I read an article in the newspaper about amazing new varietal Greek wines. I was dying to try them but I knew from experience I was unlikely to find them easily. In the past I have had to pester wine shops to order things for me. By way of contrast I walked into Vines on Pine and, just to my right of the front door, they had them! They were at rock-bottom prices and they tasted better than bottles I've bought at more than twice the price. That made me so happy I just had to thank VonP for their awesome curation. read more

Hard to find good wine store in the heights! The staff was super friendly and was not pushy at all. They definitely give you the space you need to select the right wine for you but are always around in the event you need a suggestion with with wine selection or with general pronunciation (My French is not the Best ) The store is very well organized and makes everything very accessible without feeling pertinacious. They have weekly specials that allow to pick up a decent bottle at a bargain price. If you are not sure what exactly you want, the staff gives great advice and is more than happy to help. I want to like this place but I just can't. The selection of red wines is good but there is not a lot of variety of white wine. They also need new staff. Every time I go in there the employees are chatting with friends or on their phones. When I ask a question I'm met with distant stares and unhelpful answers. As a customer I feel simultaneously ignored and disrespected when I go in there. I'll be taking my business to Cabrini Wines on 181st St from now on. I love love love this store. The owner is just the friendliest, most knowledgeable, jazz-loving wine enthusiast. He really gets to know his people. I've been coming here for nearly 10 years. This store really shines in its combination of selection of excellent wines at ~$10 and the excellent selection of pricier, more select wines for special occasions. I live very close to here, and of all the things in this neighborhood, Vines on Pine is the one place that I'll probably come back to the neighborhood for when I move. What stands out about this place to me is the way it is curated. The owner is frequently in there jovially stocking the shelves. You can tell he maintains the selections himself, and there is not a bad tasting bottle in the store. I've never been to a place that dispenses advice on wine more willingly and more aptly. I'm pretty sure everyone who works here is a sommelier in training. I'm not just saying that, I can recall hearing the store clerks discussing their studies once. I often walk in and say "I'm eating [x] for dinner tonight, what would go well with that", and they always are quick on their feet with multiple contrasting options and the different ways they'll interact with my food. One time, they suggested a wine that I've bought a bottle of almost every week since then. They have something for everyone here; I usually stick to the cheap bins in the middle, but there's something for every price range. I usually go in on Friday afternoons when they have tastings, and have tried some wines that I couldn't help but get a hold of after a taste. The selection of spirits that they have is pretty limited, but very good quality. If I could make one criticism about this place, it's that I wish they had a wider selection of cheap spirits, but since they are a wine shop I can't fault them a star. read more

Great wine selection but shady cashier. I have been a loyal customer at this store for 3 years. Today, I tried to purchase 2 bottles of Prosecco and proceeded to checkout using Apple Pay. After my iPhone tapped me with a clear notification that the payment went through, the cashier told me to pay again. I processed the payment again without a doubt, thinking they wouldn't scam me after periodically buying their products over 3 years. After the payment went through, something didn't seem right, so I checked my bank account and found out that they indeed double charged me. What was more troubling was that, when I told the cashier about the situation, the cashier did not sound at all surprised and did not even try to verify the duplicate charges as if he knew he double charged me. While they refunded the money, it is indeed a potentially alarming business conduct that customers should watch out for. read more

I moved around the corner from this place in December. I've lived in this area previously and had no plans of shopping with a new wine shop as I had one I loved on Broadway. However, proximity to home won me over and I dropped in one day. First thing I noticed was the use of space was great, it's a tiny shop but I don't feel crowded even during peak hours. The staff is really friendly and will either spend time with you or give you space. I'm often beat from my decepticon of a commute and the staff are always quick and friendly. Sometimes I'm disgustingly lazy and the team will deliver my wine and put the charges right on my house account! This gem is the perfect example of a neighborhood shop and I couldn't be happier. Very nice selection, with a bunch of price ranges and grape varieties. Small liquor shelf in the back too with a bunch of everything (I even found cachaca which is not a liquor a lot of stores sell). Good selection of wine. The manager Terry is super nice and very knowledgable. If they don't carry something you love just chat with Terry as he sometimes can get it into the shop. My only complaint is the delivery - it it the worst. Takes well over an hour for delivery and when you call to ask where your order is they give you the standard lie "it just left". Great selection and typically extremely helpful owner/staff and a super pleasant neighborhood ambiance, however the kids that were left in charge this time could not be bothered. One of the young ladies was having a conversation on her cell, when I requested help she yelled out my request to the other young lady, who was chatting away with someone else (not sure if a customer or a friend). Without turning to me she handed me the bottle she had in her hand and said there you go and continued to chat. When I asked for a specific wine or another option she turned annoyed and showed me the other option all the while still chatting with the other person. A simple lesson in customer service would be great: greet, offer help, try some eye contact, maybe a smile. read more

This is a wonderful shop, the kind that would make ANY neighborhood worth living in. Can't understand bizarre/bogus "review" of some Alex character who complains about "corked" Bourgogne (if there is ever ANY problem w/ wine bought at this fine store-- simply with cork being improperly pulled, never mind defective (how unusual) you bring it back, it is replaced, you are always treated beyond well-- directing people to shop at another local store (Cabrini Wines, which has its own merits) immediately "blows of the spot' (as has long been said in this hood) of whatever clown is posting this nonsense. The only outright crap here is a "review" like that of "Alex I," which does not reflect the experience of anyone who has ever shopped ONCE at this lovely establishment. YELP needs some better gatekeeping and/or guidelines regarding its "reviewers" I do not know what "Alex I's" motives are (perhaps fishing for credit card numbers?) in posting such- you want to talk about crap? But this store- and the fine, very reputable distributors- like Rosenthal- who provide much of its Bourgogne and Bordeaux- do not deserve to be slurred or spammed (not does the Yelp site) by such an obvious TROLL.
