We've driven past village tavern at least a hundred times and it has always been packed. The few times we attempted to go previously, the wait was longer than we could manage. Tonight was finally the evening when we were able to go, despite a bit of a waitlist still (45 minutes). The hostess was on point with her estimate and also very quick to get us seated within the promised time frame. I also found out they offer reservations, so we will use that option loving forward. First of all-service was excellent. Our waiter came to the table within a moment of being seated to get started with waters and non-alcoholic options, and was quick to check back up on us and see if we were ready or had questions. He made several great recommendations on both food and drinks. My only caveat was that my 10 oz steak was a bit on the salty side, but this may be due to the aging process. It was cooked to a beautiful medium per my request, and both my sides (asparagus and loaded baked potato) were yummy, well cooked and seasoned perfectly. My husband got a pasta with pancetta and caramelized onions, and it was absolutely delicious. Suggested wines were paired well with both entrees. We opted to get a few more drinks with dessert, and both were also very good. The bartenders are not stingy in their pours! We also split the butter cake for dessert and I will say that Paula Dean would have been proud of that cake. It was melt-in-your mouth richness paired with a slightly tangy fruit sauce, fresh berries and a tasty vanilla ice cream. The restaurant was pretty crowded, and parking is always at a premium, but we were able to get parked close and quickly in the rain. VT has a pretty expansive food menu along with a wide variety of wine and cocktails. My husband decided to try the paloma, and I skipped the alcohol for this trip. Quay was our server, and his service was excellent! His recommendations felt very sincere, especially with so many options to choose from. The chips were hot and fresh. My salad was delicious and a big portion size. The interior was nice! It gave me ski lodge lobby vibes. My only complaint was the wait time to be seated. We had reservations and it took 25 minutes past the reservation time once they did seat us. Despite that, service was quick and attentive once we were seated. The Village Tavern is a building on its own in a shopping center. The parking lot was incredibly crowded, so we had to park a little bit further away from the restaurant. It's not common to find gluten free crab cakes, let alone really fresh and delicious gluten free crab cakes. When the craving hits, Village Tavern delivers! The occasion was a rare get together to catch up with close friends. We sat for our lunch reservation at 12:30 and by the time we left they had begun sitting their dinner reservations. Our server was soo very patient as we took all afternoon. We ate, paid and then stayed and stayed. Eventually we ordered agai, coffee then dessert. By the time we walked out the host said "have a nice evening". I really appreciate the VT staff, they were kind in letting us turn our booth table into our home for the day. Outside of great gf crab cakes, they have a yummy gf pasta option for their chicken and penne dish which is a must for their creamy pesto paired with crispy pancetta. This time I had another craveable dish, the beet salad. The golden beets and vinaigrette are super tasty and it is a really filling salad. My guests ordered the spinach tortilla dip which is the only thing of theirs I have not cared for. The ingredients all make sense but being a Texas girl, this one didn't come together for me. I still plan to dip back in as often as I can for the rest of their tasty menu. On cool evening I prefer to sit outside but their main dining is cozy and well spaced. They did try to squeeze us all at one high top table by the bar, but I think it was due to the request of the birthday girl. 4 of us were able to move so that we could have space to truly enjoy our food. We had heard great things about this place and decided to stop in for a late lunch. It's a cozy setting with a fireplace, warm amber lighting and a nice music playlist. Our server was Tyler and let me just say he was amazing! He was very attentive and made sure we had a good experience knowing that this was our first time dining there. Fluffy, buttery and so tasty. Everything was prepared so well. My hubby decided he must try their carrot cake and it was amazing! It was a shareable portion so I also indulged. The cake was so moist and the frosting was perfection! I regretfully did not take any pictures of the dishes but trust me, it was delicious and we will definitely be back! Originally we were told the wait would be about 45 minutes, but ended up only waiting about 15. We were seated in the bar area on a high too table. Servers visited pretty quickly to get our drink orders, and were ready to take our order when they brought them back. Having trouble deciding, my wife and I decided to split an order of the nachos. Apparently, village Tavern has some work to do with getting good managers in place. I got a birthday email with $10 off, if I spent $25. Didn't see any fine print, never had a problem in the past. My bill came out to $25 and maybe $.28. When I went to get rung up, they had to send the manager over, he whispers to me, you were so close, unfortunately it's before taxes is what the offer is. We went on Sunday for an early lunch. No line around 12 pm. Service was fast in the beginning - then it got busier and was taking longer than expected. Great food though. 