Several years ago, I wrote a Yelp review for Virgie's and now it's gone. I wonder why, Yelp? I returned for lunch a few days ago and was the only diner inside at around noon. My order at the counter was for the 1 meat plate choosing sliced brisket, beans and potato salad. With a soft drink and tax my cost was $20 and the food was ready in less than 5 minutes. The brisket was good and tender and I liked the beans and mustard based potato salad too. They supplied two small containers of bbq sauce and a couple of slices of white bread. They charge extra if you want another small container of sauce. Other places it's free. I gave this meal a strong 3 score and would consider returning. Virgie's is in a stand-alone building with its own small parking lot. Check their business hours as they don't stay open late. read more

The barbecue is to die for and so are the potato salad. They just have wonderful food. It is very worth it five stars from me.

I ordered a loaded baked potatoe and it was awful. It was served in a plastic to go container and the potato looked like microwaved mashed potatoes with toppings. My husband ordered a BBQ plate and his was microwaved as well. The meat was old and tasted bad. After seeing several dead roaches on the floor, we threw out our food and left. The food is great the brisket taste really good. It definitely taste way better than pappas bbq. The beans, baked potato, and Sausage links are really good as well. The only thing I wasn't a big fan of was the macaroni it was alright. The potato salad is good. It's a little pricey when you buy just the plate for one person because they only give 2 1/2 slices of brisket. That's the only con. At least serve 4 slices well served and up charge a bit more. Local to my office and passed by enough times the pig in a bib artwork enticed me in. Tried the ribs which they seemed to be most proud, and they were good. Not in league with the best, but I enjoyed them. Had a jerky-like texture which reminded me of one of those big smoked turkey legs from the Renaissance festival. Ample portions for the 1 meat plate. First of all, I read everyone's reviews over and over prior to eating here and again prior to writing this review. Second of all, I have my love with Virgie's BBQ from the beginning. I've been here every other week and it's becoming my routine on paydays. I've tried everything on the menu. Most of dishes are twice my usual portion, which makes them quite economical. The meats are uniquely seasoned and fresh. Sliced beef is my favorite. If I feel like sharing, I order 2 meats dinner plate with sausage. Leftover would be my perfect midnight snack. I could make them into a sandwich or add them as toppings on my ramen. Otherwise, my quick grab is a sandwich, which satisfies my craving for meat on the go. The sides are also unique: Coleslaw had a perfect texture. I added a pinch of salt and hot sauce to season to my liking. Green beans were already seasoned. Just make sure to stir well, the tasty seasoning settled to the bottom. Potato salad was really homemade as I would like it at home. Baked beans, not sure (I normally don't eat beans with meats.) Besides the BBQ joints' basics, I also tried the baked potatoes with chopped chicken. Bravo to the chef! This creative variety is beyond believe. They are served in 2 sizes: smaller portion is with chopped beef, otherwise, normal portion comes with meat toppings on a layer of halved baked potato. (see my photo) According to my Yelper friends, Killen's and CorkScrew are better than Virgie's. Uh... I don't travel outside of my comfort zones and wait in line for hours. I have to say that I'm very lucky to work near Virgie's to have delicious BBQ anytime. After seeing this place being featured as one of the two best BBQ places in Houston by Texas Monthly for 2013, as a good (nay, GREAT) Yelpologist, of course I had to go and try this place out, right? They're closed on Sundays and Mondays, and they're only open until 2 PM on Tuesdays, and their hours become more regular from Wednesday - Saturday when they close at 6:30 PM (through Friday) and 5:30 (Saturday). Pretty much, if you're thinking about trying this place out, check their hours first!! Don't be an idiot like me who drove all the way here on a Monday just to find out that the place wasn't even open. Moving on with the review. this place is tiny. The parking lot is tiny. The inside is tiny. I came here around 2;30 pm so it was way past lunch hours but I can imagine people having to wait a little bit during lunch rush. I got myself the two-meat platter because I wanted to try the brisket and the sausage. I'd have to say, they did not disappoint. The brisket was moist and super tender. Rich of flavors. The sausage wasn't as good as the brisket in comparison, but it was still really good. You get to choose two sides with my platter. I opted for potato salad and some cole slaw. The potato salad was also good. The cole slaw, however, was nothing special. My platter also came with two slices of bread. Now the downside of this bbq joint is, they only gave me one little container cup of BBQ sauce. ONE!!! If you want extra, it'll cost you $0.25 per container. The thing is, I'm the kind of guy who loooooooves to just pour bbq sauce all over my meat. And I also love to dip my bread in the bbq sauce before eating them. That one little container?? It wasn't nearly enough. I had to take away one star just for this. Seriously. I mean, why wouldn't you just provide your sauce just like most other bbq joints where you can just get unlimited amount of sauce? Or, if you get a two-meat platter, at least give me two containers, instead of just the one? Would I be back? Yes, definitely. Would I be happy when I pay that extra $1 for four extra containers of bbq sauce? Probably not. I hope when I try Gatlin's (the other bbq joint in Houston voted into the top 50), this will not be the case. read more

