I found that Palo Alto was sunny and warmer than Berkeley CA. Berkeley started to feel less comfortable and Palo Alto shopping center was a nicer oasis. The two Caltrain stations at Palo Alto and Menlo Park are very interesting to visit. The Menlo Park station features an old Victorian building that is painted fresh but not in use. Nearby is Philz and El Camino Real. Walking distance to Caltrain. It's 2025 now. The next stops are Redwood and San Carlos. Worth visiting and trying Caltrain after all this time. The modern design is interesting. The weather is so nice that it's outdoor and nice in the evening by Friday night and the weekend. The train is still newer than Bart trains. More attendants and bathrooms and seating as well as chargers and outlets. It's different...same region. For the 2 college campuses that you could visit if you find that positive.

Unlike other stations, Menlo Park CalTrain is quite safe and not suffering from a homeless encampment problem. You can choose to purchase you ticket at the station itself (before the train arrives!) or opt to purchase it via their mobile app (which I suggest, as its more convenient and allows you to get there a little later). It's great a small suburban neighborhood has a CalTrain that gives it such easy access to other parts of the Bay Area.

What many do not appreciate is how vast the campus of Stanford University is. Bikes are an…read moreessential part of student life as is the Marguerite Shuttle The concept of free transportation predates the founding of the University. Back then (1880's) Leland Stanford operated a free horse buggy that moved people from the train station to what was his Summer estate (now the vast university). By 1909 there were street cars that performed the task. In 1963 with a subsidy from the city of Palo Alto, the service transitioned to buses. Finally in 1973, Stanford began funding the service completely. The name "Marguerite" is taken from the first horse that pulled the wagon back in 1880. Today the service discoverer the vast University main complex. It also makes runs to the two Caltrain stations in Palo Alto, as well as a spur that heads over to Mountain View, a line to the East Bay, and to the SLAC complex. The Marguerite is free, and you can catch it at any of the stops dotted through the campus or along its routes. The buses can be quite crowded during events and commute times. The service is making a transition to all electric as well as hybrid buses, but they still rely on diesel ones as well. The buses are usually clean and well maintained and at least during the day the buses are pretty frequent. As with most transportation systems they do have different hours for nights, holidays, and weekends so plan accordingly. They do have an app that will have schedules and live updates to make it even more convenient to use.

I'm a big fan of yelping transit whenever possible…read more This shuttle was twenty minutes late (unheard of in my experience in private shuttles) but ended up working out since the 522 is never on time and I was connecting from it. The transit.511 directions were incredibly confusing (and inaccurate) and the bus sign is fairly hidden from view by another sign but the driver was polite and helpful and I got where I needed to go on time. Be aware that the "Live" VTA they tout isn't actually updated yet for this shuttle. So beyond waiting at the stop, you will have no idea when the next shuttle might show. All in all it helped me out today, but if I had to use this daily I'd go crazy.

There were 40 people on the platform just staring in disbelief. No announcement, no message, no conductor. (Yes, it was the correct train -- the message board said so and the timing was correct.) Thankfully, I live near this station. I can walk under Alma Street via the pedestrian underpass (at Jerry Bowden Park) and take a quick left and arrive at the station. The building is usually unattended (although I have seen security guards a few times). TICKETS: You purchase your boarding passes/tickets at the machine. I usually purchase an all-day pass and keep it in my wallet. A train conductor will periodically ask to see it. WHICH SIDE? If you're traveling north bound (from Palo Alto to San Francisco or anywhere in-between), you'll need to cross under the tracks via the stairs/sidewalk just south of the building. If you're traveling south bound, you can simply wait on the building's side of the tracks. That's about it! Oh...there isn't very much covered seating (a few covered benches). Thus, if you're traveling in the rain, you might want to bring an umbrella. The bicycle cart tends to be near the front of the train, so you'll want to stand near the northern covered bench if you're bringing a bike.

Look, I understand that it's only used six times a year. There's no need to build a fancy waiting…read moreroom or to add nice benches. But a Clipper Card reader would be nice, especially since Caltrain's payment policies are already so confusing. Why should someone using Clipper be forced to get off at a different stop? Are the readers that difficult to maintain? They're used and abused thousands of times a day on Muni buses; can't 2,374 people use one six times a year in Palo Alto? What's the worst that could happen? So this would be a two-star review, except that the signs for this station are horrible. If you're walking from the stadium back to this station, don't do what the signs tell you to do. If you're heading south, you're fine. But if you're heading north, go under the underpass and turn left up that shady ramp as soon as you see it. Don't pay attention to the sign that seems to imply that the northbound platform is a little bit farther up. If you do that, like we did, you'll end up with a good view of the platform but with a chain-link fence separating you and your destination. Then you'll have to walk down and up again. And if you're drunk, please don't cross the train tracks. Many people tried to do it, and if the police hadn't been around, it could have gotten tragic.

The term "station"…read moreis to be used loosely because the train literally stops in the middle of the track and dumps you off onto the gravel. No I'm not kidding... there are no structures, platforms, improvements, ticket machines, parking, bike racks, nothing... again, literally, the train stops at a point on the tracks closest to the stadium, opens its doors, and you take a 2-2.5 foot drop down ONTO THE GRAVEL, which then requires you to cross the tracks, depending on which direction you're traveling. Yes, I had visions of another train mowing us down as we unwittingly deboard. So watch your step... the gravel was golfball-sized, so potential for ankle twisting is medium-to-high. And just to confirm... no, it's not ADA-compliant. Why the 2nd star? At least it's convenient in terms of getting to the game. Otherwise, it would probably -4 stars. Alternate station would be the Palo Alto station, which is just a little further north.

We were picked up on time, and the driver was very nice and friendly, no issues at all there. What I do have an issue with is being ripped off. Due to my own complete stupidity I realized I forget our passports at home while we were in the cab. I did not remember this till we were almost at the airport, and I told the driver, "oh no! I need to go back home." I explained my error. He was very nice, and said, no problem, turned around and I got the passport and we went back on our way. I figured, maybe instead of $70-80 dollars, I would be paying something like double. Strange thing is, there was NO METER. So it was not exactly obvious, what I would pay. But what I did NOT expect was to be charged $267.00!!!! I asked him why so high? And he said it was triple the fare. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but $267 divided by 3 is $90. So not only does this company not use a legal meter, but he charged me more than their quoted rates on their website! That is pure highway robbery!! $267 for a freaking cab ride to the airport? Zero heart. I did not want to argue, as I had a plane to catch, but, I would never use a company that takes complete advantage of someone like this. This price gouging is horrible, and since they don't even use a meter....how are they legally able to get away with this?

What appeals to me most about Uber is that it prioritizes a passenger's safety. The app generates a one-time verification PIN that I give to the driver, and the app also permits me to opt-in for an audio recording of the entire driver/ passenger conversation. I also use Uber to buy ferry tickets to Fire Island. I click on "Account" "Transit Tickets" "Buy Ticket" and then select which part of the island I want to visit. This July 4, I plan to go to the annual Drag Queen Invasion of Fire Island, so I will be selecting "Pines". The app has a Hotel Reservation feature that is found on the "Services" tab, but I won't be staying in the Pines overnight. It will be a "day trip" thing.
