We are so lucky to have such a beautiful place near-by. Since the pandemic, it has become our weekly routine to hike here multiple times a week in the early mornings. This is a very popular venue for weddings and special events especially on weekends. For early birds like us, we get to enjoy the fresh air, quietness and peacefulness in the gorgeous environment, a real treat to the body and mind. One of my favorite spots in the South Bay for a quick hike! The grounds at Montalvo are absolutely beautiful, as are the forested trails that wind up the hill and down the creek near the villa. Though there are a few different trials to choose from, they all end up crossing at one point or another. Even if you do all of them, they aren't too long and the hike tends to be fairly short. The area is pretty hilly, so most trails have a good elevation gain. Aside from the hiking, you can stroll the garden and picnic in the grass in front of the villa. They have some art installations around the grass and in the garden that are fun to look at. They also have concerts here, there is a stage outside, but I've only ever seen one inside the concert hall. They're usually smaller names and smaller shows. read more

Beautiful grounds that have been around for decades. We took a hike that was short but yielded a nice view of the Saratoga hills. Parking and entry are free and it's also got a large grassy lawn area perfect for a picnic. read more

This is a beautiful estate and gardens in the Saratoga hills residential area. It's a bit confusing as you drive up to the front entry as there are a couple drives and you need to pay attention or you will go "down the wrong road" (the entry is the middle road of the three) ...The entry is ONE WAY and narrow as you wind your way up to the parking lots around the estate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT EACH LOT as you come up to them (Lots 1-4) as noted this is a one-way road. If you reach Lot 4 and can't find a spot you have to drive all the way back down to the main road and start over. Just saying to save the frustration. Parking is free by the way. The main estate house holds conferences and events and such was this on the day we were there, so we couldn't get inside. The main lawn is excellent for having a picnic and just relaxing. The surrounding grounds have a trail that winds around with lots of outdoor art to experience. Be sure to go through the large "deer gate" at the bottom of the grounds. There is more art to be viewed in the Italian Garden. With the trails, ponds, botanicals and art it's a lot to see and enjoy. read more

I've been to this parks and recreational facility a handful of times but apparently I never wrote a review. Lol they have a bunch of different trails that lead all around this main grassy area and I like how they have summer camp programs for different age groups of school-age children also! This particular Day, my friend did a birthday luncheon on the grassy field and we did a little mini hike around the area. I love how there's some artwork around the hikes and they have at least five different parking lots you can go in, but it's all one way. So make sure if you find parking in a particular area you know exactly how far or close you are to the trail. I'd really like to see an event here since I just recently noticed they have an event center. I love jazz, so maybe I'll come back for one of their jazz ensembles. read more

I've driven by Villa Montalvo many times, as I went to school at West Valley Jr College and also my parents owned a business nearby. But, I never have been there. They were having a festival called "Marcus Festival: Future Dreaming." Unfortunately, we got off work late and headed over as soon as we could, but we only saw a little bit and walked around the grounds briefly. It's a nice venue for events, weddings, concerts, etc. There is so much history here. We only scratched the surface. Come check them out! read more

We were attending an event at the Montalvo Arts Center, and arrived early enough to explore the premises. We parked in lot 4, which is near the Villa Montalvo County Park hiking trail entrance, though we didn't actually go hiking (it was wet and muddy from the recent rains). But I did partially climb through part of the trail, enough to notice the incline, and beautiful greenery all around, as well as enjoy the views. I also got to walk through the lovely gardens that lead to the actual Villa Montalvo (main white building that catches your eye as you enter the Montalvo Arts Center, with a beautiful Spanish courtyard and amphitheater in the rear). It's used as a studio/residence for artists, and occasionally for events. I didn't even experience the entire area, and already there was so much appeal to this place. I'll be back with my hiking shoes next time. read more

Villa Green I always knew Villa Montalvo was a historic mansion turned into an event venue used for concerts, private events, and other such truck. However, it wasn't until recently that I learned it's also a County Park, as well. #shame This scenic 166-acre park not only encompasses the beautiful mansion but also offers expansive views of the surrounding area. The Good: *Trails are mostly shaded, so that would make for a good year-round hiking. *Dog-friendly trails w/ a leash (ofc). *Restrooms at the trail heads *Free admission/parking *Despite the decent elevation gain, the trails are never ridiculously steep. *Stunning views from the Vista point. The Meh: *Only 3.5 miles of trails, which could be good or bad depending on how much hiking you want to do. *Trail signage could be improved The Ugly: *Trails are a little rough-and-ready, esp after all the rains we've had lately. I wouldn't recommend bringing a stroller. TLDR: Fantastic views, free parking, and short decent trails with plenty of shade makes this a great place to get some nature therapy. It's nice, not a lot of people, very clean, a few smaller hikes to do if you're bored. Parking lot 4 is the place to park if you're just a normal visitor. The lot is not big at all. The bathroom in the parking lot is nice. Best of all, parking is free! I usually just sit around in the grass here. There are some trees for shade- which are great for naps! Beware: there's a lot of bugs! They're rather tenacious at getting on your picnic blanket. Some also bite. I don't think mosquito repellent would work since they're not mosquitoes. Bugs are generally attracted to bright flowery colors, your nose/mouth (CO2), sweet smelling stuff. read more

