Hidden Gem for Sweet Tooths & Pup Parents!…read more We visited House of Marmalade as part of the Hampton Roads Passport Series, and I am so glad we did -- I don't think I would've discovered this little gem otherwise! The shop is small and cozy with no indoor seating, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm and incredible sweets. The bakery case was absolutely stunning -- full of beautifully made cookies, macarons, and more. We tried three macarons (espresso, almond, and salted caramel), and every single one was perfection -- fresh, flavorful, and just the right size and sweetness. We also grabbed a shortbread cookie, which was buttery and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. And let's not forget our pup! Lexi got a pumpkin cupcake with peanut butter icing, topped with a tiny bone-shaped treat -- not only adorable, but she devoured it. Definitely pup-approved! The staff was fantastic -- super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. You can tell they care about their craft and their customers. Whether you're doing the Passport Tour or just looking for a place to grab something sweet, House of Marmalade is absolutely worth the stop. We'll definitely be back!

So, I decided on bakeries…read more This one had been on my saved places for about two years or so now, and I decided to finally give it a go. Walking in, it was warm and smelled of bread. Very cozy. Everything looked lovely, it was hard to decide on what to get. She had also just made some fresh pastries. I decided on some ube pendesal, and as I'm a sucker for tiramisu I also asked for that. She offered the fresh pendesal as well, which I couldn't say no to, so I got that as well. She was overall very nice. I saw the empanadas in the corner, and I know I'm already gonna have to come back to try more. She told me how to keep the pendesal fresh, and I thanked her and went to my car to try the breads. The fresh pandesal was amazing. Fluffy, light, warm, soft, a little sweet, just so good. The ube one was a little heavier, and had a halaya and cream cheese filling, which I just loved. It would've been better warm, but I was hungry and wanted to try things. I waited til I got home to try to tiramisu, and oh my god that is some of the best tiramisu I've had in the area. I tried one at the farmers market by an Italian lady, and I think this one is better. It has good ratios of everything. It's not drowning in coffee, the cream is nice and sweet, and it isn't too mushy. This will now be my go-to spot for tiramisu for sure. I can't wait to come back and try more!

We got the birria tacos (I love that they didn't smother them with cheese so you could actually taste the meat), tortillas tasted homemade (I think they are) and we got the carnitas tacos and 2 tortas (bread homemade). All very fresh and very good. Only downfall: food could use a little salt, but sooo good overall. We will be back!! Oh and hot sauce was fire!!!!

I was immediately intrigued and decided to make a detour to check it out. The "open" neon sign was on, but the lighting inside the shop is not very bright, so it gave the impression that it was closed. It has a very modest decor. Nothing fancy, but practical. They have the typical armoire-like cabinet to hold and showcase their baked goods and a cold fridge. Two words: tres leches! This cake is sold by the slice, but according to some other reviews, you can order by the cake too. The tres leches is 2 layers and each layer is THICK. The cake is saturated nicely with the three milks. The container looks jam packed. If I remember correctly, the price was super reasonable too! Tres leches is one of my favorite cakes and this one did not disappoint. I had to eat it in the course of a couple of days. I have tried all sorts of things thus far, from vanilla cookies, sweet empanadas, to puff pastry in the form of a long stick and they were all great. I also recently discovered the Boing! Guava pulp beverage and it was delicious! This bakery is the true definition of a mom and pop panaderia. Never stop exploring and enjoy, Friends!

She even helped me choose my cupcakes and answered any questions we had. I loved seeing all the examples of cakes they do, displayed throughout. I opted for a 4 pack. Whenever I am trying new cupcakes I have a method to my madness. I have to get a fruit one, a chocolate cake based, a vanilla cake based and a surprise. I ended up choosing a lemon cupcake, a vanilla cupcake, a chocolate cupcake and an Ube cupcake. The all tasted nice. The flavors were not over powering at all. I did not taste lemon in icing too much. Out of the 4 flavors I purchase, the Une was the best. Even my coworkers voted on the Ube cupcake being the best. The chocolate cupcake I chose... can't remember the flavor, but it was ok. It didn't wow me. I would definitely visit again.

They always LOOK so delicious, fun and exciting! But...I have never in my life spit out a cupcake, or any kind of cake. I LOVE cake. First time trying them was a couple years ago, and they were unicorn-y looking, and sparkly, and gorgeous. But just not good. Thought I'd try them again 2 days ago and these 3 flavors: Ube, Strawberry (in case I didn't like the Ube), and Chocolate Cheesecake. The Ube was actually fine, and the best of the 3. But I still tossed half of it because it was so dry. SO dry, like sawdust. And sadly, I literally spit out the first bite of both the Strawberry and the Choc Cheesecake. Even drier than the Ube, but worse, they tasted...spoiled, if that's possible. Sadly, I only remembered to take a photo of the last one. I just don't understand! Most other reviews are so great! Maybe you have to order them fresh and not in a retail outlet. Or maybe the farm market gets them a week old or something... or the frosting is only good for one day. ?? Sad face.

My personal favorite is the pizza bread. The bread itself is excellent--soft, fresh, and flavorful. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add a little more filling. Glory's Bakery has the amount of filling that I prefer, but I think Angie's has the better bread overall. The selection is extensive, and it's nice to have a local bakery where you can find so many Filipino favorites in one place. Everything we've purchased has been fresh, and the staff has always been friendly and helpful. Both bakeries have their strengths, and we enjoy visiting each of them for different reasons. The quality of the bread keeps us coming back, and it's one of those places that's hard to leave without buying more than you planned.

It's served in a small, plastic cup with either a straw or spoon (or both!). Place is clean. I also tried the Hopia baboy (could use a bit more filling), mini ensaymada (nice and soft), baked polvoron (love!) and cheese roll (love!). The girls behind the register were also very friendly and helpful (thank you!). Wanted to try the pandesitas (I hope I'm remembering correctly) but you have to pre-order and it has to be 6 dozen (cry). Maybe next time.
