We've driven past village tavern at least a hundred times and it has always been packed. The few times we attempted to go previously, the wait was longer than we could manage. Tonight was finally the evening when we were able to go, despite a bit of a waitlist still (45 minutes). The hostess was on point with her estimate and also very quick to get us seated within the promised time frame. I also found out they offer reservations, so we will use that option loving forward. First of all-service was excellent. Our waiter came to the table within a moment of being seated to get started with waters and non-alcoholic options, and was quick to check back up on us and see if we were ready or had questions. He made several great recommendations on both food and drinks. My only caveat was that my 10 oz steak was a bit on the salty side, but this may be due to the aging process. It was cooked to a beautiful medium per my request, and both my sides (asparagus and loaded baked potato) were yummy, well cooked and seasoned perfectly. My husband got a pasta with pancetta and caramelized onions, and it was absolutely delicious. Suggested wines were paired well with both entrees. We opted to get a few more drinks with dessert, and both were also very good. The bartenders are not stingy in their pours! We also split the butter cake for dessert and I will say that Paula Dean would have been proud of that cake. It was melt-in-your mouth richness paired with a slightly tangy fruit sauce, fresh berries and a tasty vanilla ice cream. The restaurant was pretty crowded, and parking is always at a premium, but we were able to get parked close and quickly in the rain. VT has a pretty expansive food menu along with a wide variety of wine and cocktails. My husband decided to try the paloma, and I skipped the alcohol for this trip. Quay was our server, and his service was excellent! His recommendations felt very sincere, especially with so many options to choose from. My first time at Village Tavern and I was highly impressed with the food! I ordered the Thai Chicken Salad for my lunch entree and shared the potato chips as an appetizer. The chips were hot and fresh. My salad was delicious and a big portion size. The interior was nice! It gave me ski lodge lobby vibes. My only complaint was the wait time to be seated. We had reservations and it took 25 minutes past the reservation time once they did seat us. Despite that, service was quick and attentive once we were seated. The Village Tavern is a building on its own in a shopping center. The parking lot was incredibly crowded, so we had to park a little bit further away from the restaurant. Rest assured, you will find parking, but it may not be close when it is a busy season. I would definitely go here again to try more of their menu! read more

Blown away!! Went here for lunch on a weekend and they were setup well for it. The place was moderately busy, but we did not have a wait since we had a reservation. The service was super quick. They did try to squeeze us all at one high top table by the bar, but I think it was due to the request of the birthday girl. 4 of us were able to move so that we could have space to truly enjoy our food. My omelette was cooked perfectly and I was surprised at how well the red pepper jelly complimented the pimento cheese and bacon. It was soooo good! My husband raved about how good the biscuit was. Fluffy, buttery and so tasty. Everything was prepared so well. My hubby decided he must try their carrot cake and it was amazing! It was a shareable portion so I also indulged. The cake was so moist and the frosting was perfection! I regretfully did not take any pictures of the dishes but trust me, it was delicious and we will definitely be back! Originally we were told the wait would be about 45 minutes, but ended up only waiting about 15. We were seated in the bar area on a high too table. Servers visited pretty quickly to get our drink orders, and were ready to take our order when they brought them back. Having trouble deciding, my wife and I decided to split an order of the nachos. The food came out pretty quickly considering how busy they still were that late. The nachos were piled high with toppings and the they didn't skimp on the pimento cheese. Apparently, village Tavern has some work to do with getting good managers in place. I got a birthday email with $10 off, if I spent $25. Didn't see any fine print, never had a problem in the past. My bill came out to $25 and maybe $.28. When I went to get rung up, they had to send the manager over, he whispers to me, you were so close, unfortunately it's before taxes is what the offer is. Why don't I get you a piece of cake to put you over the limit? I didn't need a $10 piece of cake to celebrate my birthday by myself. This is why places end up going under. read more