The views are stunning! The villa is gorgeous and I would love to see/ have a wedding here. The hike is pretty steep during certain parts but manageable for the most part. I love that they allow dogs and although my dog couldn't make it up all the stone steps, he clearly enjoyed the hike. Parking for hikers is at lot 4. read more

Wasn't really sure what to expect when we came to villa montalvo as we were originally looking for a hiking spot, and we did go on a nice but short hike there and got to wander on the grounds and check out the love temple and the gardens there. They have a big well kept lawn area that would be good to set up a picnic or even just to sit and lounge at. We did the lookout trail and it took about 45 mins to get up and down. It was incline all the way and the path were on the narrow side. However I really enjoy that it was shaded the entire way and there were cute encouraging signs along the way. Def don't wear cute shoes as they would only get dusty and dirty from the climb up. It didn't take too long to get to the top and there are two benches at the top to enjoy the view (view was partially blocked by the bushes). We didn't get the time to checkout the other redwood trail so I'm not sure where that trail leads. On the grounds, we came across the love temple and the garden which were both were pretty and interesting to find in this area. It def makes for a cute photography spot. It's a pretty area and would make a good/casual date spot! read more

Such a great, short hike. 2 miles round trip from lot 4 which is meant for hikers. Free parking. Dog friendly but must be kept on leash. There is an incline but not too steep & doable for beginner hikers. Narrow dirt paths. Two benches once you reach the top and provides great views of the bay. Plenty of shade throughout the hike. The first two "stops" have trash bins in case your dog poops otherwise you'll have to carry your waste bags for the duration. It's an absolutely picturesque trail and it has a trail for everyone. We were looking for lookout trail from parking lot 4 but ended up going towards the amphitheater and then the gardens abd grounds of Villa Montalvo. It was absolutely gorgeous on a fall Monday morning with very few people around. We then went back up to lookout trail from parking lot 4 and then took the left of fork. It was moderately uphill climb but not too strenuous. The views from top were gorgeous. There were inspiring signs everywhere and the trail was mostly shaded with it being sunny only on top where there were 2 benches. We enjoyed the views for sometime and headed back. Review is for the Lookout Trail. The Villa Montavlo is free to enter. Hours are from 9am-5pm. My boyfriend and I arrived on a Sunday afternoon and there were plenty of parking (maybe because it was slightly raining lol). Parking lot 4 is for hikers. Once you park into the lot, you can easily spot out where the trail starts. We specifically hiked the lookout trail, which was not long. I don't remember the exact miles, but it probably took us about an hour ish roundtrip. The trail is a dirt path with some incline. It is definitely doable for beginner hikers. Along the trail, there are cute signs! Once you are finished with the hike, you can explore around and check out the garden and art pieces. There is a big grassy area, which would be nice for a picnic so bring some food and drinks! If you forgot to bring any food and drinks, there is actually a vending machine in front of the box office. I never would have guessed that set back from the road, nestled up on the hillside was this Villa! Free to enter (open 9-5), there are a few free parking lots. On a Sunday morning, there were still a few spots. I arrived at 11am to Lot 3, and plenty of folks were leaving, so I'm thinking parking isn't an issue on the weekends. We opted to hike up the Lookout Trail. I forgot my hat but no worries, this trail is mostly shaded. With plenty of trees and low brush, the trail was cool. I'd call this level easy to slightly-moderate, since it's an uphill climb but nothing overly strenuous. I saw all age groups from young to old. Some parts are level, hugging the hillside, giving you time to catch your breath. Be prepared to get dusty. At the top, the view of the Bay Area is awesome. Two benches for seating available in case you wanna chill. Be sure to check out the Villa grounds, the grassy open arboretum, and the gated gardens. Definitely stroll-worthy. I saw a few small groups with picnic blankets taking advantage of the grass and shade, while kids running around. 10/10 would return and try a different trail. And also bring snacks! read more

A beautiful venue and park to hike, take pictures, and spend time with family & friends. I've come to Villa Montalvo a few times already to hike the various trails. It does get pretty crowded, so it helps to arrive right when the party opens. Park in parking lot 4 if you're here for hiking. There is a restroom located at the entrance of the parking lot. Fairly clean and well maintained. There are multiple trails you can explore. There's a popular one that can take you to the lookout, but after trekking up this path a few times, I find that it gets pretty crowded especially at the top lookout since people crowd around waiting for those at the benches (ie people who are taking pictures or just chilling) to head back down so they can take their turn. So now I just avoid going to the lookout. If you take the lower part at the first fork (top path goes to the lookout), you can hike around various loop paths. Depending on which trail segments you go down, you can lengthen or shorten your desired customised hike. For the most part, the trails are pretty mellow, but there are a few segments with steeper inclines that give you a nice workout :) If you are interested in pictures, you can also visit the gardens and beautiful lawn at the front of the main building when there aren't probate events being held. I highly recommend stopping by this venue at least once, especially if you are local to the Bay area. It's a beautiful place to visit. read more