Day 2 of Houston food trip. First stop, Virgie's out on the west side of the city. Driving out here took a bit and when I started winding my way through back streets in a residential/industrial area I thought for sure google was leading me to the wrong place. However, I abruptly came upon Virgie's which consisted of a small wooden shack in a grassy lot. Both the exterior and interior really made me feel like I was in a southern bbq joint as the bustling shop was filled with texas flags, animal skulls, bible quotes and nancy grace blaring on the tv. The cashier was very friendly and everyone there certainly looked like they were enjoying their meals. I ordered a pound of brisket and a small order of pork ribs. This turned out to be a good decision because the brisket was amazing and the ribs were disappointing. I'd give the ribs a 2/5 because they were dry and just not exciting in any way. The brisket though, was wonderful. More than anything you notice the smoky flavor coming out in these thin slices that literally fall apart when you touch them. Side note, when I got a drink at Virgie's, I got to the soda fountain and realized they had no diet sodas at all. This seemed fitting given the atmosphere and customers, who were almost all drinking the sweet tea instead. Overall, they certainly know how to do brisket well in this town. So far both places I've gone have had some of the best brisket I've ever had, albeit in very different styles. While Rudy's were thick cuts of ultra moist and fatty beef, Virgie's was thin and almost delicate with the taste of smoke filling your mouth. Unfortunately, neither of them compare to Corkscrew's brisket. "I'm a fan," but this is not as good as it gets. read more

Nice friendly little family owned spot off a dirt road. Unless your a local in the know! Fatty brisket at Virgies did the damn thing for me! It don't got the hype like Gatlin's. I did get the 3 meat plate. BUT personally I'd stick with the 5 star brisket and the sausage. Make sure you specify fatty, but since we ate there there was no concern about having to double check that we'd get hosed with some lean brisket! According to another customer who sat next to us....definitely recommended you even triple check your order. Since they slice in the back where you can't see in plain view what you ordered. So consistency in having it your way perhaps can be questionable at times. The St. Loo style ribs looked good with that bark and smelled great but what I was served were oversmoked but still good. But those "savory" sides that I chose did nada for me. The potato salad was sweet! Sucked! And go easy on that sauce. Its waaay too sweet for my liking as well. I suspect it's the store bought sauce. OMG never been so disappointed, 2 meat plate ribs 2/links with potato salad & baked beans $15.00 togo, everything tastes good just like I like my BBQ but here's where it got sad! The ribs had no meat on them, none, none, none, none, none.... Just a big azz bone, each side of both ribs was the Width of a New Port Cigarette "Not length Width!!!!! If you know your ribs are small then give us extra ribs to make up for the lack of meat and explain why this is being given. Will I come back NO.... my first impression was ruined! read more

