The restaurant is beautifully decorated with German art, artifacts, paintings, etc. The waitresses dress in traditional German clothes. The service is fair-paced and all staff were very kind. We requested candles in a slice of cake for my dad's birthday, they did great. The food!!! Everyone leaves satisfied and with leftovers. My first time in this place ! I love the atmosphere and the decorations and the band playing but the one waitress I had gotten had an I don't care attitude ! I had ordered the potato pancakes which was too thick ! Next was the jagersnitzel ! I had to wait 35 min for my food too that the other waitress said u want that fried or sautéed ? I like the Village Lanterne. We've been there several times over the past few years. The Village Lanterne is a German-restaurant. They have a great selection of German beers and a really lovely Biergarten out back. I do wish they would carry a Non-alcoholic beer selection. We went with friends on Sunday evening during Memorial Day weekend. We sat on the patio on a beautiful evening. The chair was surprisingly very comfortable for me. Big Guy Comfort Factor of 8. The service was very good. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The food was decent - not great. They have great pretzel rolls. My buddy and I both had the Sauerbraten. Very nice portion. The red cabbage was very good. The sauerbraten itself, the gravy and the potato balls were fine. The desserts - Black Forest Cake and Strawberry Shortcake - were nice portions and very good. I've had better food at the Village Lanterne - I'll chalk it up to the holiday weekend. We all had a great time. We were not rushed at all and had plenty of time to catch up with our friends. This is one of my favorites on Long Island. This place is soooo good. All of it. My friend and i split a family platter which is perfect for two fat asses or a family of four, having two small kiddos. It came with a bit of everything. The meats were so tender and tasty. The staff is a lot of fun there. They had a band playing with accordions they was very lively. The place is lovely decorated for Christmas. Always a good time with good food and staff here. I would rate Village Lantern 3/5 stars. I visited today with my family and ordered the schwabisch pork platter, which included braised pork shank, one bratwurst, pork belly, potato pancakes, and sauerkraut. The pork shank was dry, but the bratwurst and pork belly were decent. Overall, the meal was mediocre. The service was extremely slow, and we didn't get our food until about an hour later, despite the restaurant being empty. The potato pancake was delicious, though the menu description of "potato pancakes" was misleading, as it only came with one. read more

Date Night with my boyfriend brought us here on a Wednesday night! My boyfriend suggested this place, as we both have never been. I did research the menu prior to coming, so I did have a good idea of what I wanted. After we sat down we were given a fresh basket of pretzel rolls. They were warm, fresh and delish. For appetizers we decided on onion rings with beer cheese dip and munster-ella sticks with beer cheese dip. The munster-ella sticks were the best cheese sticks I've ever had. Fried cheese.... count me in.. always! And that beer cheese....mmmmmm! The onion rings...were just basic in my opinion. I don't feel they are made in house and had a frozen then heated up feel to me. But again, beer cheese! For my meal I decided on Dumpling Crusted Salmon. It was very delicious and was served with mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies. I'm normally not a fan of mashed potatoes, but these were yummy. I wish I wasn't so full so I could eat more. Veggies were nicely seasoned. My boyfriend ordered jagerschnitzel, which spätzle and cabbage. He enjoyed it all. I did have a bite of the jagerschnitzel, it had great flavor. Our waitress was great. She continued to check-up on us without being overwhelming. Oh, beers! Only German beers served here. I don't remember what type of beer we had, but it was nice and refreshing. The atmosphere is nice. Also, Wednesdays are "I don't give a Schnit Wednesdays!" Schnitzel specials all day. Came here on a Sunday night for dinner with a decent sized party and had no problem getting a reservation and a table. To start with service, I think Gabriella was the name of our waitress and she was as sweet as could be! Great service all around, was able to answer any questions, was attentive, and even great with the kids with us. It's hard to pick just one thing on the menu when everything sounds as good as it does, but alas here I am. For appetizers we got wings, onion rings and potato pancakes, with the potato pancakes being the star of the trio. You also get pretzel rolls complimentary, and they are a game changer, I could come here for just those! For a main I got the chicken stroganoff and I've had the Jaeger schnitzel previously, both are delicious but I think the schnitzel edges out as the winner by a small hair. Also tried a small taste of the double chocolate cake, and although it's quite rich, it really is a delicious cake. The atmosphere is about as authentic rustic German as it gets, and during the holidays they have all kinds of fanfare too. Parking right out front is limited to the street on busy wellwood, but you can also park in the back where there are a few municipal lots nearby which are much easier to get in and out of. This place will always be in the back of my mind when I'm thinking of somewhere to go that's a little bit special for a celebration. read more

