaurant as one of her friends had been here not too long ago. We made a reservation online just in case and when we arrived, a few hostesses were at the front. One of them took us all the way to the back. My cousin wanted to be more at the front near the Mariachi band, so we changed seats to literally right next to where they were currently playing at the time. It was very loud and hard to hear. The waiter seemed annoyed and didn't want to help us. When we asked him for recommendations, he shrugged and it looked like a chore for him to explain things. I was sick so I couldn't order drinks and asked for hot water instead. The waiter seemed bothered by that. My cousin got a Margarita drink and later she said it didn't settle well in her stomach. We ordered these: - Consome (chicken soup) - The broth was almost cold by the time it got to our table. The soup was bland and average. I think there were way more rice than the actual soup. - Escamoles with butter - We tried it for the first time and weren't big fans. - Chalupitas Ramon (little tacos) - Honestly, this was probably the better dish out of everything. The textures from the ingredients were decent. Taste was alright. We were going to order more after the first few dishes, but because of the waiter's attitude and lack of coming by to check on us, we decided to just get the bill. He was snotty and I am not sure if he will last anywhere long. Maybe he's going through tough situations, so hopefully he finds help. After Villa Maria, we decided to go to La Buena Barra, and the service there, as well as the drinks and food there were way better. read more

Really great 1st class food here. A lot of traditional Mexican food but elevates. I started off with Escamole which is essentially ant eggs. Yea, you read that right. But it was very good! Smokey and soft texture. Excellent in a tortilla with guacamole. For my main I had what translated to red snapper with mushroom casserole. What a beautiful and fun place to visit. My traveling partner asked what I wanted to have for lunch while I was in Mexico City. Frankly I thought that was a silly question. What was I gonna say???? Chinese? Lol We bounced a few ideas around and finally he suggested Villa Marìa. It wasn't far from where we were visiting, and if you know anything about México City, being close by is a big plus. We got there a little early and took a table in the back allowing us to watch the door. We ordered fried chicken skin tacos as an appetizer, steak tacos and pumpkin flower soup as the main dish. I really enjoy chicken skin but this was the first time i've had it prepared like pork rinds. They were presented in soft corn tortillas, like a taco. I had to add a lot of salsa to make up for the lack of flavor. The pumpkin flower soup was divine. It had a silky cream base and a flavor that is hard to explain. I would say that it was a cross between potato and corn soup. The steak tacos were out of this world. They were seasoned perfectly and were served with cilantro, fresh onions, chopped jalapeños, pico de gallo, and several house salsas. I found out that there are several of these restaurants in Mexico City and each one delivers great service and amazing food. I can't wait to come back again. read more

We came knowing it's a tourist & locals trap, so I knew food would be overpriced & not as tasty as a great steet taco stand. So I suggest come here already fed & just order drinks & appetizers/desserts, which will still ring you up $16-20usd p/p. But it's a steal thanks to the Mariachi show! They don't just stand in 1 spot, they are roaming around the entire time, serenading tables, photo ops, & best of all FREE song requests! Most restaurants charge you for song requests, so this is a Big deal. We went on a Friday night: 8-9pm Huapangos from Veracruz & 9-10pm six piece Mariachi. Their official photos w/wooden frame are $6usd, which is worth it if they got a good shot. The -1 star is precisely bc of the food price vs flavor situation. We had the mini gorditas (3) & Chile relleno. The Chile had too many flavors going on at once, but that is not my type of dish anyways, but my guest loved it since it is their style. My gorditas didn't have enough filling so they were very bland. I will definitely be back before I leave town, but I'll try their 2nd location in Santa Fe & order other apps to compare. read more

In this area of town and for a true Mexican food experience this is the choice. Make sure to tell them it's your birthday for a special treat! So many more menu options for entrees and appetizers than I was expecting. We started with a tequila in a sniffer and I enjoyed immensely. I had cheap tequila in mind! I went to Villa Maria with a big group for a business dinner. It's a huge restaurant with many rooms and two floors. There were a lot of signs on the walls in Spanish that were apparently funny sayings. It seems like a place that caters to big groups as I saw many such groups. We were seated at a big round table upstairs on a semi-enclosed porch. It was nice setting. Based on the recommendation of someone else in our party, I started with a ginger margarita. I wasn't too impressed. I have to first say that during my visit to Mexico City, I'd gotten used to mostly drinking tequila and mezcal straight up or having margaritas on the rocks. The ginger margarita was frozen. It tasted fine, pretty strong on the ginger (which I like), but not really what I wanted. Later in the meal, someone ordered me a tamarindo margarita, which again, was interesting for the tamarind, but not my favorite margarita. I've never seen margaritas in the US with these types of flavors; usually just sweeter things. For appetizers, the group insisted that I had to try to 'traditional' Mexican specialties - gusanos (I think that's the correct word, fried maguey worms, the ones you find in mezcal) and escamoles (ant eggs). The worms were crunchy and not squishy inside, like you might fear. They were good dipped in guacamole. You just have to get over the fact that you're putting a caterpillar in your mouth! Similarly, the escamoles were very tame to eat. You roll them up in a tortilla, optionally with some salsa. They are kind of creamy and have a cheese taste. I enjoyed both of these specialties. They weren't exactly on my wish list but I'm an adventurous eater and glad I had them. For my entree, I order cochinita pibil (achiote marinated porked baked in a banana leave). It was very good but not quite as tender as I've had before. It was shredded so I'm guessing it was cooked in large batches, then shredded and reheated for individual servings. At other restaurants in Austin, it's typically large chunks of pork that you shred yourself. At any rate, I enjoyed it enough to finish it off in a couple of tacos! To finish, I ordered flan de queso. This was not a creamy flan but was kind of crumbly because of the addition of cheese. It was excellent. I also had a cafe de olla. I didn't pay so I can't say anything about the price. The service was very good. We also had some mariachi entertainment. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Villa Maria. read more