Only came with 2 slices of brisket which was disappointing. Decent place, but I know of better spots that offer better quality and quantity(at this price point). First off, this is a cute, cozy place tucked on Gessner Rd. North of Clay Rd. We ordered two rib plates with sides green beans, potato salad, coleslaw and macaroni & cheese. It smells like great barbecue from the parking lot. They did not have any baby back ribs so we had the beef ribs. I so wanted to enjoy these ribs, but they were just ok, in spite of an excellent sauce. They were not overly tender and certainly not fall-off-the-bone. Perhaps the baby backs would have been better. Sides seem to be a big challenge. For instance, I have particular potato salad standards that align with my own recipe. It should not have the texture of mashed potatoes! I'd been looking for this place for quite some time, read-only good things about it. I found it accidentally so I was too glad to stop in to try their bbq. While there is a sign stating meat by the pound, the only problem you can only purchase full pounds no halves, thirds, etc. All sausages are already sliced and cannot be purchased by whole lengths which means they are dried out because they seem to be cut up before opening for business & left sitting til needed. I observed a woman in the back chopping up a big pan of chicken before there was an order for it. I made a decision to buy two meat plate choosing brisket and pork ribs. At $15.47 what I received was paltry, to say the least. I was so shocked at how skimpy the box was when I looked. It was the thinnest two slices of brisket with three inches of fat on one piece that I have ever received. Can't figure out if the meat were thicker would it have been less tuff. There are several grades of brisket, theirs not the one at the top or middle of the grade. My second meat two St. Louie cut pork ribs that taste alright, but nothing special. I asked for sauce on the side. I have never ever seen any bbq place, joint, or otherwise, give two such tiny containers of sauce that had the oddest smell that permeated our car. The beans and green beans were completely devoid of any spice or season. The bbq tastes better than it looks, but not enough to justify the price or my desire to ever return. My husband's brisket sandwich was no better. The bun that was used is the cheapest, making the taste very off-putting and causing the sandwich to be very disappointing. I am an extremely harsh critic and let me tell you... this BBQ place is real deal!!! Virgie, the owner, is extremely nice and involved in every aspect of his restaurant. When you taste his food, you can tell that he is passionate and persistent about his BBQ. Some might say his food is a little pricey, but that is only because he serves the highest quality of meats and sauce. I have been in Houston for over 10 years now and ate at numerous BBQ establishments... and no one is even close to being in the same league as this guy... HE IS THE REAL DEAL!!!!! Dropped in today for another round of Que and to let the owner know of little problem encountered during my last visit. It's a shame that some employees just don't care..... He was receptive and appreciative of the info, and tried to make it right. A good example of a concerned business owner. The 1/2 lb of brisket and 1/4 lb of sausage were spot on, with a side of potato salad and sweet tea to round out the meal. They now have self-serve fountain drinks and sweet tea, a nice addition since the re-opening. read more

Back during the summer of 2009, I decided I would make it my goal to visit all Texas Monthly 2008 Top 50 BBQ places in one years' time. I figure it is only fair to write reviews for them. Made it here just a few minutes before the official opening time, but they went and unlocked the doors and let me in anyhow. Small little place that tries to pack in my tables than they should, and the walls covered in religious memorabilia and old articles about the place, it fit in well for that area of Houston. Strangely, they serve the food in a styrofoam to-go container, despite the fact that I assured them I was eating here. I noticed after other people showed up everyone gets served that way. Anyway, the food.... Sausage was oh so sadly, commercial, and somewhat bland commercial at that. At least they cooked it properly, and it had a good smoke flavor on it, but nothing special. Rib on the other hand was well cared for. It was a pork spare rib, and had plenty of flavor and a good brown crust. Odd, it actually smelled better than it tasted, but it still tasted good. Brisket was the highlight (as it should be). I was very surprised, but this place did a great brisket. Well rendered and marbled fat with a good dark bark that had terrific flavor. Very moist, and the prettiest smoke ring that had strong smoke and pepper flavors. Great brisket! I do wish they provided a bit more however. Side of beans where a boring canned variety. This potato salad had something go for it however. It was more of mashed potatoes that had onions and mustard in them than what you typically associate with potato salad. Sauce was a big disappointment. The smell was good, and it looked like a great sauce. As soon as I tasted it however it became clear they add straight liquid smoke to this. If you have ever tasted liquid smoke, that is what this sauce tasted like with some more vinegar, pepper, and ketchup added, so disappointing. Definitely worth going to for the brisket, and grab some ribs and potato salad while you are there. The real reason you know it is good. While I was eating there about 25 bikers pulled up to eat. Other than being very scared that I would be stabbed, I at least knew it must be good for them coming all the way from Beaumont. read more

