Nice place inside decor wise looked clean. Food was a little sub par Wifes fries and Mac and cheese was cold as the bowl Mac and cheese was in was hot so microwaved but not stirred at all. Onion rings greasy and cold I got the open face beef it was ok but not very good to order again although mashed taters were good. Waitress was very good although we were told no managers are on shift at all which seems strange but the waitress did a good job keeping us happy so saving grace for this place was waitress on staff. This was an ok place. I'm disappointed because it's been on my bucket list for many years. Thursday morning in the summer, not very busy, but also not very friendly. We were greeted and seated range away but the waitress was very standoffish. The entire vibe of the restaurant was very odd. Other waitresses would walk by and look at our table, stand around and state at us and that made me uncomfortable. The waitress did tell me the ham was salty but so salty that it was inedible? No, that was the most terrible ham I've ever had. I asked for a suggestion of something I can't get anywhere else. Well, I wouldn't serve that if I owned a restaurant either. Well after reading some of the reviews about ordering from the menu or the Buffett went with the buffet! I was very happy with the food selection the green beans needed some seasoning but all yummy. The actual restaurant is beautiful, spacious and welcoming. The food is a hit or a miss, I genuinely think it's the difference in what cook is there. I've never thought it was bad but I have had meals I was disappointed in. Though all the same I've had amazing food! Their meatloaf is my favorite from any restaurant I've been too. The buffet I did once and wouldn't repeat. The food had been out too long and was dry. The service is friendly and helpful and can even handle large tables with ease. There are three things I want to mention with this place and an honorable mention. 1- Management is on top of it. The manager (woman with cute short cut and glasses) was on her A game. My sister's food was not going to be ready with our food and she immediately came out and addressed it. She was also in the trenches with the wait staff. Very present and pleasant. 2- Nice job with the remodeling and I can appreciate how they have the buffet set up for an ongoing pandemic. 3- The carrot soufflé.. I mean damn.. who is responsible for this national treasure? Don't EVER take this off the menu. I would like to try it on some pie crust please. Since I visited from the Richmond area, I enjoyed the drive through the country to visit and the decor of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and inviting. My 17 year old son and I decided to take a ride in the country, yesterday. We jumped in the Yukon, and drove 60+ miles to the Virginia Diner, featured on Diners, Drive-In's, and Dives. I had country ham biscuits, Brunswick stew, collards, and some kinda carrot soufflé. Our waitress, Amy, who was wonderful, gave me a sample of the veggies, because I had never tried them before! Delicious! Matthew had ham biscuits, fries, and peanut pie. My goodness, the peanut pie was outstanding, especially with vanilla ice cream. We ended up leaving with a can of chocolate covered peanuts. I realize, a long way to go for lunch, but an enjoyable day with my son. Plus, he was my driver. Totally recommend the Virginia Diner. Not what it use to be for sure....Ordered a burger and it should have came out with a cattle tag on it. Rawest burger I ever had. Truth, first review I ever wrote about a restaurant. Never again, sorry.....nor would I ever recommend. Should have spent more time updating your cooks instead of your floors. Not to mention no paper towels to wash hands in the bathroom. Good Luck!!! Over priced under flavored family pot luck food is my best description of it. Once was more than enough for a lifetime. We won't be back. Tonight, as my wife and I travelled back from Norfolk to our lovely home, we decided to drop by Virginia Diner for some post-Ikea grub. We decided against the Swedish Meatballs this time and hoped for better as we traveled homeward. We arrived at about 6:15...and I saw there was a buffet. I am usually pretty excited when I see a buffet, as I am what can be described as somewhat rotund, and this was no different. We were seated and told the waitress that we would just have the buffet and some sweet tea. I quickly got up and got to it... To be fair, I will only comment on the food I had...so let's go. The iced tea had two strikes against it. 1. It was not sweet enough. (Hey just add some sugar," you might say. To which I would reply, "this is Virginia Diner...in Virginia, so I should not have to.") 2. The tea tasted like the place had horrible tasting water. There was a bad aftertaste due to, well...I don't know. I assume it was the water. Yuck. Maybe install a filter...or a better filter if you have one? I don't know what can be done there. On to the edibles (and I use that word loosely). The fried chicken was okay. No better than KFC on an average day. It was chicken that had been sitting there a while and was, well...meh, at best. Fortunately, there was some hot sauce on the table to give it some flavor. The ribs were horrid. I'm pretty