On my journey back to Maryland from Northern California in March, my fiancé and I stopped in Houston on our way to NOLA. We were hoping to have some lobster before making it to our accommodations for the evening. Unfortunately no such luck can be found after 5pm when everyone else usually has dinner. Asiantown in Houston is famous for many delicacies, but as I been told and heard from miles away, you must have lobster available at virtually any Asian restaurant in town. It's cheap and it's fresh, can I say more to persuade you? I'm an out-of-towner, lobster by my square is sold by the pound and it isn't cheap neither is having it at a restaurant where they upcharge 100 percent and more. Anyways. My fiancé and I ordered salted fish fried rice, sautéed snowpea greens, salt & spicy pepper pork ribs (his obsession) salt & spicy pepper shrimp. Everything was hot and delicious, as I remember restaurant Chinese food to be! The snowpea greens were crunchy and the ribs were fleshy and had a kick. We had enough to take back to our hotel! This place is great for a reasonable price, family-style meals for lunch and dinner time. I came during lunch time, and they have a menu separately for lunch specials for $5.87 from 11:00 am-2:50 pm. (I think valid for weekdays only, but I am not too sure.) My cousin and I ordered the deep fried crispy whole sole fish and baby bok choy sauteed with garlic. This comes with a pot of rice with the dishes. We didn't have to wait long for the food to come. The deep fried sole fish was delicious especially a good sized fish to share, and you can tell it is perfectly fried as it is crispy to eat with its sauce. The baby bok choy is enjoyable to eat to balance with any protein dish. FYI, there is a section for to-go boxes so you can go grab what you need to pack food. Overall, I enjoyed eating at this place. Since my last review in 2008, my hun and I have had lunch here almost every weekend. We have introduced a number of friends to this restaurant and they have all loved it. Even my out of town friends salivate just asking for it when they arrive in Houston. It is a small place, lots of tanks with live seafood AND it is located in an asian owned strip mall with 10,000 other shops surrounding it. The carpet is old, the employees are mostly NOT american born, but they speak enough english to seat you at a table and take your order. Shoot, if my lunch costs $40 for 5 people plus beer, and leftovers AND our bellies are happy?...I don't care if the carpet is old. It's just an asian thing. We eat pretty healthy so our immune system ain't too bad. And we aren't too afraid of the dirty carpet, old chairs and funky entrance door because I use the new chopsticks and wash my hands before and after every meal. Oh yea, this is my lunch review. It is sitdown place, so don't expect to do an express lunch, but they do come out decently quick. I love the egg and shrimp omelet. Another of my favorites is the fried fish which is thin and crispy. This place was solid every time we visited. Do yourself a favor and order the lobster special. If I recall the lobster deal correctly, it was to order a lobster and pair with 1-2 dishes for a special price. That was a pretty good deal. Service: They want you to order so they can cook your food and bring them to you ASAP. There is nothing wrong with that. Just don't expect any chit-chat or small talk. Food: Like I said, go for the lobster dish. There are many variations on how to prepare lobster so pick one that you think you'd like. Other than lobster, another pretty good dish is the razor clams. The salted shrimp is also a 'can't miss' for my wife and me. Every now and then, our group also order fried soft shell crab, which is pretty good as well. In summary, I think their seafood items are pretty solid all around. The price is good which keeps us coming back. I'd give Vinh Hoa 4.5 star rating. Not very impressive at all, at least for dinner. My family got the 6-person dinner for $98, and yes, it had fish, lobster, crab, and clams, but nothing really tasted that great. The tofu that they used in the tofu, scallop, and veggie stir-fry tasted old, as if they were using leftover tofu from a different dish with different seasoning. It wasn't very appealing. In all, I'd say, yes, they do give you quite a bit of seafood (as the other two reviewers mentioned), but I don't know if I'd come back here for the quality of the dishes. One of Houston Chinatown's classic establishments, Vinh Hoa specializes a hybrid of Chinese and Vietnamese banquet-style cuisines. Although Vinh Hoa never fails to serve higher-than-average quality, the restaurant is unfortunately in the awkward market placement where it's too expensive for casual dining and too dirty for fine dining. To be specific, I thought Vinh Hoa's dishes like the stir-fried lobsters were fresher and more delicious than other Chinatown restaurants. The stir-fried clams with chives came with really huge clams, and the Vietnamese clay-pot bass was perfect with rice. However, the difference in quality compared to its Chinatown competitors was not enough to justify the higher price point and the smaller portions. Most dishes are priced between $13-25 each while similar dishes elsewhere are generally around $10 at larger portion. Ironically, the lobsters were the only dish that was comparable in