Could not have asked for a better LASIK experience! I had wanted the procedure done for quite some time. Being new to the area, I did my due diligence to find the best facility and providers in the area, Dr Scoper and Virginia Eye Consultants fit the bill. The staff was super friendly (from the front desk staff, to the techs, nurses and doctors). I felt the wait time was fair - I didn't feel like my time was taken for granted. It was just a very smooth process. I knew what to expect at all steps. My favorite part was how the practice was flexible with my schedule. Something as simple as checking in online and being able to email the staff (instead of calling in) with questions was super helpful. It was also a beautiful and clean facility. Aside from the multiple hours long wait to see the doctor, there are continuing billing issues when you provide their billing department with information from your insurance company that you owe $0. I have been fighting with their billing since March 2025. They are refusing to bill my mother's secondary insurance. Why is it not possible to rate this business zero or below? My mother is 82 years old, has severe edema and has to wait 1-2 hours after scheduled time to even be seen by a doctor. This is utterly ridiculous, her eyesight has not improved in all the time she's been coming here. Not to mention she is unable to drive because of her eyesight and has to rely on others to bring her and they then also have to wait several hours. Perhaps Virginia Eye Consultants should provide a free taxi service due to their inability to schedule properly and adhere to their schedule. Poor service, worst I've ever encountered, a total mistreatment of the elderly. Expect to wait 2.5 to 3 hours per appt. Even the sign in the waiting room states that. So if you have leave to burn they have snacks, juice and coffee. Apparently MDs flight was late this morning so 2 hours in there are still 4 people ahead of me. Now if you are 15 min late you have to reschedule. You can't call me and say, hey we are backed up approximately 2 hours. You want me to respect your time and you don't respect mine? Have had nothing but trouble with my left eye after cataract surgery. Right eye is fine. Had dislocated lens, surgeon blamed me even though it happened right after surgery, repaired that but blurry wavy vision in that eye and then had a detached retina in that eye. Spoke with office manager and she said they have talked to upper management about the wait times and given suggestions that were all dismissed. The surgeon for my retina was awesome Dr Saleb. Do NOT see Dr. Scoper. He did unneeded cataract surgery on both my eyes at age 60. I should not have trusted him. Even his surgery scheduling staff told me I did not need cataract surgery. I should have trusted her over the doctor. He failed to warn me of dangerous risks like PVD which I got about a year after surgery. PVD often happens after cataract surgery but he never told me that. Further he said I could get floaters which I never had but he said they would quickly go away. Wrong. They are permanent unless a brain gets used to them or they eventually may sink out of view. I now have 15 percent risk of retinal tear that often leads to detachment if not treated quickly. I got PCO (cloudy lens) in both eyes shortly after surgery. If Dr. Scoper did a better job during cataract surgery, it would likely have not occurrred. He failed to warn me of that outcome until after cataract surgery. He said afterwards younger people are likely to get that. A YAG procedure then is required which is more money for them and more risk of retinal detachment, etc. to patient. He failed to warn that YAG is risky. He failed to warn of permanent dry eyes from cataract surgery also. I never had dry eyes and now that is a constant problem from cataract surgery . Lubricating costly eyedrops do not help. I did not need at age 60 cataract surgery as neither cataract was swrious at all to need to be remoned for many years to come if ever but he went forward. I regret trusting Dr. Scoper. When I went back to question him with my problems, he lied. I now have to get trifocals to avoid a YAG procedure in the other eye to lessen all the risks he created by doing unnecessary cataract surgery that led to PCO and failing to inform me of all the risks. He committed medical malpractice in all these ways. I now have nausea and severe headaches daily with my very blurred right eye from PCO that formed solely as a result of cataract surgery by him. Further, although way less serious, as other reviews state, they over-book patients even though they know or state they are short-staffed. Dr. Scoper blamed the routine 2 or 3 hour waits on their being short-staffed after COVID ended. Stop over-booking patients then. WARNING TO ALL: Go to another facility. Other doctors I saw there did not advise me of YAG surgery risks or answer questions properly or provide knowledge either and were not good. Goal instead is make as money as possible. I had cataract surgery with them and dr miller was great but the Hampton office has no idea on scheduling appointments. No one bothered to tell me before my first appointment not to wear contacts for 2 weeks so all my tests