Well, it's official, I've found my new favorite spot on Long Island for anything related to German food. This place is on point. I had traveled to Germany in 2018 and 2019 and found the German food to be something I had been missing all my life. I was in food heaven over there, with the schnitzels, and the brats, and the beer, and the pork shanks, etc, etc, etc. I was saddened coming back to the US because I didn't think I'd find that level of quality anywhere. Believe me I tried. Went to a place when visiting Cleveland that came close, went to another in Vegas that had the look, but was lacking in food quality. Enter the Village Lanterne. I had heard this place recommended, but I remained skeptical. Finally, a group of friends and I decided to come here to catch up, and I couldn't have been happier. First off, I noticed from other reviewers, complaints about making reservations, slow service, and non-smiling or friendly wait staff. I can tell you that my experience was totally contrary to that. We called to make a reservation for a Wednesday night, and had no problems. Perhaps its a different story on the weekends. The woman that seated us could not have been nicer. Our waitress was friendly and saw that we were a group of people catching up, so she gave us time to chat, put in a drink order, then an app order, and then finally, put in our dinner order. Our drinks came out super quick. The apps were not far behind. I also don't remember waiting that long for our main courses to pop out not long after we were able to enjoy our apps, which were the fried Wurst & Kraut and the Onion rings. Both delicious!! For the main course, our group ordered the the Goulash, the Schwab (w/ Jagerschnitzel) and the Schwabisch Pork platter. (see pictures) All recommendations from the lovely waitress who was working with us. What fantastic choices. As I said, we did not wait long at all for our meals to come out. We asked for a few extra plates so we could share our meals. We were three hungry people, for our meals were enough to feed six of us, if I'm honest. The food was hot, presentation was good, and the taste was DELICIOUS. I felt that I was transported back to my time in Germany and enjoying their culinary delights once again. Oh, they also have live music, which is a real treat!! The one upsetting thing is that they are limited in the amount of Apple Strudel, so when we ordered they said they were out, but no matter, we had the back up plan of the Black Forest cake with cherries, and let me tell you, that was also really, really good. Not too sweet, with and excellent mix of chocolate & cherry flavor. The ONLY downside I saw here was that they shut things down at 9pm. We were having so much fun wining & dining that we lost track of time, until we noticed the music stopped, and the place clearing out. We didn't want to leave. I wanted to have one last drink at the bar, but they had closed! As I said, this place has shot up on my favorite places to go on Long Island. I can't wait to go back when it warms up and sit outside in their Biergarten. I can't image how much fun this place is during Oktoberfest, but I will find out in late September! read more

I'm here a lot because of the live music. I keep giving the food another try but it's always a disappointment. The waitresses are not very attentive. It is very hard to get their attention and they never check back with you to see if everything is ok. Tonight I ordered a chicken caesar wrap because I saw someone with a chicken Caesar salad that looked good. However, once my wrap arrived all I tasted was chicken and lettuce. I asked for dressing because none seemed to be on the sandwich and I didn't see or taste the shredded cheese that had topped the salad. Finally, I had asked for mashed potatoes instead of fries but I was served fries. I didn't bother returning them but they were very salty and not very tasty. Disappointing. read more