sure they had been served for days and reheated at least a couple of times. The meat was...well...you know what happens when you leave meat in the slow-cooker for way too long and it gets mushy and weird. That was the ribs. Mushy and weird. The ham...oh, let's talk about the ham. Virginia Diner is supposed to be known for their ham, or so I thought. It did not taste bad...in fact the flavor was as good as any other cold cut ham I have had...which brings me to the issue: It was cold, but served on a hot buffet. I am Serve-Safe certified in great Commonwealth of Virginia (stands at attention with "Dixie" playing the background), and if I remember my course and the test that followed, hot food is to be kept at 140 degrees F on a buffet line, otherwise it goes into the "danger zone." Well, I guess I was safe, as this was below the danger zone, which is 40 degrees F. I mean it was cold...like, someone took it out of the fridge and dumped it directly on the steam tray cold. I like cold ham, so I ate it. But that's not how this works, and they should know better. I told the waitress and she brought me a plate of ham and asked me to try it. I did, after she walked away, and the piece I had was warm on one side and ice cold on the other. (Insert eye roll here) The banana pudding had pudding that was either from a can or it was cooked. Knowing the lack of giving a crap I saw in other food, I have to assume it was canned pudding. I know that flavor as I volunteer in a large kitchen that uses shortcuts like canned pudding. It was just okay at best...I've had better in most places I've been though. But, luckily for me, banana pudding is kinda like pizza: even when it's bad, it's still pretty good...so it is what is it. Now, the sweet potato casserole. That was outstandingly good. Like, "I wanna buy some and take it home," good. Either someone cared about that, or it was a fluke. I truly believe someone just knows how to do it and put there heart into that one...earning the one star I could give. On to the two non-edible things that bugged me: 1. I was given one napkin which wrapped my fork and butter knife. Come on folks...this is a buffet with fried chicken and bad sticky ribs...I am going to need more than one napkin. ("But you can ask for more!" Right, but I shouldn't have to on a buffet with fried chicken and sticky ribs.) 2. This is sort of an after-thought...but maybe someone should have a chat with the wait staff and let them know not to talk about how badly they want to go home in front of customers. Wait staff is there for one purpose: to serve customers, of which, I am one. So, by default, they are there to serve me. When we walked in, three waiters were standing there as one told the others how they wished it were time to go home. When I hear that, I assume I am going to be treated as a road block to them achieving their personal goal of not working and instead, hanging out with friends or playing PS4. I am sorry, but I am going to require you to do your job for at least 20 more minutes while I dine with an insincere smile due to poor food quality. As we checked out, the young lady behind the counter made a comment about wishing she were going home. Seriously? Okay, maybe I should not be so harsh...I am sure there were days I felt that way as a young person, and even know...but I just don't let customers know how I feel. It really ruins the experience for them. I am not expecting high class dining here...I get it, but professionalism goes a long way, even at country restaurants. People love this place. I'm so disappointed! I'm here for the breakfast buffet and they don't have anywhere near the selection they used to have! The frozen potato rounds tasted like they were fried in fish grease. The hash browns from real potatoes are not available. The sausages are round and skinny not like the good fat ones they used to have. The fried apples don't have the same yummy flavor they once had. They have taken the country goodness of the fresh made flavorful food and turned it into geriatric bland skimpy food with hardly any selection and still pricey. I will not be back. Ok so the Virginia Ham is supposed to be salty and I was, in all fairness, warned by the waitress. (It's not like I'm not from Virginia. I've had my share of Virginia Ham.) But, dang, it was SO salty. Mouth shock! Delicious little tiny biscuits for the ham biscuit platter. Also, never had a Waldorf salad with peanuts and peanut dressing. Perfect combination and the peanut dressing was the perfect touch of sweetness. I thought it was interesting and delicious. My husband had the 4pc fried chicken with mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, and biscuit basket. All tasty. My platter also came with warm homemade peanut pie. I don't know what the bad comments are about. We stopped in at 10am on a Sunday morning for breakfast and had a very pleasant time. We were seated immediately and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Not once did I manage to completely empty my coffee cup and our food came out hot and quick. The buffet looked good and was stocked with bacon, eggs, biscuits, gravy, ham, french toast sticks, sticky buns and a few other odds and ends with a gal making fresh waffles down at the end. We weren't hungry enough for the buffet so we ordered two oatmeals and a biscuits and gravy from the al a carte menu. The biscuits and gravy were the best I've had anywhere. There were big chunks of sausage and tons of pepper in it and the ratio of biscuit to gravy was perfect. I had to stop myself from licking the olate. The oatmeal was typical runny oatmeal, but I never expect much from oatmeal. No bells and whistles, just some sliced bananas on top but hot, fesh and totally edible. You could tell it was steel cut oats and not the instant stuff. Overall, we had a nice experience and want to come again for dinner in the future to see what the rest of the menu is like. read more

