She didn't try to sell me the most expensive wig; but gave me the pros and cons of the different types of wigs and this helped me to choose a less expensive wig that looks like my own hair and falls into style without any fuss. I have purchased 2 wigs from VIP Wigs & have been extremely happy with both of them. Both of them were high quality synthetic wigs that continue to look months later just as beautiful as the day I bought them. I felt the need to review this store not only to rave about her wigs (hair pieces, toppers, etc.) but also because I'm not sure if people are hesitant about considering this place due to where it happens to be located. The building it is in is not particularly impressive & is actually a little difficult to find because there are not a lot of active businesses surrounding it either, though it is in the middle of town in a very nice area. This store has been in this same spot for over 45 years! Mary is the owner who is the only person running the store. She is wonderful! Your first impression may be that she is not interested in really doing business &/or not very friendly in general. This is so far from the truth however! Mary is very knowledgeable & friendly as well. She has a calm & professional manner making you feel immediately comfortable which is unlike other places that I have been to recently. No pressure is put on the customer to buy anything & questions are easy to ask which is so nice for those of us who basically know nothing about wigs. I am a cancer survivor & so is Mary. It was an added pleasure to know that she could relate to the many mixed feelings that I had about having to buy a wig due to the damage my hair incurred from the chemoradiation I went through for my GI Cancer. My hair has been getting thinner over the last few years and I was so unhappy with the way I looked. My friend and I both experiencIng the same issues finally decided to tackle the problem, which is how we ended up at VIP Wigs. Mary, the store's owner suggested we try hair toppers and helped us put some on. She was very patient and educated us on the process. Not only did we love the way the toppers looked, but we were also amazed at how well the colors matched and blended with our own hair color. The quality and perfect color made the hair pieces look real. It was near impossible to tell the added hair was not our own. She is such a sweet lady and helped us find several styles to choose from, and fortunately the first one we tried was the one we ended up buying. They offer nylon, fiber and real hair wigs. Mary shared her testimony with us and she's an incredibly amazing and strong woman! Her own story gave us some encouragement and we left the shop feeling positive and uplifted. I lost about half my hair due to Covid. I tried another wig salon in Walnut Creek and they didn't have anything that was appropriate or looked natural. Mary was very helpful, she found the perfect wig-color, texture and style. It didn't have to be ordered and I walked out wearing it, a very happy customer. A week later I wanted it thinned a bit and went back in. Without a charge, Mary removed some of the wefts to give it a more natural appearance. She was compassionate, sensitive to the circumstances, was knowledgeable about the cancer treatment process, and very helpful in the wig selection. I was very nervous about going wig shopping. I was afraid that I might have to explain that my skin condition isn't contagious, I was afraid that someone might treat me like a leper, I was afraid of judgment, I was AFRAID. Worse, I was not even sure I wanted a wig, but I'd never know until I tried one on. So I went with two supportive friends, and hoped for the best. I didn't need to be afraid. Mary was gentle, and welcoming, and knowledgeable, not about just wigs, but about the emotional side of being a woman who's had to cut all her hair down to a buzz cut. She answered all my questions (I had a lot of questions after reading online about wigs) and then let me try on all that I wanted. The last thing was that I was afraid of being pressured into buying something after "taking up time." Instead, when I said I wanted to go home and talk with my wife about it, that was fine. It is a big purchase, after all. It's a tiny shop, but there was a decent selection - I found one I liked, and I went home to think about it. I'll be seeing Mary again. You never really appreciate how much you see your reflection while out and about until your head looks bare! I thought I could deal with having no hair, but no... My Kaiser doctor recommended this shop and I am so glad I found Mary! It was awesome how the VERY first wig Mary picked out for me was the perfect one! It looked just how I used to look before ovarian cancer (thank goodness I am all done and healthy). I agree with others that she is direct - which I think is important, but she is very kind, caring and helpful! So happy with my hair! Yesterday was my grandma's 89th birthday, and when I came to visit her in Concord, I asked her if there was anything she wanted to or anyplace she wanted to go. She said she'd been thinking about visiting a wig shop since her hair is now very thin, but the only