This place is awesome because it's 24/7. Who doesn't love getting dessert late at night after a late dinner? I got to try a variety of the donuts and I must say that I'm not a huge fan of their cereal donuts and Oreo donuts. I was initially going to get a type of donut like that but after trying my friends and not liking it I ordered something else and I'm glad I did. Would recommend the 2 donuts below. I think that maybe donuts aren't really the thing for me. The doughnuts at voodoo draw a crowd, but I think they are far too sweet. I tried pieces of three different ones. The Mango Tart- this was my favorite because it was unique. A new filling flavor with a hint of sour sugar on the top. I would like it more with even more sour and less filling, but it was good. Portland Cream- Was similar to many doughnuts I've had in the past and not really anything special to me. It was good, but not wowing. Hibiscus something- I was really hopeful for this one because it was a cool flavor, however, once we got back to our hotel room about 1 block away, the frosting melted off this one making it runny and have a weird texture. I would try it again, but the melted frosting turned me off. Overall, a very expensive place to get some doughnuts. If your a fanatic, this is a place for you, otherwise you're probably okay with cheaper ones that you won't notice much of a difference. read more

A rather well-known donut shop in the Northwest. It's grand opening in Denver was Friday the 13th in December 2013. I have been coming here since a month or so after it opened. It opened a second location in Denver in 2019. First, let's start with it being an easy location to find. However, parking on Colfax is always a pain. There is parking on the side streets. Second, they accept both cash amd card. In the beginning, they only accepted cash. I'm glad they accept card for payment now too (safer and easier). Third, they offer deals if you accept the donuts they put together for you. If you are like me and have particular tastes, then you pay full price for each donut. Even if you do get a dozen donuts, still full price. When you walk in, there is a path to the counter. No seating! They do have display cases along with a large board to show the varieties. There are restrooms for customers too. I've seen the line go outside and wind around the block!! Now onto the donuts!! The "Voodoo donut" is their signature donut. It's my niece's favorite too. It looks like a voodoo doll and has a jelly filling (red I believe, likely raspberry). I believe it comes with a chocolate coating, but there may be other options. It never hurts to ask! They have the infamous maple bacon. It is a maple frosting with bacon slices on top. My son's, sister and nephew love this donut. Not my cup of tea! They also have what I refer to as "cereal donuts". Different cereal types sprinkled on the donuts. My younger son likes these too. I prefer traditional donuts such as the 'Boston creme' donut, which they named Portland creme. Its got the Bavarian creme inside. I'm not sure if it comes in different varieties (like plain). I always get the chocolate covered Bavarian one, sometimes I get the Maple covered Bavarian one. I also love the Raspberry glazed donut! I have recently learned they have "Canollo's"!!! Definitely a copy-cat of the Cannoli, but it sparked my interest!! There is a powdered sugar with chocolate Bavarian creme filling and there is a plain with an apple filling. My aunt really enjoyed them. They have typical donuts too, like powdered sugar, glazed, chocolate covered, etc... They are soft and delicious! During our current pandemic, they have been doing phone orders and pick-up or curb-side delivery to you. They are open inside but adhere to no more than a few inside at a time. it's one of those thing to do while in this part of the town but... but... donuts are good, lots of variety that's freshly made. last few times i have been there, there are lots of donut makers in the back "making it". As silly as it sounds, ever since seeing Voodoo Doughnut featured on some random Food Network show, I have always wanted to try their doughnuts! It sounded so unique and a cool take on flavors, but quite frankly: like a total hipster place. While visiting a friend in Denver, she suggested we get doughnuts from here for breakfast. I'm not one to say no to doughnuts, especially ones I know are kind of famous and known throughout the country, so I happily agreed. There are a few things to keep in mind! First: This specific location is parking is on the street. The lot behind or near their shop is not for customers and you could be towed if you park there. Second: It's cash only. And because they're