But it turns out the food was great, service was relatively quick and food was better than expected! Our table ordered combo, which consists of pork fried rice, some entree and either egg Foo young or egg rolls. The one with egg rolls costs less than 7$, the one with egg foo young is 4.70$ (we thought it was a mistake on the price). The area is a ghetto, lol, selling hookah right next door. But once you're inside it just feels like just another family owned Chinese restaurant. With a hint of smell of Chinese incense... Would be a better alternative to Pandex. read more

The ambience is homey in a way that you feel as if you've been going to eat there your whole life. Eating the ham fried rice and house made red chili paste makes all your stresses melt away. Every carrot, mushroom and piece of chicken are all cut with such care and cooked to perfection, nothing is ever overdone or mushy. In a word, sketchy. Downtown Barstow is super sketch. We parked by the Union Bank because there is a security guard that stands outside. We were very hungry though, and we like supporting the local economy, rather than eating at a chain fast food place. McD's may have been a better option. The food needed salt, and was greasy. The server was not clean. The cook was not clean. The bathrooms were not clean. They make and serve their own hot sauce, which I believe they do in their own kitchen and somehow that seems unsanitary, and again, sketchy. What a gem of a place!!! Found this place on Yelp. Tired of the usual fast food while stoping in Barstow. Never again will we have to settle for fast food. The place is unassuming, but the food was as good as any Chinatown, in any California City! I got to speak with the owner and he mention that they have been there for 50 years. We got, the Chinese Beef Steak, Chicken Curry, Shrimp with Bok Choy, Beef Chow Fun, and Orange Chicken. All were very good and we left nothing on the plates. If I could give it a zero I would, I went in for lunch today and ordered a steak lunch and a glass of water. When the order came the steak was really tiny laid over 4 half slices of bread and didnt come with the trimmings as advertised. The glass of water that was brought to me was dirty, along with the grimy look of the place, it smells bad. Stay away, do not waste ur money here, I tried talking to someone about my complaint and all they could say was sorry and didnt try to make it right...paid almost $9, would not recommend what so ever. read more

We found this cafe on Yelp and were intrigued by the solid high marks from previous diners. The Village Cafe does not attempt to make a huge variety of food; their menu is Chinese and their entrees are absolutely delicious, fresh, plentiful, and promptly prepared. The house special chop suey and the Hong-Kong Style chow mein were superb! We also enjoyed the vegetable egg rolls as an appetizer. Edward managed the front of the house with skill and courtesy. This was FANTASTIC food. Three of us stopped here on our way through town on Christmas Eve. We had egg flower soup, beef and broccoli, egg rolls, tea, chicken soup, and vegetable mushroom soup. I often travel between Las Vegas and Sacramento and for years have tried to find a restaurant that was acceptable along this route. The Village Cafe is all that and more. The owner, Henry Wong, who was born in Hong Kong in 1929, met us at the door with smiling eyes and a gracious greeting. He has owned this restaurant for 44 years and takes a great deal of pride in providing fresh, quality wholesome food and an enjoyable atmosphere. Everything we ate (from a standard BLT to the completely vegan mushroom and vegetable soup) was delicious! Definitely was hesitant, as I was judgmental of the book cover, it's got a "hole in the wall" vibe from the outside looking in... yet I am soo glad I read between the lines and dug a little deeper into the first chapter. We were invited in with welcoming smiles by an older gentlemen who was hard to understand yet so patient with our lack of culture. We very much enjoyed the $2.50 price on Special C breakfast, as well as the delicious food that came accompanied with it! The meal came quick and didn't disappoint at all. The eggs were cooked perfectly to my liking. I am very picky when it comes to my scrambled eggs! The eggs were not runny, not too oily, not too greasy, yet just perfect! I was impressed!!! The meal was filling and unlike any other $2.50 breakfast one would expect. The bacon was also cooked well and enjoyable. My darlin got sausage that was also delicious by the bite I stole from him. I give this place 4 stars because I am definitely a fan of family owned businesses and this place definitely took care of you like family. When I was going out with my uncle we decided to go somewhere we haven't been to eat before. We found this restaurant down the street from my high school and I instantly fell in love. They inside has a 1950's or 1960's style and furniture. The food is great, and service is excellent. After that day me and my family go there religiously. It is close to my high school and is reasonable in price, it is actually very affordable. I love this place and would recommend this to friends and family driving into Barstow, even strangers who are just passing through. It will forever be one of my favorite spots in Barstow and would recommend it to anyone. read more

Coming home from Laughlin, we had a blowout. Tow Truck brought us to Barstow and we had a stall for time while they repair the tire. Found this gem in the middle of the desert! Oh wow, what great food! This is the prices are extremely affordable considering the quality and the quantity of food that you receive. It was 15 minutes to closing and I called to let the owner know we were coming over. I'm rolling with all my kids coming back from a New Year's weekend and there were a total of 15 of us coming for dinner. Edward helped me out, and he was so gracious and service oriented.