So we were headed toward Richmond Va by way of 460 and we stopped here for breakfast. I ordered a Belgian Waffle, one egg, and hash browns. Coffee was brought to our table initially, but we had to ask for a refill. :-( Literally 20 min later I received my "egg and hash browns" and my wife received her whole order. Country ham, biscuits, cheese eggs and apples. We didn't want the buffet. After finishing my egg and hash, I finally received my waffle! It should be advertised as just a waffle NOT Belgian Waffle. Our server was very nice and accommodating, I do not blame my whole experience on her (aside from the coffee, most was out of her control) I fault management. They were clearly under staffed and poorly run. It seemed that the concentration was on the buffet being refilled, but those of us who ordered from the menu were put on hold. I say that because it took 30 min for a gentleman who sat at the next table "AFTER" us to receive three ham biscuits! Really 30 min to put ham between a biscuit with a cold piece of cheese? Well we have been here before and had dinner (Not Memorable) and now that we had their breakfast. I have my doubts about Guy Fieri and why this diner was featured on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives! We stopped in today on our way to the OBX. I ordered the stew/ham biscuit meal and hunny had the grilled ham & cheese. Heather took our order and brought it out to the car. She was so pleasant and friendly. The meal was delivered quickly and was piping hot. The ham and cheese came with chips and a garlicky pickle. The bread was perfectly buttered, grilled Texas toast. Hubby was not disappointed. My ham biscuits were delicious: fresh, fluffy biscuits and thinly sliced ham. The stew was made with chicken and barbecue and was quite a treat. We've eaten here before on the way to the beach and we're satisfied so stopped again. There was a marked difference this time, both in food quality and service. My wife had a chicken wrap which consisted of a very dry piece of chicken breast and very little else. My burger was just ok. The worst part was the service. We had to ask for several things and we needed to chase down the server three times. Very inattentive and slow. Disappeared altogether several times. Left us waiting for several minutes for the bill. I was passing through on business and looking for some where to eat. Was very excited to try after reading reviews on Yelp. However, I must say it's a lot of hype. It is was way over priced! Had the prices been lower then my review would have more stars. For the money that is charged the food is not up to standard. It is just your basic southern food and I have had much better. The coleslaw was good and probably my favorite, because good coleslaw is hard to find. The dessert was good but super sweet and couldn't eat it all. At first bite l had to look at the expiration date on the can of these so called gourmet salted peanuts. Good for another 17 months, but somehow lousy now! I've been buying and gifting these for years; they used to be uniquely crispy and crunchy, but now the K- Mart of peanuts, as in "what's the cheapest way to do this?" No returns, no refunds. We found this place by accident when my car's GPS sent us on an unusual route from Virginia Beach back to NW Georgia. It turned out to be a good accident since the scenery was nice and we stumbled onto the Virginia Diner. It was mid morning and we had left VA Beach without eating so we were ready for some breakfast. I don't know what the other meals are like but they offer more than enough choices to satisfy anyone for breakfast. Plenty to eat and good quality food for a very reasonable price. The menu and prices are similar to Cracker Barrel. We were promptly seated at a neat and clean table right at the window. Our waitress was there quickly to give us coffee and water and take our order when we were ready. The meals were there very quickly and were great. The location is right in the middle of Virginia peanut country so the diner has a gift shop loaded with canned peanuts in almost any flavor you could imagine. We bought two of the smaller cans of regular salted peanuts and they are very good. Not crusted in salt like some but just enough to perk up the nuts. As an added bonus if you find a flavor you really like, you can order them from the Diner on Amazon. If you find yourself off the beaten path trying to navigate your way from the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area and trying to get back to the interstate you won't go wrong giving the place a try. read more