couldn't be done. Then my dr was leaving and they wanted me to come back to meet a new one ( I live over an hour away) I said no and they arranged my meeting dr miller that day! My second eye surgery was 2 hours late. Today I was supposed to see the doctor but after waiting an hour and asking how much longer I was told they were running 3 hours behind! I have never had to wait for any dr that long! I ended up with the nurse doing my check up because I wasn't waiting another 2 hours. I had cataract surgery on Aug 31 and Sept 12. Never saw surgeon again for any post op visits. Multiple big floaters within a week of each surgery causing difficulty with blurring halos and unable to drive at night. Complaints were brushed off as normal and told I would get used to them being there. Follow ups were very condescending in nature and I felt as if I was a burden complaining. Only offer for help was to have another surgery to remove all fluid from eyes and replace. Second opinion sought from another practice and found out that there is another treatment for floaters not involving surgery. Will not return to that practice and will definitely not recommend them to anyone. read more

Dr Yeu did my lasik surgery. She was very helpful in explaining the different cost options and the probable results. The surgery on both eyes worked very well. I had the most expensive option but i am very happy with it. No more glasses needed. I had been wearing glasses for 60 years, with the annual cost for exams and probable cost for clear and sunglasses. It was well worth the expense. The staff at the Surgicenter did a great job. They are very busy but other practices are no better. The same procedure in Kitty Hawk has a 3 month wait. My thanks to Dr Yeu and the staff at the surgicenter. read more

An eye surgery by Dr Joly to correct my browness should have been one and done! They put anchors up underneath my eyebrows which caused severe pain then a few months later everything went back to where I started. They tried to correct the mistake and put me with a new dr (Dr Abugo) who instead created a second set of eyebrows above the ones God gave me leaving jagged scars and still excess skin on my right eyelid. SEVEN procedures later and numerous follow up appointments (at their expense other than more time off from work for recovery to try and fix it... lasering etc) and it is still not fixed! They said that they showed me pictures at the conference table of what it was going to look like after the second surgery which is a lie as I never met their manager, Theresa Cartwright, nor have a had a face to face meeting with them! Obviously there is someone else in the same boat as me. They have "dissolved" the relationship and said there is nothing else they can do. This was a much needed procedure to correct my vision NOT cosmetic! They put me through the ringer for almost 2 years!!! Their customer service skills are horrible. they never return phone calls, I called over a dozen times to schedule a surgery and wasn't able to do so until another doctor got involved. I remember getting glasses in the 5th grade, contacts in 8th, and hating how I had to rely on them daily to function. Getting Lasik was sort of a spontaneous, end of year procedure, as my husband's FSA funds were set to expire. I was amazed at how easy it was to schedule my appointments, it seemed like they had an appointment time for any need. Dr. Yeu is absolutely amazing. I felt comfortable around her during my consult, and she really put me at ease the day of my procedure - I was a mess of nerves! All of the support staff I interacted with was kind as well. I couldn't have asked for a better procedure. It was really cool to get the DVD to show my husband afterwards, as he wasn't able to join me that day. I'm now just shy of 4 weeks post op and have 20/20 vision. It's an incredible feeling not needing to reach for glasses or mess with contacts every morning. This place is huge and seems to have all the latest and greatest in technology. They can do pretty much everything from basic testing to surgery inhouse. My wife was referred here after a routine test for eyeglasses revealed some minor abnormalities. When we first walked in we were immediately greeted and given some paperwork to fill out since it was our first visit. Upon completion of the paperwork we took care of the copay then were directed back to the waiting area. I appreciated that they made sure we knew where the vending area and coffee areas were located. The place was pretty full and the front staff seemed a little unorganized and chaotic but everything somehow worked. We left our home without our morning coffee so we ventured to the coffee machine. Wow! The coffee machine is amazing, it dispenses everything from regular brewed coffee to espresso to lattes to cappuccino to Chai tea to hot chocolate and more. My wife got a latte and I got a cappuccino, the coffee was actually very good. We also enjoyed some tasty complementary cookies. Having read some reviews which indicated lengthy wait times we settled in but the wait wasn't bad at all. After maybe 15 minutes we were given some literature and a portable DVD player on which to watch a video explaining glaucoma. We were only a few