Food has slipped over the years, everything tasted bland and the jaeger schnitzel was terrible, it was a pound of vegetables covering the thinnest slice of pork in existence and it was chewy and flavorless. The Black Forest cake was also inedible, it tasted like it has been sitting out for a few months, it was super dry and had an off stale taste to it. Parking lot was full this Saturday night so I parked across the street hoping I don't get towed. The staff was very welcoming and dressed accordingly for a rustic looking German restaurant. This is the second review iI am placing. We desputed the bill with our credit card company, it was taken off our bill, two months later the owner disputed and it was put on my charge again. I have made 4 phone call to talk to ther owner, getting a excuse every time.How do I start, we sat for about 15 mionutes before anyone approached us. This review represents me and my wife, if it was just me, it would be 1 star less. Cute place, nice and clean and well maintained. Waitress was fine dressed in german garb. Bottom line is the chef has a love with dried Thyme and an aversion to salt. The spaetzle had no salt, terrible, everything needed salt. I love this restaurant and have been going here for many years with family. It has become a little pricey. You will save some money if you pay in cash. The atmosphere and ambience is great. The staff makes you feel at home and part of the family. The food is served in large portions, so don't let the price scare you. You will most likely bring home almost half your meal to enjoy it another day. Three out of four of us at the table, had the sauerbraten, which is one of the specialties. It was very tender, and could be cut with a fork. Unfortunately, the gravy missed a little bit of the flavoring that it usually has. It was a little bland tasting. I hope that this is not going to be the new norm. Beside that, I would go back again. This was the only time I ever had any experience that was off just a little. Solid 3.5 restaurant. I pass this place almost daily and had never dined here before. Definitely a neighborhood staple for some, judging by the clientele and the host being on first name basis with people walking in. Beer selection was great, and we were seated fairly promptly for a Saturday night. We started off with some bratwurst which I enjoyed, the mustard is fantastic. French onion soup was good, a sweeter tasting rendition vs savory. For dinner, my hubby had the jaegerschnitzel. I thought it was really good, he said he wouldn't get it again. I had the rostbraten. It was good, needed more seasoning to be honest. I had to add salt and pepper for the taste, but it was cooked well. The fried onions on top were good. Spetzle on the side was good. I feel horrible giving a bad review, considering all the work that goes into running a buisness in the food industry. But I just feel this resterant was one of my favorites and I feel it has slipped in recent years. The food is ok, nothing ide brag about. The service is just ok too. There's no hostess so if you don't speak up you might not be seated, the ambiance turns into more of a bar then a resterant if u ask me. Maybe I went too late I don't know, but I was a little disappointed the last two times I went there. read more

I was there the other day with my fiancé. We stumbled upon this restaurant while searching for a spot to eat. The atmosphere is very quaint and old fashioned. Staff are dressed to match the vibe and the service was polite and helpful with suggestions and answers to my questions. The food was all great I had No complaints. Two beers, two apps, two entrees, two coffees came to $125 total. So about average with the way our economy is today. read more

Delicious!! They have a 40 oz cowboy steak that is amazing. You can either share it or take home for leftovers the next day lol I prefer to not share it's that good lol and reasonably priced . Ambience with a German flair . The staff is attentive and friendly and Dale our waitress is fun and bubbly. The chicken cordon bleu was yummy and so was the authentic goulash and very good. Pumpernickels is about as old-school as they get. This is the go-to-place when you crave a good old-fashioned restaurant meal with zero attitude. You will find all the familiar German dishes on their menu from a wurst combo platter to smoked pork chops, Schnitzels, and Beef Rouladen, all well-executed. My single complaint after having dined here on numerous occasions is that, with the many fried items (schnitzels, potato pancakes, etc.) I have more than once tasted old oil that was overdue for a changing. The atmosphere is mid-20th-Century dark and cozy, which is just fine with me. read more

What a great restaurant! We were there tonight for Thanksgiving and absolutely loved it. Our usual place is the garden grill in Smithtown which is usually like a factory on Thanksgiving. We were so happy that we chose pumpernickles tonight. It was very quaint the service was wonderful and the food was delicious. We called to make an earlier reservation and a wonderful gentleman answered the phone, he was so happy and polite and we later found out he was the owner Artie. He takes a lot of pride in his restaurant and how he treats the patrons. We also had a fabulous waitress Sherry she was so kind, polite, sweet, gave us great service and made our Thanksgiving very special. We can't wait to return next year for Thanksgiving and will definitely visit way before that as well since we are locals. read more

