Came for lunch on a Sunday afternoon after nearby 1st option had a decent wait and not knowing anything about this place other than it was somewhat close and had good reviews. It was a pleasant surprise. It seems somewhat hidden on the backside of a building with an option for outdoor dining under a pergola in front, but it's way too hot in Austin in July to do that. Going inside it was somewhat small and dark, but with white tablecloth on the tables. We were seated promptly and the service was courteous and kept our drinks and chips & salsa filled. The salsa isn't chunky, but it does have a good kick of spice to it. The only knock was that it seemed to take a bit to receive our food as we went through a couple baskets of chips and salsa and were into a third before our meals arrived. Wife did Emma's Choice ($11), which included a choice of puffy taco [kind of like a chalupa] with choice of enchilada along with brown rice and beans. She said she liked it. Daughter ordered a Taco Salad ($12) that came in a crispy tortilla bowl with spicy tofu and queso. She was a fan. Son ordered Pombazo ($10), which was an impressive looking sandwich that was dipped in guajillo sauce and had beans, sausage, potato, and cotija, and came with a side salad. Surprisingly, he said it just tasted OK. I chose Calabacitas ($11), which had a mix of squash, poblano, corn, onion, epazote, queso fresco, brown rice, and charro beans. For the 2 for $5 tacos you can choose any two you want, meaning you can mic and match. Tacos like beef picadillo, pollo asado or fish. The tortilla chips are made fresh daily and are delivered early each morning. The red and green salsas are made fresh daily in-house. We were supposed to half our meals with each other....and, let's just say I may have "accidentally" took a little more than my allotted portion. The chips were fantastic.... crunchy, tasty, warm, and salsa was fresh and delicious. Lovely. But most of all the service at Vivo is absolutely top notch. Unmatched - I've never seen anything like it! Nearly every server that would walk past our table would ask us if there was anything we needed, filled our salsa or chips, or take away empty plates. I do believe their "hip" description on their very "Austin correct" menu was a bit exaggerated! We can't think of anything we didn't like. Our local family took us to their favorite Mexican spot in Austin where we started with the special cocktails such as mezcal with hibiscus, Mexican martini with agave and olive juice, the Otono bourbon with blood orange. The locally-made chips are bubbly with air pockets and light; we liked them a lot. The chicken, quesadillas and other mains were much more flavorful than the usual Mexican chain restaurant and all of us ate all of the food. I visited this place specifically to buy a gift card for my cousin who really likes to eat here. The food here was really good. I ordered 1/2 order of chicken fajita nachos. I decided to substitute shredded lettuce instead of the sprouts which was no problem. I was very pleased they offered creamy salsa verde upon request. It REALLY enhanced the flavor of their regular salsa, which by itself was good. I just like a bit more bite from my salsa and the salsa verde did the job being far more "spicy-hot" aka...picante! The portions were generous enough that I ended up taking home what I couldn't finish. They even provided me a small container for my remaining salsa. They could improve on their service. I arrived at 7:00pm on a Sunday and had to wait about 5 minutes before anyone greeted me to be seated. This may have been because there was a large SXSW group outside on the patio. Also, my water glass was empty for a while and my mouth was on fire (remember, I like the bite.) However, I did appreciate that they eventually brought large glass bottle of water that lasted the remainder of my meal. They were on top keeping my chips and salsas filled. That's always a plus. The atmosphere is casual with awkward table cloths that barely cover the tables, quirky mismatched chairs and cloth napkins, which are always a nice touch. I was most disappointed to learn they were out of gift cards. I was told I could go online for one but I wanted one to include in a thank you card for my cousin. I've been to Vivo's several times and always had a great experience. Customer service is good and consistent. The servers greet you and take your order promptly. Vivo's has a nice happy hour menu. Starters were chips and spicy but not hot salsa with guacamole that was purée with no chunks, next up was Tortilla soup, this version with slices of guacamole that was a little too salty but still good and adding jack cheese made it better than average. Dinner was Steak Jalisco- perfect size and flavor with a nice lime sauce, Pollo Vivo - tender chicken with sauce that was indescribable right spice with tang and made the dish, Fiesta Salad - huge half chicken half steak, not spicy but with two dressing types, Chipotle Enchilada - tender chicken with good flavor. We weren't super hungry, so this initial review will only be for drinks & appetizers. The salsa is just blah. I don't remember the salsa being this blah. The chips were nothing special. My friend ordered a chalupa & she liked it. In fact, she wished she had ordered two. I ordered the queso and it was ok. Not great, not horrible. The margaritas were pretty good and were presented beautifully with a purple orchid on top. But at $10 apiece for house margaritas, they should have knocked my socks off. Oh - I wasn't wearing socks. My shoes did nothing. I would try it again for dinner, but I would probably wait until they've been open a bit longer. I have great hope that they have the potential to be as great as the former 620 location was. I can't comment on the Eastside location because I was never there. It was nice to see similar funky artwork as their former 620 location. Kudos to the manager who came by to chat with us...very nice touch. They also said they would be adding a patio. I'll be honest I came here for the margaritas pictured on the website. The frozen margaritas are beautifully presented with a lime and flower topping them. After one and a half margaritas I contemplated wearing the flowers on my head. Then I began clapping to some magical music that wasn't playing. I'm sure this is a sign that they pour an adequate amount of tequila in their drinks. Needless to say this was a start to a great evening. After a few strange looks from the others in my dining party I decided to order something off the menu. I went with the puffy tacos I wasn't sure what a puffy taco was but I decided that this was the night to find out. It was something very similar to a regular taco but the tortilla is thicker and puffy similar in some ways to a gordita. I found it tasty, the beans and rice are good and I ate every bite. After the successful dinner I decided to move onto dessert. I requested flan ;a square piece of flan with very little sauce was presented to me. It was a large serving and I found the taste to be good. Now I've rated this place 3 stars it's not the best Tex-Mex food I've had but it's not bad,the service is good the food is filling, and the margaritas are beautiful and tasty. I would rate this place a solid 3 1/2 stars. The problem is Yelp won't Allow me to give 3 1/2 stars. I would return again for the happy hour and the frozen margaritas. read more

If you're looking for a date spot with the prettiest of margaritas and tastiest of salsas, then this is your place. Tucked away in a strip mall in this north Austin area is the gem of Vivo. I'm so glad my friend and I got to try the delicious Mexican food and margs in this beautiful atmosphere! The complimentary chips and salsa were tasty with some spice. Definitely order a margarita (definitely order a size regular too) and get a beautiful flower with it. Portions are also very large, so you will get your bang for your buck with the food here! I was very pleased with my taco salad with shredded chicken. Hearty and somewhat healthy, and full of good authentic Mexican flavors. The taco shell was probably the best part- super buttery and delicious. For a decent price, my friend and I enjoyed a girl's night with pretty- not to mention fresh and tasty- margaritas, yummy food, and a nice atmosphere. The restaurant was quite crowded also, but this didn't stop the service from being very accommodating and friendly.