Great German restaurant with an old German village pub feel. Have been here a few times and always have had a good experience. First the atmosphere is very cool. Reminds you of an old village pub in Germany with plenty of authentic decorations. Food is very good and there's a large selection of tap German beers. Portion size is huge so keep that in mind when ordering. I've gotten the sampler appetizer to start which can easily feed a family of 4. For dinner the sampler platter is a great option if your not sure what to get. Can easily feed four people and gives you a nice variety. Service is very good and is family run. My friend has been telling me to come here for 2 years! Shame on me. I had it mixed up with a different location. OMG this place is on spot on target and on your taste buds! Met the owner met the crew. The food is authentic German and the beers are plentiful on tap. They have a Biergarten in the back that's opened weather permits. The bar is a great vibe. Locals yolkss and newbies like me! It's addicting and you leave feeling above content! They bake all their deserts on premise. The blackout cake is to die for. What else can I say. We've been here several times and we usually love the food. This last visit, some of the meals were a little off. We were seated quickly in a booth (a bit away from the live music, which was perfect.) Took a bit for our waitress to get to us (which was fine), so the hostess took our beverage orders to get things started. I couldn't resist the Dunkel, served cold in a tall mug. We started with the potato pancakes, which were excellent and the currywurst, also very good. The wait for our meals was a little longer than I would have expected, but not bad. For my meal I had the schnitzel sandwich - veal, muenster, lettuce, tomato on a pretzel roll! It was excellent. Only ate half. My wife had the chicken schnitzel, which she has loved in the past. She was not thrilled this time. It was over cooked/dry. Everything else was fine and the restaurant looked really nice with the lights and decorations still up. This restaurant can only be described as weird. My wife and I went there with another couple, the place was empty. The host asked us if we had reservations and said without reservation they couldn't give us a table, we sat at the bar and had overpriced beer and terrible mixed drinks. On one side of the bar there is a weird ugly life size witch statue and many small witches hanging from the ceiling. The food is not good, terrible actually!! If you want great authentic German food, you should goto Zum Stammtisch Myrtle Ave Glendale. We will not go back to this place, bad experience. read more

The decor is German alps to the max. There isn't an empty space anywhere except in the bathroom. Food portions are extremely large and filling. We had a sampler appetizer shared by 3 people and that would have been enough for lunch. When our meals came we could barely eat them. If you go at dinner time you need a reservation since this restaurant is so popular. Friday lunch there was only one waitress taking care of at least 10 tables, mgmt might want to have 2 waitresses taking care of lunch. read more

We have been coming here for years, and unfortunately I have to say that Village Lantern was off their game tonight. It was as if the kids were running the store, and management was nowhere to be found. Food was off but still good, except for the overcooked Spaten, but service was significantly down. First, this was a Saturday night, but you would think it was a Tuesday night with the absence of usual music and entertainment. Our server then greets us with the 'Sorry, no sandwiches after 5pm rule at 6:30pm,, which originally we were fine with, but after seeing sandwiches being delivered to other patrons this irritated us. Since we were a large group, our feeling is that our waitress wanted the bill as large as possible, and sandwiches are on the cheaper side. When asked for separate checks, we got attitude, no answer, and no separate checks. Although the place did not seem crowded, it took unacceptably long for us to get our appetizers and our meals. Our waitress disappeared for a long length of time while we all were in need of additional drinks, and she was nowhere to be found. Then we get the bill and discover that our server gave herself a nice 20% tip which was calculated on the final total which includes the 3% charge for using a credit charge. Service did not warrant a 20% tip, not to mention that it should NOT be calculated on top of the final total (although I gave her 20% but calculated on the subtotal). When confronted about it, the waitress seemed confused and needed to go consult with others before answering my question. We were then informed that this amount was 'suggested', although there was nothing to indicate that on the bill. My feeling is that they were trying to pull a fast one on us, as they thought most people would not scrutinize a bill that was over $700. Really not happy, and sadly would not return. read more

We went on a Saturday night with a group of 4. As we were looking at the menu to decide what to eat the waitress never told us that they were not serving sandwiches and burgers because she said they were really busy and that food was made to order and would take too long. So we ordered food that was easy to prepare. We got our drinks and the entertainment there was the only savior. Our food did not come out for an hour. I felt bad for the waitress as it was not her fault but the kitchen could not handle the crowd that day. I felt bad for the people that brought me here to celebrate my birthday because I choose the restaurant after looking up places in the Lindenhurst area. i would only come back again for drinks and the entertainment but never again for dinner. read more

Definitely a must try if your looking for traditional German fare that offers numerous Euro style beers. My server was helpful in navigating the menu if you need these German dishes explained. The restaurant is decorated top down with mugs, lanterns, and other traditional German decor that really makes for great ambiance. The nightly entertainment is really fun, and adds to this unique experience. I probably would make reservations; especially on the weekends. I recommend giving this place a shot. read more

