I accidentally discovered VINH XUONG BAKERY when we went to the Far East Center on Federal Boulevard to have dinner at Pho Hong on the evening of Wednesday, June 19, 2024, and parked right in front of the bakery. I had to go inside and check them out. At the time of our visit, the venue could welcome no more than an estimated six patrons at a time inside. Basically, a hole in the wall. Upon entry, we were met with a table that was set about three to four feet from the front door that served as the counter for ordering, a fridge of cold food items for sale, and a wall of shelves offering packaged dried fruits and other sweets. Adjacent to the front table was a metal rack of baked goods like sesame balls, almond cookies, Chinese donuts, etc. Yelp shows some photos of a much bigger space that was open to customers. Those days are long gone and if the place is still at the same exact location, I didn't see any trace of its prior semblance. I was very excited to find one of my favourite pastries found only at Vietnamese establishments, pate chaud. I bought three at $5 each to bring home as well as a couple of che from the fridge; Che Bap (coconut milk, tapioca pearl, sugar, corn, pandan, salt) & Che Ba Ba (Coconut milk, Tapioca pearls, Taro, Sweet potatoes, Yam, Sugar) at $3.50 each. My digital receipt's total came out to $23.76 for the five items plus tax. Everything that I purchased was yummy. Service was nice and friendly. I did feel like I was blindly buying things, though, because I didn't see price tags on anything and there were no prices posted anywhere. I found out pricing only after I received my receipt. Three things that I wish: 1. They would revert to their original bakery layout. The previous store interior appeared much more welcoming and just looked WAY better for a customer experience. 2. 5th for 2022 It has been awhile since my visit and ... and the whole place.... is in shambles. That was my 1st observation. They have moved everything around and made the place look like a fort with plastic screen to separate the customers from the rest of the bakery. This made it very hard to see what they had to offer and I could not even see the menu. My mission for the day was to order bahn mi and compare to Bale La and could not make out the choices since I couldn't really see anything. After confirming with the owner, yes, bahn mi is available and did not know what to get but did see glimpse of combination and that's what I ordered. Came back after few minutes and it was ready and $6 was the damage. Brought it home and opened it up about 2 hours after ordering it. To my surprise, the bread was still crunch, filled with plenty of sliced assorted meats and pickled vegies and spreads. It was pretty large sandwich for $6 and definitely worth it. I think Ba Le has it for about $5 but lot skinnier and also bread is different. Vinh Xuong offers bread that is closer to Italian (softer crust) verses Ba Le being closer to French banquette with hard crust. Small place run by old Vietnamese couple. So far we've had the fried sesame balls and it's the best I've had in Denver! Reminded me of Cali. It's with mung beans filling instead of taro which is traditional Vietnamese sesame balls and none of that weird taro filling you get from dim sum place. We pop them in air fryer for 4 min at 290 and it's seriously so good. This place is for all your childhood Vietnamese treats. Like banh da lợn, banh tiêu, all kinds of Che. Pate Chaud pastry. Was really looking forward to getting some authentic banh mi after reading this place was better and cheaper than another more highly rated place. Got here early in the morning to pick some up for our hike in the Rockies. Once we got there we saw that it was in a little Chinatown plaza. The front looked so dirty and shabby. Hesitated at 1st. And they closed the inside of the bakery so you just ordered from her right up front. We picked up 7 banhmi to go with the toppings on the side. 4 bbq pork and 3 combo. It was expensive for each. $6. Isn't what we are used to coming from Texas where great banhmi in Houston is $3 each. So these better be good. 1st the bbq pork looked different than Texas bbq pork. So we took it to go not too happy with the order even though the owner was nice. Stuck it in our cooler for later. However when we dug into it after our meal we were pleasantly surprised. They were so tasty. The bread freshly made that morning she said was still soft and chewy. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. We could have used more radish though but wow pretty good banh mis. A textbook Banh Mi at a total hole-in-the-wall spot off Federal Blvd. From my research, Vinh Xuong has been a staple in Denver for the last few decades. The legends remains in tact. Look man, I would do highly regrettable things in order to stuff a Banh Mi in my face. I've been conducting an unofficial "find the best Banh Mi in Denver tour." It's amazing how high the quality is here! Before I moved from Florida, I had no idea about the Vietnamese population in Denver and their prominence in the local culinary scene. Now the bakery doesn't stand alone as a date night destination. The space is thrown together with cardboard boxes, random shelving, and an interior that has seen better days. At the end of the day, you're not coming here for chic atmosphere, you're coming here for outrageous Vietnamese grab and go foods. And damn, the Grilled Pork Banh Mi is phenomenal. Juicy, tangy and crunchy decadence. At $5, I don't understand how there's not a line wrapped around the building at all times. He was no where in sight and the cashier was a little Vietnamese auntie. I asked her for the total as she looked at my wallet with $60 cash hanging out of it. We tried two combination