    Tofu Banh Mi
    Chris F.

Really enjoyed coming here, but I do think I'm missing out on the core experience being a vegetarian. I did thoroughly enjoy the tofu banh mi I ordered with egg and the fries were ordered were unexpectedly really solid. The only thing keeping this place from being a 5 for me is that while all the ingredients were fresh and the taste was great it fell slightly short of exceptional for me. Could definitely be convinced to bump the score to a 5 with future visits though!

I decided to give this restaurant another chance after my previous experience and I am happy to say that it is now a solid 5/5. The ambiance is nice and is plenty of seating. The waitress was super friendly and seemed very knowledgeable about the menu. The waitress brought extra special chili oil to the table which I very much appreciated. The chicken wings with the house special sauce were very crispy and seasoned well, and the fries were very piping hot but still lacking salt. The pandan Vietnamese coffee was exceptional and the flavor of the coffee with the pandan was a wonderful combination. The pho broth was also quite spectacular with richness from the bones and perfectly seasoned with pho spices. The Banh mi pork was delicious and nicely grilled and the bread was crispy and flavorful. My diagnosis: come here for full bodied pho, strong Vietnamese coffee, excellent Banh mi and crispy chicken wings!

This place is a hidden gem located on Kempwood near Blalock. I've been here a few times, but the most recent time was an excellent experience all around. The staff members were nice, thorough when taking my order, and cashier was friendly. And very importantly - the food was superb! The large pho with 4 meats - a very large portion (I would argue it's close to XL) was delicious - one of the best in Houston! Pho reel!!! Broth had a deep, rich flavor, not too sweet, and the meat cuts were good quality. It is a pricey bowl of pho though $14). I grew up with $6 pho so I know inflation is real (and I'm old). The wings with house sauce came out blazing hot (don't burn the roof of your mouth!) and the sauce is a sweet, fish saucy flavor. If you like fish sauce, you'll love the wings. They were a bit on the small side but that's ok. Fries were also piping hot and could have used a touch of salt and pepper. The Vietnamese coffee - so, so good. If you add a $1, you can add the pandan cream which I think elevates the coffee quite a bit. It's a good portion and has such a strong coffee flavor. You gotta try it! Lastly the grilled pork banh mi was a hit as well. A standard portion and not over priced. We went on a weekday for an early lunch, around 11:30 am, and there was plenty of parking at that time (there is also ample parking behind the restaurant) and the place was relatively empty. As we were about to leave after our amazing meal, it started to fill up. The inside is quite spacious so I would be surprised if there's ever a capacity issue inside or a long wait for a table. My fellow Yelpers - try this place out! You won't regret it! I hope their business thrives for many years to come!

This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant that I've tried so far out of the three that I have visited in the area. They keep the whole dining area and kitchen super clean. The staff are super nice and happy. The bond me vegetables are crunchy and taste. Fresh, meat is superb. Some of the other restaurants that I've visited in the area did not include all the delicious ingredients that I would expect in a pho and sandwich pho reel made a pho that was hearty and delicious. Here's what I got: - Moist Brisket + Rare Brisket Pho (Large, $13.50): you can choose up to four meats, I only chose two. It was delicious. - Pork Banh Mi ($6.50): Smoky flavor in the pork was awesome. And they didn't douse the meat and veggies in hoisin sauce, and the veggies were crisp. The baguette was tasty too... Next time, I would get the Vietnamese Coffee. They use a chicory-blend coffee -- not for everybody (some people don't like the added bitterness) but I love it. Give this place a shot!!!

Sandwich Pho Real was very welcoming from the moment I walked in, and the food was delicious. My only downside was the price, it was a bit on the pricey side. That said, the to go packaging was great and well done, which I appreciated. The chicken and beef pho are definitely worth trying and were full of flavor. Overall a solid spot if you do not mind paying a little extra for quality food.

This place was absolutely the best. I was craving a shredded chicken banh mi and set out on a quest to find one. I found this place, and while they didn't have shredded chicken, the grilled chicken breast was okay with me. IT WAS DELICIOUS! I regret not getting the pho ga, I'll definitely have to get that next time. The people that worked there were so nice and warm. The lady that took my order kept calling me by first name. Even when she brought the food out, she gave me the food and called my name. The restaurant was vibey. They had cute aesthetics and it was in a nice sized building. The decor was made to feel like you were in a jungle, it was great! I'll definitely be back!!!!!!