Both my wife and I ordered the Jagersnitizel which we've had in the past and both enjoyed, however after it had arrived, we discovered buried under the mushroom sauce a thinly sliced portion that was barely larger than a slice of deli meat. Met up with friends, and never realized that Pumpernickels had a $11.00 lunch menu. It is on the back of the menu. We ordered the Talapia, which is not my favorite fish, BUT the chef did a superb preparation on the fish, mashed potatoes, and thinly sliced carrots with a light lemon cream sauce. It was a hit. Appreciated that the bartender took the time to ask what I wanted in the Old Fashion. It too was good, even without the pineapple. The service is always attentive. We came here as a sort of spur of the moment outing. When we arrived we knew that we made the right choice by how hard it was to find parking. Despite not having a reservation we were seated quickly, however I would recommend getting a reservation next time. The staff were very attentive and friendly. We ordered our meals. My wife had the pigs feet, my sister had the Hungarian Goulash, and I had the Sauerbraten. Our food took a little while to come out, but was worth the wait. The Pig's Feet take a little longer to prepare. All in all the meal and service were wonderful. I would deffinaty reccomend coming here, we will certainly return. read more

The food is WAY overpriced and its not quality German . In fact i'd bet the farm that there s not ONE German person in their kitchen The drinks are PACKED with ice also. floor staff is nice if you hit it on the right day but thats a toss up. This restaurant was good back in the day but all the authentic staffers are long gone. Parking lot very small so you may have to park across the street (no valet) and cross 25A at a dangerous 5 road intersection. The restrooms are on the 2nd floor with a steep staircase and no elevator. No way for elderly parents, grandparents or disabled to get to the bathroom never mind the front door. No handicapped entranceway no ramp of any sort. Village lantern is truly a treasure trove and museum of sorts of authentic Germany. Pumpernickels has a few beer stein's" for decor but sadly lacking.... Basically a town watering hole with bad language from the over served. read more

Always love going to Pumpernickel's for comforting German food. There's nothing else like it in the area. Their appetizers typically are nothing to write home about, (don't get the calamari but do go for the pretzel) but of course you're here for a German entree and a giant Pilsner. Today I got the jaeger schnitzel and it was wonderful. So much flavor and not overly filling. In the past I've also had the sauerbraten which I loved! Very authentic food. This restaurant is very cozy and comfortable with a full German menu. No, the food is not gourmet, but it is quintessential comfort food. I agree with previous posts that it seems to attract a local crowd at the bar. Since I am a local, I liked the scene. It's true that the music does not fit the vibe-should be German music or something more instrumental, not Top 40. The service was great and we really enjoyed the overall coziness and retro feel. Wanted to try a new restaurant & decided to try this one. Parking was a bit tricky since all spots were taken so I called to see if they had another lot, was asked to park next door, which was fine since I figured its a good sign if the lot was full. It was charming. Was greeted & seated by a friendly man whom everyone seemed to know. Seems like this is a local spot since it looked like all of the ppl at the bar, which was full, knew one another. Now I know why the lot was full. The server was very nice & they dressed in German dresses which kept it authentic. Now onto the food, ordered the potato pancakes as an appetizer, I like crispy but these were "lukewarm" and totally burnt on one side...had better elsewhere but they were ok besides being "lukewarm" & burnt especially since I was really hungry at the time. When the entrée came out it was "lukewarm" not hot at all as it should have been. Must have been sitting in the kitchen for a while because the potatoes were on the greasy side and the Wienerschnitzel wasn't crispy at all, as it should have been, but this happens when sitting out getting "lukewarm" vs being served when done but I didn't complain as I should have but I figured maybe it's an off night for them & the server said when I first sat down, that she was kind of new, so I didn't want to possibly get her in trouble so I just stayed shut. Then I asked for a cappuccino & was told the machine was broken. Then asked for chamomile tea & was told they were out so at that point I knew it was time for me to go. Unfortunately for this restaurant being a local staple for 50 years. Thought we give it a try. The restaurant reminds me of my grandmother's living room for my ambiance review. The service was good overall. More importantly the food we ordered the Sauerbraten and the Mongolian goulash and a side of potato pancakes and apple sauce. The food was so bland, with no seasoning, it felt like we had covid all over again. We couldn't even believe you could under season potato pancakes. They tasted like a hint of potato with a filler of some kind. Even with the watered down apple sauce, none of the entrees were good. We took the leftovers and there was a lot because we didn't want to offend anyone. Parking lot was a nightmare. Sorry to say we will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

We met with friends for dinner last week. It had been many years since we visited Pumpernickel's. The restaurant was nice, the background music playing wasn't appropriate for this type of restaurant in my opinion. I ordered the Sauerbraten and I felt the meal fell short. The meat was tender and plentiful but the gravy was thick, heavy and not much flavor. The potato dumplings were OK but not traditional like I am used to. I did enjoy the red cabbage though. My husband said the steak he ordered was over cooked and not medium rare as ordered. We had apple strudel for dessert which was fine but not a true German apple strudel.
