Two years ago my daughter and I went to Vision World for new glasses because it's among the few places that accept my insurance (besides Cohens which is the worst place to go). The staff was polite, and they tried their best to be helpful - not in a way that really suit myself or mu daughter. I need glasses for both distance and reading, so the doctor recommended bifocals - in my early 40s, I did not want bifocals, plus I don't need to wear them for everything - for moderate range, I don't need the glasses. However the doctor and the lady at the desk kinda pushed the issue and the doctor shown me an example where you don't see any embarrassing tell tale lines in the bifocals, so I decided to give them a try. Next part, choosing frames, I purchased frames from a separate retailer prior to the visit knowing what I had in mind, but the doctor said they were too small for bifocals and had the lady at the counter show me some and show my daughter some for her distance only glasses. Thing is, she was only showing me the stuff in the range of my insurance- which would have been fine and appreciated- if I wasn't willing to spend extra out of pocket money to get exactly what I wanted and she nor the doctor seemed to understand I didn't care about extra costs, I didn't like the insurance frames and would have happily spent extra money on a nice pair of frames. Well, I ended up with the insurance frames which weren't the most horrible but not exactly my style and same for my daughter...Fast forward about 10 days when we go back to pick up our glasses. Not happy. The bifocals had that embarrassing line, and they hurt to try to look through but they said to test them out for a couple of weeks that I would get used to them. Fine. At first my daughter thought her glasses were fine too, until she actually tried to see something 8 feet away that was completely blurry - her prescription is either too strong or not strong enough. I tried the bifocals for two weeks and HATED them. I ended up going back to have my prescription separated- a pair of glasses for distance and a separate pair for reading - which the doctor really didn't want to do but because I wasn't happy with the bifocals he done it. Only thing is, my prescription wasn't accurate either- the distance glasses aren't strong enough. The employees here aren't bad, they do seem to try to help you stay within the parameters of your insurance but the most important part - getting the prescription wrong is a big problem. Lens Crafters doesn't take my insurance but they are the only vision center that ever got my prescription right and I got the exact frames I wanted. read more

I have been seeing Dr Gertler for decades. Never ever did I have a problem my prescription. Some people have to go back and forth to adjust the lens's the purchased from other places. I never have. He is a little "dry" but who cares I am not there to find a husband. I am there to see the best I can. He selects frames to choose from that fit my lens size and face. Look around how there are a lot of people with glasses that don't fit there face. read more

This place is a joke! I would rather spend my money at Lenscrafters! Upon entering the store I noticed it had an odd odor like mildew. I came in to get my son's prescription for glasses to be filled. My insurance recommended I go here. After making me wait nearly an hour, I get turned down and they tell me that they don't accept my insurance. The doctor paced back and fourth the entire time and did not seem interested in talking to me. I wouldn't even spend money out of my pocket for this place. No thanks! read more

In a world of walmarts and amazon, one of the last true mom and pop stores left. Very easy to work with and Dr Gertler has decades of experience. Staff caring and wonderful. Would go no where else. A+ read more

STAY AWAY. Dr. Gertler Needs to retire! Made me come back three times when it should have been once for a contact lens fitting. Does not clean equipment between exams. The office has not been updated since the first Brady bunch episode. I had to call my vision insurance carrier to submit a complaint as they were making me come back a FOURTH time. I wish i had read these reviews before going to vision world. I used VSP and bought a pair of glasses there. Doc seemed very cold and equipment seemed just as old as the doc. But i did it anyways. I had the glasses 3 weeks and the spring on the arm broke and the arm came right off. Let me start by saying i have worn glasses 20 years and have never had this happen before with any pair. I took it back to get it fixed. Doc fixed it. I was ok. Then 5 days later the other arm spring breaks while taking them off. I take it back and he says i mistreated them and its my fault. He was extremely rude and accused me of abusing the glasses. I told him that i treat my glasses very good and that it had only been 3 weeks. He said that if it happened again since it was my fault i would have to buy a new pair. I asked him what his policy was for exchanges or refunds and he said there was none. He refused to speak to me and said to leave and not return. I thanked him and left. He didn't entertain the idea that i could have gotten bad glasses or that the quality was sub par. He didnt want to hear it. Needless to say i will NEVER return there or recommed that doctor for anything. I will be placing a complaint with my insurance company and hope that they drop him from being a VSP approved doc. I now know why only 2 reviews of this place and both are bad revies with 1 star. Im going to try and submit with 0 stars but if thats not possible then ill give 1. This doc has no respect for his customers at all. He is mean and i see why people wrote that he scares kids. He needs to learn that customer service is THE most important aspect of a business and also for return business. As empty as that place has been the few times ive been there i wouldnt be surprised if he goes out of business soon. He sure isnt helping his business by treating his customers like garbage. Agree with the other review and wish I would have read it prior to going to Vision World in Centereach. At first glance this place looks like it has a great selection of frames, problem is they are mostly outdated. My children had a hard time finding frames they liked. We ended up leaving with their prescriptions and going else where to buy frames. The doctor isn't exactly personable which made my kids very uncomfortable. The staff seem unhappy and their attitude reflects that. They could use a quick customer service training. We will not be back ever! read more

I have been using this Vision World for 6 years now and have never had a problem. Both I and my son need special lenses and only the first visits were we asked to return back to check fitting, I more then once as he didn't like the way the new contacts were working and he opted to change brands for a better fit. The prices are very reasonable and service is great. My daughter tried Walmart and was unhappy with her lenses. She said she will be going back next year to Vision World. I have had lots of problems over the years with other providers. I even had one hold my contact prescripion back unless I bought a years worth of lenses at his VERY high price! I will be sticking with Vision World. read more

Ive been going here for more than15 years. The doctor is very good at what he does. He is very efficient, I don't think ive had an exam last more than 10 minutes there. He also takes care to adjust the frames of your new glasses so they can fit your face the best. read more

Go literally anywhere else. It couldn't be worse than this place. I have a lot to get off my chest here. The lady at the desk, Marie, berated me for not knowing all the details about my contact prescription and for not bringing my glasses with me (I was never told I should do this - my old place never asked me to bring in my glasses) - actually rolled her eyes and said, "You're a bad patient." She also claimed that they didn't take my insurance, even though I checked with my insurance before going here. Surprise - turns out she was wrong! The doctor (I never learned his name) was rude and unprofessional. When I sat down for the exam, he stared at me for a few seconds and then said, "I'm waiting for you to uncross your legs so I can start." Ok, maybe that doesn't sound too bad but it came off very rudely. He also had ALL the equipment adjusted to the wrong height, so I had to lean and hunch to get my face at the right angle. Then he yelled at me for not having my eyes positioned properly. There is a tiny decrepit sink with a minuscule mirror for changing contacts - I had to hunch down and I'm 5'2" so I can only imagine how hard it would be for someone taller. When I asked if they had any eye-level mirrors, the doctor rolled his eyes and said that I could pull up a chair. I had to move a large trash can out of the way to do that. He also gave me two week contacts because they were "out" of monthlies - seriously? I'm not paying double for contacts because they can't keep up on their stock. I literally left the office and called my old eye doctor (who is in another state) to make an appointment there for next month. I will pay money to never have to go back to this place. I don't trust the prescription they wrote for me and I would never order contacts or glasses through them. I only wish I had left when the lady started to make a big deal about running my insurance at the beginning of the appointment. read more