kind of a trendy doughnut joint, bring more than you think you'll need. We ordered 7 doughnuts and it cost me $18. Third: While we went at 7 in the morning on a Saturday when no one was there, there was a setup inside as if a line could pretty long. They're open 24/7 and I imagine they get a big crowd after the bars close and then again in the later part of the morning when normal people are awake on the weekends. So you could be waiting in line for the doughnuts. Fourth: You'll help speed the process along if you know what you want when you get the counter. We didn't encounter anyone giving us grief for us taking a little while to decide, but we had also looked online prior to arriving so we could make the trip a quick one. Overall the doughnuts were pretty good. My friend, her husband and I all agreed that the old fashioned styled and flavors they had were the best. Their more trendy "super-flavorful" ones were kind of dense and too much. It's like "too much of a good thing". I ordered a maple old fashioned which was delicious and I could have eaten about 4 of those. The other one I ordered was their Voodoo - a yeast doughnut frosted and styled to look like a Voodoo doll with raspberry jelly in the middle to resemble blood. Cute? Yes. Delicious? Meh. Like I said, it was dense and tasted like any other kind of doughnut I'd had. I think you're really paying for the name/brand and the trend of Voodoo. While some of their flavors were really amazing and really good, these weren't the best doughnuts I've ever had. I visited this place several times before deciding to pull the trigger on a review. Having moved here not long ago I have actually heard of this place for years and FINALLY got to try it. I was so excited because I absolutely love donuts! The menu at voodoo is incredibly creative. So much so that some of the flavors and combinations seem a little crazy. Example the bubblegum flavored concoction I did not try (because a bubble gum donut just sounds wrong to me) but I heard from my group that it was pretty good. There was also an item with the word "guava" in its naming (I am cuban so I love me some guava) and when I asked the cashier about it he said the item did not contain guava flavoring. To me it just seems like there are too many wild ideas running lose at this place. The items that I did try had great flavoring and were handcrafted beauties but they always seemed to leave me wanting more. The flavors were good but the product was almost stale to the taste, perhaps I need to get there extremely early in the morning for a fresher donut? Really don't know what the big deal is. To me, it's over-priced overly-sweetened-and-decorated subpar-fried-dough. I guess the fun must be in the anticipation, which, after several months of opening, and operating 24 hours a day, we still had to wait in line for an hour on an early Saturday afternoon. Of course the ATM machine was down, good thing we knew to bring cash. The major wait, now I figured, is mainly due to decision difficulty when faced with this many choices. It took us 15 minutes for our order, if that's the average, then you do the math. Would be neater if they hand out paper menus and/or have little flags on the sample donuts indicating what they are; but I see it as the store's tactic (to have neither). Just like the psychology with the broken ATM machine, people can't help but get sucked in. The buttermilk bar must be really good because they were all out of it. We paid almost $35 for a custom dozen (the Voodoo or Classic dozen are both pre-selected which include at least half that are cake donuts, I couldn't wrap that idea around my head) plus one of each of the specialty: Tex-Ass (just a huge glazed yeast donut) and Cocks&Balls (didn't really look like what you would think if you didn't know the name of it). At least I could say I've been to Voodoo Doughnut. Yes, VD has lots of donuts to offer and are all unusually decorated, but they are neither exceptional in taste nor pieces of art. So I'll just stick to my neighborhood donut shops or other more humble chains like Lamar's whose goodies happen to taste fresher. I gotta give a shout-out to the staff at VD though, they all tirelessly served eager customers and were patient and friendly. Thank you! Update: after going though half of our dozen donuts, the verdict is in: get the yeast raised topped with Oreo bits. My boyfriend picked it out (he only got to choose one, lol) and it turned out to be the best, it's not fair, he has that kind of ability, lol. It's good because the Oreo pieces didn't distract from the donut (as I thought it would) because it's been drizzled with some kind of peanut butter sauce, making the cookies soft (but not soggy). The sweetness level is balanced by the sauce and the fact that the cookie bits don't include the sweet cream. This one alone is 4-stars. read more