What a stunning place! I enjoy coming here to hike and also venture around the grassy area and gardens. There are so many beautiful artwork pieces to enjoy as well. There's a specific parking lot for hiking so just follow the signs. You can start as early as 8am. The hiking area closes at sunset. There is a restroom near the hiking trailhead. There are so many different hikes you can do from shorter 1 mile hikes to longer loops. There are many trails with good inclines too to help work your cardiovascular system. The first hike you can take leads you up to a nice valley view and there's 2 benches you can sit on to take in nature's glory. Do stop by if you're in the area! read more

I fell in love with Villa Montalvo years ago when I did a photosession there of a couple. The grounds are so beautiful there and maintained well by the staff. I definitely would love to come hiking here one of these days soon when the air improves for real. There's a parking area designated for hikers, which I thought was cool. This area has a variety of scenery for hiking which I think is awesome because you have the trails where there's the trees, the beautiful garden areas, a pond area to see some fishies, and seeing the Montalvo Arts Center. Some tips that I would suggest... Definitely put on insect repellant as there are so many buggies flying around. I remember when I did the photoshoot years ago, I got several mosquito bites which are not fun at all. :( So yes, do put on bug spray to prevent that! Bring water to stay hydrated. This area is wonderful for pictures but you do need to obtain a permit for professional pictures which my friends did when they had their small wedding ceremony a couple of weeks ago. I definitely look forward to hiking here with hopefully a significant other or family sometime in the near future. :) read more

Beautiful area with redwoods and clearly marked trails. We hiked up Lookout Trail and enjoyed the view at Lookout Point. The trails are dirt and well maintained. The loop was around 2 miles and took less than an hour. Most of the path was shaded by the tall trees and redwoods. There were many families out enjoying the area. My family enjoyed this short hike and we'll be back! read more

The hike has a different parking lots and chose the right one to be in the right direction. We parked in Lot 4 and started from there till view point and then the route missed, but eventually we got to see some beautiful scenery along the way. Hiking Trail Review: -Overlook Point Trail- We parked at the P1 next to the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency ( the residency is in a private property but the parking is public ). There's a trailhead just north of the parking lot. It's a nicely paved trail which takes you up to the Montalvo Arts Center. Walk pass the Sobrato Circle , walk towards the Poet's Walk. There you'll find the statues of John Muir and Joaquin Miller at the bottom of the stairs. Once you climb up to the top of the stairs, there is a statue of Edwin Markham. ( I just finished reading "A life Amongst Modocs by Joaquin Miller so it was cool to see his statue). Top of the stairs, you'll see a marker which says Redwood Trail. Go left and you can pick up the Overlook Point Trail from there. Distance : 3.5 miles All uphills to the overlook point. Kids friendly Not stroller /wheelchair friendly You're rewarded with the views of the South Bay from the peak. There are some benches at the top. Inspirational quotes signs throughout the trails. read more

Beautiful place for an easy/moderate hike. There are some inclines, but nothing very strenuous (even little kids were making it through this hike). You get a great view from Lookout Point, and there are many cute signs along the trails that help you remember to enjoy the moment. It's great that you don't have to travel far to enjoy walking among towering trees, but this place gets CROWDED. I would highly recommend getting there early in order to get a parking spot and avoid the crowds. The trails are fairly narrow, so it may get a bit uncomfortable if you're trying to social distance. I arrived around 9 am on a weekend, and by the time we left at 10:30, the parking lot just had a couple of spots left. Quick tip: the County Park website says that the park and trails open at 8 am, but in order to get to the parking area you need to get through the gates of Montalvo Arts Center. The Montalvo Arts Center doesn't open until 9 am, so the gates aren't open until a bit after 8 am. read more

Just popping in to write a quick review... what a beautiful spot for a wedding! The weather was absolutely perfect in early October, allowing every part of the event to be outdoors. We had a lovely dinner on the veranda while the sun was setting, and it was cool but not cold once it was dark out (I never even needed my shawl). I had a work deadline coming up and needed some laptop time while my partner was taking photos (he was in the wedding party). I love to visit Villa Montalvo on weekends whenever I have time. Lovely garden, art installations and great hiking trails. I also love to attend concerts in their theater hall. During summer they have summer camps for kids that my son has attended for many summers and have enjoyed all of them especially the youth theater programs and the art programs. They also have many events. Parking is available either at the upper lots or at the lower one. Highly recommend this place. read more

There is a hiking trail right behind the Villa is so refreshing. Perfect for hot summer days as it offers plenty to full coverage. You are basically walking among beautiful redwood trees. We did it in about an hour, going at a moderate pace. It does have a little elevation but it's doable. read more