price with much better quality. The decor has not been updated and while that may appeal to the older Asian generations that don't mind, the ambiance is not exactly suitable as a business meal or other situations that require a classier setting. In other words, the price was too high for casual dining, and the place was not fancy enough for fine dining. While I find the food here delicious, I would recommend Vinh Hoa only as a place to impress your friends with good Chinese food like in situations that you are welcoming them in town or something. It came with a big bowl of egg drop soup with crab meat, salt and pepper fried fish nuggets, salt and pepper shrimp, sautéed clams, Chinese broccoli, and a plate of combination fried rice. The only thing that I didn't care for that much was the fish nuggets, which could have used more flavor and could have been a bit more crispy. Everything else was extremely good. We also ordered a plate of buttered fried (sounds heavenly already) soft shell crab. Best part of our meal! The flavors were all there. For being fried and tossed in butter, I did not feel guilty eating it at all! Make sure you make use of the salt, pepper, and lime dipping sauce that comes with it; it is a great complement! The best part of this dish for me was the bed of watercrest and sliced tomatoes that it was served on. The fresh veggies were drizzled with a heavenly sauce mixture of sugar and vinegar before the soft shell crab rests on top. $17.99 for this. We left abundantly stuffed! We had a party of 7 and were seated promptly since we luckily beat the dinner rush. Not long before we sat down all the food came out very quickly. One of my favorite hidden gems here on Houston. If you are entertaining guests this is a great place to go to for lunch! Lunch specials are under $7.00 a plate for a very generous portion! Dishes are served family style... While I'll admit that it's not the best in china town it's not bad either. For the lunch special pricing you can get fresh seafood (fish, clams, shrimp, etc) for under $7!! Service is typical Asian restaurant service. They are pretty quick with getting your orders in and out to the table but they can seem pushy or rude. I haven't had any real problems with service here. They are pretty good at refills and prebussing tables and if you ever need anything you can just flag down any waiter. Apparently others have found my hidden gem. I love this place and love it even more after the remodel. A side note, if you have specific dietary needs don't come here communication between both is difficult and this is food from another culture. It may not be what you expect. Service can sometimes be slow. I enjoy this place a lot and advise you to get a soda or tea. Water isn't up to par. Bring your own sweetener for tea if needed. Our staple dishes to get are the King Pao and the Thandoh Style Chicken (similar to orange chicken). It is really family style portions and you get white steamed rice. I also like the vegetables so pick your favorite. Lunch is 5.35 per entree and the drinks are kinda a splurge if you are keeping a tight budget. I really love this place and I come as often as I can. My mom and I went to this restaurant this morning and at first sight there was no greetings and all ( the restaurant was empty, only one table). In my younger years, my aunt always took me here for weekend dinner, so coming back in my adult years certainly carries some nostalgia for me. Lunch menu is very affordable, each dish generously sized for $6. We ended up sharing 3 dishes between the two of us, but we generally have smaller appetites than others, so you might even have room to try 4 dishes to share between two people. Atmosphere can be intimidating, as there are tanks of sea creatures along one side of the dining room. Service is "old-school Asian" = take your order, then leave you alone the rest of the time, but I enjoy that and they were nice, quick, and prompt whenever they did stop by. Salt & Pepper Squid were proper substantial pieces and had a good amount of crunch from the batter. Deep Fried Crispy Whole Sole Fish definitely satiated my craving for fried whole fish, although this one was more crisp than flesh. Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce definitely hits the spot when you want to add balance out the meal with some veg. read more

This place is a classic for my family. My parents love going here and I don't blame them. The food is amazing. Walking in, you can tell that the place is very spacious with lot of seatings. We ordered the razor clam with basil, hot and sour fish soup,pork rib simmered in fish cause, braised catfish in claypot. It was all delicious! The clams were full of flavor. However, it might not be your cup of tea if you don't like clams because the clam flavor is very strong. My favorite is the catfish dish! I don't think I have ever taste anything so flavorful and the fish was perfectly cooked. It was tender and melted in your mouth. It was so good I came back the next day and had it again. The pork rib was amazing, and I love how they leave the bone on. I feel that it added so much more flavor to the pork. The soup reminded me of my mom's cooking, and it was so comforting to taste the warm sweet and sour broth. I think I went a little bit overboard ordering so much food but it was so worth it.
