Switching from Asics to New Balance
    Toshi I.

Please note that they are in a new location. Good thing I checked with Yelp and went to the new location right by Sacks on the Beach. I bought my last 2 pairs of running shoes here and the staff is always very knowledgeable and helpful. It really helps when the person helping you is an avid runner themselves. Based on recommendations, I went from my trusty Asics gel to New Balance. When something works fine, why change? But hey, new year, new location and now New Balance! We'll see how these work out. Bonus: They were 30 bucks off. Street metered parking and I got lucky with free parking so I wanted to take advantage of this sunny day for a quick run/walk. (Let's be honest here.) They were very accommodating when I asked if I could go for a "stroll" on the Esplanade and come back to pick up my new shoes on the way back. Note: if you are signing up for a local race, please bring checks or cash.

Jerry is super sweet and helped me pick these gems out!! He was so kind and brought out several shoes for me to try on based on what I described I liked. He also helped me with resizing and some neat shoe-tying technique. I purchased other sauconys from Village Runner a few years ago and they served me well! Will definitely return here for my running needs! Thanks so much, Jerry and Village Runner Team

This place has always been my fave place to get my running shoes. A lot of runners come here. I got my first pair of official running shoes here, way back in 2015. When I was wearing a size 11 sneaker and they checked my feet and I'm really a size 12 1/2 running shoe, no wonder my feet always hurt lol. I been coming back since. They are involved in a lot of local races and also local fun runs and training runs. I'll always come back and support local businesses when I get a chance

They are a South Bay friendly run shop. If you run track at a local high school, ask for a 10% discount.

Having grown up in the South Bay I've shopped Village Runner for a LONG time. They are a fabulous local run shop which also sponsors various 5K/10K races. The staff is always friendly and helpful in getting you into the right shoes/equipment. My daughter is starting to run Cross Country in high school so we came here to get her outfitted. We happily made a big investment, and we got great service as always. The selection set is not huge, but they will go out of their way to order whatever you might need. I have always found that they have something that meets my needs. Make sure you support this great local business if you are looking for anything running related.

They know how to fit a foot. The staff is educated and can explain why you would choose one product over another without being to geeky.

All that's left is Big 5 and Dick's. REI doesn't count, as they're too niche. This location has a lot of merchandise and it's inherent problem is the aesthetics of the layout of the store. It's way too crowded and cramped for shopping and could use an expansion and makeover where it feels well-lit and spacious. It's sort of the difference between Target and Wal-Mart. I think Big 5 could use new branding as a company. It's a good store with good prices. They do "over coupon" as Bed Bath and Beyond did. You can always anticipate a $5 off of $15 type value-pac FSI mailer coupon and almost won't shop without a coupon. It's a longterm flawed business strategy. Their prices are quite good in many ways. I went shopping for shoes and they had shoes on sale for $30-40 where I went next door to DSW and most of their comparable shoes were $50-55. You'd think DSW whose only business is selling shoes, would have a competitive edge, but it doesn't and didn't, at least for active/athletic shoes compared to Big 5. I'd say check Big 5 out first or last, but don't buy any shoes until you've visited a Big 5 like this one. Parking is fairly easy in this outdoor strip mall of sort, that has a Sizzler, Harbor Freight and other businesses.

What I appreciate most is no hassle or pressure for buying into the membership. Hence the 5 stars. Raymond was very polite & made me feel comfortable by offering to try other makes/brands to see what will the best shoe fit. I ended up buying two pairs. I've purchased single pairs before & regretted not buying a second pair coz I liked the fit so much. Learnt that lesson well. Happy with this experience today

I did, and I was later told that the Torrance manager and team had "touched base" with me, which is inaccurate. The only interaction I had with the store after my purchase was when I returned the same day to try to return the shoes. No one from the store ever contacted me afterward to follow up or try to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, no resolution was offered. Still the worse experience I've ever had. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. ---- Road Runner Sports started as a promising experience but turned into one of the most frustrating customer service situations I've had. I came in to buy running shoes, and the initial process seemed great. The associate scanned my feet (which was actually pretty cool), had me try insoles, and brought out three shoe options that fit my profile. However, communication was difficult, he was mostly mumbling, and I had to repeatedly ask him to clarify what he was saying. When I decided on a pair of ASICS, he immediately tried to upsell the insoles (around $120), even though I had only tried the shoes with those insoles, not with the original ones. That felt a bit misleading. At checkout, he also pushed the VIP membership, saying it would give me 90 days to try the shoes and return them if needed, making it sound like that flexibility depended on being a member. We declined. When I got home and tried to run in the shoes, I couldn't even last 90 seconds, they just didn't work for me. We called the store (using the number listed online) and were told that as long as the shoes looked brand new, we could return them. That gave us confidence to go back. Unfortunately, the in-store experience during the return was completely different. The associate told us: * The shoes did not qualify as "brand new" * We could not get a refund to the original payment method unless we were members * The only option was a gift card Then, again, we were offered the membership as a solution. The inconsistency between what we were told on the phone and what happened in-store, combined with the repeated upselling, made this a very frustrating experience. What started as a helpful, professional fitting ended with unclear policies and poor communication.

My husband had a little sticker shock at the register for the 26 lb weight we were buying. He took a moment because he thought it was a little less online. When he asked "and that's the total with tax?". Normally you hear back a confirmation but instead she said no with tax it's $73.62. Mind you we were at the register to pay not for a price check. My husband was looking at his phone and she blurts out "you want it or not?". We told her yes but I had to explain to her he is just taking a moment to look up the price. Normally someone at the register gives the total price when purchasing not sub total. I walked away once my husband got the receipt and was already a good ways away from the register and she yells out "Good Bye!" In the most patronizing tone. It was the cherry on top for this review. We are all human and can do better but this right here is why online shopping and self check out is putting cashiers out of jobs. Maybe she should remember that the next time she wants to be unjustifiably rude and try to make people feel less than with "you want it or not?". So if you want your intentions to be buy something rudely questioned in front of other guests than this is the place and Jaslene is your go to.
