I came here because I wanted a basic bottle of bubbly. I was impressed upon entering because it is a nice, clean store that's well laid out. The guy asked if I was on a budget or something, I wasn't offended. I didn't want to pay $400 for a bottle. He pointed me to prosecco and I bought the one in the fridge. It was easy in, ways out and the person helping me was nice. I found them when I was on my way from my stop to the train back to my hotel. They had a lot of good wines and if I were to be in the area longer, rather than leaving the next day, I would have bought bottles for the week. A friend swears by this UES wine shop. I walked in to check out the wine sale and buy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. They are having a 20% off sale on 12 bottles of wine or more. Kim Crawford is $19.99. It's $17.99 at 67th Street Spirits. It's $16.99 list, on sale for $14.97 at PJ Wines. Inflated prices that are barely competitive on sale with a 12 bottle minimum. Vintage Grape has been here years. It's a clean compact store. Employees are friendly and helpful. Window displays draw me inside. Prices are comparable to every other liquor store in the Upper East Side. The wine tasting is a great business technique. They know what they're doing! I've been to many a booze shop around this city, because: 1. Buying booze for people is how I make them like me. 2. I'm weak, and it would be hard to carry booze from my own neighborhood, so I buy it near whatever apartment I happen to be going to. And I must say, there are a lot of shitty liquor stores around. This is not one of them. The selection, both of liquor (bourbon and scotch at least) and affordable wine (the only kind of wine I buy), is very solid for the size of the shop, the staff is helpful and friendly, and they were even doing a tasting! I'm always wondering around the wines in search for my next Bottle. I go for the Tempranillo's, Malbecs, Cabs usually. Yet they have a nice Prosecco, Sauvignon Blanc, & Rose selection, as well. The staff here is always so friendly and helpful, and they typically have tastings of different spirits for you to try while shopping. I've had the occasion to search for whiskey and they were keen to help me with selections. :) They're a little pricey compared to others on 2nd, but it's convenient. read more

Before heading out for a dinner party, I searched "liquor store" on google maps and got 10 wine places. I decided to go with Vintage simply because of its proximity to the train station. With all honesty, having been in UES for the past 9 months, I figured this would be a fancy pants wine store with overpriced wines and very few affordable bottles, likely tucked away in the bottom, back shelf. Pleasant surprise! There were a TON of under $10/$20 wines in many varietals (I'm not just talking Barefoot and Yellowtail). The manager, assistant manager, and staff were all super down-to-earth and awesome. I was going to go with my go-to beaujolais, but decided to partake in a tasting of 3 Spanish wines, including Naia and a rioja. They typically do wine tasting on Thursdays and Fridays. They also had a sale of NY wines going on. I had never tried a NY wine and was skeptical of their quality.. but decided to go with a Long Island unoaked chardonnay. It turned out to be fruity and great with chicken! Overall, an awesome place. Should've started going way earlier! read more

I also hate when I say something like that and they take me to a wall of Prosecco and say "Here's the prosecco section, I hope you find something 'good and cheap'" INSTEAD, Vintage Grape points one out and says with a smile, "This one will do the trick." Nice, effortless...good AND cheap! HOLLAAAAA!!!!!! ---------------- At my last trip, I noticed right away Ramona Singer's PINOT GRIGIO ($12.99) and being a Real Housewives of NYC fan I asked the guy working "Is this shit actually good?". During a particularly hectic weekend visit to NYC, I was running around all day in the heat doing errands when my younger sister called and asked for one favor: can I pick up a selection of drinks for her upcoming party. Ever the amazingly wonderful and beautiful sister that I am, I said of course, hung up the phone, and panicked about how to coordinate that into my schedule. Thank Dionysus I remembered that Vintage Grape was so close to our apartment (and on my way to another location). The store is so well organized by category and region, and with a great selection of labels, that when I dashed inside, within a few moments I had wheeled a somewhat heavily ladden carriage to the register. Then I started sweating about transporting said purchase back home. Luckily for me, the salesman could read my mind and immediately offered their free delivery service, which an hour later brought all those bottles to my doorstep. read more

Was looking for a particular bottle of wine (Whitecliff Tramanette) and had a photo of the bottle on my iPhone. Spoke to a gentle with a beard and he was very helpful. Even though they didn't carry that wine he suggested I check out a wine web site and then buy from the store that carried it (not buy directly from the site). I did that and it listed a store in NYC that carried the wine(cheaper than buying from the site itself). The gentleman at Vintage didn't have to offer this helpful info, but then since they didn't carry what I wanted he wasn't going to lose any business. He cultivated some good will which means I'll be coming back. Previously I went to "Mr. Wright Fine Wines" and "McCabes" on the UES and they just said "no" when asked if they carried this wine. read more