Last evening, we made a special trip to the Village Lanterne in Lindenhurst for dinner. As it turned out, we were not pleased. My beer was good and his Bloody Mary was nice. The end! His sauerbraten (4 small slices) was OK. The potato dumplings were quite bland and watery. The red cabbage put both of us in the bathroom that nite. My weinerschnitzle was good. But the spaetzle was horrible and couldn't be eaten, vegetables were over cooked and the red cabbage was a big question mark. I too wound up in the bathroom glued to the toilet bowl. We were shocked! I never like to do this but this is kind of ridiculous. Tried to call on a Thursday to make a reservation for Saturday night. It was probably 6:00. I let the phone ring about 20 times. Tried back an hour later, same thing. Called the next day at 2:00. After 8 rings, a woman answered. She said, "You need to call back at 4:00 to speak with a manager." I told her I tried to call last night but the phone just kept ringing. Her response was, "We were very busy." Now, I know that staffing is very tight right now but that is not a good answer. This restaurant used to be a favorite but sadly not anymore. Upon arrival was seated at a booth which had a seat that felt like I was on a see-saw. Every time I moved it lifted off which I told both waitress and owner about. This is both a danger and an annoyance to those in booth behind us. Instead of them switching us to a new table was told they'd fix it in the morning by owner. The food ordered jaggersnitzel with spetzel came out in less than 10 minutes to us. That shows it was all precooked and not freshly made. There was a lack of taste to the dish. It was lacking flavor with much needed spice. Went back yesterday to order off the lunch menu. Oh boy - tale of the tape: Portobello Mushroom Stacker Layered grilled vegetables covered in muenster cheese. The "stack" is built thusly: Red Pepper slices Onion Zucchini (two slices) Yellow Squash (two slices) Eggplant Portobello Mushroom A slightly vinegary sauce coats the vegetables, giving them additional flavor. The vegetables have a light yet firm crunch. Very good! Meatball Sliders Two meatballs in their homemade sauce and muenster cheese on pretzel rolls. The meatballs have a good, subtly savory flavor all their own with a soft yet firm enough texture. The pretzel rolls is the Village Lanterne doing what they do best - a texture and flavorful perfect pretzel in a roll format. Together they make a very satisfying little sandwich where the roll admittedly slightly overpowers the meatball . . . but there's nothing that says you have to eat it that way. Maybe hollow out the top bun and cut the bottom in half latitudinally to get more of a meat to roll ratio, and enjoy the extra roll pieces by themselves! If there's any complaint, I would liked to have had a little more sauce and cheese . . . German Potato Salad This was an afterthought to add to my lunch menu, and I'm so glad I did . . . ! The potatoes are thinly sliced and cooked perfectly, with a soft firmness perfect for any style of potato salad. The flavor was also perfection, with just the right amount of vinegary brine infused into the slices. This is easily the best German potato salad I have ever had, and I can now say that I've had truly authentic German potato salad. I had to stop myself before I ate the whole take-out container, which was a mostly filled one pound container like you would get at any given deli. I will get this whenever I visit, including when I go to their adjoining Black Forest Bakery. read more

If you're looking for a cozy spot to enjoy mugs of German beer with a side of soft pretzels and cheese dip, look no further! This place is very warm and welcoming with lots of wooden accents and German decor. I was impressed by how clean everything was. There's nothing worst than a sticky and dusty bar. The bar has mugs hanging above it for drinking with a great selection of German beer on draft. The wooden bar top and booths encourage slamming your mug down after a long chug of fine German brew. The food is great for sharing with large portions. We ordered the beer cheese dip and jagerschnitzel. I highly recommend the dip. The schnitzel was excellent as well but I wasn't impressed by the red cabbage and spaetzle. The cabbage was a little too mushy and needed more acidity. The spaetzle was too much like scrambled eggs and needed seasoning. The service was ok. I can see how the service could be lacking as other reviewers have pointed out. We had to ask for share plates and at one point we had to search for our server to ask for the check. Besides that she was very attentive. I would definitely recommend this place and would also return myself. It's a fun spot that is very welcoming. Bring a bunch of friends, order some apps and get ready to drink some good beer.