Sandwich pho real is such a hidden GEM. Their pho is absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. We also tried the egg rolls - DELICIOUS. Service was great and friendly. Ample seating inside. We absolutely loved it and will be back.

Seeking my weekly banh mi, I found this spot through Yelp. Is it fancy? Moreso casual. Is it good? Yes! But even if it wasn't, (which it is), I'd return for the service any day! Tastefully renovated with wood panels, warm bright lighting fixtures, and a bit of greenery, it's not the fanciest, but it is homey and warm. The Vietnamese coffee was strong and they don't skip on the tender meat in their banh mis. I left full! Co-owner Tina visiting each guest, ensuring everyone felt at home was the cherry on top of a refreshing experience. I'm certainly adding this spot to my rotation!

Nut allergy warning: Some of the dry dishes have nuts, as well as the spring roll sauce. Parking: Pretty difficult at first glance. Some spots up front, some on the side. But there is a gravel lot in the back that has plenty of space. Look on the shelf, see the Cafe du Monde coffee box. Nuoc mam on every table. Hell yeah, I'm home. Time-to-Food: ~7 minutes Plenty of space inside and we self-seated for a party of 3 with no issues on a Friday afternoon. I ordered the "dirty matcha latte", which was a matcha latte with coffee milk infused. I asked to customize the sweetness and go with as light as they could, but I have no idea if they did anything different. It was a little sweet for me, but I still really enjoyed it (normally I really don't like sweet drinks). (5/5) I sampled my table's salted lemonade and it was also delicious and not too sweet either (5/5). They brought out standard accompaniments for pho and bun bo hue separately, which we appreciated (bun bo hue got cabbage for example; and I think the pho came with culantro which is pretty rare!). The pho was definitely one of the best I've had in the area (5/5). I could've appreciated a little more protein, but I thought the portions were extremely reasonable for the price. The broth was rich and flavorful. Would compete with any of the shops on Bellaire easily. The bun bo hue was a bit weaker. While it came with sate on the side to customize spice levels, it felt a little watery and there wasn't the complexity of flavor that I'm used to with a long infusion of lemongrass and spice. I think it's a very accessible bun bo hue for people that are new to the dish, so I appreciate their balance here. The noodles were perfectly cooked. (4/5) The owner, Tina, came by and said hello - delighted to see her being active and involved! Overall, totally deserves a visit and I'm delighted to see a great Vietnamese spot in this area.

My experience at this location was very good. The service was good, the food was great & the ambiance felt very laid back. The restaurant is also spacious as well. I decided to order a few things to try & overall I was satisfied. For starters I got their wings (house sauce), egg-rolls and I ordered the pho as my entree. My friend had their chicken banh mi. * egg-rolls- very mediocre in my opinion. Didn't really taste fresh. Like store bought frozen egg rolls then refried. The fish sauce was delicious though. 2.5/5 * house wings- delicious across the board. I can tell that they seasoned the heck of out their wings, like no flavors were left behind. The batter was crispy and had a sweetness to it, like fish sauce. I can't stand when restaurants rely on just batter for flavor & this location showed how to make some good chicken wings. Fries were simple but came out piping hot. 5/5 * Pho with (moist brisket, meatball and rare ribeye steak)- the broth had a lot of depth to it, savory and good umami flavor. Didn't need any Sriracha or hoisin sauce for flavor. All the meats were tendered. 4.5/5 * chicken banh mi- nicely grilled, but seasoned wise it needed more flavor. The chicken was tendered and the bread was toasted nicely. 3.5/5 * Lemonade- I can tell that they made it fresh in house. It was sweet & a little sour. Such a refreshing drink. 4.5/5 While I appreciate the food coming out in a timely manner. I didn't like the fact that I received my entree first. Yes, I know that Pho is easily prepared because the broth is already simmered in the pot for hours. But you could've brought out the appetizers first and then the Pho. Pretty much the appetizers came out 30 seconds after the entree which I was a bit overwhelmed. I also had to ask twice for a to go box. But it's alright I was still happy with my experience. Will I come back? Honestly I wish this location was in Chinatown since I live there, this would've easily been my go to spot. But I'll still dine in every now and then since it's out of my way. Overall good job Sandwich pho reel.

best tofu banh mi i've had! they sauce it up, which i've never experienced before so it had a really good flavor unique to any tofu banh mi i've ever had. the service was good, the interior is cute. very large space and the cashier was very welcoming as well. i tried the salted foam vietnamese coffee, delicious. you hardly ever see vietnamese coffee served with foam, and it was very thick and creamy that it complimented the strong coffee. curious to try their vermicelli bowls next!