place she knew about was by appointment only. I looked up local wig shops, and VIP Wigs popped up, so I called and asked if they were open for walk ins, and the owner Mary said to come on by. My grandma's never done anything like this, and her hearing and vision (especially) is impaired, but Mary was very patient and walked us through the process. She spoke nice and loud, and was very hands on at color matching and describing the step by step process of the options she had. Despite my grandma's age, the hair she has is gray and brown. Mary brought two options out that were synthetic and heat tolerant. It costs $5 for a hair stocking to try on wigs, but Grandma tried on 2 without additional cost, and the price of the wigs were outlined very clearly before she ever tried one on. The first was a lot longer than my grandma's ever had, and she wasn't in love with it. The second one was a lot shorter, and very full. My grandma has never had very thick hair, but she liked the style and color a lot, so Mary thinned out the bangs to make it more suitable to Grandma's style. She said that shampooing the wig might help with some of the floof if it was still too full for Grandma's liking, but she also offered to thin it out free of charge if Grandma decided she wanted to reduce the volume. Grandma opted to wait until she got used to her new look, and Mary said it's a standing offer. We got all the required accessories for starting out, and Mary also cut my grandma's natural hair and eyebrows so that it would work with the wig. There was no second guessing after that! I was very impressed by the level of detail and care that VIP Wigs paid to my Grandma. Mary was very accommodating and informative, and my grandma walked out of the store feeling better about her appearance than she has in a long time. Mary is so awesome! I don't understand why there are reviews on here talking about how impersonal she is. She's direct, but she's also very warm and loves to chat. She's a cancer survivor and knows her business. She's a strong, educated, well spoken woman and I enjoy my visits with her. I found Mary's shop after searching around for a good place to go. I walked in and was so nervous. There was an older woman being fitted for a short wig, her daughter had brought her in for a new piece for her birthday. After seeing Mary interact with them for such a happy occasion, my nervousness was eased. I've bought two wigs from Mary (on two separate occasions) and I love both of them. They are great quality for her synthetic wigs and are reasonably priced. When I wear them, they a are virtually undetectable and do not look "wiggy". I have received many compliments. I am 34 and have suffered medical hairloss since my early 20s. I have always struggled with my hairloss and this year decided to start wearing hair. Seeing all the 5 ratings was impressive and knowing zero about wigs, I set up an appointment to find out more information. I set up an appointment to ask questions and the owner was very sweet and compassionate. She made me feel really good about my complete hair loss. I really didn't realize that the "information" I was getting in was for my emotional condition......and prices of wigs. Since I was feeling so good, I set up another appointment to try on and purchase a wig. That experience was another story. The sweetness was still there but not professional information I should have received for such a financial investment. I should have asked more technical questions. If I had half an intelligent, unemotional brain working, I would have walked out. Now I realize: #1. Wigs have been tried on by other people & the one you're paying an incredible amount of money for is not tagged or boxed. There is no indication of where the wig came from. (A health issue?) #2. It was assumed that my head was the average size & I knew no differently until I went to a second, very professional shop to have the wig trimmed & found out my head size was larger than average.......which I was sold. (since no tags or indication on the wig itself, I had no way of knowing and there's no discussion about head size...or measuring) #3. There was no discussion of the construction or features I knew nothing about. The "information" included why the cheaper $189.00 wigs are "plastic" and will melt. #4. I wanted a more fuller look since I have really thin hair and I lost a lot with the tape in extensions. I'm quite embarrassed to write this review but am such a happy customer that I'm willing to get over my embarrassment so that others will visit this shop. Speaking of embarrassing, I love that this shop is conveniently located in Downtown Walnut Creek but is discreetly tucked away at the end of a small shopping alley so there's no embarrassment to be felt as walking into the shop. Other Yelpers describe the owner Mary as rude, rough or to the point but I thought quite the opposite. I walked in without an appointment and she was very friendly, pleasant and easy to talk to AND most importantly was reassuring about my medical conditions and hair needs. She made recommendations based on my medical needs, hair texture and length and showed me how to style my hair with the product.