For some reason, all of the stores nearby (Duane Read, 7/11) only sold one brand of wine, for $8. My parents and I initially passed this place by because it looked like all the wine in there would be really expensive. Once we did go in, we found an incredible selection of bottles. My parents wanted something cheap, I wanted something a little more expensive. Worked out great. Staff is on top of things, not a ton of small talk, no BS. Just the way I like it. I have been going to Vintage Grape for at least 4 years now. It is nearby my home. Vintage Grape is laid out quite nicely. Everything is clearly categorized. They have something for everyone. I am quite the wine snob, and I will tell you this: I have gone in there and made big ticket purchases, and gone in there and purchased a ten dollar bottle of wine. It is my go-to place for wine, and I pay attention to when they have sales on cases of wine. I always purchase my cases of wine from them. I have had issues in the past with poor storage and other shops, but not Vintage Grape. Some of their bottles have a little dust on them, but hey- my apartment is like that. I can dust and a few hours later: POOF- dust is back! What is important is that their storage is definitely adequate. Their staff are friendly. I enjoy their tastings quite often. Once they had a scotch tasting. I am a scotch snob. I was not interested in the particular scotch they were promoting, although I was interested in the 21 year scotch of that brand. Vintage Grape was very nice to us and gave us a discount off of the 21 year scotch. The nice Scottish man hosting the tasting was generous with his pours and definitely sold us! (This is coming from somebody whose first scotch was an 18 year Lagavulin, and an Oban) If you read this far, the scotch we purchased was a Glenfiddich. Their fine Bordeaux selection is slightly lacking, but they certainly make up for it in their many other wines. I do wish they would carry Faustino Rioja Reserve, say a 1995 or 97. If they had it, we would buy it. We are Rioja fans. VG's Rioja section is okay- they do have a nice Muga. What sells me at Vintage Grape is their Australian section. There is something for every budget there. You have your more expensive Syrahs, and your more penny pincher ones- and some of the penny pinchers are quite decent. I go with a "Woop Woop" ,or "Red Knot" two South Australia nice buys. South Australia is good for an "everyday" wine. I can go on and on about Vintage Grape wines that I enjoy. There are many. I have enjoyed a nice Poyferre from here several times, and my kudos to Vintage for excellent storage. I have yet to encounter a "bad bottle", and if I did, I am sure they would take it back. (fingers crossed) Definitely try Vintage Grape. Do not be intimidated by wine! There is something for everyone! -from a girl who is starting sommelier "school" next year! read more