I think I may have found a new favorite Pho restaurant in Spring Branch. Broth is everything for Pho and this place does it right. It's a clear, clean broth with a rich flavor. There's a good amount of fat that you can see on top which makes for an excellent mouth feel and taste when you sip on the broth. Generous amount of beef... my favorite cut was probably the moist brisket. I like that we can choose up to 4 cuts of beef with a large bowl. The noodles are cooked well... not too hard or mushy. Their spicy chili oil that they gave me made for an amazing dipping sauce! I also ordered a grilled pork banh mi for take-out and I thought that was delicious as well. The pork was flavorful, plenty of vegetables, and the bread was good quality. My only critique is that I'd like to see reusable cups for water instead of giving out water bottles for sustainability purposes!

cheesesteak bahn mi, brisket and rib eye pho everything was 10/10. not pictured were my fried spring rolls. my sister ate those
    Nessa J.

the cheesesteak bahn mi is a certified sammich in my book. the pho was delicious as well but the bahn mi is the star of this movie. i see why this is a foodie hidden gem of houston. i will definitely be back for everything i ordered. service was great snd food didnt take long at all. the place attracted every all types of people who enjoy food.

I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. When I arrived there was nobody dining in the restaurant, that was a bit worrying, but I figured it was a bit early for the dinner crowd and late for the lunch crowd. Food & Drink - 4.5* First up was the noodles, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't say the hype I'd heard about from some others was there. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. He paused to greet me and advised that I could sit anywhere. He provided water and adequate time to determine what I wanted to order. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. I provided pics of the menu for someone to make their own assessment but in general I thought many of the dishes were pricier than they probably should be. I know inflation is certainly killing many businesses and consumers but even these felt a bit off. Overall - 4.5* This is definitely going to be one of my go tos for crawfish when in the area. The flavor is fantastic, the pricing is good, the size of them were solid. There are a couple of other dishes I may try on the next visit. I don't think I've ever consumed so much shrimp paste in my life, so if you don't like that flavor you probably wanna go elsewhere, but other than that everything was just really comforting and nice to eat. My least favorite of what we got was the Banh Bot Chien, and even that was still really good and had a nice crunch. Everything else we ordered was all really authentic and very forward with flavor. The restaurant was incredibly busy on the Saturday we went, with the bustling lunch crowd of both large families and old couples filling up the entire restaurant, so try to go at an off-hour where most people aren't eating. It was just an incredible experience that I 100% recommend to anyone wanting authentic Vietnamese food.

I've been going here for several years, both in person and for take-outs, and they have never failed to impress me. I like to go here for late lunch or early dinner when the restaurant isn't as busy. The restaurant is in the same shopping center as the Chase Bank and Thanh Da Quan. Even though it's located on the far side of Chinatown near My Hoa Market, the drive is definitely worth it. The restaurant is small and well decorated, and the workers are nice. The dishes are a bit pricey compared to other Vietnamese restaurants for the portion size, but the taste and quality definitely make it worth it. Even my parents, who are super picky when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants, love the food at Com Nieu Houston. Like the name, most of the dishes here are in clay pots. Everything is always super flavorful and perfectly cooked. My absolute favorites are the Thit Ba Chi Kho To (caramelized pork belly), the Suon Non Rim To (braised spare ribs) and the Canh Chua Tom (Vietnamese sweet and sour soup with shrimps). I also really love their Com Chien Ca Man (salted fish & chicken fried rice), which I think is one of the best in town, as well as their Ga Kho Xa Ot (braised lemongrass chicken). The Ca Bong Lau Kho To (caramelized catfish) is my parents' favorite. Photos are from my most recent visit.

I never had central vietnamese food before and never heard of most of these dishes. We saw that everyone was getting the three appetizer platter, bun bo hue, and had to try it. I also got the chicken vermicelli just as a classic. But every single item in the bun bo hue platter was jawdroppingly good. I never had anything like it before. I didn't know there were vietnamese dishes that utilized mochi flour and now I can never go back. Every single item was so good. The mochi was cooked so perfectly as every bite was so chewy and soft with no hard clumps at all. The meat that came with them as well were so sweet and tender. The vermicelli plate was awesome too as you can make a wrap with the lettuce and veggies and rice noodles and they all come together to mouthwatering perfection. I found a new spot to hyperfixate on whenever I come to houston.