1. Fried oysters - crispy on the outsider and tender inside with great flavor. 2. Crab dip - never disappoints 3. My kids took me out for my birthday, however since it's on a week day, my son works nights, so we opted for Sunday afternoon. I didn't know they had an all day brunch menu, surprise! I thought it was great. My omelet was very fluffy and delicious. As you can see from the photo's almost didn't get them. Everyone was chowing down. Food was on point. Our server was a nice young gentleman, but didn't bring the butter that goes with the muffin. I didn't say anything because I was full already. He was pleasant, and kept our drinks full. Since opening up shop in Winston-Salem forty years ago, Village Tavern has expanded to include eight locations. Perhaps because of its longevity, the impression I got of it was of a dated brunch/lunch spot patronized by well-to-do seniors, and so it never claimed a high spot on my to-try list. After paying the Greensboro location a visit, however, that perception has somewhat changed. Village Tavern occupies a large building with plenty of seating, and though they keep busy, they seem set up to accommodate the volume. My wife and I showed up for lunch on a Monday and had no wait for a table in the bar area, which was nicely appointed. Think classy without feeling stuffy. Just as the restaurant is sizeable, so too goes the menu. Apps, soups, sandwiches, salads, entrees, tacos, burgers, and pizzas are all offered here. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options, and you'd be hard-pressed to find something not to your liking. We ended up going with fish and chips and shrimp and grits. The food arrived quickly, and our server was polite and responsive throughout the meal. Shrimp and grits is one of my go-to dishes, and no two places do it the same way. Village Tavern's version uses white grits and bacon rather than tasso ham. Purists may quibble, but I found it excellent. The grits were creamy without being too heavily cheesy, the bacon added a hint of smokiness, they didn't skimp on the shrimp, and the mushrooms were a nice touch. The fish and chips boasted crisp and generously battered cod. It wasn't on par with what you'd find in a seafood bar, but it did not disappoint. The sauteed spinach - substituted in for coleslaw - was tasty as well though the fries were only so-so. While I was wrong about Village Tavern's décor (more appealing than I thought) and clientele (more diverse), I was right about its price point. Both entrees ran north of twenty. While the fish and chips offered a good amount of food for the money, the shrimp and grits felt like a dinner price for a lunch portion. All told, Village Tavern is a solid jack-of-all-trades restaurant. It offers a little bit of everything and seems to execute well enough. It's more likely to leave you satisfied than impressed, but the service and atmosphere make it worth your while. read more

So let's start off by saying I went at noon on a Friday so I just knew they were going to be busy and they were but that meant absolutely nothing. We had 12pm reservations and were sat right away by our waitress amy who was super attentive and kind. She brought us waters and took our appitizer order and then came back for drink orders and food orders. When I say the food came out so quickly and we were almost done eating by 1235 it was insane because they were busy but so efficient. The food was delicious too. My salad was massive and tasted great, my old fashion nice and strong and i loved the variety they offered. The chicken in the chicken teriyaki was nice and tender and the club sandwich was piled high that my dad barely finished half. The calamari was perfectly fried not chewy I only wish I had more. I was quite disappointed when I learned about a year ago that the Charlotte location of Village Tavern had permanently closed. I had always enjoyed my dinners there. Was in the Greensboro area yesterday and visited Village Tavern there. Maybe an off night, moderately busy on a Wednesday, but the food I remembered as great was way below average. The meatloaf with Madeira sauce had to have had the recipe or ingredients changed. Average at best. The sauce used to be amazing- rich and flavorful. Last night was overly thickened with flour and unappealing. Would never get it again (probably don't have to worry since my desire to return is not there. We had nachos to share initially. Large portion but soggy generally and mediocre- except for the quantity not special at all. One person in our small group had a quesadilla- comment was "I've probably had this in various places 25 times- this was the worst." Filling tasted like out of a can- not fresh, hot, or flavorful. Non-traditional sauces. No guacamole. Maybe just purchased in bulk from a food wholesaler and reheated? I didn't taste the chicken Marsala so cannot comment- it looked fine and was a plentiful serving. Based on reviews of this restaurant by others, I'm in a minority thinking it to be far below average. But I no longer will yearn to return and not sorry that an option to dine at a Village Tavern in Charlotte is gone forever. read more

Our server decided to memorize everyone's orders instead of writing them down, which might sound impressive, but it did not work out well at all. When the food came, multiple meals were wrong, and people at our table had to wait while the mistakes were fixed. The atmosphere is moody with dim lights and dark wood accents...as you'd expect from a tavern...but don't let the name fool ya.