minutes into the video when we were escorted to testing area where they ran some tests on my wife's eyes. After the preliminary tests we resumed watching the video in another waiting area. Again, we only watched about five minutes until we were taken to the exam room where the doctor would be seeing us. An assistant asked some questions and prepared us to see the doctor, she was very helpful. We resumed watching the video during which time the doctor entered the room and introduced herself. She said she would wait until we finished the video before proceeding because she felt it was important. After we finished the video we asked a few questions which Dr. Dewundara was happy to answer. She then proceeded with a thorough examination and more testing, she explained every step of the process and was very polite, friendly and professional throughout our time there. She showed us test results on the monitor and explained them very well. She said there was one area that needed further testing so we would need another appointment in a couple of months. We were very impressed with Dr. Dewundara and feel fortunate for my wife to be under her care. We were escorted to the checkout area where we received a followup appointment and were on our way. The stand-alone building has it's own spacious parking lot so there are no parking worries. Overall we were very pleased with our visit to Virginia Eye Consultants. We were impressed with the state-of-the-art facility, the friendly and helpful staff and the quality of care we received. read more

Horrible organization. Trying to have a stye removed under my eye for months. First appt was canceled at the last minute due to an "emergency", so I rescheduled. 2nd appt was canceled even though it was scheduled for 2 weeks out with no explanation. 3rd appt canceled the day before for no given reason. Dr Salib in the Retina Surgery center on the 2nd Floor gets 5 stars...... very professional and really did some great work on partially detached retina. Awesome and cant say enough about him. Went back for a follow up from the surgery. Appointment at 1:45. Didnt get seen seen until 3:30 with a pending plane to catch at 5. Waited almost 2 hrs to have the DR check me for 5 minutes. My opinion: If the DR is running late with appts, they should tell you when you walk in there. Not a very professional way to do business. read more

The staff at the Military Highway location are wonderful. They quickly greet you and offer you coffee, tea and yummy shortbread cookies. VA Eye consultants always works to coordinate care with my sister's primary care physician and eye doctor without us making us carry records all around town. They also work with our pharmacist to make sure the prescription they provide is covered by her medical plan. We have seen Dr. Whitley, Dr. Salib and Dr. Joly. Wonderful professionals! The reason for the four instead of five are the wait times to see the doctors. I do understand that this a specialized eye treatment facility but the wait times should not exceed 30 minutes after initial check in but they usually do. When you finally get to the doctor the wait is worth the added time but it is inconvenient if you have another appointment. If you have concerns about the prescriptions or recommendations you rceive from another eye care professional this is the practice to visit for clarity. read more

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE!!!!! From the moment, I made my appointment for a consultation to the very end of the surgery, it was amazing! At my consultation, the entire staff was super friendly and made me feel comfortable. They walked me through all the different test they were going to do on my eyes, answered any question I had and even got to know a little about me. (Which made me feel like a person whether than a potential patient) Dr. Starling, which I was referred to by my sons ophthalmologist, was such a delight and extremely knowledgeable. He broke down the different produces, PRK AND LASIK, and what each recovery time would be like. And allowed me to decide what I wanted rather than push me towards what he wanted for me. After deciding that I would go through with LASIK, Leesa was my main point of contact and a pleasure each time. She was genuinely kind, caring and extremely knowledgeable. The day of my procedure, again everyone was super nice and helpful. Leesa was such a pleasure and ease any fear that I had. She kept my family and me well informed the entire time. Leesa was so sweet and so positive the entire time which made the experience that much better. During the surgery, Dr. Starling and his staff were beyond professional. He spoke to me throughout the entire procedure and kept asking how I was doing. He continually gave me compliments of how well I was holding up. Next thing you knew I was all done. Dr. Starling and his staff were so friendly, professional and most importantly kind. They truly love what they do and show it in every way. I am so happy I went through with the surgery and even happier that I went with Dr. Starling and his team. I recommend Virginia Eye Consultants for LASIK eye surgery over any other place. I had LASIK here at the end of January (Dr. Scoper). I was very impressed with both Dr. Scoper and the staff and the results of my procedure are amazing. It has been 3 months since my correction from -6 in both eyes, the results are amazing. I visited 4 different area LASIK providers before setting on Dr. Scoper. The facility is pretty impressive, and they obviously move a lot of patients through here, but I found the staff to be friendly and caring. I'd recommend Dr. Scoper/VEC to anyone. read more