My favorite appetizers (in order): Banh beo chen, Banh ram it, banh bot loc, egg rolls, crystal dumplings. Personally I wasn't a fan of the paste-y texture of the banh nam but that is a personal preference! Service is not the most hospitable but very quick. We were reseated after spotting a cockroach under our table. But even so I would come back to have this amazing food any day.

Came in to eat on a Saturday night around 8PM. They take walk ins, but we made reservations and I…read moream so glad we did. Upon arriving, every table was taken except our table w a reserved sign on it. The restaurant was bustling, but I could still hear my husband over the music and noise. The menu is huge!!! I didn't know where to start. But our server, Vanessa, helped us make a few choices. We started off w bánh xèo tostadas, bánh béo, & carpaccio. Then we had calamari and their steak special. I asked for a side of papaya slaw for some veggies. My favorite dish of the night was the carpaccio. So many flavors perfectly melded together. Loved the crunch of the fried onions and peanuts. 10/10 dish, in my opinion. Authentic banh xèo usually has an airier, crisp crepe, but theirs was more crunchy - great for their tostada take. Very flavorful. Each piece had one shrimp, but plenty of pork belly bites. The nuoc mam drizzled on it was tasty. Fried calamari - this is a big dish for, I believe, $'19. I prefer the dipping sauce on the side so that the batter doesn't get soggy. This did happen here, but it didn't stop us from finishing every last bite. The green sauce was good, not the usual dipping sauce for fried calamari. Steak special - they have another steak dish on their menu, but this one was pepper crusted w smashed potatoes. The potatoes were super crispy and flavorful and the steak was perfectly cooked - a beautiful pink medium rare. The portion was huge and justified the $39 price point. The staple steak dish came with a papaya slaw and I had to have it. It was bright and limey - I can see why they serve it with their steak. Bánh beo - my least favorite of the night. A bit thicker than I like. Still good, but there were a lot of other great dishes that I could easily pass on this one. Try their hibiscus artichoke tea.

We got there 15 minutes before to make sure we could find parking. They have a small lot but all the spaces were taken despite being before 6 pm on a weekday. And a few spots had noticeable broken glass so be careful. We fortunately found street parking close by; double checked the signs because I ain't getting towed for nothing. Then I double checked inside with staff to make sure where I parked was ok. On to the food: we got several happy hour appetizer items: soy garlic wings, Brussels sprouts, bao bun, roasted oysters. All was good but not amazing. I then ordered the pho tai chinh for myself - I was quite impressed with the portions and the price! Wifey got the lemongrass pork banh mi - good but not amazing. Overall I would say the food taste and portions were good, but note this is elevated Asian cuisine, so it'll run you $20-$30 minimum. Now the service - definitely super friendly staff. It was our first time there so maybe they brought out the extra friendliness. Even the chef came out and greeted us to make sure we liked the food. Waitress was very kind and checked on our table a LOT. Almost too much. Overall a good experience, yummy food, not a fan of the parking (a common problem in the Heights), and expensive for Asian food but that's expected. Enjoy!

This is a higher end fine dining restaurant so you should expect the portion sizes and price to be pretty comparable to a lot of other finer dining restaurants. Overall the food's flavor was fantastic. I ordered the king salmon clay pot. I thought the salmon was so tasty! They added pepper and sauce to the salmon - It was tender and flavorful and paired nicely with white rice. The quail (not pictured below) also was super flavorful and was cooked so well it tasted like beef. The soup was also light and refreshing, similar to a west lake soup. It was thicker consistency and had cilantro and chucks of lobster. The drinks served were also super balanced. We ordered the mojito and the dragon fruit cocktail. The mojito was the right balance between minty and sweet with just a hint of alcohol flavor. For the dragon fruit cocktail, it was very fruity, on the sweeter side but not overpowering and was topped with egg whites to give it a little bit of frothiness. I will say, we are slightly underdressed to enter this establishment. Everything seemed so luxurious and many people were in formal business wear! Keep this in mind if you go! There is a parking deck right next to the location as well, both self parking and valet!
