Wakefield, VA--Road Trip #7 To those of you who are loyal readers, this is the last installment of my road trip to Richmond. If you are new, welcome! After I finished visiting at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, I headed back home to Suffolk, but I had one more stop before my journey was complete. I needed to get my grub on so I set my sights on Virginia Diner (VD). I had actually been there a few times before, but that was my pre-Yelp days. I wanted to try their fried chicken, and write a review along with pictures, of course. VD has been serving the community of Wakefield for over 85 years. Their home-style Southern dishes and a family, casual atmosphere is what regulars and visitors flock here for. They also sell items in the store (and online at www.vadiner.com) and VD is proudly called "The Peanut Capital of the World." Also, VD was on the show "Diners, Drives-Ins, and Dives" back in 2008 (season 3--episode 3). Since it was a weekday, I had no problem getting a table. The interior is your typical diner: kind of sad with red and white checkered tablecloths, some pictures on the walls, and hardly any color throughout. My waitress was friendly and did a great job taking care of my needs. I ordered the ¼ Fried Chicken with two sides (candied yams and collards) and biscuits for $9.59. I don't eat a lot of fried chicken, but I thought it was quite tasty. The skin was crispy and flavorful, and the meat was nice and moist, which is most important to me. I'd had their candied yams before and I love them. Delicious! The collards was new for me to try, and I thought it was well made. The greens still had a bit of bite to them, and I could both taste and see the ham hocks in the collards. VD's biscuits are just okay when we're talking about a Southern diner; they really need to step it up in that regard. Overall, I was satisfied with my meal especially with the value. I wouldn't come out of my way to visit this place, but if you need a meal on the road, it's a good option. Make sure you save room for their World Famous Peanut Pie--I was full that day, but I did try it once before. Or, get a whole pie to go! read more

Good Ole Southern! This place has been around for years. Located on US 460 in Wakefield Virginia right in the middle of peanut country. People come from miles to try this food. The collard greens and cornbread is to die for and the peach cobbler is of its own. Very busy on the weekends so you can expect waits up to 45 minutes. If you do come, do so doing off-periods of the day like between lunch and dinner, its daily slow then. On this particular day grill orders were a 45 minute wait so I highly recommend the buffet. I'm really conflicted with my review score for this place. The food we ate was probably 3-4 stars but our experience was more like 2 stars. It was a Saturday afternoon around 2 pm when we walked in, the lobby area was filled with people. I gave our name to the hostess and she said 15 minute wait(not too bad) We tried to shop around the store area but there was sooo many people waiting for a table it was just too claustrophobic. We decided to hide off in a corner near the bathrooms. This is wear the experience starts to take a dive... The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting!!! I'd say a truck stop would probably be better than how these ones looked. In the men's bathroom my husband (who was wearing flip flops) said there was standing water on the floor (barf), pieces of toilet paper with poop on them on the floor in the hallway to the bathroom, filthy counters, etc... After that we started looking around and noticed the floors in this place looked like they hadn't been cleaned in weeks, maybe months! Where we were standing waiting for our table we could see staff going in and out of a room that must've been their employee lounge. The lockers in the room had a nasty almost black film of dirt and grease on them. I looked at my husband and said could you imagine using that store your valuables blah! So needless to say this place needs a thorough cleaning. Our name was called and were sat down. The first impression of our waitress wasn't great. She came over and proceeded to say: "I'm just going to be upfront with you guys and tell you that food is taking a minimum of an hour to come out of the kitchen. Now I know you've been waiting a while for a table already so I'm gonna suggest our buffet. It's got over 15 items from fried chicken to baked spaghetti to banana pudding. Now it's only $15.95 for adults and I'll give you a deal on the kids and only charge you $5.95 for them! I'll give you a few minutes to take a look at the buffet and then I'll come back. But I'm not kidding you about that wait time on the food from the kitchen. It's backed up" We looked around and nearly everyone was getting them buffet. But I got the impression the whole kitchen being backed up was just a spiel for them to make more $$. Almost everything on the menu was under $10 so if you can push that buffet and make $16 a person do it right?!? When the waitress came back I let her know we'd be ordering off the menu. My hubby and I decided to share the fried chicken platter that came with 2 sides and biscuits while my daughter got the kids meal chicken strips. We also saw a plate of onion rings go by us and they looked amazing so we ordered a basket of those also. After about 15-20 minutes from ordering our waitress came out with the food...1 hour my ass HA! Everything was hot, especially that chicken! It was very hot, fresh, and juicy. It had good flavor also. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was good fried chicken. For our sides we got mac&cheese which was good, and the black eyed peas which were very under seasoned, like no flavor at all! Onion rings looked amazing but the breading was a little soggy and not seasoned either. My daughter enjoyed her chicken strips. While some of the food was good the experience just killed this place for me. We won't be coming back and I don't think I'd recommend either. read more