banh-mis: a regular one made with a short baguette and another one made with rice paper wrap. The regular one was fantastic, with just the right amount of meat and fillings. Along with the bread, each bite was better than the last. The one made with rice paper is a good alternative for someone who wants to avoid bread, but I can't say that it's as good as the regular version. All in all, service was good, food was great, and the price was adequate. I would return. Absolutely love their sweets. The owner has been here since the Far East Center opened in the late 80s, too. The selection is a lot smaller, but what she has is amazing. I make a special trip to come here whenever I am in the area. My absolute favorites are the fried sesame balls with mung bean and the Che Dua 3 Mau that had coconut milk, red beans, white beans, garbanzo beans and, red kidney beans. Split one with the family if you have never had lentils as a sweet as it is an acquired taste. They also have a green jelly layered with mung bean that is exceptionally good when freshly made. I follow several food bloggers on Instagram and I came across a posting for this Vietnamese bakery. I screenshotted it and kept it in my phone for a couple months. I happen to be up here in Westminster and decided to explore Federal boulevard. This part of town is all ethnic and there is so much food you can't throw a rock without hitting a different restaurant. I ended up at the Far East Center, and poked around in the gift shop, took photos of the two painted wall murals, walked around the grocery store, had a boba/jelly smoothie, and went into the bakery. Yes, the plaza is dated; yes, it's kind of rinky dinky; yes, it is packed to the absolute rafters! However, I am a big fan of hunting down ethnic food, and I want to go where the real worker bee's are. And this is where it is at! The nicest auntie helped me. She was tickled to see that I had screenshotted the Instagram post, and helped me choose a corn & tapioca 'Che', she led me towards a combination Bahn mi, and I snagged two of the huge almond cookies. She then did all the work of making the sandwich and I did note that she used fresh gloves and it looked very clean and nice. Her smiles and pleasantness really did make my day. The French bread on my sandwich was crackling and soft on the inside and was light as air, the quick pickled vegetables were awesome, and I believe I had a pork and Pate topping. I think the cookies were $1.50 each, I believe the che was approximately $3, and my sandwich was about $6 or so. I think these prices are phenomenal considering my mango boba was over $6 on the other side of the plaza. And there is no burger joint or ViewHouse or smashburger that sells anything near six bucks for a sandwich! I 100% absolutely will be going to the Alameda location and enjoying being able to dine inside! The only possible suggestion I can make is that even a handwritten sheet of the days sandwiches and prices posted on the plexiglass would help the uninitiated in ordering. Look for authenticity. It doesn't get much more authentic than a friendly elderly lady behind the counter, playing with her granddaughter, taking a few minutes to go into the back room of the bakery to create the best Vietnamese sandwich you've ever had. I went with the combo, as that was the purveyor's recommendation. While I'm not 100% sure of the meaty combination therein (pork, pâté, other?), it was tasty, the veggies were flavorful and fresh, and the bread warm, with just the right chew. The only improvement would be slightly less hard/crusty bread, but that's splitting hairs. If you want legit banh sammies, you want Vinh Xuong. read more

YASSSS! My husband and I ventured the Lakewood area to check out the Vietnamese community only because once I make my final move to Denver - I'll need to know where to buy my Asian things. Now I know there are 2 locations for Vinh Xuong - one being nicer looking than the other. Google maps took me to the older establishment so I'm not sure if I'm reviewing on the correct location, but nonetheless the banh mi dac biet that we had was bomb. We showed up to this kind of "run down" Vietnamese bakery that looked like it had seen better days.. so my first reaction to this was.. "YASSS, this right here is authentic AF!". Reminds me of home (city heights in SD). The owners were really nice and it looks like they usually crank out baked goods - not so much of sandwiches. To my surprise when they gave us our sandwich- it was so loaded with all the good stuff! Generous amount of head cheese, pate, pickled daikon/carrots, etc. I was quite ecstatic for this banh mi and it actually filled me up. Fellow Yelper Fia R and I were in the area when we discovered this banh mi specialist on the Yelp app. The large counter was packed full of fried bread, moon cakes, and a mix of sweets and treats. The banh mi menu was written on the mirror facing the refrigerator, and the box-filled antiquated décor and lack of seating made it a pure hole in the wall. They bake baguettes on site and foot traffic seemed slow but steady during the lunch hour. I got the Original Banh Mi ($2.75) that came with a huge fresh and warm toasted baguette filled with Vietnamese BBQ pork, ham, headcheese, pickled daikon and carrots, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno, pate, butter spread, and salt and pepper. The baguette was truly outstanding with crisp, crunchy and soft textures in all the right places. The baguettes from other fast food places usually cut into my mouth but in this case the textures were excellent and easy to bite into. The pate was discernible and so was the fresh jalapeno and cucumber that came with a nice crunch on each bite. I wished there were more meat, cilantro, and pickled daikon and carrots, but the giant torpedo-like sub more than made up for it. Retrospectively, I've had better taste-wise, but the sheer size and freshness made the experience superb. Service seemed understaffed as the sandwiches took some time to arrive. What a treat, finally getting to check this place out. I occasionally have business over on Federal, so I stopped in at a place I've been before in the Far East shopping center (all SE Asian businesses) for lunch buffet, and eagerly made the cross-lot trek to Vinh Xuong - *finally*. :) The important stuff: 1) They do not have a credit/debit card reader and they do not take checks. Bring cash. 2) The cashier is a kindly elderly woman who fortunately DOES speak understandable English and understands your questions if you are a first timer. 