Best beef brisket I've ever had the pleasure to know. Even the dry parts were moist. Smokey but not too. Rich caramelized bark. I got the beef and ribs and they were almost equal, but in Texas, brisket is king and that's my sense about Virgie's. Really hospitable too. Asked me if it was my first time visiting and then asked me, "How is it Mr. J?" Which is a great colloquialism very common in Louisiana I think. Anyway, on to the BBQ cuisine - beyond words really. It definitely needed none of the BBQ sauce. That would have only detracted from the goodness of the delectables before me. On my way out the chef (that's right - chef) told me thank you. On the contrary - thank you sir! PS. When it comes to places that really truly specialize in something as precious as this type of cooking, it always amazes me (actually it doesn't amaze me) when critics (sic) review things like the coleslaw, potato salad and BBQ sauce or, the hours of operation. That's like going to the Louvre and downgrading it because the cafe serves crap. These people (at Vergie's) are artists, they perform when they want to and we're lucky they do. read more

YUM! I can never seem to catch this place when it's open, but so glad we popped in on a Saturday afternoon. The guy who runs this restaurant is incredibly nice. We took a really long time to decide on what to order (it all sounded good) but he was really patient with us. Eventually we went with the brisket sandwich and the smoked chicken sandwich. We also talked him in to letting us try a rib and a small sample piece of the smoked sausage and he obliged. Didn't get any sides, just wanted to try the BBQ this time. My favorite was the brisket: it was lean but so tender, and you could see and taste the smoke. Hubby's was the rib: fall off the bone, juicy, tender and a huge smoke ring! I also liked the sausage: smokey, not too much salt, tons of flavor. My least favorite was the smoked chicken, not because it was bad, but because everything else was such a star. The chicken was juicy and tender, but unless you had told me so I wouldn't have known it was smoked honestly. The sandwiches come on a plain, soft 5oz bun which I thought would be boring but in the end it lets the meat stand out more so probably the best choice. He also puts a bit of BBQ sauce, some thinly sliced onion, as well as pickle unless you don't want that stuff. Very good and satisfying sandwich. He does catering so now I'm looking for an excuse to have a party lol. He also mentioned that they will probably start doing daily specials soon for their lunch crowd so be on the look out for that. Very friendly local BBQ which is actually very close to my hotel. I arrive at 4:30 on a Saturday, 30 minutes before closing, so my review may be slanted a bit because the team was clearly getting ready to close. I ordered a pound of brisket and a half chicken to-go. The chicken was taken out of the refrigerator and microwaved up to temperature, I'm not sure about the brisket. Both meats were very flavorful, however I felt the chicken was just a little too smoky for my liking, and the brisket wasn't as tender as I would have liked. All in all, I would definitely try this again for lunch when everything is fresh and ready to go. read more

I went because we randomly heard about it on a sports talk show and just so happen to be 5 minutes from.the location and its my grandmother's namesake. The meat to potato portion was off. We walked in in Saturday morning at 11:30am and there was only one other person seated so it was practically empty. We both got the 1 meat combo and total was $23 so not cheap. Wow! Decided to order take-out bbq (during Coronavirus) based on Texas Monthly's Ultimate Guide to BBQ and we were NOT disappointed. This hidden gem on Gessner is worth the trek. It is an unassuming down-to-earth place. We were warmly greeted by the owner who clearly loves what he does. He went over the menu options with us after we told him that we were first-time customers. Everything sounded delicious so we ordered quite a bit of food. We settled on 1/2 a bbq chicken, 1/2 a rack of ribs, 1 lb of sausage, 2 lbs of brisket, and a large container of potato salad. My mouth is watering just writing this! The food was a smorgasbord of scrumptious meats and cool creamy potato salad. The order included a ton of bread, onions, and pickles for our meal. It seemed like a lot of food but we ate most of it--it was too good to stop!