On the journey of life sometimes it's best to take the road less traveled. When you do you come across great places like the Virginia Diner. Forget about fast food burger joints, come in for some good old-fashioned quality home cooking. For me it was the farmers breakfast, complete with flapjacks eggs bacon hashbrowns good coffee and a glass orange juice.. Combine that with friendly attentive staff and you've got a great experience. Let me start by saying my review is strictly on the buffet. We are not buffet eaters by any means but were told to give it a try. I will admit the food selection was a little limited in my opinion. However, the food that was on the buffet at the time of our visit was good. Baked Chicken, Fried Catfish, Liver, Fried Okra, Carrot Soufflé which I didn't know what I was eating at first, Baked Flounder, and Green Beans. They also had fried Corn on the Cob which probably would have be great fresh out of the grease but sitting on a buffet, YUCK. The banana pudding looked watered down. Driving home from the beach- decided to stop for a late lunch, early dinner. I felt as though we were eating at my grandmothers home. Staff was warm and friendly. Food was incredible!! We got a ribeye, with fried apples and Onion rings, open faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes, hush puppies and Mac and cheese. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and biscuits... everything was hot and delicious!!! Finally for dessert a hot fudge brownie Sunday- YUM, YUM!! Stopped for lunch on a busy Friday for the first time in a couple of years. We noticed a lighter atmosphere with some younger employees. Our ham biscuits and Brunswick stew were both excellent but served separately at a higher price rather than as a combo plate. The sweet potato side dish was very good and the collards have changed with more stem pieces and flavor a bit more bitter than the last many years I have been coming here. My apple pie with ice cream was excellent as before and the lemon chess pie was also very good! The sweet tea was still good and the peach flavored tea was tasty. I viewed all of the options, seasonings, sizes and decided on three items, it was the weekend of New Year's so there was a great promo code for 18% off as well (thank you!). The worst food I have ever eaten and the waitress wasn't very nice. I couldn't eat hardly any of the food I received. The green tomatoes wasn't cooked long enough and didn't have much taste, the Waldorf salad had old apples that looked like it set for a few days and was far too sweet and tasted like it was going bad. The spoon bread tasted like paste. Would never eat here again. Will not leave a tip. The manager was very nice and removed the salad from my tab. The other employees were nice also. read more

We drive up there every few months for breakfast. The quality has gone down hill. Frozen dried up chicken nuggets. No more hash browns with onions. They have frozen hash brown tater tots. Breakfast was ok. French toast yummy. However when the bill came I noticed a $3.00 convenience fee on our bill. I asked the cashier what this was and she said it's for credit cards. I said why would I be charged a convenience fee for using a credit card when you don't know how I'm paying the bill? She threw my receipt in the trash and said I can remove the fee if you're paying with cash. I didn't like the fried shrimp, it's just butterfly shrimp from the grocery store and it costs 14.99!? Both my parents said they were better with cocktail sauce but I don't like cocktail sauce and I decided to stray away from it. However the green beans were very good even though they had an odd salty aftertaste. That was all good and all but the Men's bathrooms smelled like an unkept litter box! I came back in later and the stench wasn't as bad, but I was only in there for a minute or two washing my hands. Not only is the restaurant truly beautiful, worthy of Restaurant Impossible's design experts, but the food is markedly improved. The fried shrimp is the best I've ever had anywhere, including the cocktail sauce. The peanut butter silk pie still delights. We were looking for a place for dinner and saw a billboard, so my wife looked up the menu and saw they had fried pork chops. When we got to the diner my wife asked about the pork chops and was told that "she wouldn't want those, 3 people had ordered them that day and sent them back". She asked what they would recommend and the waitress said we should go with the buffet. I asked about the meat loaf and was told that wasn't any good either. My brother was driving up from Florida and going to northern Virginia and wanted to meet with me. So, since he had eaten here previously this was his choice of food. It was a pretty drive from Virginia Beach and I enjoyed seeing all the cotton fields! Upon arrival, I noticed a nice large parking lot with many spaces. I am always nervous of never finding parking!! We walked in and there was a cute little area with goodies to buy, especially peanuts!! My brother already had a table which was nice. Once we sat down our waitress was very quick to ask us what we wanted to drink. I really like that because she was paying attention. I looked over the menu and knew I wanted something with eggs. I always get bacon so I wanted to try the ham!! I got the two egg breakfast with ham and seasoned potatoes. The potatoes were delicious and the eggs cooked over medium were perfect. No antique vendor roasting peanuts greeted us at the door, in fact no one greeted us at the door. We had to flag down a waitress who walked past us twice. It was busy, but never saw a manager. Came expecting a fresh hot diner-style luncheon, but was quickly disappointed when I asked the waitress if there was a lunch menu or lunch specials, she said, no. I was confused, at 1:15 pm. no lunch? Wait. What? A diner without a lunch specials or lunch menu? So we decided to start with the famous country ham biscuits, which were good, however they were tiny and falling apart and looked nothing like the pic on the website. Seems overpriced, $8.50, for what you get. The famous Rail Car Burger was very flavorful & delicious and the Country Fried Steak with gravy, mashed potato's and gravy and green beans, did not disappoint, yum! We'd order both of these again, for sure! The the mac & cheese was barely warm, cold within a couple minutes, but my husband said, it was ok for him.