It is unrealistic to require patients to be there for 3 to 5 hours, which we have been, every visit. The office staff is very pleasant, and Dr. Shepherd is wonderful, but the wait time is enough for us to find a new doctor. It is just ridiculous and completely inconsiderate. Very disappointing. The wait time is the major contributor to us finding a new doctor, however our interaction with Dr. Whitley today was the last straw. Dr. Scoper and Virginia Eye Consultants came highly recommended by the optometrist and a family friend. Unfortunately, the office visits and surgeries did not meet expectations. The office is in a high-volume optical surgery complex. Wait times were extremely long. Office and medical staff were rushed and didn't take the time to listen to the patient. Dr. Scoper was rather brusque, verging on condescending. He left little time for questions from the patient and caregiver. There was no contact with him after the surgeries - postoperative exams were attended by other physicians or interns, which was actually a relief as they were much kinder and more personable, and they made sure all of our questions were answered. If you are a patient with a great deal of experience with medical procedures, you may not mind, or may even be used to this kind of treatment; however, in this case the patient was an 80-year old female with absolutely no previous surgical experience and limited exposure to the medical community. This was explained to the staff, but apparently time and compassion are in short supply here. With regard to the administrative staff: The accounting department can use a great deal of improvement. When I received a bill for the initial office visit, I phoned in a credit card payment. A couple of weeks later, I received another bill. I was told the first payment "didn't go through" but was given no further information and had to pay again. I have just received a bill for the surgical services. The checks I wrote on the surgery dates (two months ago) were cashed within two days, but were not credited to the account. UPDATE 07/15/12: I phoned the office regarding the uncredited payments and was told that the payments didn't appear because the statement showed only "current activity," but they would send me a more detailed statement that "will show everything." I received the detailed statement a few days later, and the payments still aren't on it. Unacceptable. This will require yet another phone call, or more likely mail correspondence with copies of the cancelled checks, etc. read more

Please read this review BEFORE scheduling. I wish I had read the reviews for the practice called Virginia Eye Consultants or googled the practice/company called "CVP Physicians" before I wasted my time at this practice. I had 2 recent visits with very long waits. After the long wait for first appointment, I waited several months so I could have the very first appointment of the day. I arrived early and was the 8 am cataract evaluation. After a very long wait and no communication from front desk, I enquired about the delay, and they said the testing machines were not "starting up". They said that had been a problem the day before. After over 50 minutes of waiting, I was brought in for testing. Two of the machines failed repeatedly. The tech said, "I do not know why". Also, she said, "This has never happened before". I had to undergo repeated testing and intense lights in both eyes because computer would not save the data. These were the very important computers that measure my eyes for surgery, so I was quite concerned about the failures. After the doctor's assistant did his intake; he said the nurse educator would answer my questions before seeing the physician. He came back 5 minutes later to say, "sorry there is no nurse educator today, but the doctor will answer all of your questions". The doctor did apologize and seemed very competent but rushed. The doctor did answer some questions but said the surgical scheduler would see me next and answer the rest of my questions. Five minutes later the assistant came in and said the surgical scheduler is also not here. I was then told, "But we will make an appointment for surgical scheduler for you, and you can get all your questions answered". I was very surprised about the lack of communication amongst the staff. I got to front desk and they said, "NO, we will NOT schedule you the scheduler, but we will email the scheduler and she will contact you within 72 hours". It has been 3 WEEKS. I have made several calls to the practice. No reason is ever given why no contact or why there is such a long delay. Each time they would say they would send another email to her. The last time I called they were very abrupt over phone and said, "they had no idea when she would contact me, and I should wait for her call". Again, it has been over 3 weeks. The physicians may have great reputations but experience with this practice has not only been frustrating but has caused me serious concerns about practice overall. I am moving on and going to get my eye surgery done elsewhere. read more