Theres an atm in the store - which helps in case you forget that they only take cash? ... really? I happy to say that i've been to 3 of the 4 stores that Voodoo has. Some may argue that this place is all hype - but I seem to enjoy every visit, as much as the first. My favorite still has to be the Maple Bacon Bar. The bacon on top is crisp, smokey and salty - not chewy, which I was afraid of initially. The Maple icing was sweet, rich, and nutty. The two Angels that helped me on Christmas Eve were Amber G and Raina. These two ladies went above and beyond to help me with my order and they also surprised and delighted my niece and nephew who accompanied me on my last minute donut stop. Finding GOOD donuts is hard-- but finding GOOD vegan donuts makes the mission almost impossible. However, voodoo never misses the mark! Amber G recommended some great Christmas themed vegan donuts for the kids to try, and also was very knowledgeable about the selection in general. We came right before closing and she surprised us with even more donuts in our box!! How cool was that??? As we were about to leave, Raina asked the kids if they wanted to see something cool and she proceeded to show them reindeer donuts and a giant Santa Clause donut. The kids loved it--she made their night when she said they could have the Christmas donuts!!! But the story doesn't stop there, I parked on Colfax, a busy major street and not only did Raina walk us to the car, she made sure we were safely in the car before she went back to the store. The quality is pretty good, but for the price, I would have to say that I expected more. They are not horrible by any means, but definitely a bit hyped up. I felt a little pressured to have all my doughnut orders line up once I got to the register with so many people waiting, but the doughnut list was rotating on a screen and it was hard to distinguish which was what. Food Tried a half dozen including the cool and cute voodoo doll donut stabbed with the pretzel spear, Homer's donut, grape ape, and a few others I can't remember the names of. Each donut is priced slightly differently, and I couldn't find a price list online. It came to about $13 for the half dozen. Wow, these are good donuts! The voodoo doll was my favorite with thick chocolate icing and raspberry filling. Decadent!! The cake was soft and fresh, and all the icings were so good. I went to Voodoo to try them and see what all the hype was about. The doughnuts are tasty, and the idea to make them out of a cake like batter is quite intelligent. My complaint is NOT about food, it was delicious. The place was not terribly busy, I arrived at 1:22 on a Friday afternoon and although there was approximately 15 people inside, most of them were waiting for their orders. The young woman who took my order was very cheerful, and seemed to know her position well. I ordered 2 plain 1 Fritter 2 Raspberry Romeo 4 Buttermilk bar I received No Plain at all (wasn't charged for them) 1 Fritter 2 Raspberry Romeo and 3 Buttermilk bar (was charged for 4). Let me explain my photo, I was in a hurry and wished to get donuts for my wife and children. I also wanted to sample them on my way home 6 miles away. I munched on the fritter and one of the Buttermilk bars on the way home. For a place that charges 5ish dollars for a big doughnut, and 4ish dollars for a medium sized doughnut you BETTER GET THE ORDER RIGHT. The doughnuts are good, fantastic even. But if you ever order here, MAKE SURE THE ORDER IS CORRECT before you walk out of the store. Let's be clear, they are EXTREMELY expensive, now we know how they're able to open up several places. But for the money the mistakes that I noticed with my order and other reviews online you might want to take your money somewhere else. Tang; - the Viscous Hibiscus; hibiscus-frosted yeast; - and the Ain't That a Peach; glazed fried dough w. peach chunks and cream cheese frosting. The more traditionally flavored donuts, especially the cake versions, are more run-of-the-mill and not worth the bother. I wish some of the cake donut flavors were also offered in yeast (i.e. Chico stick!) instead; I found the cake donuts to taste dried out. Voodoo is cash only, so be prepared. There isn't much of an overhead menu to help guide you through your selection, so there is definitely a panicked decision time once you reach the counter. We visited on a weekday afternoon, so had no line and our pick of items. I love Voodoo's aesthetic and heads turn when you're carrying one of rheir signature pink boxes.