We went on Sunday for an early lunch. No line around 12 pm. Service was fast in the beginning - then it got busier and was taking longer than expected. Great food though. 1. Fried oysters - crispy on the outsider and tender inside with great flavor. 2. Crab dip - never disappoints 3. Same for mountain trout - sauce is different from before but still very yummy. 4 desserts - double decker cheesecake is really - not overly sweet but very creamy. 5. Key lime pie - very good as well. My kids took me out for my birthday, however since it's on a week day, my son works nights, so we opted for Sunday afternoon. I didn't know they had an all day brunch menu, surprise! I thought it was great. My omelet was very fluffy and delicious. As you can see from the photo's almost didn't get them. Everyone was chowing down. Food was on point. We had 12pm reservations and were sat right away by our waitress amy who was super attentive and kind. She brought us waters and took our appitizer order and then came back for drink orders and food orders. When I say the food came out so quickly and we were almost done eating by 1235 it was insane because they were busy but so efficient. The food was delicious too. My salad was massive and tasted great, my old fashion nice and strong and i loved the variety they offered. The chicken in the chicken teriyaki was nice and tender and the club sandwich was piled high that my dad barely finished half. The calamari was perfectly fried not chewy I only wish I had more. I was quite disappointed when I learned about a year ago that the Charlotte location of Village Tavern had permanently closed. I had always enjoyed my dinners there. Was in the Greensboro area yesterday and visited Village Tavern there. Maybe an off night, moderately busy on a Wednesday, but the food I remembered as great was way below average. The meatloaf with Madeira sauce had to have had the recipe or ingredients changed. Average at best. The sauce used to be amazing- rich and flavorful. Last night was overly thickened with flour and unappealing. Would never get it again (probably don't have to worry since my desire to return is not there. We had nachos to share initially. Large portion but soggy generally and mediocre- except for the quantity not special at all. One person in our small group had a quesadilla- comment was "I've probably had this in various places 25 times- this was the worst." Filling tasted like out of a can- not fresh, hot, or flavorful. Non-traditional sauces. No guacamole. Maybe just purchased in bulk from a food wholesaler and reheated? I didn't taste the chicken Marsala so cannot comment- it looked fine and was a plentiful serving. Based on reviews of this restaurant by others, I'm in a minority thinking it to be far below average. But I no longer will yearn to return and not sorry that an option to dine at a Village Tavern in Charlotte is gone forever. read more

Since opening up shop in Winston-Salem forty years ago, Village Tavern has expanded to include eight locations. Perhaps because of its longevity, the impression I got of it was of a dated brunch/lunch spot patronized by well-to-do seniors, and so it never claimed a high spot on my to-try list. After paying the Greensboro location a visit, however, that perception has somewhat changed. Village Tavern occupies a large building with plenty of seating, and though they keep busy, they seem set up to accommodate the volume. My wife and I showed up for lunch on a Monday and had no wait for a table in the bar area, which was nicely appointed. Think classy without feeling stuffy. Just as the restaurant is sizeable, so too goes the menu. Apps, soups, sandwiches, salads, entrees, tacos, burgers, and pizzas are all offered here. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options, and you'd be hard-pressed to find something not to your liking. We ended up going with fish and chips and shrimp and grits. The food arrived quickly, and our server was polite and responsive throughout the meal. Shrimp and grits is one of my go-to dishes, and no two places do it the same way. Village Tavern's version uses white grits and bacon rather than tasso ham. Purists may quibble, but I found it excellent. The grits were creamy without being too heavily cheesy, the bacon added a hint of smokiness, they didn't skimp on the shrimp, and the mushrooms were a nice touch. The fish and chips boasted crisp and generously battered cod. It wasn't on par with what you'd find in a seafood bar, but it did not disappoint. The sauteed spinach - substituted in for coleslaw - was tasty as well though the fries were only so-so. While I was wrong about Village Tavern's décor (more appealing than I thought) and clientele (more diverse), I was right about its price point. Both entrees ran north of twenty. While the fish and chips offered a good amount of food for the money, the shrimp and grits felt like a dinner price for a lunch portion. All told, Village Tavern is a solid jack-of-all-trades restaurant. It offers a little bit of everything and seems to execute well enough. It's more likely to leave you satisfied than impressed, but the service and atmosphere make it worth your while. read more

I finally made my way over to the infamous Village Tavern for dinner. It was a wonderful experience! The service is professional, friendly, and prompt. The atmosphere is moody with dim lights and dark wood accents...as you'd expect from a tavern...but don't let the name fool ya. It's an upscale dining establishment; The food was absolutely delicious! Plus I made it out on a Wednesday (Wine) night so it was 1/2 price glasses and bottles! We ordered the crab dip as an appetizer and it was everything you want a crab dip to be. Large sums of crab meat, creamy and cheesey too! For dinner I ordered the Firecracker Shrimp Tacos & subbed sweet potato fries for the rice and loved every bite! So much so, the only photo I captured was from the leftovers I brought home. I simply cannot rave about Village Tavern enough!! I've been here many times, but I want helping them. So now it's time for a review! The place is gorgeous with a huge open fireplace in the middle of the dining room. The bar area is just as beautiful with high top tables and booths. You can go here in your Sunday best or jeans and a t-shirt. The bar is fully equipped with drafts as well as cocktails. The food is always amazing. The spring rolls are a favorite of mine. They come with a few sauces to try and the "garnish" is also delish. It's like a little salad for your spring rolls, so don't sleep on that and give it a try. It has a very light dressing on it and if you like greens, you won't be disappointed. The avacado toast comes with a perfectly poached egg on top. I'm normally one who puts ketchup on anything potato, but you don't need a thing on these hash browns. The servers and bartenders are always super friendly and helpful. Food comes out pretty fast even if they are busy. They are known for making a lot of their own sauces and dressings. And the butter cake....you gotta try the butter cake!! read more

So I ordered the grilled meatloaf with mashed potatoes and sautéed spinach. It was ok. Even with the mushroom sauce it was kind of dry but it had a good flavor. (I even ordered extra sauce) So don't think gravy, it's more of a wine based sauce, even though I've never had wine, I've had wine sauces, so that's what this reminds me of.