We also gave the rib eye tacos a try, and they were delicious, however very overpriced (8 tacos for 32$) Overall, Villa Maria was chaotic and unorganized. Service needs a lot of improvement. The place was PHE- to the- No- to the- Menal (Phenomenal)!!!!! We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked in, and they accommodated an extra person without batting an eyelash. They sat us in the back, which had a tv with music videos, that i rather enjoyed it (my boo Nicky Jam was on) The food was REALLY GOOD, and the Margaritas were huge. Now- I may be a little biased bc Margaritas scarred me for life (that one time in May 2015) but i didn't find them that good. Yes, they are huge and fun to take pictures with. But my Mango Margarita tasted like nothing, the tamarindo looked like shit, and the classic on the rocks was too strong. I ended up switching to Lychee Martinis which were AMAZING! I HIGHLY recommend. My coworkers got the enchiladas and said they were really tasty. The initial chips are ehhhh okay but their sabana de res is DELICIOUS! We also ordered white rice and platanos maduros, trust me I KNOW good ones, and these were up to par! I was pleasantly surprised! Yo, but can we talk about the Desserts! We got the churros which were sooooo good!!!! Vanilla icecream which tasted superrrr creamy! And the chocolate lava cake which my coworker loved. Food was just amazing! Gwtting here was a little of a niggtmare because there is a lit of traffic in the area. We were not able to get any spot near the restaurant. So we left the car to the valet parking. They were really busy and we waited a couple of minutes for another guy. There was no room for our car in that little space they had so they took the car elsewhere. I'm pretty sure they would park it over the street but at least we won't miss our reservation ;) We waited a few minutes to get a table. That wasn't the problem because I was really excited to be in this restaurant. I have found it super mexican with the music, food, party, building, lication, etc. So when we went inside, we could see all of this. The decor was mexican and people were having a good time. They took us upstairs to a very little table for 2. I usually hate tables over the idle where everyone passes by, but I hung on this time because it was super crowded. We ordered everything we could because we wanted to try everything and boy it was a good idea! We ordered also flavoured margaritas. They are awesome!!! Try various, they are worth it!! Service was a little slow but courteous. Then, the music started. It was a real party in the place!!! Mariachi was singing and it was great! The only problem is that I could listen to anything my party was saying. Probably not the best place for a date but for a party hahaha. I would them all again but note the seafood one is I loved the two queso, the seafood variety, fresh made guacamole, and the arranchiera tacos. But they were filling. So, for my entree, I only got the black bean soup. It was delicious and I would order it again. It was thin and pouted over some other ingredients like avocado and cheese crunchy tortilla pieces. For dessert I had the caramel Crepes with coconut. It was incredibly sweet and I loved it. I will order it again next time!!! The service was outstanding. We sat in the room to the left of the entrance and the TV was on showing the World Cup highlights from earlier in the day. The TV was interesting but not intrusive. The food was good. The service was lacking . It was not busy, and yet service was slow. All the servers were catering to a party of 6 (most restaurants do) but when It was my turn to get attention, the servers were nice . HOWEVER. The icing on the cake was the waiter (I believe Alejandro) came running after me about the tip, asking if I had intended to tip only 70 pesos. When I actually tipped 145 pesos. He displays the pesos I gave him, but only 800 of it, when I actually gave him 900. Then he acknowledged I gave him 900 & said ok. The tacos were incredible and the service was very good. This whole place felt like a tourist trap though. Some people liked the margaritas that are as big as your head but to me it was gimmicky and the mango margarita had an artificial flavor to it. I saw other non-Americans drinking regular sized margaritas and wondered why that wasn't offered. Our waiter kept up selling us at every opportunity. I didn't care for that either. read more

This is something that was common in the 50's but times have changed and it was the first time I've ever seen such a fee. My wife ate here about 10 years ago when she came to México on business and had an amazing experience. So much so that for those ten years she has been telling me that when we got to México together she would eat at Villa Maria. We finally made it. The restaurant has a lot of ambiance and a clientele. The house chips are unique and tasty and so is the red salsa they serve with them. We started with the Queso fresco of San Juan del Rio and found it uninteresting. We both followed the queso with the Sopa de Hongos de Maria Sabinas and that was spectacular. They bring the dehydrated hongos (mushrooms) and chiles in a bowl to the table and then pour the hot broth into the bowl. This is where it just did not meet the reputation. My wife ordered the Brochetas de Camarones a las Brasa, which she found extremely salty and the accompanying rice semi-hard. I'm a vegetarian and there was nothing there for me when it comes to the main dishes. I had a choice of salad, Tacos de Tinga de Jamaica with cheese and cream, or plátanos machos wrapped in tortilla and covered in mole. I went with the plátanos and my stomach turned. I sent them back and they were gracious enough to take them off the bill. My wife felt so bad because she had been looking forward to bringing me here for so long. I told her this is nothing she could predict but for a restaurant with this kind of reputation, they should be more creative when it comes to vegetarian dishes. We ate at Cochinita Country Coyoacan a few days earlier and they had five to six choices for vegetarians. And they weren't about cheese and cream, there chef understands vegetables and was creative. A restaurant like Villa Maria should be able to do better when it comes to serving vegetarians. read more

Its a lively restaurant with many private rooms to dine and big sitting space. The dishes are authentic and the menu changes frequently. Its one if the best Mexican restaurant in DF. Its pricey but the service is good . The staff is polite and suggests other options to choose. There are vegetarian dishes too. The location is good also and the ambience is awesome.