I can honestly say this place deserves 5 stars! Fantastic service, amazing prices, great products, and lovely people. I found a bottle of German wine on a trip to New York (I live in San Francisco, used to live in New York), drank it, loved it, and bought one more to bring home. It was so good that I tried to find it in San Francisco, only to discover that the distributor only sells it in New York. With shipping so outrageously expensive from the store I originally bought it from, I tried to track down a better option and stumbled upon Vintage Grape. Any order of $150 or more gets free shipping - problem solved. With a discount for buying a case or more (mix and match is ok) I was surprised to have to add a few bottles upon check out when my total dipped below what I originally thought it was going to be. Awesome! For the same price I got even more of my new favorite. I have subsequently ordered online for several years now, have spoken to the most delightful, friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous staff on many occasions, and have been turned on to several outstanding wines to add to my regular order of the amazing German stuff. I can't wait to actually step foot in the store one of these days to say hi. Anyone who lives anywhere near this place is blessed with a treasure. To my knowledge, there are two main managers / owners at Vintage. One, Derek, in my experiences in dealing with him, has shown an impressive knowledge of his wines and an uncanny talent for matching them in food pairings (something I have been doing for literally decades). Just as importantly to me, he has been pleasant, patient, and polite any time I have dealt with him. Unfortunately, it seems these many attributes have not carried over beyond him. I had the misfortune of finding that out in no uncertain terms recently when (unfortunately) having to deal with his partner. After visiting Vintage one recent Friday evening and having another great experience with Derek in pairing wines for a meal I was preparing the next day, I had also picked up a couple of bottles of liquor - one of which I found when I got home that I already had. The next morning, I returned to the store with the extra bottle to find the other manager present. I simply explained what had happened, and showed him my receipt (I had made over $150 in purchases). The manager responded by saying "Well, would you like to purchase anything in it's place?" I responded to him (again politely) by simply saying that I assumed from his response that the store did not provide refunds. He said they generally didn't. Considering (as mentioned) that I had just spent over $150 on wine the night before (he had the receipt right in front of him), there really wasn't much I needed - but in consideration of what he informed me about the store's policy regarding no refunds, in trying to accommodate, I simply responded that I guess I'd start by picking up a lower end white and red that I could use for cooking. Before I could even continue, this person cut me off, and in a sarcastic, snide and demeaning tone I couldn't possibly convey in writing said, "....Well if you did that it kind of defeats the point of not giving refunds, doesn't it?" I actually didn't even have chance to respond (still pretty taken aback as much by his arrogant, condescending, demeaning tone as I was by his comments themselves) before he got even more agitated and abruptly said, "Fine, I'll make a one- time exception." I reflexively said "Thank you" as he proceeded to step to the register and literally start banging on the keys (I guess he felt he needed to do more to show me how angry and "inconvenienced" he was) and then, as if that wasn't enough, immediately after I had said thank you, in his continued snide and sarcastic tone said "...nothing like starting the day 'in the hole'." A couple of comments before I proceed (if not already obvious). First, I have been cooking, working in restaurants, and pairing/purchasing wine for over 35 years. It is not the most uncommon thing in the world to: over-buy, buy something already in stock, or simply make a wrong choice in a purchase - in fact, it is actually quite common (it's actually quite common for people to return things in general). Secondly, one would note in the above review that at no time from the moment I walked into the store did I even ask for a formal 'refund' - in fact, I really didn't 'ask' for anything let alone make a demand or give any argument whatsoever. I simply walked into the store, politely explained what happened, answered his question regarding purchasing something else....and he "took off" from there. Next, regarding his initial snide response to my effort to try to accommodate his stated policy by starting with a couple of less expensive wines, when cut me off and snapped "it kind of defeats the purpose of not giving a refund...," perhaps he could have given me a second to think of what else I could purchase as I tried to work with him, or even better, this condescending person could have realized that - even if the replacements didn't match the price of the return - there is something called a "store credit" which he could have issued in lieu of a refund (since it was obviously so agonizing for him to give a refund on a bottle...to a customer btw who spent over $150 dollars in his store the night before). Finally regarding him continuing his sarcastic tantrum with his whining that "there's nothing like starting the day in the hole," I think this individual really needs some basic instruction in common sense - because a child would have the logic to realize that, if I am giving you your product back, and you are refunding my money (which again, he CHOSE to do)....then you are getting something back for what you are giving out. That's why it is called a "REFUND." So you are not losing anything or "...starting the day in the hole." Not a hard concept. As most of us would agree, there is enough stress, lack of consideration, and disrespect to deal with on a day to day basis. In my opinion, none of us should have to deal with it from any establishment, that we have given our business to. I will never return to this store again and will advise my friends of same read more

Waited around for 15 mins. Nobody still.. decided to just stick with the bottle I had in my hand. Went to cash register. Asked cashier if she could wrap it for gift. She blew up in my face that she had no time since there were 2 people in line behind me. Really?! It takes 5 seconds to wrap the bottle and tie the string. Absolutely disgusted at the utter lack of customer service I witnessed first-hand at this store. I've lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years now + luckily have Mister Wright literally right across the street from my apartment, however this past Sunday at around 7:30pm, I decided to pop in here to grab a bottle of red on my walk home. Mistake #1. Anyone could have seen that I was unfamiliar with the store's layout and was clearly looking for something in particular (a South African Pinotage), however, no one asked if they could help me, no one even greeted me. Nothing. I wandered around until I found the 'Africa' section, which, so conveniently had a few storage boxes directly in front of it. Ok, yes, quite annoying + incredibly unwelcoming for a business to be this unorganized, but it was a tiny obstacle in the moment. As I attempted to weed through my options, I only saw $30+ bottles on the top shelf display, so I crouched down to the lower levels to find what I needed, spotting Southern Right's notorious label with a whale, a bottle which I will add was INSANELY overpriced here. Immediately, a man (one who I refuse to refer to as a gentleman) came over to nastily bark at me with a "Hey Miss - don't take a bottle from down there. That's our overstock, Take one from the top." Startled at the tone he used, not to mention the fact that in any other retail store, an employee would actually offer to HELP in that moment instead of yell at a customer, I immediately snapped back, alerting him that what I wanted (the bottle that was in my hand) was not on the top display shelf, so I had no choice but to look elsewhere, adding in that it's not as though any of the 4 employees standing around on their phones even offered to assist me. With that, I put the bottle down, told the cashier that the owner should be ashamed at running a business is such a horrible manner, and walked out. I've lost count of how many individuals I've rehashed this incident to in the past 2 days. Moral of the story: This place doesn't deserve my business or yours. read more