3) $10-15 and you will walk out with enough quality delectable baked goods that you'll feel like shrieking that you just won the bakery lottery. The store is fairly small but has people coming in and going out periodically, both casual customers and people who've placed quantity orders. So, here's my "for Dummies" guide to some things you can try here and what to expect: "Yellow pound cake slices with custard swirls" - That's what it looked like, and that's what it tasted like. Cake not overly moist or dry, custard chilled and delicious. You may see a variant that looks like a St. Patrick's Day version of it; I was told it's not mint. $1.75/slice, I think. Chè - see Wikipedia. Seriously, that'll describe it very well. I had the Chè chuoi - made from banana slices, small tapioca balls, tapioca pudding and a few other things I think. If you like boba drinks, you'll probably love this stuff. They have about a dozen different flavors. $1.75/cup. A steal. "Banana bread" - I kid you not, this is a meal for $1.75. I measured: about 5" by 3" x 1.5" - it's a *mammoth* slice. You are hoping it's the moistest, perfectly spiced and sweetened piece of banana bread you've ever had. It's not that :/ - but it's still wonderful. It's...very dense, VERY moist, and it kinda gives you the feeling you are eating a slice of banana bread *dough*. Totally worth getting -- if they have any left when you get there. If you were getting a slice like this in Cherry Creek, you'd expect to pay $7 for it. If they even had something this massive. "Small" (BIG! 4" diameter, 1" thick) or "large" (bump that by 25%) cookie that has a big indent in the middle that looks like it's filled with lemony goodness: You are hoping it's a big, soft, chewy lemon-centered cookie. It's not. It's crunchy and crumbly and no idea what the yellow part is in the middle. This was my sole disappointment going there; but they can't all be winners I guess. It's not bad, but it doesn't kick ass to the level everything else did. 75c for the "small", 1.25 I think for the large. Fresh French-style bread rolls about 8" long: 65c. Kind of a no brainer. I sliced off 2" and ate it -- fragrant, slightly soft, definitely not dried out...bread heaven. I brought the rest to my Mom the next day, because I knew she'd appreciate it. "Some kind of meat-filled taquito" - 75c. Get this. It's OMG good. Fried but only very lightly greasy if at all. I'm getting a whole bag of these next time -- they were sitting in a container on the countertop near the register. "BBQ pork in a dumpling" - I *think* $1.25, but I don't quite remember. It looks exactly like someone cut off 1/3 of a softball -- in dough form. Haven't had it yet but looking to tomorrow for lunch. And finally, the big surprise for me: "sesame bread roll". If there were an evolutionary step between French bread and oil-fried doughnut (not cake but yeast based), it'd be this. It tastes like bread...fried very lightly in what I cannot describe as anything other than doughnut oil. I just had the last bite from a tightly wrapped package in the fridge 3 days after I got it: still good -- but you've *gotta* try it warm. Eyes fluttering in the back of their sockets good. Getting more of these next time, too...65c for a piece of heaven. All told I escaped my first visit with a bagful of delectable baked goods and dairy sweets for a little over $8. Cannot wait to get back in this area and get more awesomeness -- and try their banh mi or char siu - and maybe spring rolls to boot. read more

Bagel Deli (which was on the show, and is in south Denver) looks like a 3 star Michelin compared to this But man - they know how to make bread, some desserts, and -of course - Banh Mi sandwiches. They suddenly upgraded their menu (which shows 6 types of sandwiches). Always ordering here I get the feeling I'm really missing out. Like the locals know of a complex and exciting menu of Vietnamese food stuffs.. . .I just know BANH MI Each Banh Mi is made to order from their fresh bread supply. Fresh produce. Crispy goodness of bread and veggies, and the awesome flavor of pork/meatball/whatever to your taste. . . The taste is bar-none as good as ban mi gets. I have tried a few of their other items (such as some green thing i can't name) and it is all asian awesome. What to get (I don't know the actual names of some of the items, sorry!) Combination Banh Mi: SO GOOD. A nice crispy crunchy butter baguette smeared with this decadent pate and topped with a nice variety of meat. I love everything about it! SO GOOD. Meatball in Puff Pastry: (it looks like the ice cream part of a cartoon version of an ice cream cone. You know, the perfect dome scoop) this stuff is so insanely good. a huge meatball inside buttery flakey puff pastry! SO GOOD! I always leave the puff pastry last since it's THE BEST PART. Green Jello with Mung Bean: (it's obviously green jello with stripes of mung bean) This stuff is seriously like crack to me.