I couldn't have had a better experience! Billie, DJ (or VJ), Kristy, Erin, Alexia, Leasa, Dr Scoper, Paul, and everyone else I met were beyond brilliant! From the moment I walked in I was impressed with how beautiful the building is and how "alive" the place felt without feeling busy. Not once did I feel like just another patient or a number. Billie was so kind to me and everyone who came up to the desk to sign in. She is a sweet angel. She and DJ/VJ made me feel welcome and comfortable in the midst of my panic for forgetting my ID. Kristy did my pre-op check and was so sweet. With every conversation I kept getting more and more excited. Then it was surgery time... Everyone in the operating room made sure I was as comfortable as possible. Dr Scoper walked me through every bit and was so encouraging. I haven't been in an OR since I was a little girl so I was initially a little nervous, but that quickly dissipated after the first minute or so. They constantly asked how I was feeling and the surgery was a breeze. Dr Scoper warned me about the pressure I would feel during the surgery, but like I said before, he walked me through every second of it so I was never worried. My post-op appointment was no different. They greeted me by name and were so quick to celebrate my vision with me. It really seems like they never get tired of the "magic" they do every day, multiple times a day. Incredible disposition all around the place. Even while I was waiting for the doc, the waiting room was comfortable and it didn't take long for me to be seen. Paul's joy was contagious! I wish I could remember everyone's name and thank them personally even if it was just a smile as we passed en route to a room. I'm 212% satisfied; it was the best experience! :) My vision is so great! It still hasn't hit me that I'm not wearing contacts. The whole experience was a dream and I am looking forward to my follow up appointments; I feel like I'm going to visit my friends as opposed to a doctor's appointment! She explained everything to me and put me at ease before, during, and after a procedure for my dry eye and surgery to remove the scar tissue. we set up a payment plan and they never sent me an invoice. I went online to pay online and the invoice was not posted so their system would not let me pay. I called several times to correct the issue and on one occasion they were able to post the invoice. They wanted me to make payments without having an invoice and I would not. I finally got an invoice and started my payments. I had a family issue and left the area for a month missing one payment and they sent me to collection costing me 33 percent more than the cost. have had two appointments with this company. By far they have the WORST service from a medical establishment. First appointment I had in 2013 was over 2 hours long, put into several different waiting rooms during the process. The ladies in the scheduling area were quick to schedule surgery for me although I told them that I would not be able to pay for any of it out of pocket and would need my current insurance to cover it. Due to the economy I lost my job, the process to send it into that insurance company was an excruciatingly long process and had to cancel my surgery date. Second appointment ((obviously a gluten for punishment)) was close to 5 hours long, again put into various different waiting rooms during different stages of testing. No one at any given time was hospitable, or in any way accommodating that the patient had taken time off of work to do this. Just putzed along taking forever to get the next phase done. Again the lady in the surgery scheduling was particularly aggressive to get the surgery scheduled and get that fee schedule in front of me. This is the same schedule that is nondescript and yet tells you that you are indeed going to have to pay for the whole procedure out of pocket. I again told them there was NO WAY that I would be able to pay for the whole bill out of pocket and would be using my flex spending account. The lady Bonnie started telling me about the HSA will not cover cosmetic surgery, which was not my whole bill, and HSA and FSA are two different accounts billed differently. My end goal was to pay for the surgery or see how much out of pocket it was going to be after the insurance kicked in. No matter how I asked the question the billing department was ill informed, did not know how much the surgery was going to be, what was being covered by insurance if anything, and getting to the end result of how to pay for it was like pulling teeth with no sedation. Horribly unorganized..customer service is awful...office assistants need customer service training...Doctors need to be aware of the lack of bedside manner their staff doesn't provide. Don't expect to be called back...dont expect your injuries regarding your need for answers to be met with optimism...but more with annoyance that you are questioning the abilities of the staff member.
